Abstract:The bifurcation and chaos of an 8" cone loudspeaker from its radiation in axial direction have been investigated by adopting an experimental setup quite similar to that of measuring frequency response in an anechois room. Experiments show that lower order and more fractional subharmonics of the fed-in signal begin to appear with increasing input voltage and eventually a chaotic state is reached.

Abstract:The influence of bifurcations in an aeroengine bypass duct on noise radiation was investigated through high-order-accurate three-dimensional numerical simulations. The physical process was described by a set of acoustic perturbation equations. Four bifurcation arrangements with an airfoil cross section were regularly placed in circumferential direction. Results were compared with those of an axisymmetric duct case without the installation of bifurcations. Both near-field propagation and far-field radiation were studied to show that the bifurcations scatter acoustic modes, and redirect sound propagation levels. Compared to the axisymmetric duct case, there area couple of decibel increases in sound pressure level on some angles due to the installation of bifurcations. The method is also applicable to other configurations with different bifurcations and modes.
Sound Radiation from a Generic Bypass Duct with Bifurcations

Abstract:The influence of bifurcations in an aero-engine bypass duct on noise radiation was investigated through high-order accurate three-dimensional numerical simulations. The physical process was described by a set of acoustic perturbation equations (APE), with a background mean flow. Four bifurcation arrangements, with an airfoil cross-section, were regularly placed in circumferential direction. Results of the simulations were compared with those of a clean duct case. A circumferential mode of m=12 with radial mode of n=1 and multi-n modes at a source frequency of 1547 Hz were set as acoustic inputs. For single radial mode case, acoustic modes interfered with the bifurcations resulting in a doubled circumferential mode pattern in the near field acoustic pressure distribution. Far field noise computations indicated 3.2 dB and 2.0 dB sound pressure level increases for radial mode of n=1 and multi-n modes respectively. A comparison was also made between APE and linearlised Euler equations (LEE). Results showed that the APE simulation produced almost identical far field sound prediction to the LEE, with a small difference (< 0.8dB) at the main radiation peak angle.

Abstract:We suggest to use subharmonic stroboscopic sampling to resolve high-order bifurcations in a numerical study of driven nonlinear oscillators. A bifurcation sequence up to the 1024th period has been located in the forced Brusselator by using this method.

Abstract:Near the bifurcation point, the linear stability of difference-differential equation which describes acoustooptical bistable systems was analyzed. The expressions of resonance frequency and amplification multiple were given. The amplification process of small signal was simulated by numerical calculation. The simulation result is in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The phenomena of bifurcation, chaos and hysteresis of electrodynamic cone loudspeaker have been investigated experimentally in mid-frequency range. The frequency spectrum, as well as the phase diagram in frequency-voltage phane, of bifurcation and chaos is given. The hysteresis phenomenon is observed clearly from frequency response curve.
Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.

PERIODIC-IMPACT MOTIONS AND BIFURCATIONS OF VIBRATORY SYSTEMS WITH SYMMETRICAL RIGID CONSTRAINTS

Abstract:Two harmonically excited systems with symmetrical rigid constraints are considered. Repeated impacts usually occur in such systems due to the rigid constraints. The impact formats that occur in two systems are different, i.e., the components of one system collide with each other, and one of components of the other system collides with rigid obstacles. Dynamics of these systems are studied with special attention to pitchfork and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations associated with several periodic-impact motions. Two important parameters, the clearance and the excitation frequency, are considered, and the influence of these parameters on the symmetrical double-impact periodic motion and bifurcations is analyzed with emphases. With a decrease in the excitation frequency, symmetrical double-impact periodic motion usually undergoes Neimark-Sacker bifurcation for large values of clearances and pitchfork bifurcation for small values of clearances. Neimark-Sacker bifurcations, associated with symmetrical double-impact periodic motion, asymmetrical double-impact periodic motion, single-period four-impact symmetrical motion, double-period four-impact motion and double-period six-impact motion, etc., are analyzed in detail. The studies show that the vibratory systems with symmetrical rigid amplitude constraints may exhibit complex and rich quasi-periodic impact motions associated with several periodic-impact ones.

Mechanism of sound generation by flow over two cavities in two dimensions

Abstract:The mechanism of sound generation by flow over two cavities in two dimensions is studied by examining the evolution of vorticity, pressure level, spectra and directivity of the generated sound. The study shows that the sound pressure level for two cavities is higher than that for a single cavity. When the distance between the two cavities is large, the interaction between vortices caused by cavities is weak enough to be negligible, so that the results from the acoustic analogy approach coincide with those from the superposition principle. When the distance between the two cavities is relatively small, however, the interaction between vortices becomes stronger and the results from acoustic analogy approach are then larger than those from the superposition principle. Regarding the nonlinear interaction of sound waves in the far field, high harmonic waves can occur when the dimensions of the two cavities are equal, while the sum and difference frequency waves besides the high harmonic waves appear when the dimensions of the two cavities are different.

Abstract:We report an extraordinary acoustic transmission through two layer annuluses made of metal cylinders in air both numerically and experimentally. The effect arises from the enhancement and reconstruction of the incident source induced by different Mie-resonance modes of the annuluses. The proposed system takes advantages of the consistency in the waveform between the input and output waves, the high amplitude amplification of output waves, and the easy adjustment of structure. More interestingly, we investigate the applications of the extraordinary acoustic transmission in the acoustic beam splitter and acoustic concentrator. Our finding should have an impact on ultrasonic applications.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted increasing interest in recent years owing to their intriguing physical characteristics such as the infinitely high quality factor (Q factor) and the enhanced wave-matter interaction. In this study, we report the theoretical and experimental observation of a Friedrich-Wintgen BIC with bridging near-field coupling in an asymmetric two-state acoustic system. Through the temporal coupled-mode theory, we comprehensively elucidate the role of bridging near-field coupling in constructing Friedrich-Wintgen BICs. Then, we present a two-state system consisting of two asymmetric cavities with a bridging tube. By tuning the diameter and position of the bridging tube, we can effectively modulate the near-field coupling effect of the presented system and achieve a Friedrich-Wintgen BIC. Furthermore, the presented system is modulated to deviate from the BIC, which provides a quasi-BIC and allows for a high-Q perfect absorption when the radiation and dissipation of the quasi-BIC-supporting system achieve the critical coupling condition. The experimental results validate the theoretical and simulation results, demonstrating both the existence of a BIC and a quasi-BIC-based perfect absorption. Our work opens up an avenue to investigate acoustic Friedrich-Wintgen BICs with bridging near-field coupling in asymmetric systems, which enriches the field of acoustic BICs and offers opportunities for the development of acoustic devices with high Q factor and asymmetric wave control.

Abstract:Tipping in multistable systems occurs usually by varying the input slightly, resulting in the output switching to an often unsatisfactory state. This phenomenon is manifested in thermoacoustic systems. This thermoacoustic instability may lead to the disintegration of rocket engines, gas turbines and aeroengines, so it is necessary to design control measures for its suppression. It was speculated that such unwanted instability states may be dodged by changing quickly enough the bifurcation parameters. Thus, in this work, based on a fundamental mathematical model of thermoacoustic systems driven by colored noise, the corresponding Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation of the amplitude is derived by using a stochastic averaging method. A transient dynamical behavior is identified through a probability density analysis. We find that the rate of change of parameters and the correlation time of the noise are helpful to dodge thermoacoustic instability, while a relatively large noise intensity is a disadvantageous factor. In addition, power-law relationships between the maximum amplitude and the noise parameters are explored, and the probability of successfully dodging a thermoacoustic instability is calculated. These results serve as a guide to the design of engines and to propose an effective control strategy, which is of great significance to aerospace-related fields.

Abstract:Resonance and bifurcation are prominent and significant features observed in various nonlinear systems, often leading to catastrophic failure in practical engineering. This paper investigates, under an analytical and numerical perspective, the dynamical characteristics of a fractional Rayleigh oscillator with distributed time delay. Firstly, through the application of the multiple scales method, we derive approximated analytical solutions and amplitude–frequency equations for the regions near both primary and secondary resonances. The stability conditions of steady-state motions and the existence region of the subharmonic response are also obtained. Furthermore, to validate the accuracy of the approximated solutions, the results are compared with numerical solutions derived from the Caputo scheme, revealing a high concordance between them. Then, a comprehensive study on response curves is conducted for the system under different nonlinear damping, fractional parameters and delay strength. Finally, we identify and discuss the presence of the forked bifurcation within the system.

Longitudinal near-field coupling between acoustic resonators grafted onto a waveguide

Abstract:We investigate longitudinal near-field coupling between acoustic resonators grafted onto a waveguide. Experiments are performed in the audible range with a simple acoustic system composed of a finite aperiodic sequence of air resonators. Transmission typically shows a zero around a resonance frequency of a single resonator, as is well known. When two identical resonators are brought in close proximity, however, we observe that longitudinal near-field coupling strongly influences the acoustic transmission. When the separation between resonators is increased so that they can be considered in the far field of one another, we further observe the appearance of Fano-like transmission profiles. We explain this observation by the formation of locally resonant Fabry-Perot interferometers from every pair of resonators. All experimental results are compared to three-dimensional finite element analysis of the acoustic system.

Abstract:We design a structure to realize Rabi splitting and Rabi oscillation in acoustics. We develop rigorous analytical models to analyze the splitting effect from the aspect of phase matching, and from the aspect of mode coupling using a coupled mode model. In this model, we discover that the splitting effect is caused by the coupling of the Fabry-Perot fundamental mode with the resonant mode of an artificial acoustic 'atom'. We then extract the coupling strength and analyze the impact of structural parameters on it. In addition, we demonstrate Rabi oscillation in the time domain. Such quantum phenomena in the classical regime may have potential applications in the design of novel ultrasonic devices.

Abstract:The unidirectional acoustic boundary has broad application prospects. Besides the strongly nonlinear acoustic medium, which can be applied in the realization of the unidirectional acoustic boundary, the present paper proposes a new approach through the active control method, where the secondary source has the property of single directivity. In order to validate its effectiveness in one-dimensional duct, experiments are implemented in three steps: 1. construct the secondary source with the single directivity by two loudspeakers; 2. design the steady unidirectional acoustic boundary by the secondary source in step 1; 3. implement the adaptive unidirectional acoustic boundary by the secondary source in step 1, and through FXLMS algorithm. Results show that the presented approach is feasible and effective for one-dimensional unidirectional acoustic boundary, and the system only contains two traditional loudspeakers and two traditional microphones; thus it will be more feasible for practical realizations of the unidirectional acoustic boundary, compared with the acoustic diode. Abstract:In this paper, we adopt both numerical and experimental approaches to investigate the turbulent flow in a cavity Acoustic Black Hole (ABH), and the low frequency sound energy dissipation mechanism under turbulence. Through the simulation by thermoviscous acoustic module, we deeply study the turbulent development process of the fluid acoustic medium in the cavity ABH, and how the turbulent evolution determines the acoustic performance of the ABH. This dissipation mechanism caused by turbulence in ABH enables cavity acoustic black hole to isolate more than 90% low frequency sound waves in an ultra-low and ultra-broad band, which can provide a good technical solution for the isolation of low frequency sound waves. Our experimental results not only prove our simulation and numerical results, but also prove an important theoretical result of turbulence theory, that is, in fully turbulence state, the relationship between turbulence energy spectral density E and wave number k (k = 1/L, L is the characteristic size L) is E similar to k(-3).
Period-doubling bifurcation in spatiotemporal mode-locked lasers

Abstract: Period-doubling bifurcation is a universal dynamic of nonlinear systems, which has been extensively investigated in laser systems with a single transverse mode. This study presents an experimental observation and theoretical investigation of the period-doubling bifurcation in spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) multimode fiber lasers. In the period-doubling state, it is observed that the pulse train modulation varies with the transverse-mode, and the output beam profile fluctuates rapidly and periodically. The numerical simulations conducted in this study are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, a simple iterative model is proposed by considering the mode-dependent saturable absorption effect, and the experimental results can be qualitatively interpreted by this model. Based on these results, spatiotemporal saturable absorption is believed to be the key factor for the unique spatiotemporal characteristic of period-doubling bifurcation in multimode lasers. This study contributes to the understanding of the complex spatiotemporal dynamics in STML multimode lasers and to the discovery of novel dynamics in high-dimensional nonlinear systems.

Abstract:The ultrasonic machining system is made up of the contactless power transfer system, which is composed of loosely coupled transformer and ultrasonic transducer load. The numerical model of frequency and impedance for rotary ultrasonic machining is built. The impedance model is simulated by Matlab Simulink platform. The results show that there is a bifurcation phenomenon near resonance frequency of the rotary ultrasonic machining,which may lead to ultrasonic machining system work at different resonance frequency. The vibration of different frequency is monitored in the experiment. It is found that the output vibration amplitude of ultrasonic energy at different resonance frequency is different.
