Abstract:Hopf bifurcation, as the most representative dynamic bifurcation, is closely related to the stability of many engineering structures. In this work, the stochastic Hopf bifurcation (SHB) of a controlled quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system (H.S.) of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) is investigated, where the system is subjected to wide-band noise and controlled by a Fractional-order Proportional-Derivative (FOPD) controller with time delay. By decoupling FOPD control force and simplifying it without time delay, the averaged Itô differential equations of the approximated system are derived with the technique of stochastic averaging. Then, the average bifurcation parameter expression of system is obtained, which can determine the criterion of the SHB deduced by the FOPD control force. Last, an illustration of coupled Rayleigh oscillators is given to demonstrate the validity of the procedure. The influences of time delay, noise intensities and fractional order on the system SHB are discussed.
Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.

Abstract: Period-doubling bifurcation is a universal dynamic of nonlinear systems, which has been extensively investigated in laser systems with a single transverse mode. This study presents an experimental observation and theoretical investigation of the period-doubling bifurcation in spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) multimode fiber lasers. In the period-doubling state, it is observed that the pulse train modulation varies with the transverse-mode, and the output beam profile fluctuates rapidly and periodically. The numerical simulations conducted in this study are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, a simple iterative model is proposed by considering the mode-dependent saturable absorption effect, and the experimental results can be qualitatively interpreted by this model. Based on these results, spatiotemporal saturable absorption is believed to be the key factor for the unique spatiotemporal characteristic of period-doubling bifurcation in multimode lasers. This study contributes to the understanding of the complex spatiotemporal dynamics in STML multimode lasers and to the discovery of novel dynamics in high-dimensional nonlinear systems.

Abstract:One way to characterize an orbit of a dynamical system is through its frequency content. Using a “spectral bifurcation diagram”, it has been shown earlier how the frequency content changes when a system undergoes a period-doubling cascade. In this paper, we extend the scope of this technique to obtain newer insights into various bifurcations like pitchfork bifurcation, border-collision bifurcation, period-adding cascade, and various torus bifurcations. We show that applying this method can enrich our understanding of bifurcations by providing vital information about generating or annihilating frequency components in a bifurcation.

Abstract:Abstract A twice harmonic balance (THB) method is proposed to compute and analyze quasi-periodic (QP) responses of nonlinear dynamical systems, with emphasis on the stability and bifurcation of QP responses. In the first harmonic balancing, the original system is transformed into a truncated system via harmonic balance method with variable-coefficients. The truncated system is further solved via the second harmonic balancing, more specifically the incremental harmonic balance (IHB) method. The equivalence is addressed between the periodic solutions of the truncated system and the QP responses of the original system. According to the relationship, the presented method is in essence to convert the problem of solving the original system for QP responses into a truncated system for periodic solutions. Numerical examples show that the semi-analytical QP solutions obtained by the THB method are in well consistence with the solutions obtained by the Runge–Kutta (RK) method and the IHB method with two time scales, respectively. More importantly, the stability of the attained QP solutions can be analyzed by just applying the Floquet theory to the periodic response of the truncated system. The continuation of the QP responses is generated by the presented method, on which the possible bifurcations resulted from the stability reversal are analyzed in detail. In addition, the evolution of QP responses can also be tracked from periodic solutions, such as that due to the onset of a Neimark–Sacker bifurcation.

Abstract:We unveil a mechanism for generating oscillations with arbitrary multiplets of the period of a given external drive, in long-range interacting quantum many-particle spin systems. These oscillations break discrete time translation symmetry as in time crystals, but they are understood via two intertwined stroboscopic effects similar to the aliasing resulting from video taping a single fast rotating helicopter blade. The first effect is similar to a single blade appearing as multiple blades due to a frame rate that is in resonance with the frequency of the helicopter blades' rotation; the second is akin to the optical appearance of the helicopter blades moving in reverse direction. Analogously to other dynamically stabilized states in interacting quantum many-body systems, this stroboscopic aliasing is robust to detuning and excursions from a chosen set of driving parameters, and it offers a novel route for engineering dynamical $n$-tuplets in long-range quantum simulators, with potential applications to spin squeezing generation and entangled state preparation.

Abstract:In this paper, the complicated heteroclinic and codimension-four bifurcations of a triple SD (smooth and discontinuous) oscillator are investigated by analyzing the bifurcation sets in three-dimensional parameter space. The structure of the transition set including the equilibrium bifurcation set and a special kind of heteroclinic orbit bifurcation set is constructed comprising of a catastrophe point of the fifth order, the catastrophe curves of third order and also the catastrophe surfaces of the first order, respectively, according to the restoring forces and also the potentials, respectively. Also, a theorem of structural stability of heteroclinic orbit in 2-dimensional Hamilton system is introduced to find the heteroclinic bifurcation set. The equilibria and the phase structures are classified and shown in details on the transition set and the enclosed structurally stable areas for smooth and discontinuous cases, respectively. The normal forms for each bifurcation surface are built up showing the complex supercritical subcritical pitchfork bifurcations and also the double saddle-node bifurcations, along with the bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic orbit. Taken one of the bifurcation surfaces as an example, the complicated bifurcation is investigated by employing subharmonic Melnikov functions including Hopf, double Hopf, the closed orbit and also the homoclinic/heteroclinic bifurcations. The results presented herein this paper enriched the complex dynamic behavior for the geometrical nonlinear systems.

Abstract:An experimental setup is installed to simulate the rotor-to-stator rub of the rotor system. A special structure of stator is designed that can simulate the condition of the full rub. The vibration waveforms, spectra, orbits and Poincaré's maps are used to analyze nonlinear responses and bifurcation characteristics of the system when the rub-impact occurs. Experiments with different conditions, including one and two rotor with single- and multi-disks, are performed. Very rich forms of periodic and chaotic vibrations were observed. The experiments show that the system motion generally contains the multiple harmonic components such as 2X, 3X, etc. and the 1/2fractional harmonic components such as 1/2X, 3/2X, etc. Under some special conditions, the 1/3fractional harmonic components such as 1/3X, 2/3X, etc. can be observed as well.

Abstract:An efficient method, called the perturbation‐incremental scheme (PIS), is proposed to study, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the delay‐induced weak or high‐order resonant double Hopf bifurcation and the dynamics arising from the bifurcation of nonlinear systems with delayed feedback. The scheme is described in two steps, namely, the perturbation and the incremental steps, when the time delay and the feedback gain are taken as the bifurcation parameters. As for applications, the method is employed to investigate the delay‐induced weak resonant double Hopf bifurcation and dynamics in the van der Pol–Duffing and the Stuart–Landau systems with delayed feedback. For bifurcation parameters close to a double Hopf point, all solutions arising from the resonant bifurcation are classified qualitatively and expressed approximately in a closed form by the perturbation step of the PIS. Abstract:The period-doubling oscillation emerges with the coexistence between zero and {\pi} modes in Floquet topological insulator. Here, utilized the flexibility of the circuit, we construct the Floquet circuit with frequency-synthetic dimension and find the topological-protected deeply-subharmonic oscillations with the period extensively exceeding the doubling-driven period. In the construction framework, the periodically-driven mechanism is attained by implementing the circuit-oscillator hierarchy with the stepping-variation resonances in frequency domain. The zero and {\pi} modes that arise at the Floquet band in the circuit indicate the anomalous boundary-bulk correspondence. The coexistence of zero and {\pi} modes, results in a subharmonic oscillation with the extremely-low frequency on the edge of the Floquet circuit. Furthermore, we explore the Floquet band with the enhanced periodically-driven strength tailored by the component flexibility of the circuit. Our method provides a flexible scheme to study Floquet topological phases, and open a new path for realizing the deeply subwavelength system.

Abstract:Resonance and bifurcation are prominent and significant features observed in various nonlinear systems, often leading to catastrophic failure in practical engineering. This paper investigates, under an analytical and numerical perspective, the dynamical characteristics of a fractional Rayleigh oscillator with distributed time delay. Firstly, through the application of the multiple scales method, we derive approximated analytical solutions and amplitude–frequency equations for the regions near both primary and secondary resonances. The stability conditions of steady-state motions and the existence region of the subharmonic response are also obtained. Furthermore, to validate the accuracy of the approximated solutions, the results are compared with numerical solutions derived from the Caputo scheme, revealing a high concordance between them. Then, a comprehensive study on response curves is conducted for the system under different nonlinear damping, fractional parameters and delay strength. Finally, we identify and discuss the presence of the forked bifurcation within the system.

Abstract:The van der Pol-Duffing equation,excited under the parameters with two time delays,is studied.The main aim is to study 1/2 subharmonic-primary parametrical resonance bifurcation of this system.Perturbation method is used to obtain the bifurcation equation with time-delays,and numerical method is utilized to analyze the effect of time-delays on the steady state response.The research indicates that 1/2 subharmonic-primary parametrical resonance bifurcation can be well controlled by time-delays feedback.

Abstract:Stochastic bifurcation has received much attention recently and is of great significance in the research on the dynamics of nonlinear systems. In this paper, we study the bifurcation of a self-sustained tristable system containing fractional derivative under the excitation of two colored noises, where the self-sustained tristable system consists of stable limit cycles and a stable state. The multiple scale method and generalized harmonic function are used to convert the original system into an equal system without obvious time delay and fractional derivative. Then the stationary probability density function (SPDF) of the system is obtained by using the stochastic averaging method to discuss stochastic bifurcation. Based on singularity theory, the equation satisfying amplitude is obtained to derive the corresponding bifurcation diagram. From the bifurcation analysis of the system, it is revealed that fractional order, fractional coefficient, and the intensity and correlation time of colored noise can be utilized as bifurcation parameters, causing peculiar stochastic bifurcation phenomena and regulating the output of the system, as well as the relatively big colored noise intensity and relatively small correlation time facilitate the realization of large magnitude limit cycle. Monte Carlo numerical results verify the validity of the theoretical approach. In addition, appropriately changing the delayed feedback parameter helps to govern the bifurcation range and causes richer bifurcation phenomena. The results of this paper contribute to a better understanding of self-sustained tristable systems with fractional derivative and may provide reference value in resolving the problems of chattering in high-speed aircraft and applications to viscoelastic materials.

Abstract:An analytical method is introduced to investigate double Hopf bifurcations induced by two delays qualitatively and quantitatively. As an illustrative example, the clear procedure is demonstrated to study delay-induced weak resonant double Hopf bifurcation in a nonlinear system with multiple delays. When two delays are close to double Hopf bifurcation point, all solutions derived from the bifurcation are classified qualitatively and expressed explicitly. Numerical simulations are a good agreement with our theoretical analysis, and also already work in references. The results show that our work in this paper proposes a simple and valid method for investigating delay-induced double Hopf bifurcations. The important feature of our work is that the explicit expression of periodic solutions is easy to be obtained by solving algebraic equations.

Abstract:This study presents an initial study on the bifurcation analysis of bistable oscillator dynamics for human hair-cell bundle structures. The hair-cell bundles within the human cochlea possess highly nonlinear stiffness while sound transmission. To better understand this bistable oscillator dynamics, this study focused on the bifurcation phenomena using the Floquet theory. To define the bifurcations associated with super- and sub-harmonic resonances, the harmonic balance method (HBM) was first utilized with Hill's method, for determining the dynamics stability conditions. In addition, the Floquet multipliers were mapped to examine their relationship with the bifurcation characteristics. To examine the bifurcation characteristics, only the Floquet multipliers associated with unstable conditions were selected because those associated with stable conditions were decaying terms. Then, the complex values of the Floquet multipliers at specific frequency locations were compared with the bifurcations' characteristics. When numerically calculated bifurcations were compared with the results obtained using the HBM, mapping the Floquet multipliers was sufficient for predicting the bifurcations of a biomimetic system inspired by the hair-cell bundle structure. This study suggests practical techniques for employing the HBM with Hill's method by mapping the Floquet multipliers to investigate complex nonlinearities that occur in bistable-stiffness systems.

Abstract:The widespread phenomena of multistability is a problem involving rich dynamics to be explored. In this paper, we study the multistability of a generalized nonlinear forcing oscillator excited by $f(x)cos \omega t$. We take Doubochinski's Pendulum as an example. The so-called "amplitude quantization", i.e., the multiple discrete periodical solutions, is identified as self-adaptive subharmonic resonance in response to nonlinear feeding. The subharmonic resonance frequency is found related to the symmetry of the driving force: odd subharmonic resonance occurs under even symmetric driving force and vice versa. We solve the multiple periodical solutions and investigate the transition and competition between these multi-stable modes via frequency response curves and Poincare maps. We find the irreversible transition between the multistable modes and propose a multistability control strategy.

Abstract:This research considers discontinuous dynamical systems, which have related vector fields that shift over a discontinuity surface. These systems appear in a variety of applications, including ecology, medicine, neuroscience, and nonsmooth mechanics. The purpose of this paper is to develop a perturbation technique that measures the effect of a nonsmooth perturbation on the period doubling bifurcation of an unperturbed system. The unperturbed system is assumed to be close to a period doubling orbit, such that when the bifurcation parameter varies, the response changes from a period one to a period two limit cycle. The generalized determination of the Poincaré map associated with perturbed systems subjected to nonsmooth transitions is derived. The main techniques used in the proof of the results are normal forms and Melnikov functions, which are defined in two zones. Various examples are presented to show that non-smoothness is responsible for period doubling. To illustrate the interesting period doubling phenomenon that emerges from an existing flat periodic orbit via the non-smooth perturbation, a simple and novel discontinuous system is provided. An additional example is provided to show the emergence of a perturbed period doubling orbit near an unperturbed one.

Observation of period-doubling Bloch oscillations

Abstract:Bloch oscillations refer to the periodic oscillation of a wavepacket in a lattice under a constant force. Typically, the oscillation has a fundamental period that corresponds to the wavepacket traversing the first Brillouin zone once. Here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, the optical Bloch oscillations where the wavepacket must traverse the first Brillouin zone twice to complete a full cycle, resulting in a period of oscillation that is two times longer than that of usual Bloch oscillations. The unusual Bloch oscillations arise due to the band crossing of valley-Hall topological edge states at the Brillouin boundary for zigzag domain walls between two staggered honeycomb lattices with inverted on-site energy detuning, which are protected by the glide-reflection symmetry of the underlying structures. Our work sheds light on the direct detection of band crossings resulting from intrinsic symmetries that extend beyond the fundamental translational symmetry in topological systems.
