Abstract:Results of a detailed numerical study on the structure of chaotic bands in a forced limit cycle oscillator (the Brusselator) are presented. Embedded in the chaotic bands of primary bifurcation sequence there are many secondary sequences with both direct and inverse segments. Within secondary chaotic bands tertiary sequences of similar structure exist. This has been shown by using subharmonic stroboscopic sampling combined with power spectra analysis.
Floquet Eigenspectra of a Nonlinear Two-Mode System under Periodic Driving: the Emergence of Ring Structures

Abstract:We study Floquet eigenspectra of a nonlinear two-mode system under a periodic driving of the off-diagonal coupling. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically, we obtain triangular and loop structures near the crossings of different Floquet branches. At lower driving frequencies, we find "ring" and "double-ring" structures which are distinct from the well-known loop structure. The mechanism of the emergence of these structures is discussed and the parameter windows of their existence are obtained analytically. In addition, we study the evolution of the system under the driving with an adiabatic sweep and find there are some dynamically unstable states in the Floquet eigenspectra which break the quantum adiabaticity.
Noisy Scattering Dynamics in the Randomly Driven Hénon-Heiles Oscillator

Abstract:Noisy scattering dynamics in the randomly driven Hénon-Heiles oscillator is investigated when the energy is above the threshold to permit particles to escape from the scattering region. First, some basic simulation procedures are briefly introduced and the fractal exit basins appear to be robust when the bounded noisy excitation is imposed on the oscillator. Second, several key fractal characteristics of the sample basin boundaries, such as the delay-time function and the uncertainty dimension, are estimated from which this oscillator is found to be structurally unstable against the bounded noisy excitation. Moreover, the stable and unstable manifolds of some sample chaotic invariant sets are estimated and illustrated in a special two-dimensional Poincaré section. Lastly, several previous methods are developed to identify three arbitrarily chosen noisy scattering time series of the randomly driven Hénon-Heiles oscillator, from which the quasiperiodic-dominant and the chaotic-dominant dynamical behaviors are distinguished.

Abstract:The chaotic movement of physical pendulum, which is driven by an anharmonic periodic force, is studied by experiment and simulation. The correlation dimension and the largest Lyapunov exponent is obtained by numerical simulation.It is found that there is an obvious difference of correlation dimensions between the systems driven by anharmonic periodic force and harmonic periodic force.

Abstract:A time-delayed quadratic nonlinear mechanical system can exhibit two coexisting stable bifurcating solutions (SBSs) after two-to-one resonant Hopf bifurcations occur in the corresponding autonomous time-delayed system. One SBS is of small-amplitude and has the Hopf bifurcation frequencies (HBFs), while the other is of large-amplitude and contains the shifted Hopf bifurcation frequencies (the shifted HBFs). When the forcing frequency is tuned to be the sum of two HBFs or the sum of two shifted HBFs, two families of additive resonances can be induced in the forced response. The forced response under the additive resonance related to the HBFs can demonstrate periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic motion. On the contrary, the forced response under the additive resonance associated with the shifted HBFs may exhibit period-three periodic motion and quasi-periodic motion. Bifurcation diagrams, time trajectories, frequency spectra, phase portraits and Poincaré sections are presented to show periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic motion of the time-delayed nonlinear system under the two families of additive resonances.

Abstract:The interaction of system demonstrating multi-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations and several steps of the Landau-Hopf scenario with chaotic Rössler system is considered. The quasi-periodic subsystem is a network of five non-identical van der Pol oscillators. It is shown that as the coupling parameter between the subsystems decreases, successive quasi-periodic Hopf bifurcations and doublings of high-dimensional invariant tori are observed. The chaos arising in this system can have several (in our case up to five) additional zero Lyapunov exponents. In case of weak coupling parameter between chaotic and quasi-periodic subsystems, when the coupling parameter of van der Pol oscillators changes, the points at which the attractor transformation occurs are observed. This is a new type of bifurcations that are responsible for a consistent increase in the number of additional zero Lyapunov exponents. As the coupling parameter between chaotic and quasi-periodic subsystems increases, the observed stages of the Landau-Hopf scenario turns out to be resistant to interaction with the chaotic system.

Abstract:We show numerical evidence of exact U-sequences in the periodically forced trimolecular model (the forced Brusselator). Interspersed among period-doubling bifurcation sequences star-ting with RLn type periods, there are chaotic regions bounded on one side by period-doubling bifurcation sequences and on the other side by intermittent transitions. Along certain directions in the parameter space the most clearly seen periods appear in the same order as that in the logistic map, but along other directions the U-sequences may fold and give rise to deviations from the standard patterns. Our results show the coexistence of different "routes to chaos" in one and the same mathematical model and the necessity to enlarge the parameter space in both real and computer experiments on chaotic transitions.
Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.

Abstract:Detailed numerical study shows that along certain directions in the parameter space the periodicity of the forced Brusselator appears in the same order as that in one-dimensional nuimodal mappings, i.e. in accordance with the U-sequence of Metropolis, stein and Stein. We find a simple method to assign words from a symbolic dynamics of two letters to periods in the model. Our results show the neccesity to enlarge the parameter space in similar research ia order to have a global picture of the bifurcation and chaos "spectrum".

Abstract:We have observed transitions from quasiperiodic regime to chaos in the periodically forced Brusselator. It takes place via kinking and folding of the originally smooth Poincare map which may be more generic as compared to the transition in circle mapping, where the quasiperiodic orbit looses smoothness globally. Now all the well-known to chaos have been shown to coexist in this mathematical model in different part of the parameter space. This is in agreement with experimental observations in some hydrodynamical systems where different routes to turbulence have been found in one and the same system under slightly different conditions.

Abstract:Weak periodic perturbation has long been used to suppress chaos in dynamical systems. In this paper, however, we demonstrate that weak periodic or quasiperiodic perturbation can also be used to induce chaos in nonchaotic parameter ranges of chaotic maps, or to enhance the already existing chaotic state. Two kinds of chaotic maps, the period doubling system and the Hopf bifurcation system, are employed as basic models to analyze and compare in detail the different mechanisms of inducing and enhancing chaos in them. In addition, a special kind of intermittency characterized by its periodicity is found for the first time in periodically perturbed Henon map, and reasonable speculations are presented to explain its complicated dynamics.
Superlattice Patterns in the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation with Multi-Resonant Forcing

Abstract:Motivated by the rich variety of complex patterns observed on the surface of fluid layers that are vibrated at multiple frequencies, we investigate the effect of such resonant forcing on systems undergoing a Hopf bifurcation to spatially homogeneous oscillations. We use an extension of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation that systematically captures weak forcing functions with a spectrum consisting of frequencies close to the 1:1-, the 1:2-, and the 1:3-resonance. By slowly modulating the amplitude of the 1:2-forcing component we render the bifurcation to subharmonic patterns supercritical despite the quadratic interaction introduced by the 1:3-forcing. Our weakly nonlinear analysis shows that quite generally the forcing function can be tuned such that resonant triad interactions with weakly damped modes stabilize subharmonic patterns comprised of four or five Fourier modes, which are similar to quasi-patterns with 4-fold and 5-fold rotational symmetry, respectively. Using direct simulations of the extended complex Ginzburg-Landau equation we confirm our weakly nonlinear analysis. In simulations domains of different complex patterns compete with each other on a slow time scale. As expected from energy arguments, with increasing strength of the triad interaction the more complex patterns eventually win out against the simpler patterns. We characterize these ordering dynamics using the spectral entropy of the patterns. For system parameters reported for experiments on the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction we explicitly show that the forcing parameters can be tuned such that 4-mode patterns are the preferred patterns.

Abstract:We show numerically that in the model of trimolecular reaction under external periodic force (the forced Brusselator) there exists the intermittent route to chaos. The time development of intermittent chaos and the method to distinquish intermittency from transients are studied. The large region of period 3 in the parameter space, discovered previously in the forced Brusselator, as well as smaller regions of periods 4, 5, 6 … etc., correspond to tangent bifurcations in one-dimensional mappings. Intermittency appears just before the start of every tangent bifurcation. Therefore, the period-doubling and the intermittent routes to chase are "twin" phenomena and they should be observable in many other systems described by nonlinear differential equations.
Periodic and chaotic behaviors of a compound pendulum driven by a horizontal periodic external force

Abstract:Based on the oscillation experiments of a compound pendulum driven by a horizontal periodic external force, a nonlinear dynamical model is established and studied numerically. The periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic orbits are found in the motions of the compound pendulum in response to several driving forces. The numerical results are in qualitative agreement with those in the experiments. It is found that the chaotic attractor in the three-dimensional phase space displays a two-dimensional torus structure. On a Poincare section, the chaotic attractor consists of the relative rotating core and its trailing tails. The fractal dimension of the chaotic attractor on the Poincare section is determined by using the box-counting method. The bifurcation diagram shows that the transition of the system from periodic motion to chaos is realized by the period-doubling bifurcation. The first Feigenbaum universal constant is approximately determined in the period-doubling bifurcation process. The competition between the inherent vibration and the external driving vibration of the system is thus thought as the physical mechanism for leading to the complex phenomena such as the period-doubling bifurcation and chaos. The numerical results combining with the experimental ones can provide an intuitive and in-depth understanding of chaotic phenomena, which is of great significance for the optimization design and the stability control in the engineering technology.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate complex dynamical behaviors of a delayed-HCO (half-center oscillator) neural system consisting of two inertial neurons. The system proposes two types of periodic orbits having in-phase and anti-phase spatiotemporal patterns that arise via the Hopf bifurcation of the trivial equilibrium and the homoclinic orbit (Homo) bifurcation of the nontrivial equilibrium. With increasing time delay, the periodic orbit translates into a quasi-periodic orbit and enters chaotic attractor by employing quasi-periodic orbit bifurcation. Further, the chaotic attractor breaks and bifurcates into a pair of symmetric multiple-periodic orbits, which evolves into a pair of symmetric chaotic attractors by period-doubling bifurcation. The delayed-HCO neural system presents multiple coexistence employing two classical bifurcation routes to chaos, i.e., the quasi-periodic orbit and period-doubling bifurcations. What is interesting is that the delayed-HCO neural system proposes seven similar sequences (maybe up to infinity) of the bifurcation routes to chaos with increase in the bifurcation parameter τ . In this paper, we describe the coexistence of 14 attractors induced by the multiple bifurcation routes, which includes periodic orbits, quasi-periodic orbits, chaotic attractors, and multiple-periodic orbits.

Abstract:A novel 4D fractional-order chaotic entanglement system based on sinusoidal functions is established in this paper. We aim to reveal the relationship between the dynamical behavior of the new system and its entanglement coefficients. It is found that the equilibrium point of the system varies regularly with the successive change of the entanglement coefficient. The supercritical pitchfork bifurcation phenomenon of the new system is discussed based on the fractional-order stability theory. Furthermore, sufficient conditions and threshold for supercritical Hopf bifurcation caused by the entanglement coefficient are provided. Finally, the route to chaos of the new system is explored utilizing multiple numerical indicators, such as spectral entropy complexity, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponential spectrum, phase portraits, and 0-1 test curves. The results indicate that in addition to various chaotic attractors, there are phenomena such as period-doubling bifurcations, period windows, and coexisting symmetric attractors (periodic or chaotic).

Abstract:Homoclinic chaos in the alternating periodic-chaotic sequences is observed in a nonlinear circuit with sinusoidal driving force. In particular, a complete Alternating Periodic-Chaotic sequence is recorded with a high-resolution up to P-(8) state. The experimental results, analyzed by constructing the time of flight and the next maximal amplitude return maps, are in good agreement with the scenario described by Shilnikov. The underlying dynamics of homoclinic chaos is determined from the next amplitude return map, to be that of a unimodal map and thus a strong dissipation case.

Abstract:Chaos generation depends on nonlinear elements and nonlinear terms in systems of ordinary differential equations. The design and investigation of simple autonomous hyperchaotic systems are of great significance in theoretical interest. This paper presents a novel four-dimensional dissipative hyperchaotic system with only two nonlinear terms. The complex dynamical behaviors of the system are demonstrated with phase portraits, Lyapunov exponents spectrum, bifurcation diagram, Poincaré map and Kaplan–Yorke dimension. Again, the numerical simulation results indicate that the polarity of chaotic signals is transformed flexibly by the offset boosting. Particularly, a symmetric periodic bursting oscillation and bifurcation mechanism are revealed. The bifurcation conditions of periodic bursting are studied in detail by constructing the fold and Hopf bifurcation set of fast-scale systems. The proposed system exhibits symmetric periodic fold/Hopf bursting oscillations with the change of parameters. Finally, hardware experiments verify the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of the periodic bursting. Its potential value in engineering applications is further demonstrated.
