Abstract:The PET fibers are treated by cold plasma technology and the elemental composition and the type offimctional groups of the surface of PET was analyzed by ESCA. The impregnation and interlaminar shearstrength (ILSS) of PET/epoxy composites with untreated and treated fibers are compared in order to study theeffect of plasma treatment on the surface properties of PET. The results show that after treatment the surfacewettability of PET and the interfacial properties of PET/epoxy composites are improved mainly because of theincrease of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups and free energy of the surface.

Abstract:In this work, low-pressure air plasma has been used to improve polyethylene terephthalate (PET) surface properties for technical applications. Surface free energy values have been estimated using contact angle value for different exposure times and different test liquids. Surface composition and morphology of the films were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface topography changes related with the etching mechanism have been followed by weight loss study. The results show a considerable improvement in surface wettability and the surface free energy values even for short exposure times in the different discharge areas (discharge area, afterglow area and remote area), as observed by a remarkable decrease in contact angle values. Change of chemical composition made the polymer surfaces to be highly hydrophilic, which mainly depends on the increase in oxygen-containing groups. In addition to, the surface activation and AFM analyses show obvious changes in surface topography as a consequence of the plasma-etching mechanism.

Abstract:In the field of laser ablation micro-propulsion, the property of double-layer tape has significant impact on the propulsion performance. In this paper, low temperature plasma was used to treat the surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to improve its adhesion with energetic polymer. The PET surface pre- and post-plasma treatment was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the enhancement mechanism of the interface adhesion was discussed. In addition, the ablation performance of the double-layer tape after the plasma treatment was studied. The results showed that the plasma etching effect increased the root mean square roughness of the PET surface from 1.74 nm to 19.10 nm. In addition, after the plasma treatment, the number of C–OH/COOH bonds and O=C–O bonds increased, which also greatly improved the adhesion between the PET and energetic polymers. In the optimization of the ablation performance, the optimal laser pulse width was about 200 μs. The optimal values of the specific impulse (Isp), impulse coupling coefficient (Cm), and ablation efficiency (η) were 390.65 s, 250.82 μN/W, and 48.01%, respectively. The optimization of the adhesion of the double-layer tape and the ablation performance lay the foundation for the engineering application of laser ablation micro-thrusters.

Abstract:The effects of atmospheric air-plasma treatments on woven polyester (PET) textile structures were studied by surface analysis methods: zeta potential, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), wettability and capillarity methods. The zeta potential of the fabrics was based on the established principles of streaming potential. The zeta potential measurements showed that plasma-treated fabrics indicated an acidic surface character. The water contact angle on plasma-treated PET decreased from 80° to 40°, indicating an increase in the surface energy of PET fibers due to a change in the fiber surface chemical nature, which was confirmed by an increase of the oxygen content in the surface detected by XPS. The capillary weight increased from 12 to 200 mg. Both capillary and zeta measurements showed 700 W as the optimum plasma treatment power.

Abstract:The effects of atmospheric air plasma treatment based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) technology on the surface alteration of a woven polyester (PET) textile fabric were investigated. Chemical and physical surface modifications were characterized by specific wettability measurements (water contact angle-WCA and % capillarity), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta potential assessments, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and chemical quantification analysis using ortho-toluidine blue (TBO) dye before and after the DBD processing. A striking enhancement of capillarity percentage from 1.6 % to 108 % was ensured by the plasma treatment suggesting that special chemical elements such as hydroxyl, carbonyl, and carboxyl groups were embedded on the polyester surface, thereby offering it a new hydrophilic behavior. The morphological analysis revealed that plasma treatment is a suitable mechanism to enhance the roughness of treated samples improving furthermore the water retention of the fabric and making the structure more adapted to further chemicals applications. The zeta potential and chemical quantification analysis were also of great interest since they reveal overall the same trend as do the wettability measurements and confirms that the extent of surface modification is in big dependency to the selected plasma parameters. Dyeability of untreated and plasma treated samples was also investigated in terms of color strength, in addition to wash and rub fastness. Sufficiently, higher dyeing performances were noted for plasma treated polyester when compared to the untreated fabric. Atmospheric air plasma treatment was found to be an effective approach to boost the technical reactivity of PET fabrics opening up new opportunities for surface modification under the growing environmental and energy-saving concerns.

Abstract:We demonstrate low-temperature nitrogen plasma (LTNP) and silk fibroin/chitosan microspheres (SFCM) for surface modification and functional treatment of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics to improve their antibacterial and antistatic properties. First, PET warp-knitting fabrics were treated by LTNP equipment. Then, the LTNP-treated fabrics were treated by SFCM solution. The surface properties of the PET fabrics, such as morphology, chemical composition, secondary structure, moisture regain, antistatic property, and breathability were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, electrostatic charge decay tester, and automatic air permeability tester. The antibacterial properties of the PET fabrics were measured against. The results showed that the PET fabrics surface was roughened and nitrogen-containing groups were generated after LTNP treatment. Compared to SFCM-treated PET fabrics, the antistatic and hygroscopic properties of the LTNP-SFCM-treated PET fabrics have been significantly improved. The results also revealed that the LTNP-SFCM-treated PET fabrics had excellent antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus (95.2 ± 1.2%) and Escherichia coli (92.1 ± 2.7%), and after washing ten times, the LTNP-SFCM-treated PET fabrics still had a strong antibacterial effect (73.1 ± 1.6%). Our approach can find potential applications for the development of functional textiles with improved antistatic and antibacterial performance.

Abstract:Because of its inertness and poor impregnation of resin, it is essential to enhance the interfacial performances of PET/epoxy composites by improving its polarity. After PET fiber is treated by cold plasma technology, ESCA is used to analyze the elemental composition and the type of functional groups of the surface of PET, and SEM is used to observe the interlaminar shear fracture. The impregnation of the PET fiber and the interfacial performances of PET/epoxy composites are studied. The results show that after cold plasma treatment, the increase of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups in the surface improves the surface impregnation of PET fiber and the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) property of PET/epoxy composites.

Abstract:The cold plasma technology is used to treat the surface of the PET/epoxy composite. Based on the analysis of the modified surface of fiber by ESCA, the effects of cold plasma treatment parameters on the properties of the PET/epoxy composite are examined in terms of the interlaminar shear strength and the transverse tensile strength. The results show that the cold plasma treatment can make polarity groups such as oxygen and nitrogen increase on the surface of PET/epoxy, which can improve the PET/epoxy impregnation with the resin, and therefore the interfacial property of the PET/epoxy composite is improved.

Abstract:In this study, the surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was modified to improve the protein and cell adhesion behavior with low temperature ammonia plasma treatment followed by 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) grafting. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the -COO(-), -N-C=O and -P-O-H groups were successfully incorporated onto the sample surface after MPC grafting. Furthermore, formation of new bonds, -N= and N-H on the sample surface grafted with MPC was recorded by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A large number of spherical particles at submicron to nanometer scale were also observed on the surface by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The cell adhesion experiments on PET film surfaces were evaluated and the highly hydrophilic surfaces could not promote cell adhesion and spreading. All results achieved in this study have clearly indicated that the method combining low temperature ammonia plasma treatment and MPC grafting is an effective way of producing a suitably hydrophilic PET surface with the capability of weakening the protein adsorption greatly.

Abstract:Modification of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabric with low temperature oxygen plasma has been studied. Prior to the plasma modification, the fabric was treated with a strongly-interacting solvent, dimethylformamide (DMF). The effect of the prior DMF treatment on the subsequent plasma treatment was examined. The plasma-treated sample was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and viewed under a scanning electron microscope. Also wettability and loss in weight after plasma treatment were measured. The oxidative functionalization, surface roughness, and wettability are significantly larger for the sample which has received DMF treatment prior to the plasma treatment than that treated solely with the plasma. Furthermore, DMF-treated PET is much more subjected to etching after plasma treatment than the DMF-untreated sample and hence the weight loss of the former sample is larger than that of the latter one. DMF followed by plasma treatment leads to significant effect on the surface morphology. DMF-induced plastisization in PET causes a marked influence on the subsequent plasma modification.
The eco-friendly surface modification of textiles for deep digital textile printing by in-line atmospheric non-thermal plasma treatment

Abstract:This study evaluated the potential application of an atmospheric plasma (AP) treatment as a pre-treatment for digital textile printing (DTP) of polyester (PET) fabrics and cotton, in order to determine its viability as an alternative to the usual chemical treatment. The surface properties of the AP-treated fabrics were examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle, and the physical properties, such as electrostatic voltage and water absorbance, were tested. The properties of cotton and PET with the AP treatment were found to be dependent on number of repetitions and electric voltage. Although no remarkable surface differences were observed by SEM in the fabrics before and after treatment, the static contact angle of the PET after AP treatment was decreased from 85 ° to 24 ° at wave. In addition, the charge decay time decreased as the voltage and number of treatments increased. The absorption height of PET changed after exposure to 7 mm with increasing measurement time. The K/S with and without the AP pre-treated and DTP finished cotton was better than that with the usual chemical modification. In PET, the 0.5 kW and 1 time AP-treated specimen showed the highest K/S values.

Abstract:The surface of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film was modified by low-temperature plasma with O2, N2, He, Ar, H2, and CH4 gases, respectively. After being treated by low-temperature plasma, their surface wettability and chemical composition were investigated by means of electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and contact angle measurement. The result shows that the surface wettability of PET can be improved by low-temperature plasma, and the effect of the modification is due mainly to the kind of the gases. Mainly because of the contribution of hydrogen bonding force γ[STACK]cS[ENDSTACK], the surface wettability of PET treated with O2, N2, He, and Ar plasma for a short time (3 min) increase sharply, and the surface wettability is also improved by H2 plasma treatment; but the CH4 plasma treatment does not improve the wettability of PET. ESCA shows that the effect of wettability of PET is tightly related to the presence of polar functional groups that reside in the outermost surface layer of PET. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Low Temperature Plasma Initiated Grafting Modification on PET Fabrics

Abstract:In this paper,to improve the hydrophilicity of PET fabrics,the grafting modification of maleic anhydride initiated by low temperature plasma was studied.The modification effect was investigated through orthogonal experiments,which included such factors as plasma power,treatment time and vacuum.The grafting mechanism of plasma initiated was discussed by means of SEM and Infrared Spectrogram.The results showed that the treatment time was the key factor in the hydrophilic modification.Hydrophilicity of PET fabrics could be improved with the concentration of maleic anhydride increased,plasma power strengthened and treatment time prolonged.On the condition of treated plasma power of 100 W,treatment time of 2 minutes and vacuum degree of 30 Pa in argon plasma,the hydrophilicity of PET fabrics could be improved remarkably.Infrared Spectrogram showed that grafting reaction had occurred and reaction product contained carboxyl group.

Abstract:An environmentally friendly approach, which consists in coupling a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) based atmospheric plasma treatment with a coating of an aqueous phase polyurethane dispersion (PUD) containing blocked polyisocyanates, is proposed to improve the adhesion of a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film onto a poly-(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) textile fabric. In this study, a screening digital design of experiment plan (DOE) was developed to determine the influence of process parameters on the adhesion between film and fabric and to evaluate the best possible adhesion value. The process parameters considered are: the dielectric barrier discharge power, the speed of the fabric undergoing the treatment, the concentration of polyisocyanates (NCO) in the PUD and the air gap. The adhesion was measured by a peeling test and further scanning electron microscope observations were carried out. Results showed that an increase of both the processing power and the NCO content in PUD, as well as the decrease in the DBD speed, had a positive effect on the adhesion. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements demonstrated an increase in the oxygen/carbon atomic percentage ratio between the reference fabric and the treated fabric. Thus, the calibrated oxidation of the PET treated with DBD plasma treatment leads to a greater chemical and physical interaction with the TPU film, which results in better film-fabric adhesion.

Abstract:In this work, a fully bio-based multi-functional intumescent flame retardant coating containing ε-polylysine (ε-PL), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and phytic acid (PA) was successfully constructed on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics via a facile one-pot dip-pad-dry process. The introduction of the coating significantly improved the fire performance of the fabric. The treated PET fabric had a limiting oxygen index value of 28.1 %, and was free of molten drops in the vertical flammable test. The flame retardant mechanism analysis indicated that the three components in flame retardant coating formed intact char layers during combustion which hindered the transfer of oxygen/heat and inhibited the generation of flammable volatiles. The treated PET fabric also exhibited better antibacterial ability against E. coli and S.aureus compared to the control sample. Besides, the breaking strength and the elongation at the break of the treated PET fabric were slightly improved. This work provides a facile and sustainable strategy to fabricate PET fabrics with flame retardancy and anti-dripping properties.

Abstract:Surface properties of polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) samples treated by microwave-induced argon plasma have been studied with contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanned electron microscopy (SEM). It is found that plasma treatment modified the surfaces both in composition and roughness. Modification of composition makes polymer surfaces tend to be highly hydrophilic, which mainly depended on the increase of ratio of oxygen-containing group as same as other papers reported. And this experiment further revealed that CO bond is the key factor to the improvement of the hydrophilicity of polymer surfaces. Our SEM observation on PET shown that the roughness of the surface has also been improved in micron scale and it has influence on the surface hydrophilicity.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers are widely used in various fields owing to their good physical properties and chemical resistance, but PET hydrophobicity heavily compromises its use in many applications. Wet-chemical treatments are often required to induce hydrophilicity, but these can damage the polymer matrix and produce large volumes of liquid wastes. Atmospheric-pressure glow-discharge plasma (APGDP) is an alternative and ecofriendly method to obtain similar or better results with polymeric materials, compared to wet-chemical treatments. The hydrophilic behavior of PET samples is investigated after a roll-to-roll APGDP treatment by varying the plasma gas mixture, gas fluxes, and electrode temperatures. The reactive species formed in the plasma chamber are characterized by optical emission spectroscopy. The induced surface functionalization and roughness are characterized by contact-angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, and UV/Vis absorbance of a probe dye.

Abstract:Amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), which possess a low softening temperature (Ts=75°C), was exploited to fabricate the electrophoresis chip with an integrated gold electrode for amperometric detection, with emphases being focused on the PET surface modification via UV light and air plasma. Both UV irradiation and plasma treatment were found to be able to improve the surface wettability, enhance the supported electroosmotic flow (EOF), and increase thermal bonding strength of PET sheets, with the latter being more efficient and less time-consuming than the former in the surface modification. Upon treated with plasma for 2min, the PET sheets could be thermally bonded at 65°C. T-peer test showed that the bonding strength increased from 10g/cm for native PET sheets to 1250g/cm for the plasma treated sheets when chips were bonded at the softening point, Attenuated-total-internal-reflection spectrum showed that, after being exposed to the UV light, carboxylic groups site-selectively formed in the UV-exposed region on PET surface. These UV-induced carboxylic groups were further utilized as the scaffold for preparation of micro-gold electrode via electroless gold plating. By using this established UV-directed electroless plating and the plasma-assisted thermal bonding techniques, the full PET electrophoresis chip with an integrated micro-gold electrode could be fabricated in common chemistry laboratory without the need of clean rooms. The fabricated PET chips were demonstrated for separation and detection of model analytes of dopamine (DA) and catechol (CA). Satisfactory resolution of the two analytes was achieved within 40s, and detection limits of 0.87μM and 1.28μM for DA and CA were obtained, respectively.
Effects of Components of Plasma on Hydrophilicity Surface Modification of PET Film

Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films were exposed to radio frequency capacitive coupled plasma (CCP) to improve their surface properties. The effects of argon plasma and argon-oxygen mixture plasma to the PET film surface morphology, surface composition, hydrophilicity and adhesive properties were studied. The research results showed that the surface roughness of PET film was increased due to the introduction of oxygen in the plasma, and the chemical activity of oxygen enhanced the chemical action of plasma, a large number of functional groups which containing oxygen were produced, as a result, the contact angle of PET film was reduced, and the adhesion properties to Au was promoted.
