Abstract:A model is proposed for displacive mechanism of bainitic formation by martensite-like shear in the carbon-depleted region of the parent austenite. Thermodynamic analyses show that the driving force of bainitic transformation increases with the reduction of the carbon content of carbon-depleted region and can overcome the shear energy resistance with carbon depleting to a certain level. And, the driving force of bainitic reaction is dependent upon the carbon content of carbon-depleted region, the average carbon content of the alloy and the transformation temperature whereas the shear energy barrier of bainitic formation is mainly determined by the aspect ratio of product phase. The model also deduces a prediction that the freshly-formed bainitic ferrite is with partial supersaturation of carbon, which increases smoothly with decreasing the reaction temperature. Finally, it is concluded that the shear formation of bainitic ferrite can be realized thermodynamically within the whole temperature range of bainitic reaction.

Abstract:In this paper the authors present their two findings: (1) Mechanism underlying the mixed-product zone. The authors' theoretical analysis indicates that the transformation of any phase product follows its own peculiar C-curve and that, when two C-curves intersect, mixed product zone appears. In the experimentally determined TTT diagram of Cu-Zn (26.84wt.%)-Al(4.22wt.%) alloy, the C-curves of the bainite ��1 (plate-like, 9R structure) and the equilibrium phase �� (rod-like, fcc structure) intersect at the bay temperature. Fig.3 of this paper is clearly different from the corresponding TTT diagram given in literature in that the lower C-curves corresponding to ��1 does not show a cutoff at the temperature (bay) of the intersecting point of the two C-curves, i.e. the transition temperature, B varies with transformation time even at a temperature higher than the bay temperature. Therefore, the existence of the mixed product zone is inevitable in the process of bainitic transformation. (2) Definition of stage of pure bainitic transformation. From the explanation just explained in (1), it naturally follows that the needed definition is: pure bainitic transformation for Cu-Zn (26.84wt%)-Al(4.22wt%) alloy occurs only when the point representing temperature and time falls within a certain area.
Thermodynamics of Bainitic Formation in Carbon-depleted Region in Fe-C Alloys

Abstract:Thermodynamic analysis for the formation of bainitic ferrite in carbon -depleted region has been conducted. The results show that the driving force of bainitic formation increases with depleting of carbon in parent austenite and with decreasing the transformation temperature. The critical driving force (absolute value) at the B s temperature is 600-1200 J / mol, which increases as the mean carbon content of Fe-C alloys increases. The freshly-formed bainitic ferrite has partial supersaturation of carbon, which increases smoothly with decreasing the transformation temperature. Therefore, the displacive formation of bainitic ferrite in carbon-depleted region is thermodynamically feasible in the whole temperature range of bainitic reaction

Abstract:An evaluation method for bainite transformation kinetics was established by theoretical derivation, dilatometric curve analysis, and microstructure observation. The isothermal transformation of ultra-fine bainite under different austenitizing temperatures and contents of prior martensite was studied using a DIL805L dilatometer. The kinetic parameters (activation energy Q*, autocatalytic factor λ, temperature rate constant κ, unit volume transformation rate, and the number density of nucleation sites Ni) of ultra-fine bainite transformation under different austenitizing temperatures and contents of prior martensite were calculated based on the displacement growth bainite dynamics model. It was found that the autocatalytic factor λ is linear with the austenite grain size d, and the number density of nucleation sites Ni is closely related to the average volume of the bainite subunit Vb. Moreover, the formation of prior martensite and its increase can increase the number of nucleation sites and the nucleation rate of the ultra-fine bainite; thus, the ultra-fine bainite transformation can be accelerated.

Abstract:The viewpoints about the formation mechanism of bainite are described as following aspects:(1) Ultra-fine structure of bainite in ferrous and nonferrous alloys is discovered by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). (2) STM studies discovered that the surface relief of bainite is substantially composed of groups of small relieves which correspond of ultra fine units, their surface relief is rent-shaped. (3) The popularity and mobility of 3-dimensional superledges in ferrous and nonferrous are proved by TEM and STM. (4) The bainite carbide nucleate in the gamma side of alpha/gamma interface and grow toward austenite. (5) STM studies on surface relief of grain boundary allotriomorph (GBA) and Widmanstatten ferrite (WF). They are tent-shaped. (6) The formation of bainite is through sympathetic nucleation-ledgewise growth mechanism. (7) 3-dimensional morphology of upper bainite transforms continuously to lower bainite.

Abstract:The behaviour of the pre-bainitic transformation in the CuZnAlMn alloy was investigated by using internal friction (Q−1) measurements and TEM. The results show that there always exists an internal friction peak associated with the segregation of solute atoms before the formation of orthorhombic 9R bainite and that the 9R bainite nucleates martensitically in depleted regions of solute atoms in the B2 phase. The transformation processes mentioned above were also confirmed in isothermal internal friction and TEM experiments.

Abstract:Effect of carbon concentration of parent austenite on isothermal transformation to bainite has been studied. It has been shown that when the carbon concentration of parent austenite is low and the transformation temperature is higher than the Zener ordering temperature, the carbon content of bainitic ferrite is low. On the other hand, it is unusually high when parent austenite has higher carbon and the transformation temperature is less than the Zener ordering temperature. The results have been rationalised on the basis of Zener ordering of carbon atoms resulting in the formation of BCT ferrite with higher solubility of carbon. Similarly, the carbon content of untransformed austenite in the former case was found to closely follow the T0curve line whereas it was higher than T0in the latter case. A theoretical framework based on the equilibrium between BCT ferrite and austenite has been proposed to explain the shift of the T0curve to higher carbon concentration. Finally, the revised limits of carbon concentration of bainitic ferrite and austenite have been suggested for the calculation of the relative fractions of these phases when transformation temperature is less than the Zener ordering temperature.

Abstract:Bainitic transformation goes through three stages: incubation period, nucleation, and growth. The long transformation time is not conducive to industrial production, which restricts its development. Therefore, research on accelerating bainitic transformation is based on the situation of energy saving and efficiency saving. The methods to accelerate bainitic transformation include the control of alloy elements, heat treatment control, etc. This paper focuses on the influence of the pre-formed phase on the kinetics of accelerated bainite transformation. Combined with existing research and experiments, it clarifies the influence of pre-formed ferrite, pre-formed martensite, and precipitated second-phase particles on the kinetics of bainitic transformation. Moreover, it clarifies the characteristics of bainitic transformation in terms of microstructure characterization.

Abstract:The main research results about the mechanism of bainite formation are described as follows: (1) Bainite in steel is of ultra-fine structure; (2) Surface relief of bainite is produced only by the deformation of the growing bainitic ferrite; furthermore, surface relief of a single smallest structural unit is tent-shaped rather than invariant-plane-strain-typed; (3) 3-dimensional superledges appear on the broad face of bainite ferrite and the austenite (335) plane of the structural units of bainitic sheaves is reasoned to be a diffusional interface, which indicates the growth of lower bainite by a diffusion process; (4) The bainite carbide nucleates in the gamma side of alpha/gamma interface and grows toward austenite; (5) Sympathetic nucleation-ledgewise growth model of bainite suggested on the base of the experiment data was proved by theoretical calculation.

Abstract:The prebainitic phenomenon in several copper alloys and ferrous alloys was investigated by means of internal friction measurement and composition analysis. The internal friction peaks of zinc or carbon atoms diffusion inβ brasses or in austenite of ferrous alloys, respectively, were related to the zinc or carbon-depleted region formation within the bainitic incubation period observed by composition analysis. The possibility of bainite shear nucleation in solute atoms’ depleted regions, formed by diffusing of solute atoms to a certain level, was pointed out.

Abstract:By using three groups of experiment,it is shown that the lower bainitic carbides can nucleate in theγside ofα/γinterface or between two bainitic ferrite sub-units and grow towards austenite.Morphologically,the carbides can exist inside the a or pass across the interface ofα/γorα/α;The carbides grow competitively with the ferrite during the whole transformation process,and the carbides are precipitated from austenite side of theα/γ,interface,meanwhile the growing rate of ferrite is higher than that of carbides,as a result,the carbides are surrounded by ferrite,resulting in a false inpression that the lower bainitic carbides are precipitated from bainitic ferrite;The nucleation and growth model of lower bainitic carbides is proprosed on the basics of thermodynamics and the ledge-wise growth theory;It is suggested that the lower bainitic carbides precipitated from carbon- enriched retained austenite rather than supersaturated ferrite,which directly concerns the mechanism of bainitic transformation.

Abstract:Based on the classic diffusion controlled nucleation and growth theory, the sympathetic nucleationledgewise growth mechanism of bainite was studied theoretically for Iow carbon Fe-C alloys. The rationality of the occurrence of sympathetic nucleation on the terraces of ledges competing with lateral ledge growth and other sites nucleation was demonstrated by the present work quantitatively. The calculations indicated that Iow reaction temperatures and high carbon concentrations may favor the sympathetic nucleation, thus accounting for the formation of multilayer structures of bainite.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>Quenching and subsequent isothermal bainite transformation (QBT) and direct isothermal transformation (DIT) procedures are performed to comparatively evaluate the impact of the introduced prior martensite on bainite transformation behaviors and microstructural characterizations in a high‐carbon nanostructured bainitic steel. A thermodynamic model under a QBT process based on displacive theory is also developed to expound the bainite formation kinetics. The results indicate that the modified kinetics model, by considering austenite/martensite interface nucleation, austenite grain boundary nucleation, and autocatalytic nucleation, evolved here can be used to accurately describe the bainite formation behavior in the presence of prior martensite. A certain fraction of prior austenite/martensite interface can serve as the preferential nucleation site for the bainite transformation and assist in an acceleration of transformation rate. The bainite nucleation event initially takes place at prior martensite plate boundary in the QBT process instead of austenite grain boundary in the DIT process and subsequently continues through autocatalytic nucleation at austenite/bainite interface generated at either austenite/martensite interface or austenite/austenite interface. The introduced prior martensite slightly refines bainite sheaves and lessens the blocky retained austenite size, presenting a feasible approach to shorten the required time for producing a nanosized bainitic microstructure.</p></section>

Abstract:The three-dimensional morphology of low-temperature bainite in high-carbon steel was reconstructed by serial sectioning and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction techniques. Combined with laser scanning confocal microscope and electron backscatter diffraction analysis, the microstructural evolution and crystallographic orientation of low-temperature bainite were studied. The results show that the three-dimensional morphology of the low-temperature bainite sheaves is a plate-like structure. During the isothermal transformation, some new bainite plates stop growing after impinging on preformed bainite plates. However, some new bainite plates resume growth on the opposite surface of the impingement zone after briefly stopping. This is attributed to the accumulation of strain energy in the collision zone caused by impingement between bainite plates, which provides the driving force for new nucleation, thus stimulating new nucleation on the opposite surface of the collision zone. The bainite formed on the opposite surface maintains the same crystallographic orientation as the "twinned bainite". Finally, the bainite plates form interlocked microstructures in the prior austenite grains via impingement, nucleation, and intersection.

Abstract:A multiphase microstructure comprising of different volume fractions of prior martensite and ultra-fine bainite (bainitic ferrite and retained austenite) was obtained by quenching to certain temperatures, followed by isothermal bainitic transformation. The effect of the prior martensite transformation on the bainitic transformation behavior, microstructures, and mechanical properties were discussed. The results showed that the prior martensite accelerated the subsequent low-temperature bainite transformation, and the incubation period and completion time of the bainite reaction were significantly shortened. This phenomenon was attributed to the enhanced nucleation ratio caused by the introduced strain in austenite, due to the formation of prior martensite and a carbon partitioning between the prior martensite and retained austenite. Moreover, the prior martensite could influence the crystal growth direction of bainite ferrite, refine bainitic ferrite plates, and reduce the dimension of blocky retained austenite, all of which were responsible for improving the mechanical properties of the ultra-fine bainitic steel. When the content of the prior martensite reached 15%, the investigated steels had the best performance, which were 1800 MPa and 21% for the tensile strength and elongation, respectively. Unfortunately, the increased content of the prior martensite could lead to a worsening of the impact toughness.

Abstract:Growing evidence in the literature highlights the presence of bainitic ferrite with partial carbon supersaturation at low temperatures. Diffusional growth models correctly predict the lengthening rate of plate-like ferrite but often underestimate carbon content due to the assumption of carbon local equilibrium at the interface, valid at elevated temperatures but less so as temperature decreases. Carbon transfer across the interface becomes increasingly important during bainite formation at lower temperatures, potentially resulting in carbon supersaturation within ferrite. This study proposes a more realistic approach for the carbon interfacial conditions. By relaxing the local equilibrium assumption, a potential carbon activity difference arises between austenite and growing bainite, inducing carbon supersaturation. Comparative analysis with literature data demonstrates that the revised Zener-Hillert model can predict carbon supersaturation trends across diverse alloys and temperatures. This extended model enhances our understanding of bainite growth at lower temperatures, with implications for alloy design and heat treatment processes.

Abstract:The particular time and temperature regime of the bainitic transformation in a Cu-Zn alloy is revealed by the time-temperature transformation (TTT) diagram determined experimentally. The areas, in which a pure or mixed phase product appears, are well exhibited in the TTT diagram. The pure bainitic transformation occurs only when the point representing temperature and time falls within a particular area marked in the TTT diagram.

Abstract:<p>The effects of ausforming temperature on bainite transformation kinetic and plastic deformation mechanism were evaluated by thermal simulation method and warm rolling process. Results showed that entire process of bainite transformation austempered at 300 °C was notably accelerated by ausforming due to the increased nucleation sites, and by diminishing ausforming temperature as well. However, ausforming would increase undercooled austenite stability, leading to the decrease of maximum attainable volume fraction of bainitic ferrite. Compared with traditional isothermal transformation, ausforming process could effectively refine microstructure, as well as improve mechanical properties. And with decreasing ausforming temperature, strength, hardness and ductility were all increased, which attributed to the thinner thickness of bainite lath and smaller dimension and proportion of blocky retained austenite, by contrast, the change trend of impact toughness was virtually opposite resulted from variant selection. When ausforming at 300 °C, the ultra-fine bainitic steel exhibited the best comprehensive mechanical performance, which was almost 1850 MPa and with up to 23% for ultimate tensile strength and total elongation, respectively.</p>
