Abstract:The development of corporation depends on employees' initiatives.In addition,knowledge staff has become the main work force in modern knowledge economy.As such,studying employee voice behaviors becomes increasingly important in the academia.Employee voice behavior is a constructive,change-oriented communicating behavior which intends to improve the working situation.Many studies have investigated employee voice behaviors,including constructs,antecedents and consequences.The previous research was conducted mostly in the western society.This study tries to use employees of Chinese state-owned enterprises as samples.Specifically,this study tries to testify the relationship between employee job satisfaction and voice behavior,and test the moderating effect of affective commitment on the relationship. The relationship between employee job satisfaction and voice behavior is complex.Contradictory results,including positive and negative,were found in past studies.To solve these inconclusive results,this study hypothesizes that the relationship would be a type.As for organizational commitment,we hypothesize that it will positively moderate the relation between job satisfaction and voice behavior. The sample in this study was made up of 282 white-collar staff of 17 state-owned enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta of China.Questionnaire-based field study is adopted to test our proposed hypotheses.The job satisfaction scale is moderated from Hackman and Oldham's(1975) study.The affective commitment scale uses five items and is modified from Allen and Meyer's(1996) study.The voice behavior scale is modified from Van Dyne and LePine's(1998) study.All questions used the 7-point Likert scale.Two graduate students who major in English first translate the original survey instrument in English into Chinese.We controlled gender,tenure,and educational level as they might impact employee voice behavior. Descriptive statistical analysis,explorative factor analysis,hierarchical regression analysis,and simple slope analysis are conducted to test the proposed hypotheses.The results do not support the U-curve relationship between job satisfaction and voice behavior.Affective commitment moderates the relationship positively.Finally,we discuss our finding and future studies.

Abstract:As the development of knowledge management and the spread of ethosos of self-innovation,the study of extra-role behaviors,including voice behavior,attracts much attention increasingly.Compared with the popularity in western academia,the indigeneous empirical study awaits much reinforcement.After review of past studies,based on trait activation theory,social identity theory and homo economicus perspective,this study try to explore the construct,formation mechanism of employee voice behavior and its effect on organizational creativity.The research methods include semi-structure interview,matched-sample-questionnaire field study and lab simulation.The whole study include three substudies,that is,(1) the exploration of construct of emplolyee voice in Chinese context;(2) the research of multi-level dynamic formation mechanisms of employee voice,which includes the trait-activation-based exlporation of personal characteristics on voice,the personal-identity-based exlporation of leadership behavior on voice,and the homo-economicus-perspective-based exlporation of the interaction of personal characteristics and situational factors on voice;and(3) the research of the influence of employee voice on organizational creativity.

Abstract:This study investigates the social processes that underpin the influences of team members’ voice behavior on the voice behavior of other individual members. The tests of the hypotheses, using survey data from 342 full-time employees working in 74 project teams in the IT industry, support the hypothesized links. Teams with a stronger consensus—in terms of team members’ levels of promotive voice—stimulate a focal member’s promotive voice through the belief that promotive voice is worthy. This finding is in line with social facilitation theory. In an intriguing but unexpected finding, which resonates with social loafing theory, consensus in team members’ levels of prohibitive voice inhibits a focal member from speaking up. This interesting finding challenges the common assumption of “monkey see, monkey do” social contexts in employee teams; instead, the effect appears to depend on the type of voice behavior.

Abstract:We examine the role of employees' and team leaders' social network positions, an important, yet understudied class of variables, in affecting employees' voice behaviors. Using multi-level, multi-source data from 185 employees nested within 43 teams and their team leaders, we find that employees who hold central positions in the formal, workflow network in the team are more likely to speak up with ideas and suggestions. This relationship is weakened when they are central to the team's avoidance network. In addition to employees' own network positions, team leaders' positions in such informal networks also play a role in qualifying the employee workflow centrality voice relationship. Specifically, the positive relationship between employees' workflow centrality and their voice is strengthened when their team leaders occupy central positions in the friendship network, but is weakened when they are central to the avoidance network in the team. Abstract:Purpose Research about the benefit of voice to organizations generally assumes that leaders acknowledge or act upon employees' ideas when they are voiced, but is it always the case? Drawing on social persuasion theory, the purpose of this paper is to explore what factors shape the effectiveness of employee voice by integrating message, receiver and source characteristics of employee voice into one theoretical model. Specifically, this paper investigates the influence of different types of voice on leader receptivity, and further examines whether the effectiveness of employee voice might be contingent on authentic leadership and employee expertise. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 353 matched employee-supervisor pairs in a two-phase field study. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships among the study variables. Findings Results indicate that leaders respond more receptively to promotive voice than prohibitive voice. Furthermore, leader receptivity is contingent on authentic leadership and employee expertise. The relationship between promotive voice and leader receptivity is more pronounced when employee expertise or authentic leadership is high rather than low; the relationship between prohibitive voice and leader receptivity is significant only when authentic leadership or employee expertise is high. Originality/value This research offers a more holistic explanation for understanding the effectiveness of voice behavior. Specifically, these findings emphasize the important role of voice content in determining managerial response, and underscore the value of receiver and source characteristics in shaping the relationship between voice and leader receptivity.

Abstract:Voice behavior is one of the main forms of employees participating in the management.Under the Chinese context, the impacts of employee's promotive voice and prohibitive voice on individual task performance and contextual performance are studied from the perspective of conservation of resources.On this basis, a local element, supervisor-subordinate guanxi, is introduced as the moderator.A questionnaire survey is carried out of 269 Chinese employees, and the structural equation model and hierarchical regression are used to analyze the sample data.It is shown that both the promotive voice and prohibitive voice have positive influence on the task and contextual performance.Guanxi plays a positive moderating role between the prohibitive voice and the two types of performances, but has no effect on the relations between the promotive voice and both performances.
The Relationship between Organizational Type and Employee Voice Behavior:A Power Perspective

Abstract:The present research aimed at investigating the relationship between employee voice behavior and organizational types,which include state- owned enterprises,private enterprises,foreign- funded enterprises and government agencies in Chinese context,and examining the intervening roles of power within this relationship. A paired sampling was conducted between employees and their immediate superiors,while 324 valid questionnaires were used to conduct analysis of variance( ANOVA) and other analyses. The results showed that there was a significant difference of voice behavior among four types of organization,and perceived sense of power and power motivation had respectively acted as mediators between organizational type and voice behavior. Moreover,power distance moderated the relationship between organizational types and the mediators. Finally,the implications of the findings for research and practice were identified.

Abstract:Voice behavior,one of the ways of employees' participation in making organizational decisions,is more and more significant for the development and innovation of organizations,and it attracts much attention from organizational behavior scholars.Hirschman (1970) is the person who firstly put forward the concept of voice behavior in nearly 40 years ago,and then the studies of voice behavior never stop.Gradually,organizations pay more attention than before to employee relationship with organizations.In the big data era,organizations are facing too many challenges and opportunities.In addition,many researchers have suggested that a variety of factors can influence employees' voice behaviors.High commitment work systems (or high commitment organizations) are popular in successful multinational enterprises such as Microsoft,Procter & Gamble and Disney,and much research had proved that high commitment work systems could lead to more benefits for organizations.The present study is an examination that we explored roles of high commitment work system,perceived career opportunity,and job satisfaction in predicting voice behavior.We proposed the following hypothesis:(1) High commitment work system has positive effect on employee speaking-up.(2) High commitment work system has positive effect on speaking-out.(3) High commitment work system has positive effect on perceived car eer opportunity.(4) Perceived career opportunity mediates the relationship between high commitment work system and employee speaking-up.(5) High commitment work system has positive effect on job satisfaction.(6) Job satisfaction mediates the relationship between high commitment work system and employee speaking-out.(7) Performance moderates the relationship between perceived career opportunity and employee speaking-up.(8) Interpersonal relationship moderates the relationship between job satisfaction and employee speaking-out.The data consists of 223 surveys' responses from 36 organizations.We analyzed the data by using Mplus and SPSS,and the results showed that:(1) High commitment work system has positive effect on voice behavior,including employee speaking-up and speaking-out.(2) Perceived career opportunity mediates the relationship between high commitment work system and employee speaking-up;and job satisfaction mediates the relationship between high commitment work system and employee speaking-out.(3) Employee performance moderates the relationship between perceived career opportunity and employee speaking-up;it also moderates the ‘high commitment work system-perceived career opportunity-employee speaking-up’ linkage.(4) Interpersonal relationship moderates the relationship between job satisfaction and speaking-out;it also moderates the ‘high commitment work system-job satisfaction and-employee speaking-out’ linkage.Implications,limitations and future directions of these findings are discussed as well.

Abstract:This study addresses an understudied research area in current voice research—the employee voice gap, defined as the extent to which employees perceived actual voice falls short of their demand for voice. Drawing on social exchange theory, we propose that the employee voice gap can be a significant reason for turnover intention, and such a relationship is mediated by employees’ perceptions of working conditions and industrial relations climate. We also argue that these relationships exist at the firm level and that the aggregated voice gaps are associated with organizational turnover rates. We provide empirical evidence for the relationships using the 2019 China Employer-Employee Matched Survey data of 4602 employees from 301 firms. The findings of our study point to similar voice gap patterns to those found in the North American context, indicating the universal effects of workplace voice gaps. In addition, our analysis reveals that having more voice than needed is not associated with these outcomes. Our study enriches the employee voice literature in general and in the Chinese context specifically through an interdisciplinary lens.
Why and When Does Employee Voice Evoke Leader Receptivity? A Social Persuasion Perspective

Abstract:While it is generally known that employee voice is important to organizations, few studies have investigated how leaders actually respond to the voice they receive. We adopt social persuasion theory to integrate variables associated with the message, source, and receiver of the voice event into one theoretical model to investigate the influence of different types of voice on leader receptivity. We also consider how authentic leadership and employee expertise influence the above- mentioned relationships. We tested our hypotheses in a two- phase filed study with 353 matched employee¨Csupervisor data pairs. Results indicate that promotive voice was more likely to be accepted by leaders than prohibitive voice, and the voice¨C leader receptivity relationships can be enhanced by authentic leadership and employee expertise respectively. These findings point to the importance of incorporating different aspects of characteristics of voice event for understanding the effectiveness of voice behavior.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of employee psychological empowerment in the leader-member exchange (LMX)-employee voice relationship, and whether role clarity moderated the effect. Design/methodology/approach - A paired questionnaire survey was used to collect data by 295 employees and their supervisors from nine firms in the People's Republic of China. Findings - The hypothesized moderated mediation model used in this study was supported. Psychological empowerment mediated the positive relationship between LMX and employee voice, and stronger role clarity tends to strengthen this indirect relationship. Originality/value - Few studies have explored the mediating mechanism in the relationship between LMX and employee voice. Based on role theory, this study broadens the research on the LMX-employee voice relationship by introducing employee psychological empowerment as the mediator. This study further explores role clarity as the boundary condition for this indirect relationship.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to introduce a concept of self-interested voice, or voluntarily expressed ideas, solutions, or concerns related to workplace issues that affect the voicer's personal interests. Three studies were conducted. In the scale development study, we developed and validated a new measure of self-interested voice with a sample of 36 researchers for content validity and a sample of 362 employees for factorial and discriminant validity. In Study 1, we examined the antecedents and motivational pathways of self-interested voice. We proposed that perceived organizational politics (POP) can promote self-serving cognition, especially among those high in Machiavellian personality, and thus lead to self-interested voice. Our hypotheses were supported by results from time-lagged survey data from 262 employees and 117 supervisors in China. In Study 2, we extended the model by including the outcomes of self-interested voice. Using another Chinese sample (282 employees matched with 105 direct supervisors), we replicated the findings of Study 1 and additionally found that self-interested voice was negatively related to supervisors' liking and suggested salary increases of the employees but not task performance and promotability. The implications for employee voice research are discussed. Practitioner points Employees can send their voice concerning ideas, solutions, or concerns related to workplace issues that affect their personal interests. Perceived organizational politics (POP) is an important trigger of employee self-interested voice, especially among those high in Machiavellian personality. It is vital for managers to monitor the politicking climate in the workplace to reduce employees' self-interested voice at work. While employees are likely to engage in self-interested voice to protect their interests when perceiving organizational politics, such behaviour will lead to negative reactions from supervisors, such as lower supervisor liking and more hesitation in suggesting salary increases.
The Curvilinear Relationship Between Employee Voice and Managers’ Performance Evaluations: the Moderating Role of Voice Consensus

Abstract:In the rapidly changing business environment, employee voice can be a key driver of organizations’ sustainable development. However, how can employees ensure that they receive a positive response from their managers? To what extent do the voice patterns within the team influence managers’ reactions to one employee’s voice behaviors? To address these questions, we draw on the antecedent–benefit–cost framework (ABC framework) and knowledge management literature to investigate the inverted U-shaped relationship between employee voice and managers’ performance evaluations and the role of voice consensus (i.e., the extent to which the frequency of an employee’s voice is dissimilar to that of his/her coworkers) in shaping this relationship. The results of a field study of 173 employees in 37 groups show that employees who engage in moderate levels of voice are rated as better performers than those who rarely voice or voice very frequently, especially when the frequency of employees’ voice deviates from the voice frequency of their coworkers (i.e., low consensus). These findings highlight that it is not only important to explore the frequency of voice when studying managerial responses to employee voice but to also examine other dimensions of the voice behavior (such as voice consensus).
A Study of the Relationships between Employee Voice and Employee Silence: A Nomological Network Perspective

Abstract:As two representative discretionary work behaviors(DWBs),the research on voice behavior and on employee silence go their own way all along,the empirical studies on their relationships are under development.Employee voice and employee silence seem like opposite constructs,but their real relation are not as superficial as they show.To explore this question,based on nomological network,the study testifies the relationships between voice behavior and employee silence,from affect,cognition and leadership perspective.The sample was taken from private firms and foreign capital firms which locate in the Yangtze River Delta.To alleviate the common method variance,the data was taken from the matched sample of subordinate and supervisor.Namely,the dependent variables were rated by supervisors(excluding employee silence because it is an unobservable phenomenon) and the independent variables were measured by subordinates.Later on,350 subordinatesupervisor valid dyads were used to analyze the hypotheses.Using SPSS and AMOS software,the analyses procedures include confirmatory factor analysis(CFA),descriptive statistic analysis,exploratory factor analysis(EFA),regression analysis and structured equation modeling(SEM).The findings include: Voice behavior and employee silence are two independent constructs and they are not significantly related.In the affect characteristics,positive affect can advance employee voice;negative affect can increase both voice behavior and employee silence.In the cognitive characteristics,self-efficacy are positively related to voice behavior,psychological safety are positively related to voice behavior,and negatively related to employee silence.In the leadership characteristic,leader-member exchange(LMX) can boost voice behavior,but its impact on employee silence is not significant.For their consequence,employee voice is more welcome to supervisor than employee silence.
Conceptualizing Employee Silence and Employee Voice as Multidimensional Constructs

Abstract:Employees often have ideas, information, and opinions for constructive ways to improve work and work organizations. Sometimes these employees exercise voice and express their ideas, information, and opinions; and other times they engage in silence and withhold their ideas, information, and opinions. On the surface, expressing and withholding behaviours might appear to be polar opposites because silence implies not speaking while voice implies speaking up on important issues and problems in organizations. Challenging this simplistic notion, this paper presents a conceptual framework suggesting that employee silence and voice are best conceptualized as separate, multidimensional constructs. Based on employee motives, we differentiate three types of silence (Acquiescent Silence, Defensive Silence, and ProSocial Silence) and three parallel types of voice (Acquiescent Voice, Defensive Voice, and ProSocial Voice) where withholding important information is not simply the absence of voice. Building on this conceptual framework, we further propose that silence and voice have differential consequences to employees in work organizations. Based on fundamental differences in the overt behavioural cues provided by silence and voice, we present a series of propositions predicting that silence is more ambiguous than voice, observers are more likely to misattribute employee motives for silence than for voice, and misattributions for motives behind silence will lead to more incongruent consequences (both positive and negative) for employees (than for voice). Received Respect and Constructive Voice: The Roles of Proactive Motivation and Perspective Taking

Abstract:This study advances voice research by offering a social-relational view of the drivers of voice, a theoretical approach to voice that is seldom considered within the current paradigm largely focused on personality traits, job conditions, and organizational characteristics. One overlooked yet important social-relational antecedent of voice is received respect. Our core premise is that when employees believe they are respected by coworkers, they experience psychological changes to their control beliefs (representing “can-do” proactive motivation) and positive mood (representing “energized-to” proactive motivation), which then motivate voice. We further consider another social-relational variable—perspective taking—as a predictor of received respect and therefore as an indirect predictor of voice. Through a multimethod, multisample research program comprising four studies (two experiments involving more than 400 subjects in total, a sample involving more than 700 matched employee-coworker and subordinate-supervisor dyads, and a 9-week within-person field investigation of more than 400 university alumni), we provide evidence to support the proposed model. That is, received respect was associated with employees’ voice through control beliefs and positive mood, and perspective taking was a prominent predictor of received respect.

Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior

Abstract:Over the past decade, hundreds of studies have been published on employee voice and silence. In this review, I summarize that body of work, with an emphasis on the progress that has been made in our understanding of when and why employees choose to speak up or remain silent, as well as the individual and organizational implications of these choices. I identify underexplored issues, limitations in how voice has been conceptualized and studied, and promising avenues for future research. Although there has been notable progress in our knowledge of voice and silence, numerous key questions remain, and there are opportunities for the literature on voice to adopt a broader view of that construct. One of the objectives of this review is to motivate and guide research that will address those questions and explore that broader view.

Abstract:Scholarly interest in employee voice behavior has increased dramatically over the past 15 years. Although this research has produced valuable knowledge, it has focused almost exclusively on voice as a positively intended challenge to the status quo, even though some scholars have argued that it need not challenge the status quo or be well intentioned. Thus, in this paper, we create an expanded view of voice; one that extends beyond voice as a positively intended challenge to the status quo to include voice that supports how things are being done in organizations as well as voice that may not be well intentioned. We construct a framework based on this expanded view that identifies 4 different types of voice behavior (supportive, constructive, defensive, and destructive). We then develop and validate survey measures for each of these. Evidence from 5 studies across 4 samples provides strong support for our new measures in that (a) a 4-factor confirmatory factor analysis model fit the data significantly better than 1-, 2-, or 3-factor models; (b) the voice measures converged with and yet remained distinct from conceptually related comparison constructs; (c) personality predictors exhibited unique patterns of relationships with the different types of voice; (d) variations in actual voice behaviors had a direct causal impact on responses to the survey items; and (e) each type of voice significantly impacted important outcomes for voicing employees (e.g., likelihood of relying on a voicing employee's opinions and evaluations of a voicing employee's overall performance). Implications of our findings are discussed.

Abstract:Extant literature has universally demonstrated that employee voice is a positive workplace behavior that is beneficial for organizations. We challenge this consensus by investigating the potential cost of employee voice for organizational ethics. Drawing upon moral licensing theory, we suggest that employees engaging in voice may lead them to develop psychological entitlement (i.e., a belief that they are owed special treatments from the organization), which in turn increases their workplace deviance. Furthermore, we propose that these effects are especially pronounced among employees with higher levels of power distance orientation. Empirical results from a vignette experiment and a multi-wave survey supported our hypotheses. Taken together, our research not only extends the literature on the consequences of voice by revealing the unforeseen perils of voice for organizations, but also delivers important practical implications for managing employee voice.
