Abstract:Graph search, the process of visiting vertices in a graph in a specific order, has demonstrated magical powers in many important algorithms. But a systematic study was only initiated by Corneil et al. a decade ago, and only by then we started to realize how little we understand it. Even the apparently naïve question “which vertex can be the last visited by a graph search algorithm,” known as the end vertex problem, turns out to be quite elusive. We give a full picture of all maximum cardinality searches on chordal graphs, which implies a polynomial-time algorithm for the end vertex problem of maximum cardinality search. It is complemented by a proof of NP-completeness of the same problem on weakly chordal graphs. We also show linear-time algorithms for deciding end vertices of breadth-first searches on interval graphs, and end vertices of lexicographic depth-first searches on chordal graphs. Hot-Chord: A query algorithm for accelerating the locating of hot resources

Abstract:Chord is a common circular P2P model with high routing efficiency and stable data inquiring. This paper proposes the Hot-Chord algorithm according to the fact that hot resources have occupied the majority of searching in the P2P system. Hot-Chord algorithm constructs an inner chord dynamically by using the nodes which hot resources is locating, to decrease the inquiring space; Nodes join or leave the inner chord adaptively according to the variation of resources searching rate. On the basis of theoretical analysis and experimental simulation, this paper certifies that the Hot-Chord algorithm has not only the better searching efficiency in hot resources inquiring but also the lower the average number of hops in finding resources than the original Chord and some improved algorithms. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Graph searching is one of the simplest and most widely used tools in graph algorithms. Every graph search method is defined using some particular selection rule, and the analysis of the corresponding vertex orderings can aid greatly in devising algorithms, writing proofs of correctness, or recognition of various graph families. We study graphs where the sets of vertex orderings produced by two different search methods coincide. We characterise such graph families for ten pairs from the best-known set of graph searches: Breadth First Search (BFS), Depth First Search (DFS), Lexicographic Breadth First Search (LexBFS) and Lexicographic Depth First Search (LexDFS), and Maximal Neighborhood Search (MNS).

A Polynomial-Time Algorithm for MCS Partial Search Order on Chordal Graphs

Abstract:We study the partial search order problem (PSOP) proposed recently by Scheffler [WG 2022]. Given a graph $G$ together with a partial order over the set of vertices of $G$, this problem determines if there is an $\mathcal{S}$-ordering that is consistent with the given partial order, where $\mathcal{S}$ is a graph search paradigm like BFS, DFS, etc. This problem naturally generalizes the end-vertex problem which has received much attention over the past few years. It also generalizes the so-called ${\mathcal{F}}$-tree recognition problem which has just been studied in the literature recently. Our main contribution is a polynomial-time dynamic programming algorithm for the PSOP of the maximum cardinality search (MCS) restricted to chordal graphs. This resolves one of the most intriguing open questions left in the work of Scheffler [WG 2022]. To obtain our result, we propose the notion of layer structure and study numerous related structural properties which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:A hole in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of length at least four. A graph is chordal if it contains no holes. Following McKee and Scheinerman (1993), we define the chordality of a graph $G$ to be the minimum number of chordal graphs on $V(G)$ such that the intersection of their edge sets is equal to $E(G)$. In this paper we study classes of graphs of bounded chordality.

Abstract:Previous studies of search in channel graphs has assumed that the search is global; that is, that the status of any link can be probed by the search algorithm at any time. We consider for the first time local search, for which only links to which an idle path from the source has already been established may be probed. We show that some well known channel graphs may require exponentially more probes, on the average, when search must be local than when it may be global.

Abstract:A chorded cycle is a cycle with at least one chord. Gould asked in [Graphs Comb. 38 (2022) 189] the question: What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? For a graph with fixed size, extremal spectral conditions are given to ensure that a graph contains a chorded cycle and a $(2k-3)$-chorded $(2k+1)$-cycle for $k\ge 2$, respectively, via spectral radius.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that there is a natural correspondence between a tree's edge-search strategy and its node-search strategy. By doing so, we simplify the previous linear time algorithm for determining the edge-search number of a tree, and improve the running time of a previous algorithm for constructing an edge-search strategy (or plan) for a tree containing n vertices from O(n log n) to O(n) time.
An Efficient Keyword Search on Temporal Graphs

Abstract:Keyword search on temporal graph is to find a tree covering a set of query labels and being valid in the query time interval. It has many applications in cloud computing, community detection, social network, collaborative project, and so on. However, the existing methods are limited in solving the problem of keyword search on temporal graphs. We propose two basic algorithms, the discrete timestamp algorithm, and the approximate algorithm , the idea of which is trying to turn the problem into the traditional keyword search on graph. To address the low efficiency and low quality of the two basic algorithms, we propose a new algorithm based on dynamic programming to solve the keyword search on temporal graph. The idea is to extend a leaf vertex into a solution by edge-growth operation and tree-merger operation. We also propose two powerful pruning techniques to reduce the intermediate results during the extension. To speed up the algorithm further, we show that our algorithms can be easily parallel. Besides, all algorithms we proposed can handle different kinds of ranking functions well, and all of them can be adaptive to top-N keyword querying by simply changing the stop condition. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms are verified through extensive empirical studies.
Tree-layout based graph classes: proper chordal graphs

Abstract:Many standard graph classes are known to be characterized by means of layouts (a permutation of its vertices) excluding some patterns. Important such graph classes are among others: proper interval graphs, interval graphs, chordal graphs, permutation graphs, (co-)comparability graphs. For example, a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a proper interval graph if and only if $G$ has a layout $L$ such that for every triple of vertices such that $x\prec_L y\prec_L z$, if $xz\in E$, then $xy\in E$ and $yz\in E$. Such a triple $x$, $y$, $z$ is called an indifference triple and layouts excluding indifference triples are known as indifference layouts. In this paper, we investigate the concept of tree-layouts. A tree-layout $T_G=(T,r,\rho_G)$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a tree $T$ rooted at some node $r$ and equipped with a one-to-one mapping $\rho_G$ between $V$ and the nodes of $T$ such that for every edge $xy\in E$, either $x$ is an ancestor of $y$ or $y$ is an ancestor of $x$. Clearly, layouts are tree-layouts. Excluding a pattern in a tree-layout is defined similarly as excluding a pattern in a layout, but now using the ancestor relation. Unexplored graph classes can be defined by means of tree-layouts excluding some patterns. As a proof of concept, we show that excluding non-indifference triples in tree-layouts yields a natural notion of proper chordal graphs. We characterize proper chordal graphs and position them in the hierarchy of known subclasses of chordal graphs. We also provide a canonical representation of proper chordal graphs that encodes all the indifference tree-layouts rooted at some vertex. Based on this result, we first design a polynomial time recognition algorithm for proper chordal graphs. We then show that the problem of testing isomorphism between two proper chordal graphs is in P, whereas this problem is known to be GI-complete on chordal graphs.

Abstract:Chordal graphs are the intersection graphs of subtrees of a tree, while interval graphs of subpaths of a path. Undirected path graphs, directed path graphs and rooted directed path graphs are intermediate graph classes, defined, respectively, as the intersection graphs of paths of a tree, of directed paths of an oriented tree, and of directed paths of an out branching. All of these path graphs have vertex leafage 2. Dominating Set, Connected Dominating Set, and Steiner tree problems are W[2] ‐hard parameterized by the size of the solution on chordal graphs, NP ‐complete on undirected path graphs, and polynomial‐time solvable on rooted directed path graphs, and hence also on interval graphs. We further investigate the (parameterized) complexity of all these problems when constrained to chordal graphs, taking the vertex leafage and the aforementioned classes into consideration. We prove that Dominating Set, Connected Dominating Set, and Steiner tree are FPT on chordal graphs when parameterized by the size of the solution plus the vertex leafage, and that Weighted Connected Dominating Set is polynomial‐time solvable on strongly chordal graphs. We also introduce a new subclass of undirected path graphs, which we call in–out rooted directed path graphs, as the intersection graphs of directed paths of an in–out branching. We prove that Dominating Set, Connected Dominating Set, and Steiner tree are solvable in polynomial time on this class, generalizing the polynomiality for rooted directed path graphs proved by Booth and Johnson (SIAM J. Comput. 11 (1982), 191‐199.) and by White et al. (Networks 15 (1985), 109‐124.).

Abstract:A graph $G$ is a {\em chordal-$k$-generalized split graph} if $G$ is chordal and there is a clique $Q$ in $G$ such that every connected component in $G[V \setminus Q]$ has at most $k$ vertices. Thus, chordal-$1$-generalized split graphs are exactly the split graphs. We characterize chordal-$k$-generalized split graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. Moreover, we characterize a very special case of chordal-$2$-generalized split graphs for which the Efficient Domination problem is \NP-complete.

Succinct Data Structure for Chordal Graphs with Bounded Vertex Leafage

Abstract:We improve the worst-case information theoretic lower bound of Munro and Wu (ISAAC 2018) for $n-$vertex unlabeled chordal graphs when vertex leafage is bounded and leafage is unbounded. The class of unlabeled $k-$vertex leafage chordal graphs that consists of all chordal graphs with vertex leafage at most $k$ and unbounded leafage, denoted $\mathcal{G}_k$, is introduced for the first time. For $k>0$ in $o(n/\log n)$, we obtain a lower bound of $((k-1)n \log n -kn \log k - O(\log n))-$bits on the size of any data structure that encodes a graph in $\mathcal{G}_k$. Further, for every $k-$vertex leafage chordal graph $G$ such that for $k>1$ in $o(n^c), c >0$, we present a $((k-1)n \log n + o(kn \log n))-$bit succinct data structure, constructed using the succinct data structure for path graphs with $kn/2$ vertices. Our data structure supports adjacency query in $O(k \log n)$ time and using additional $2n \log n$ bits, an $O(k^2 d_v \log n + \log^2 n)$ time neighbourhood query where $d_v$ is degree of $v \in V$.

Abstract:The Terrain Guarding problem, a variant of the famous Art Gallery problem, has garnered significant attention over the last two decades in Computational Geometry from the viewpoint of complexity and approximability. Both the continuous and discrete versions of the problem were shown to be NP-Hard in King and Krohn (2010) and to admit a PTAS (Krohn et al., 2014; Friedrichs et al., 2016). The biggest unsolved question regarding this problem is if it is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the size of the guard set. In this paper, we present two theorems that establish a relationship between a restricted case of the ONE-SIDED TERRAIN GUARDING problem and the Clique Cover problem in chordal graphs. These theorems were proved in Katz and Roisman (2008) for a special class of terrains called orthogonal terrains and were used to present a FPT algorithm with respect to the parameter that we require for DISCRETE ORTHOGONAL TERRAIN GUARDING in Ashok et al. (2018). We hope that the results obtained in this paper can, in future work, be used to produce such an algorithm for Discrete Terrain Guarding.

Abstract:Chordal graphs are important in structural graph theory. Chordal digraphs are a digraph analogue of chordal graphs and have been a subject of active studies recently. Unlike chordal graphs, chordal digraphs lack many structural properties such as forbidden subdigraph or representation characterizations. In this paper we introduce the notion of semi-strict chordal digraphs which form a class strictly between chordal digraphs and chordal graphs. Semi-strict chordal digraphs have rich structural properties. We characterize semi-strict chordal digraphs in terms of knotting graphs, a notion analogous to the one introduced by Gallai for the study of comparability graphs. We also give forbidden subdigraph characterizations of semi-strict chordal digraphs within the classes of locally semicomplete digraphs and weakly quasi-transitive digraphs.

Abstract:Archiving graph data over history is demanded in many applications, such as social network and bibliographies. Typically, people are interested in querying temporal graphs. Existing keyword search approaches for graph-structured data are insufficient for querying temporal graphs. This paper initiates the study of supporting keyword-based queries on temporal graphs. We propose a search syntax that is an extension of keyword search, which allows casual users to easily search temporal graphs with temporal predicates and ranking functions. To generate results efficiently, we propose a best path iterator, which finds the "best" paths between two data nodes in each snapshot regarding to three ranking factors. We develop algorithms that efficiently generate top-k query results. Extensive experiments verified the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach.

Learning-Based Algorithms for Graph Searching Problems

Abstract:We consider the problem of graph searching with prediction recently introduced by Banerjee et al. (2022). In this problem, an agent, starting at some vertex $r$ has to traverse a (potentially unknown) graph $G$ to find a hidden goal node $g$ while minimizing the total distance travelled. We study a setting in which at any node $v$, the agent receives a noisy estimate of the distance from $v$ to $g$. We design algorithms for this search task on unknown graphs. We establish the first formal guarantees on unknown weighted graphs and provide lower bounds showing that the algorithms we propose have optimal or nearly-optimal dependence on the prediction error. Further, we perform numerical experiments demonstrating that in addition to being robust to adversarial error, our algorithms perform well in typical instances in which the error is stochastic. Finally, we provide alternative simpler performance bounds on the algorithms of Banerjee et al. (2022) for the case of searching on a known graph, and establish new lower bounds for this setting.

Abstract:We give a $(1.796+\epsilon)$-approximation for the minimum sum coloring problem on chordal graphs, improving over the previous 3.591-approximation by Gandhi et al. [2005]. To do so, we also design the first polynomial-time approximation scheme for the maximum $k$-colorable subgraph problem in chordal graphs.
