Abstract:A graph is chordal if it does not contain an induced cycle of length greater than three. We determine the minimum size of a chordal graph with given order and minimum degree. In doing so, we have discovered interesting properties of chordal graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we determine the maximum size of a nonhamiltonian-connected graph with prescribed order and minimum degree. We also characterize the extremal graphs that attain this maximum size. This work generalizes a previous result obtained by Ore [ J. Math. Pures Appl. 42 (1963) 21-27] and further extends a theorem proved by Ho, Lin, Tan, Hsu, and Hsu [Appl. Math. Lett. 23 (2010) 26-29]. As a corollary of our main result, we determine the maximum size of a $k$-connected nonhamiltonian-connected graph with a given order.

Abstract:Let G be a graph on n ≥ 3 vertices and H be a subgraph of G such that each component of H is a cycle with at most one chord. In this paper we prove that if the minimum degree of G is at least n /2, then G contains a spanning subdivision of H such that only non-chord edges of H are subdivided. This gives a new generalization of the classical result of Dirac on the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs.

Abstract:A local subgraph of a graph is the subgraph induced by the neighborhood of a vertex. Thus a graph of order $n$ has $n$ local subgraphs. A graph $G$ is called locally nonforesty if every local subgraph of $G$ contains a cycle. Recently, in studying forest cuts of a graph, Chernyshev, Rauch and Rautenbach posed the conjecture that if $n$ and $m$ are the order and size of a $3$-connected locally nonforesty graph respectively, then $m\ge 7(n-1)/3.$ We solve this problem by determining the minimum size of a $3$-connected locally nonforesty graph of order $n.$ It turns out that the conjecture does not hold.

The total chord length of maximal outerplanar graphs

Abstract:We consider embeddings of maximal outerplanar graphs whose vertices all lie on a cycle $\mathcal{C}$ bounding a face. Each edge of the graph that is not in $\mathcal{C}$, a chord, is assigned a length equal to the length of the shortest path in $\mathcal{C}$ between its endpoints. We define the total chord length of a graph as the sum of lengths of all its chords. For each order $n\ge 5$, we find outerplanar graphs whose total chord length is minimal among all graphs of the same order, and graphs whose total chord length is maximal among all graphs of the same order. We give a complete characterization of those graphs whose total chord length is maximal. We show that every integer value in the interval determined by the minimum and maximum values is the total chord length of a maximal outerplanar graph of the same order.

Abstract:Let G=(V(G),E(G)) be a graph. Determining the minimum and/or maximum size (|E(G)|) of graphs with some given parameters is a classic extremal problem in graph theory. For a graph G and e=uv@?E(G), we denote d(e)=d(u)+d(v)-2 the edge-degree of e. In this paper, we obtain a lower bound for the minimum size of graphs with a given order n, a given minimum degree @d and a given minimum edge-degree 2@d+k-2. Moreover, we characterize the extremal graphs for k=0,1,2. As an application, we characterize some kinds of minimum restricted edge connected graphs.

Abstract:A graph G is 1-planar if it can be drawn on the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. The family of 1-planar graphs with minimum vertex degree at least delta and minimum edge degree at least epsilon is denoted by P-delta(1)(epsilon). In this paper, it is proved that every graph in P-7(1)(14) (resp. P-6(1)(13)) contains a copy of chordal 4-cycle with all vertices of degree at most 10 (resp. 12).

Abstract:Let k be a positive integer and let G = (V(G), E(G)) be a graph with vertical bar V(G)vertical bar >= 4k. In this paper it is proved that if the minimum degree sum is at least 6k - 1 for each pair of nonadjacent vertices in V(G), then G contains k vertex disjoint chorded cycles. This result generalizes the main Theorem of Finkel. Moreover, the degree condition is sharp in general.

Abstract:The degree-based entropy of a graph is defined as the Shannon entropy based on the information functional that associates the vertices of the graph with the corresponding degrees. In this paper, we study extremal problems of finding the graphs attaining the minimum degree-based graph entropy among graphs and bipartite graphs with a given number of vertices and edges. We characterize the unique extremal graph achieving the minimum value among graphs with a given number of vertices and edges and present a lower bound for the degree-based entropy of bipartite graphs and characterize all the extremal graphs which achieve the lower bound. This implies the known result due to Cao et al. (2014) that the star attains the minimum value of the degree-based entropy among trees with a given number of vertices.

Abstract:A $k$-cycle in a graph is a cycle of length $k.$ A graph $G$ of order $n$ is called edge-pancyclic if for every integer $k$ with $3\le k\le n,$ every edge of $G$ lies in a $k$-cycle. It seems difficult to determine the minimum size $f(n)$ of a simple edge-pancyclic graph of order $n.$ We give lower and upper bounds on $f(n),$ and determine the maximum diameter of such a graph. In the $3$-connected case, the precise value of $f(n)$ is determined. We also determine the minimum size of a graph of a given order with connectivity conditions in which every edge lies in a triangle.

Abstract:A longest path in a graph is called a detour. It is easy to see that a connected graph of minimum degree at least $2$ and order at least $4$ has at least $4$ detours. We prove that if the number of detours in such a graph of order at least $9$ is odd, then it is at least $9,$ and this lower bound can be attained for every order. Thus the possibilities $3,$ $5$ and $7$ are excluded. Two open problems are posed.

Abstract:A hole in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of length at least four. A graph is chordal if it contains no holes. Following McKee and Scheinerman (1993), we define the chordality of a graph $G$ to be the minimum number of chordal graphs on $V(G)$ such that the intersection of their edge sets is equal to $E(G)$. In this paper we study classes of graphs of bounded chordality.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, let $\sigma_{2}(G)$ be the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in $G$. A chord of a cycle in a graph $G$ is an edge of $G$ joining two non-consecutive vertices of the cycle. In this paper, we prove the following result, which is an extension of a result of Brandt et al. (J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173) for large graphs: For positive integers $k$ and $c$, there exists an integer $f(k,c)$ such that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n \ge f(k, c)$ and $\sigma_{2}(G) \ge n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, each of which has at least $c$ chords.

Abstract:Constructing the maximum spanning tree $T$ of an edge-weighted connected graph $G$ is one of the important research topics in computer science and optimization, and the related research results have played an active role in practical applications. In this paper, we are concerned with the ratio of the weighted sum of a spanning tree $T$ of $G$ to the weighted sum of $G$, which we try to minimize. We propose an interesting theorem to simplify this problem and show that this optimal problem can be solved in polynomial time. Furthermore, we apply the optimal problem in chordal graphs.

Abstract:In this paper we get a structural property for a graph having the minimal least eigenvalue among all graphs of fixed order and given chromatic number, and characterize such graphs under the condition that the chromatic number is not larger than half the order of the graph. As a result, we obtain a lower bound on the least eigenvalue in terms of the chromatic number, and an upper bound on the chromatic number in terms of the least eigenvalue of a graph.

Abstract:A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a dominating set if each vertex has a neighbor in $S$ or belongs to $S$. Let $\gamma(G)$ be the cardinality of a minimum dominating set in $G$. The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest cardinality of a set edges $A\subseteq E(G)$ such that $\gamma(G-A)=\gamma(G)+1$. A chordal graph is a graph with no induced cycle of length four or more. In this paper, we prove that the bondage number of a chordal graph $G$ is at most the order of its maximum clique, that is, $b(G)\leq \omega(G)$. We show that this bound is best possible.
