Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:Hu Hong's criticism of Buddhism both inherits and transcends the traditional criticism.On the one hand,his criticism is theoretically integrated,profound and rational;on the other hand,his understanding of Buddhist principles is one-sided and superficial.As a result,Hu Hong's view of Buddhism is characterized by his replacement of "justice" with "prejudice",deconstruction of "that theory" with "this theory",and his request of "the metaphysical" to meet the needs of "the concrete".In short,Hu Hong's criticism of Buddhism enriches Confucianism and contributes to its further development.

Abstract:As a scholar in late-Ming and early-Qing Dynasty,Wang fuzhi not only paid attention to the study of Confucian classics, but also made a lot of comments on LAOZI. In the academic system of Wang Fuzhi,on the one hand,he made criticism of LAOZI:he thought that LAOZI theories of light ceremony,judo,self-cultivation are not conducive to the national and individual progress:on the other hand,Wang Fuzhi gradually affirmed the practical significance of LAOZI“static for manic monarch”and“retire after winning merit”and other thoughts. That is to say,he had a certain identity on LAOZI.

Abstract:Examining Zhang Zai's viewpoint of Buddhism from a cognitive perspective, we can find Zhang Zai's critical and repellent attitude towards Buddhism, which is involved in the fields of ontology, the theory of mind and the theory of cause and effect, the way of preaching and so on. On the ontological level, and from the aspects of movement of gas, the varied existential forms of void, the function of void and the reality of life, Zhang Zai proves the existence of the void, denies the Buddhist doctrine that everything is unreal and criticizes the Buddhist idea of karma on the basis of his gasification theory. And in respect of heart and Zhang Zai criticizes Buddhist thoughts of regarding the felling as the nature, destroying people,s nature, getting rid of the ethic and discussing the heaven's nature arrogantly, which indicates Zhang Zai's great wish to revive Confucianism and his firm consciousness of Confucian orthodoxy. However, it also reflects his bigoted attitude towards and misreading of Buddhism.

Abstract:Gao Panlong’s viewpoint of Buddhism is that the words “nature” and “good” which Buddhism claims are different from Confucian “principle”. Either judging by the time they appeared or by the content they talked, we can draw a conclusion that Buddhism and Confucianiam are not of the same school. Buddhism has some disadvantages. It disdains ceremony, has no emotion and is also selfish. This article concludes that Gao persisted in Confucianism, obeyed Confucian doctrine and excluded Buddhism unilaterally on the one hand, which demonstrates the essence of his thought. On the other hand, there are many mistakes in Gao Panlong’s cognition and evaluation about Buddhism.

Abstract:In his manuscript Rong An Guan Zha Ji,Qian Zhongshu offers harsh criticism upon Xu Yueqing,the Neo-Confucian poet of the late Song dynasty.His critical remarks contain abundant poetic thoughts.With reference to the interrelated contents in Tan Yi Lu,Song shi Xuan zhu and Guan zhui Bian,we can interpretate the connotation of Mr.Qian's remarks.Meanwhile,we should also probe into Mr.Qian's brilliant views on the relationship among Neo-Confucianism,moral integrity,and the poetry of the late Song dynasty,and thus reexamine the position of such elements as Neo-Confucianism and moral integrity in Mr.Qian's poetry evaluation system.

Abstract:This essay analyzes Zhu Xi's opinions on the differences between Confucianism and Buddhism on the basis of the following three aspects:the attribute of noumenon,the concern of ethic and the way of cultivating.As to the attribute of noumenon,Zhu Xi considered that Confucianism is "one" while Buddhism "two".In the aspect of ethic concern,Zhu Xi regarded that in Confucianism ethic was endowed by the nature.However,Buddhism considered ethic as a burden and aimed to get away from it.As to the way of cultivating,Zhu Xi held that Confucianism practiced according to the natural order.On the other hand,Buddhism sought peace and calmness in mind with intention.Therefore,Buddhism and Confucianism are different in both the root and the end.Zhu Xi reached the peak of North Song dynasty's scholars' discussions on the differences between Confucianism and Buddhism.His opinions could also inspire modern Confucians.Nevertheless,Zhu Xi's misinterpretation of Buddhism in his analysis,of course,should also be noticed.

Abstract:The flourishing of Confucian classics in the Han Dynasty sparked a series of ills in the late Han Dynasty.In the process of discussing the ills such as putting the incidental before the fundamental,the method of the fundamental and the incidental view appeared and eventually became ontological basis of metaphysics in the Wei and the Jin Dynasties.The ideas of Lao Zi were absorbed and became active in the late Han Dynasty.This is another key link connecting Confucian classics and the Wei and Jin metaphysics,and from this we may find clear traces from the social critical thoughts in the late Han Dynasty.

Abstract:Like any other religions, The tenet of Buddhism which is one of the big three rehgions in the world is in pursuit of standing aloof from worldly affairs, and is opposite to humanism. But when it was imported into China and combined with Chinese vulgar culture of Confucianism, Tanism and social life, it gradually got Chino-nationalization . The important character of Chinese Buddhism is its vivid agreement with worldly affairs. Abstract:This article investigates the thought of the mid-Tang scholar monk Shenqing through an examination of his Beishan lu. In this work, Shenqing launched a fervent attack against Southern Chan, while pressing for the harmonization of the Three Teachings. His critique of Southern Chan reflects his Theravadin tendency, as he expressed negative views about Southern Chan's violation of traditional Buddhist teachings. He specifically attacked its de-emphasis on the vinaya, and the fabrication of the 28-Patriarchs theory of transmission. In an effort to establish the orthodoxy of Southern Chan in early Northern Song, Chan clerics found it necessary to respond to Shenqing's critique, as clearly reflected in the writings of the monk Qisong. Beishan lu is a valuable source for a study of Shenqing's thought, and the unfolding of the harmonization of the Three Teachings. It also allows us to trace the historical unfolding of the Southern Chan movement from a different perspective.

ZhuXi insists on the idea of searching for the truth. As to the standards, Zhu’integrates and surpasses Song Learnings represented respectively by Cheng Brothers and Wang Anshi on the basis of philology and of looking for the end-result of philosophy.
