Abstract:In the Late Qing and the Republic of China,scholars had developed different paths in transforming traditional academics and bridging Sino-Western and old-new in the context of the evolution of Classical Studies and Historiography.Two distinct schools of Confucianism came into being in the Republic of China: one was the historical ″Guwen″ represented by Zhang Taiyan and his students,the other was the philosophic Jinwen represented by Liaoping and his students.With the aggravation of the National Calamity in the 1930s and revival of Confucianism,it was a common practice to promote Chinese culture and national spirits.Thus the transformation and practice of Confucianism became the focus in the discussion between the two different schools.During the dispute Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng,Liao Ping's students,argued with Zhang Taiyan and Huang Kan constantly about sinology and Neo-Confucianism,″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen,″ and ″Classical Studies″ and ″Historiography″ to clarify the origin and development of Confucian philosophy. After a careful study of Qing's academic history and looking into the relations between Dai Zhen's philosophy and Xun Zi,Zhang Taiyan emphasized the unique significance of Dai Zhen in Qing's Academic history.On the contrary,Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng resorted to traditional sinology and Confucian theories to question the construction of Dai Zhen's theory.Based on the examination of Examine Goodness,Li Yuancheng criticized Dai Zhen's doctrine of Ethics,Desire and Goodness as a misunderstanding of Mencius.Based on Guwen and centreing around the separation of Confucianism and Buddhism,Zhang Taiyan stressed the reliability of the historical account of the Six Classics to respond to the Skeptical School and illustrated the ideological and cultural tradition of China in the past two thousand years.Li Yuancheng had developed Liao Ping's theory and discussed with Zhang Taiyan the Rites and Spring and Autumn aiming to link ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ and to reiterate the Great Righteousness of Spring and Autumn.Meng Wentong,through his study of the development of Confucian philosophy in Zhou dynasty,Qin dynasty and the two Han dynasties,attempted to find the succession of Confucianism and Mencius's thoughts,to analyze the philosophy of ″humanity and destiny,″ to interpret the controversies over Mencius and Xun Zi,to clarify the origin of sinology,and to challenge Cheng Zhu Confucian Orthodoxy.In short,Liao Ping's students had constructed a Confucian system based on the ″Goodness″ of Mencius,theoretically paving the way for for Jinwen and Confucian historiography. The school of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan purported to explore the development of national cultures,focused on the language and history,and advocated the cultivation of mind and behavior.Thus,it had associated moral ethics with political and social pragmaticism and had started the practical academics of Classical Studies and Historiography.In contrast,Liao Ping's students emphasized on constructing an dynamic interaction between the meanings of Classics,institution,and historical facts,carrying forward the ″New Confucianism of Qin and Han,″ and elucidating the revolutionary spirit of Jinwen and system design.Dispute of ″Jinwen″ and ″Guwen″ manifested the core difference of the academic interests between the schools of Zhang Taiyan-Huang Kan and Liao Ping's students.A clarification of their differences and disputes is of importance in interpreting the diversification of modern Confucianism and providing intellectual resources for the building of a nation-state or a civilization-state.

Abstract:After the An-Shi Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty,many changes took place in such areas as politics,society,economy and culture.These changes constituted an abundant and complicated literary environment.The prosperous Yang's Family was closely related to the political background,social origin and regional environment of the literary development in the middle and late Tang Dynasty.Besides,there were a number of the Yang's Family members,who formed one of the factors which made great influence upon the literary development at that time.This article also studies the literary environment involving regions,party struggle,imperial examination and marriage in the middle and late Tang Dynasty,with the Yang's Family as an entry point.This is a new perspective concerning the research on literature of the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:Those poets relegated to southern China in the Mid-Tang Dynasty all showed a Qu Yuan complex in their poems.For example,under the influence of Qu Yuan's poems,such as LI SAO and JIU GE,Liu Yuxi and Liu Zongyuan expressed primarily a spirit of complaint and fury while the more rational Yuan Zhen and Bai Juyi both accepted Qu Yuan's character of loyalty and uprightness but refused to follow his will of consistence.In contrast,Han Yu and Li Shen expressed their complaint about innocent mistreatment by comparing their experience to Qu Yuan's miserable treatment.The Qu Yuan complex of the poets relegated in the Early and Prosperous Tang Dynasty was the very source of that of the relegated poets in the Mid-Tang Dynasty.In general,the former was rational while the latter was sentimental but more tragic than the former.

Abstract:The mainstream criticism of academics in the Han Dynasty was performed not only in the different social fielels, but between different academic systems and schools, and among the individuals. It touched upon the aspects such as the standpoints, methods, and achievements of the academic researchers and formed a series of relative fixed concepts, among which master of scholar, know-all scholar, vulgar scholar, and aged scholar were the representatives. Generally, the ordinary scholar showed his sincere respects to the first two kinds of scholars, while the know-all scholar expressed his contempt to vulgar scholar and those who were a bit less learned than the vulgar. Besides appointing a group of famous or great scholar, the court also showed its respect to aged scholar and experienced scholar. Historically, the essential thinking of the mainstream criticism of academics influenced the academic development of the Han Dynasty politically and academically.

Abstract:Sima Guang's theory of medium harmony was the most important idea interpreted in his Golden Mean.According Sima Guang,a gentleman learns to control his mind,and the key to control his mind is to adhere to medium harmony in keeping his mind.The medium harmony refers to the moral of non-excess and non-lack,meaning a scholar should make his best adhere to the medium harmony prior to mental excitement.However,a mental excitement has occurred in the context of non-excess and non-lack,then how should the gentleman adhere to the medium harmony prior to mental excitement in the context of mental excitement that occurred.In terms of Taoist theory,this offers a problem,which was already criticized by Cheng Ying and Zhu Xi.However,the problem Sima raised offered a guide to Taoist consideration.In this sense,Sima Guang theory was of rather active significance to the later development of Taoist ideology.

Abstract:During the middle of the Ming Dynasty when the doctrine of back to the ancients dominated in the circle of thinking,Tang Yin's view on literature had some spiritual similarities and different value priorities with the Former Seven Geniuses' doctrine of back to the ancients,Wang Yang-ming's ideaology and the Tang-Song school's inherent qualities.They had both similarities and differences in terms of philosophy,poetic theory,poetic proposition,and poetic creation.Tang Yin and other Wuzhong scholars,agreed with the Former Seven Geniuses' doctrine of back to the ancients,but the seven aimed to restore the classic poetry with Confucian traditions,while the Wuzhong scholars advocated the free presentation of emotions and talents.Tang Yin and Wang Yangming had some similarities in favor of the subjectivity of humans,but Tang Yin paid more attention to humans' emotions,natural requirements and individuality than his contemporaries.In terms of literary creation,Tang Yin acclaimed the real and natural expression of feelings and emotions,which had some similarities with the Tang-Song school's coherence of words and feelings.It is right to say in some way Tang Yin's literary creation influenced and enhanced the changes of the academic trend of the middle of the Ming Dynasty,and hence the role and influence of his distinctive creation can not be denied.

Abstract:The Tang Dynasty was a period of cultural flourishing in ancient China and an important stage in developing Taoism philosophy. This paper aims to explore the intellectual origins of Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy, analyse its formation and development background, and examine its influence on contemporary thought. Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy drew from the essence of various schools of thought in pre-Qin China, integrating Laozi's Taoism ideas, Zhuangzi's concept of nature, and the Taoism notions of self-cultivation. Influenced by the social context of the Tang Dynasty, Taoism philosophy flourished. The changing social and political environment, cultural exchanges, intellectual integration, and the relationship between Tang Dynasty literati and Taoism philosophy profoundly impacted the formation and development of Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy. Emphasising the harmony between the universe and humanity, Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy focused on moral cultivation, the pursuit of personal enlightenment, and social care and governance. It exerted a far-reaching influence on later generations and continues to hold significant value in contemporary thought. In-depth research into the intellectual origins and connotations of Tang Dynasty Taoism philosophy is of great significance for enriching and expanding the development of Chinese philosophy and providing wisdom and guidance for contemporary society.

Abstract:Abstract Studies on Tao Yuanming have often focused on his personality, reclusive life, and pastoral poetry. However, Tao’s extant oeuvre includes a large number of poems on history. This article aims to complement current scholarship by exploring his viewpoints on life through a close reading of his poems on history. His poems on history are a key to Tao’s perspectives with regard to the factors that decide a successful political career, the best way to cope with difficulties and frustrations, and the situations in which literati should withdraw from public life. Examining his positions reveals the connections between these different aspects. These poems express Tao’s perspectives on life, as informed by his historical predecessors and philosophical beliefs, and as developed through his own life experience and efforts at poetic composition.

Abstract:Han Yu and Yao He were important literary master from the mid Tang Dynasty,both leaving significant heritage in the history of Chinese literature. Although researchers seldom compare them in parallel,these two masters confronted the same issue of worldliness and solitude,since both of them were civil officials rising from the landlord class.Worldlinessmeans the speculation,hustle,and glamour of office,whilesolitudefocuses on the simplicity,tranquility,and peace of retreat in mountains and woods. Troubled by these conflicting aspirations,both the two masters had experienced the inward turn from aspiring to benefit the society to maintaining individual goodness. Such a turn conveys their concern and construction of their private world,whose prominent feature is the pursuit of leisure lifestyle of civil officials where they could manage their daily life with aesthetic attitude in their private world. Their leisurely and simple life attitude and elegant,quiet aesthetics have formed one of the essential elements of Chinese aesthetics.

Abstract:From late Song to middle period of Yuan Dynasty,Li-Xue(理学) has become the ideology.At the same times,the book named Yiluo-Yuanyuanlu(《伊洛渊源录》)which succeeded the Dao-Tong(道统) in Song Dynasty has been canonized and popularized.The means of Dao-Tung went near to Dao itself due to the book.Many scholars wrote the continuations in Ming and Qing Dynasties.The conception of Dao-Tong has also been in grain at that age through these books.It was an very important thing for Zhu Xi(朱熹) compiling the book of Yiluo-Yuanyuanlu.It was one of the steps of his works to construct the system of Li-Xue in his means.But an interesting thing was that the book of Yiluo-Yuanyuanlu has not been published when Zhu Xi was above ground.Obviously,this result was not Zhu Xi's original idea.This paper will indicate the reasons witch brought on this phenomenon.The most important reason was the counterviews of other scholars for example Wang Yingchen(汪应辰),Lv Zuqian(吕祖谦) and so on.Especially, Lv Zuqian's opponent view baffled the printed of the book.This circumstance suggests that we should think much of the multiformity of the intellect of Song Dynasty before the Li-Xue became ideology.

Abstract:In 1330,Yuan Government conferred posthumously"Secondary Saint"on Mencius,which was only next to Confucius' "Saint".Up until then,Mencius promotion movement launched by Han Yu had been ended.But,the traditional point that Mencius was the orthodox Confucius' successor in Confucianism is not based on the Analects of Confucius.There was not enough evidence to support the point.In fact,Mencius and Confucius have great different opinions in "Human Nature"," Ren" and "Study and Thought",so more discussions should be held about Mencius' orthodox position in Confucianism.

Abstract:When discussing modern Chinese thought, it is customary to place Critical Review and New Youth in a dichotomous relationship. This paper argues the opposite, emphasizing the "connection" between the two. Specifically, through the debate between Hu Shi and the key members of the Critical Review group-Mei Guangdi and Wu Mi-at a wedding banquet held at the YMCA in Nanjing on December 1, 1923, this paper points out that there was no lack of "friendship" between them despite their opposing views, for, with the exception of a few in the group who criticized the use of vernacular Chinese, Mei and Wu approved of cultural reform. That is, Hu Shi and the Critical Review members were highly complementary in their understanding of the "new" and the "old"; the latter was only disapproval of the radical form of New Culture. However, unlike Hu Shi who emphasized the equal importance of elites and non-elites in National Studies, the Critical Review scholars stressed the role of the elites and the connection between traditional Chinese thought and New Humanism.
