Abstract:This paper presents a design of large dynamic range accurate digitally programmable delay line with 250-ps resolution on a single field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip. This design adopts Time-to-Digital conversion(TDC) technology, counter-based delay technology and small range digitally programmable delay line technology. When working with an oscillator with frequency accuracy of +/- 1ppm, and when the delay range is within 0 similar to 0.1 ms, the delay accuracy of our design can reach +/- 350ps.

Abstract:A compact and low-cost echo delay control method for pulse radar testing is proposed. Unlike the traditional delay technology based on surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter and fiber delay line, this paper provides a field programmable gate array (FPGA) based delay control method to fulfil the tasks of radar pulse acquisition, storage and delayed forwarding. Programmable resources of phase lock loops (PLL) and memories within the FPGA are used. Experiment results show that the proposed approach can be used for making a controllable pulse echo delay platform with the minimum delay step is less than 1ns, and the maximum delay time is greater than 200us.
Application of Digital Pulse Delay Device in Range-Gated Control for Range-Gated Imaging Lidar

Abstract:Digital pulse delay device is one of the key techniques of range-gated imaging lidar. At present, Digital method and analog method are the two main implementations of pulse delay device. Digital method is mainly achieved by counter or FIFO memory. With the development of Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD), the digital delay device can be achieved with a single chip of CPLD. With this method, the digital delay device enjoys the advantages of high integration, high reliability and strong ability of anti-electromagnetic interference. However, since the maximum clock frequency of CPLD is limited, the improvement of temporal resolution is restricted. Analog method is mainly realized by the delay-line, which is one of the dedicated integrated circuit. Using this method, a higher time resolution can be arrived. In this paper, the timing characteristics of the delay signal are analyzed. Three design options are presented and the advantages and deficiencies are discussed. Based on the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the digital delay device combined with the delay chip AD9501 and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is chosen because of its large dynamic range and high accuracy. Besides, the output pulse width can be adjusted conveniently. The digital delay device is simulated and the result shows that the delay control for range-gated imaging lidar is feasible.

Abstract:A radar signal processing system characterizing high instantaneous dynamic range and low system latency is designed based on a specifically developed signal processing platform. Instantaneous dynamic range loss is a critical problem when digital signal processing is performed on fixed-point FPGAs. In this paper, the problem is well resolved by increasing the wordlength according to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of the algorithms through the data path. The distinctive software structure featuring parallel pipelined processing and “data flow drive” reduces the system latency to one coherent processing interval (CPI), which significantly improves the maximum tracking angular velocity of the monopulse tracking radar. Additionally, some important electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) are incorporated into this signal processing system.

Abstract:Since there is no Doppler resolution capability in a high resolution range imaging radar with normal wide-band signals, it is impossible to identify two or more targets with different radial velocity in the same range gate and provide enough signal-to-clutter ratio for reliable detection of moving target. This paper provides a modified design method of the step frequency waveform to solve these problems effectively by means of two-dimensional signed processing. The coherent pulse train is combined with the frequency-stepped modulation to form a new waveform. The former is designed to provide the Doppler frequency measurement and resolution and the clutter cancellation as well as the data used for compensation of additional range-Doppler coupling; and the latter remains to provide enough range resolution for the high resolution range imaging. Examples of data simulation are given to show these achievements mentioned above. Finally, some considerations on this waveform design are discussed.

Abstract:A design and implementation method of radar time domain waveform based on FPGA is presented in this paper, in order to achieve the waveform library building, waveform selection or agility in the transmitter of cognitive radar system. First, the resident phase method and the waveform parameter design method are used to feedback the emission waveform parameters. Then, the DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) technique is used to design the adjustable parameter module. Finally, the variable waveform output is generated by calling the lookup table. Simulation analysis and FPGA implementation show that the results have the advantage of waveform variable, parameters adjustable and having synchronization signal. Traditional signal generator or signal generated methods cannot meet the specific needs of cognitive radar signal processing system test because of the immutable or not applicable waveform. The realization of waveform variability is the first step towards intelligent radar.

Abstract:This paper introduces a wideband waveform structure that leverages multiple degrees of freedom across multisubpulse, encompassing phase, carrier frequency, and subpulse duration. Intra-pulse Frequency agility is specifically concerned to achieve low probability of interception (LPI). Meanwhile, a processing framework capitalizing on the multi-subpulse characteristics of the waveform is proposed. Each subpulse serves as a matched filter for echo processing, followed by range gate adjustments based on subpulse durations for each filtered echo. Subsequently, Doppler processing is implemented using either discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or compressed sensing (CS). Besides, the derivations of Doppler tolerance, unambiguous velocity and range, range and Doppler resolutions based on the proposed waveform and corresponding processing method are demonstrated under some specific parameters. Numerical simulations emphasize the superior performance of the proposed approach in anti-interception and reliable detection of highvelocity targets compared to conventional waveforms. Additionally, the semi-physical experiment validates the practical feasibility of the proposed waveform design and processing scheme.

Abstract:The modulated frequency stepped pulse radar signal is to use Chirp signal as the in-burst pulse of a frequency stepped pulse string radar signal, so it has the advantages of both Chirp pulse and frequency stepped burst. The signal processing algorithms should firstly do Chirp pulse compression, then do IFFT to acquire the high range resolution. This paper analyzed the algorithms of this kind of radar signal processing, implemented the signal processor by the most powerful DSP chip TMS320C6201, analyzed the finite word length effect caused by the TMS320C6201, and offered the solution to this effect.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of delay pulse circuit with 1ns resolution for both driving ultrasonic array transducers and digital receive beamforming for ultrasonic phased array system. The circuit which can supply pulses with a 1ns time resolution employs the phase shifting with phase locked loop (PLL). In this way, 6 phase clocks with 1ns phase difference are generated, which are used to drive channel counters. Delay pulses of each channel are generated by counter. Based on this circuit, a design of digital receive beamforming with 1ns delay resolution is also presented. The design adopts a phase shifting technique of PLL to generate six clocks with 6ns periods and 1ns phase difference, which are selected as a non-uniform sampling clock to drive the A/D Converters according to the receive focal points. The delay pulse circuit is built with low-cast Field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) components. By employing the novel architecture, the circuit has been achieved in FPGA. The simulation results are compared with two programmable delay chips and show that the proposed architecture achieves satisfactory performance for pulse delay. Abstract:An improvement on linearity stepped frequency(SF) radar waveforms——The phase coded stepped frequency(PCSF) radar waveform was proposed.By combining intra-pulse phase and inter-pulse frequency modulations,PCSF enabled larger frequency step sizes than SF.With the same process system effective bandwidth,the PCSF technique made bandwidth traverse faster,time of sent pulse cluster shorter,data rate higher and Doppler sensitivity lower.And a two stage pulse compression process is employed to achieve a variable range resolution.The results of a simulation of the characteristic mentioned above are presented to illustrate the resolution properties of PCSF.

Abstract:Stepped frequency radar is a well known scheme to generate high range resolution profile (HRRP) of targets. Through appropriate radar parameter design, the radar enables both unambiguous velocity measurement and high resolution ranging within a single dwell in a high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) mode. This paper analyzes in detail the design principle of the HPRF stepped frequency radar system, the solution to its ambiguity issue, as well as its signal processing method. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed radar scheme can work independently to solve the problem of motion compensation, and is therefore highly applicable to many new types of radar.

Abstract:This paper presents a high-resolution, small deadtime digital delay method where the performance is independent of the total delay time. We have implemented a small dead-time (50ns) and high-resolution (/spl plusmn/0.9ns) delay generator with delay time up to hundreds of milliseconds. We have proposed a high-resolution whole-body PET with 12 module PMT-quadrant-sharing (PQS) detector design. This high-resolution delay unit is an important part in the new PET electronics where a high-yield-pileup-event-recovery (HYPER) method is used. Using HYPER method, the energy/position signals are generated or digitized at the arrival of the next event(arriving at a random time from present event) if the the present event was piled-up by the next event, so the energy/position signals are no longer synchronized with the leading edge of the triggering signal. To detect a coincidence event by using the HYPER method, the original trigger signal has to be delayed by a fixed time (1.5/spl mu/s for BGO) and a new synchronization process has to be setup between the delayed trigger and the energy/position signals before they can go to the coincidence detection electronics. Each HYPER processor needs one delay generator; there are 48 delay units inside the whole PET system. This high resolution delay generator also can be used in other PET systems where a delay is needed to synchronize the fast timing trigger to the slower integration or detector address outputs; this low timing-jitter delay can also be applied to automatic test equipment and communications.

Abstract:This paper presents a new design scheme for broadband digital reception for pulse stepped-frequency radars. Based on the characteristic of stepped-frequency signals, the echoes of radar pulse chains are grouped and under-sampled with different sampling clocks. With the combination of band limited sampling effect and digital quadrature mixing, the signal frequencies are moved to baseband in order. A digital cascaded low pass filter is used to filter the baseband samples with the optimized configuration. The spurious modulation phenomenon and I/Q amplitude/phase errors, which often occur in analog circuits, are removed by the digital technologies presented here. The receiver design and synthesis procedure performed by Quartus II shows that real-time processing can be ensured with effective computation. Good imaging results are provided.

Abstract:We report on the development and performance of a digitally controlled phase delay with a step of 280 femtoseconds and a dynamic range of 230 picoseconds. Details of the device design and the simulations as well as comparisons with laboratory measurements will be discussed. We describe how we have used this ASIC to stabilize a digital clock to a precision of less than one picosecond.

Abstract:The ground-penetrating radar working principle as well as the characteristics of the radar echo signal was in-depth analyzed,the data collection method was adopted based on equivalent time sampling technology:using high-precision digital programmable delay devices to produce a stable stepping clock,as a sequential step sampled synchronization signal,simultaneously,usingPC machine + MCU + CPLDto achieve the clock control of data collection,storage and transmission.Compared to previously using analog circuit technologies produced stepping sampling pulse,this method has advantages of simple circuit,high precision,good stability and strong rea-time.Using a standard sine wave through the acquisition circuit as measured signal to verify the design’s performance,and then compared the standard signal with the recovered signal.It can be qualitativly seen that the design can well restore the sound signal,it meets the design requirements.
A New Scheme for Pulse Integration of Direct Detection Radars

Abstract:Pulse compression can be performed in direct detection radars by using a newly proposed stepped time intervals coding pulse train and corresponding correlation algorithm. At the receiver end, the envelop-detected signal is processed through a modified cross-correlation algorithm which removes all the range false peaks, leading to a perfect range sidelobe performance. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the new approach. Furthermore, the approach is easy to be implemented and compatible to the conventional radars. It can be used in direct detection radars where Doppler information is not required or the radars which are difficult to provide coherence, such as short pulse laser radar (also called lidar) and ultra-wide band impulse radar. The proposed approach can also be applied to the upgrade of conventional non-coherent radars.

Abstract:Adjustable-width pulse signals are widely used in systems such as test equipment for hold time, response time and radar testing. In this study, we proposed a pulse generation method based on virtual sampling with ultra-high pulse width resolution. In the proposed method, the sampling rate of a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) was adjusted to considerably improve pulse width resolution. First, the sampling rate was matched with the target pulse width resolution to digitally sample the ideal signal and generate digital waveform sampling points. Next, the signal bandwidth of the DAC was matched using a low-pass digital filter. Finally, the waveform sampling points were downsampled using an integer factor and output after digital-to-analogue conversion. The waveform pulse width information generated by high-frequency digital sampling was passed step by step and retained in the final output analogue signal. A DAC with a sampling rate of 1.25 GSa/s was used, and the pulse width resolution of the pulse signal was 0.1 ns. Theoretically, a sampling rate of 10 GSa/s is required to achieve 0.1 ns resolution. This method is simple, has a low cost, and exhibits excellent performance.

A Multi-Channel Digital Programable Delay Trigger System with High Accuracy and Wide Range

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-channel Digital Programmable Delay Trigger System (DPDTS) with high accuracy and wide delay range, which can be widely used in laser system and electron accelerator. This DPDTS mainly makes up of reference clock module, user interface and control module and Digital Programmable Delay Trigger (DPDT) module which is implemented on a Xilinx V6LX75T FPGA. In this DPDTS, DDS algorithm is used in frequency control, while soft microprocessor MicroBlaze is instanced for user interface control. Time delay is separated into wide range coarse delay and narrow range fine delay. Wide range coarse delay is achieved through counter, while narrow range fine delay is achieved through cascaded absolute delay element called IODELAYE1 in FPGA. Besides, the DPDTS, with the ability of automatic clock switch, can protect the controlled laser system. Experiment result shows that, for this designed DPDTS, the accuracy is approximate 78 ps, the time jitter is 55 ps, and the delay range is from 0 to 999 us with delay step of 78 ps.
