Abstract:Roughage is an essential part of ruminant diets.The shortage of roughage is harmful to the animals' performance and health,and restricts the rapid development of herbivore animal husbandry in China.The major roughages of goat industry in tropical China include forage,shrub foliage and agricultural byproduct.This paper reviewed the research progress of the development and utilization of these roughages,includinge nutritive value evaluation,digestive characteristic and the effect of animal performance,providing a reference for researchers and producers in this field.

Abstract:Buckwheat is native to China.The cultivated species,Common buckwheat and Tartary buckwheat, are distributed widely throughout the globe,whereas the southwest of China has an abundance of wild buck-wheat species.Buckwheat has good nutritional qualities,containing not only protein,fiber,and carbohydrates, but also rutin and other antioxidant substances.The crop is highly resistant to disease,pests,and barren,with high adaptability and a short growth period;some of the wild species are especially rich in leaves and are easily recovered after clipping.Buckwheat has emerged as a forage with great potential,but its value as a food source and prospects for development are currently underexplored.In this paper,we have introduced the history and current status buckwheat forage,reviewed the applications of buckwheat in pigs,ruminants,and poultry,dis-cussed the problems of buckwheat forage,and evaluated future research prospects.

Abstract:As a traditional fiber plant, kenaf also has tender branches and leaves which contain high and fine protein. Many domestic and international studies showed that kenaf has a good value as forage. With the speedy development of the stockbreeding and the forage industry, the forage with high and fine protein comes to be urgent goods. Further exploration and research on the feeding value of kenaf will be more helpful for the solution of the deficiency of the forage with high quality protein in South China. This paper summarizes the international research progress and prospect of the feeding value of kenaf and pro-vides references for further study.

Abstract:Forage grass shortage is one of the main factors affecting the development of animal husbandry , especially the domestic live-stock production.“Double low” forage rape is the high-quality silage feed resource which has the characteristics of fast growth , high yield, higher feeding efficiency , and easy cultivation and extension .This review focuses on the application of forage rape in agricultural production in China , feeding value and applications in animal industry with an aim to provide a reference for the future use of forage rape in agriculture.

Abstract:As the global population increases and the economy grows rapidly, the demand for livestock products such as meat, egg and milk continue to increase. The shortage of feed in livestock production is a worldwide problem restricting the development of the animal industry. Natural woody plants are widely distributed and have a huge biomass yield. The fresh leaves and branches of some woody plants are rich in nutrients such as proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals and can be used to produce storage feed such as silage for livestock. Therefore, the development and utilization of natural woody plants for clean fermented feed is important for the sustainable production of livestock product. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the research progress, current status and development prospects of forageable natural woody plant feed resources. The nutritional composition and uses of natural woody plants, the main factors affecting the fermentation of woody plant silage and the interaction mechanism between microbial co-occurrence network and secondary metabolite are reviewed. Various preparation technologies for clean fermentation of woody plant silage were summarized comprehensively, which provided a sustainable production mode for improving the production efficiency of livestock and producing high-quality livestock product. Therefore, woody plants play an increasingly important role as a potential natural feed resource in alleviating feed shortage and promoting sustainable development of livestock product.

Abstract:The present research reviewed the forage planting systems in south of China,mainly including the grain-grass rotation system,tall grass planting system,perennial mixed pasture system,and forage maize(Zea mays)-Italian ryegrass(Lolium multiflorum) rotation system.The research progress in the planting system of forage maize-Italian ryegrass rotation was elaborated in detail,including breeding new forage varieties,high yield cultivation technology,utilizing rate of forage by livestock,temporal and spatial distribution of planting system.Finally,the problems and prospects in theoretical research and application were also discussed for the future use in practice.

Abstract:There are lots of problems like seasons limitation,difficulty in storage for the reason of high water content,low palatability and digestibility in using of pomace and pulp feed such as distiller'grains,cake or meal of peanut and cotton seed in livestock feeding.Currently,there are many kinds of storage method,for example,drying,microorganism fermentation,silage and so on will make a great contribution to resolve those problems.This article will make a summary of drying,biological fermentation,silage and extraction of nutrient taken research in China and abroad,then we can find a reasonable way to storage and use of pomace and pulp feed.

Abstract:Development and utilization of new legume pasture resources not only benefit forage quality improvement, but also provide suitable herbage species for implementation of China^s conversion of cropland to forest or pasture policy, and for ecological environmental construction. From 1982, goat^s rue (Galega orientalis) has gained a place of importance as a new legume pasture species with potential in the former Soviet Union. Northern Europe and Canada. It has high crop yield, high crude protein content, strong ecological adaptability, and sustainable persistence in pasture. This paper summarizes international assessment of the yield and feed value of goat^s rue, and reviews factors influencing its pasture establishment and growth. The utilization potential for G. orientalis in the northwest region of China is put forward.

Abstract:With the development and application of new technologies, biotechnology of forage and turf species has been rapid development in recent years in China, mainly in the field of omics and bioinformatics, new gene discovery and genetic engineering, and molecular marker technology. Omics and bioinformatics are essential to understand the molecular systems that underlie various plant functions. The rapid development of next-generation sequencing technology (NGS) makes genomics research undergoes a tremendous change, and promotes the development and application of bioinformatics tools. In recent years, along with the uses of genomics and bioinformatics tools, the studies of forage and turf species have developed rapidly, which reflected mainly in genomics and transcriptomics. The development of omics resources has progressed to address particular biological properties of individual forage and turf species, and also provide resources to explore new genes including new function or new sequence. The application of reverse genetics in some forage species by construction of mutant library also accelerated the new gene discovery. Genetic engineering in forage and turf species mainly focused on plant genetic improvement of biotic and abiotic stresses, quality, and transgenic vaccine. Environmental safety and broad-spectrum resistance were worth considering when the genetic engineering vector was constructed. Research in the field of molecular marker technology has been developed from the first- and second-generation to the third-generation. Molecular markers have been applied to analyze genetic diversity, marker-assisted breeding, genetic linkage map construction, QTL mapping, and germplasm or variety fingerprints. From these perspectives, we provide this review of the emerging aspects of forage and turf species researches in biotechnology based on the recent technological advances.

Abstract:Non-food biomass feedstock supply is one of the most important limiting factors in fluencing biofuel development.In this article,the definitions of non-food biomass feedstock and non-food land for bioenergy crops are clarified according to the situation present in China.After identifying the relationship between food security and biomass energy development,it is shown that sustainable non-food biofuel will be a multi-win-win industry to improve food and energy production,eco-environment,and the rural economy and would not have negative effects on food security of the country.This article also reviews the progress of non-food biomass feedstock research,its supply system and further studies currently need in China.It includes the following areas:1)availability of residue biomass,2)nonfood bioenergy plant screening,breeding,and production technology,3)feedstock production,collection,and logistics and mechanization,4)distribution and potential of the non-food land for biomass production,5)sustainability and standardization of nonfood biomass feedstock production and supply,6)development of demonstration and bioenergy agriculture,and 7)planning and policy on the non-food biomass feedstock industry.
