Abstract:As the most favorable market in the world in terms of scale and liquidity, the United States fixed-income market attracts foreign investors in pursuit of stable returns. After making a comparison between China and other countries in light of the scale, varieties and features of the investment in America’s fixed-income market, the author focuses on domestic commercial banks’ change in open interest of foreign currency bonds as well as the underlying loss incurred due to the subprime crisis. It is also suggested that commercial banks take more prudent investment measures to cut the investment proportion of risk assets.

Abstract:The marketization of interest rates is an important content of financial reform at present in china. It has great significance in playing the role of market mechanism and improving the efficiency of financial resource allocation. Reformation of Interest rates marketization has been explored for more than ten years,which has now entered the sprint stages. The marketization of interest rates will bring opportunities and challenges for commercial banks,The commercial banks should face this trend and seek measures actively to promote its development. This paper introduces the experience of Interest rates marketization reformation in the United States and analyses the impact of Reformation of Interest rates marketization on commercial banks and policy effects of interest rate,then based on this,puts forward some suggestions for commercial banks to adapt to challenge brought by marketization of interest rates.
The Risk Adjustment of Real Interest Rate

Abstract:Real interest rate is an important variable in the field of macroeconomic studies.As the interest rate in China is regulated,there are differences between the risk profile of commercial banks' loan portfolio and that of the whole enterprise investments,so the estimated real interest rate based on the benchmark rate is not a satisfactory indicator of corporate' financial cost.This paper constructs a two-sector model composed of Low-risk Enterprises(LRE) and High-risk Enterprises(HRE),analyzes the risk adverse behavior of commercial banks,and on this basis conducts risk adjustment of real interest rate based on the different risk structures between loan portfolios and enterprise investments.The results show that since 2000,LRE has accounted for 75% and 60% respectively in loan portfolios and enterprise investments;the risk-adjusted real interest rate is higher than that estimated simply on the benchmark rate,and the spread is 2.76 percentage points;and that the gap between the nominal lending rates of HRE and LRE amounts to 6.1 percentage points.

Abstract:The cautious analysis on benefit and cost as well as comparison between various advantages and disadvantages by People's Bank of China have led to the course of interest rates liberalization in our country. In the early days of new China, it was rational that interest rates were regulated strictly. But as reform is deepening, the benefit of interest rates liberalization is far beyond the cost. So interest rates liberalization is an inevitable outcome in our interest rates reform. Our country has chosen the pattern of gradual reform based on the analysis of benefit and cost.

Abstract:Using the Phillips-Loretan approach,this paper verifies the degree and speed of passthrough and rigidity of different interest rates in China,as well as the response of private loan interest rates to other interest rates during 2002-2012.The results indicate that the long-term pass-through from the interbank offered rates and deposit and loan interest rates to the treasury bond rate is incomplete,but that the long-term pass-through to private loan interest rates is overshooting.The long-term pass-through from the deposit and loan interest rates to the overnight interbank offered rate is incomplete,while that to the interbank offered rates of other maturities is complete.The short-term passthrough and adjustment speed of interest rates exhibit asymmetry.Therefore,before considering a full liberalization of interest rates,it is important to further enhance the competition of the financial system and the function of different interest rate systems,such as the interbank market and bond market.

Abstract:The economic efficiency of commercial bank branches is low,their output increase still depends mainly on operating expenses and the extensive increase of manpower input,etc and their efficiency can be improved enormously.The risk factor also has obvious influence on the economic efficiency of commercial bank branches.The average economic efficiency considering risk is 9.29 percent lower than that not considering risk.

Abstract:Purpose: Most prior studies on interest rate liberalization focused on banking system reforms and technological reforms, as well as liberalization’s impact on the profitability of commercial banks. Rarely considered were the effects of monetary policy or management’s leadership ability. This paper aims to investigate the influence of these two missing aspects and to explore whether or not such liberalization has had any influence on commercial banks’ risk resistance capacity and, if so, to identify the nature of that influence. Methodology: This article considers 18 commercial banks in China, operating from 2003 to 2018. Analyses include descriptive statistics, the Sobel test, the ADF stationarity test, and the VAR model co-integration test. Main Findings: Our results show that China’s interest rate marketization reform has a net positive effect on reducing bank risk, despite the new risks created by reform. Commercial bank anti-risk capabilities were also found to be improved both by China's monetary policy transmission for interest rate liberalization and by the strategic leadership capabilities of individual bank managers. Results: Based on these research results, this article encourages the Chinese government to strengthen appropriate laws and regulations to reduce the bankruptcy risk of commercial banks during interest rate liberalization. Commercial banks should build competent risk management teams with the ability to anticipate risks to allow their banks to better resist the disadvantages of interest rate liberalization reforms. Application: Based on these research results, this article can provide insights for the Chinese government, showing that appropriate laws and regulations should be strengthened to reduce the risk of bankruptcy that commercial banks may face as a consequence of interest rate liberalization. Originality/Value: This paper contributes to the theory of interest rate liberalization and anti-risk capability of commercial banks, by conceptualizing new constructs from strategic leadership and monetary policy transmission theory. It finds that market-oriented rate reform has increased interest rate risk and complicated the term structure. Commercial banks should, therefore, improve their operational management capabilities and optimize their internal governance decision-making mechanisms.

Abstract:The paper studies the risk behavior and capital adjustment strategy of China’s commercial banks under regulatory capital discipline.We find that the regulatory pressure doesn’t significantly affect the risk behavior of commercial banks.The regulatory pressure doesn’t affect the capital adjustment of the commercial banks which have already violated regulatory capital requirement.Whereas,the commercial banks which don’t violate the regulatory requirement but approach the regulatory threshold will react to the regulatory pressure by the means of fine-tuning affiliated capital to increase capital adequacy ratios.Our findings have two following implications.Firstly,capital regulatory does not always play the role of reducing the risk-taking behavior of commercial banks,because commercial banks which face the regulatory pressure don’t necessarily reduce risk assets to increase capital adequacy ratios,they also can utilize and manage capital instruments to meet the regulatory requirement.Secondly,the authorities should push and implement classified capital regulatory for banks with different styles and sizes,and study the feasibility and rationality of the actions and means of classified regulatory sanctions.

Abstract:The interest rate is a vital tool of monetary policy and is taken into account when the central bank and the government deal with variables such as capital flows, inflation, unemployment and investment. In the context of financial crises, central banks are given the key task of growing the national economy and maintaining financial stability. Formulating monetary policy, in particular lowering or increasing interest rates, is therefore under close scrutiny. This article first discusses how China's central bank has been using interest rates as a key policy tool in and after the latest financial crisis. Against this background, some “domestic” challenges of adjusting interest rates will be discussed. China's latest decision to let banks set lending rates freely by removing an artificial floor is a new policy move that has triggered tremendous market reactions. However, it will be argued in this article that this deregulatory move is probably simply another gesture from the new leadership to deepen economic reform without touching upon vested-interest groups.

Abstract:Management on interest rate risk is an old-line topic in the theory of modern commercial banks.Interest rate risk of home mortgage has been fastened on banking system in China in result of lower interest rate marketization and oversimplified home mortgage tools,which has threatened the soundness and safety of China's financial system.In this paper,the authors analyze the characteristics of interest rate risk of home mortgage in China based on the traits of China's housing financial system and current national economy trend,both in qualitative and quantitative perspective.In order to reduce interest rate risk in banking system,government should not only implement principal risk controlling rules on commercial bank,but also find solutions from the view of financial market foundation,such as mortgage tools improving and financial market creating.

Abstract:Abstract Modern theories attach much attention to interest rate-related problems. We discuss the impacts of the interest rate liberalization, in China, for ten commercial banks of three markedly different ownership types. The methodology is based on revisited interest rate sensitivity analysis, duration analysis and value-at-risk analysis. The situation is examined within both vertical (composition of operating income and interest rate sensitivity gap for the ten banks in the same year) and horizontal (one bank over a 7-year period) aspects. Thereafter, we discuss the present management of interest rate risks by such banks. We conclude with several suggestions on how such commercial banks risk management can be refocused and on how their cases can be used for comforting other banking cases.

Abstract:With the advancement of China's interest rate marketization reform, commercial banks' net interest margin has narrowed. This paper selects 16 representative listed banks as the research object and conducts an empirical analysis from the two dimensions: profit level and profit structure. The study finds that the marketization of interest rates promoted the narrowing of net interest margins caused by the narrowing of net interest margins, and the profitability of commercial banks was suppressed. The narrowing of net interest spreads forced commercial banks to actively expand their intermediate business activities and adjust business structure correspondingly. The narrowing of net interest spreads has different impacts on the profitability of commercial banks of different sizes.

Abstract:This paper measures the efficiency of China' s 14 major commercial banks and compares them with top 100 banks across the world by the model of SFA taking commercial environment differences into account.The result shows that the mean values of efficiency of China' s banks are lower than those top 100 commercial banks during 2001 - 2007,while come close or even outstand them since 2008.The paper further analyzes the factors that lead to efficiency differences between domestic and foreign banks and the turnover.The turnover is mainly due to the improvement of business structure,profitability and assets management quality,as well as stronger economic growth.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the financial supervision authority utilizes the restrictions of capital constraints imposing on commercial banks the need to develop the macro economy. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses multilateral game to deduce the loan characteristics of banks, vector and void coordinates to analyze the behavior choices of banks under capital supervision, sets up an index to describe the risk preference of banks, and analyzes the process with Chinese data empirically. Findings This paper finds big banks have a loan preference for big enterprises and small banks have a preference for establishing a bank syndicate to pursue large projects. Further, the paper notes the conditions by which the heterology banks choose loans across the border and proves that changes of capital requirements would force the credit structure of the commercial banks to adjust along an efficient frontier broken line or an efficient frontier plane under the conditions of interest rate regulation or interest rate marketization, respectively. Research limitations/implications It is very complex to describe the choices of risk behavior of banks and the simple supervision method needs to be adjusted. Practical implications This paper finds that banks show risk preferences of credit structure, and capital constraints would affect it greatly; regulators should guard against capital constraint softening. Originality/value It is the first time that the conditions of banks beyond the loan border have been studied and the behavior adjustment of banks using the vector and void coordinate analyzed.
