Survey on the understanding of AIDS and related behavioral habits of 1200 rural women in Henan Province

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The study aimed to assess the current situations on the understanding of AIDS and the related behavioral habits among 1200 rural women in Henan, so to provide a scientific reference for the prevention of AIDS in rural women. METHODS 1200 rural women aged between 20 and 50 from Xincai, Taikang, and Gushi Counties were surveyed by using a questionnaire designed by our research group and epidemiology experts to investigate the current situations on the understanding of AIDS and the related behavioral habits among the women. RESULTS In general, the women received only junior high school education, and taking care of the children and elderly was the main task of the women. The women lacked AIDS-related knowledge and rarely communicated with their husbands on the phone. 21.5% of the husbands used condoms when returning home, and 77.0% had never used condoms. In addition, hygiene habits of the rural women were considerably poor and their health was in poor conditions in general. CONCLUSION Rural women are among the high-risk population for HIV infection. Urgent need exists for the government to implement effective forms of education on the women and intervention of behavioral habits should be emphasized.
