Abstract:A new dynamic fuzzy neural network(DFNN) was proposed based on neural network and fuzzy engineering according to the mathematical expression of cost estimation.To resolve the problem of little information provided and the big grain degree of cost estimation in the product conception design process.DFNN is dynamic in the learning process due to the continual shift of the number of recessive layers and dimensions based on the fuzzy knowledge.After analyzing the learning process and fuzzy knowledge of DFNN,DFNN dynamic arithmetic methods of DFNN were presented including layer dynamic,dimension dynamics and function dynamics. DFNN was used to estabish the framework of cost estimation and the cost model for product conception design were established.The developed corresponding software based on DFNN was proved to has more powerful information dealing ability through examples of an excavator boom an oil crock.The DFNN also improves the flexibility of the cost estimation model.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency,a BP neural network-based construction cost estimate model was put forward.With detailed analysis of municipal drainage pipeline engineering project characteristics and work content,the model found out the influence of the main factors of municipal engineering cost,established the mapping relationship between the cost-offecting factors and the project cost.The characteristic factors of engineering were used as the neural network's input vector,the construction cost as neural network′s output vector,with the cost information of existing similar engineering as input,the network function was trained,the function was corrected and improved,so as to realize the space mapping from the engineering characteristics input space to projected and output space,and to reach the accurate estimation of municipal engineering cost.The experimental results show that the simulation model was feasible,and was an ideal municipal engineering cost estimate method,which can estimate municipal engineering drainage pipeline project cost with relatively high accuracy.

Abstract:In order to estimate the construction project cost more accurately and rapidly, this paper puts forward a method of cost estimation of construction project based on fuzzy mathematics. From the construction project cost analysis, the study sums up the impact factors of project cost, establishes estimation model using the method of fuzzy mathematics, and estimates the similarity nearness degree of the project to be estimated and the built project through comparison with typical engineering cases, and realizes the cost estimation with the principle of choosing the nearest, and the dynamic coefficient is used for estimation results correction. From the example, we can see that the model for cost estimation investment in construction project established with fuzzy mathematics method is easy to use with good applicability, which can realize rapid predict the estimated investment in construction project, satisfy the requirement of accuracy, enhance the management level of construction and the competition capacity of construction enterprise.

Abstract:BP neural network based on highway cross sections fill and cut information obtaining method is researched.The approximate fill area A\-f and cut area A\-c with different heights of fill or cut H at an arbitrary stake can be calculated quickly by the method,and the diagrams H～A\-f and H～A\-c can be drawn on highway longitudinal profile drawing for better knowledge of the fill and cut distributions of the whole route or a section,which are very helpful to highway longitudinal profile design.The method is applied easily in highway CAD system to enhance the automation and intelligence of highway survey and design.

Abstract:Estimating project cost rapidly and accurately has important practical significance for cost control. According to the basic principles of the neural network and the analysis on the characteristics of the project, six project characteristic categories are identified as neural network input variables. On the basis of the theoretical analysis, the paper brings up the model of rapid estimation of project cost based on the BP Neural Network, and several finished residence projects are selected as actual samples. Test results show that the precision meets the estimation requirements well. Therefore, the application of BP Neural Network is effective in rapid estimation of project cost.

Abstract:The real-time,accurate traffic speed is important for a successful traffic management system.Unfortunately,the most common form of traffic detector,the single loop detector,is incapable of providing speed measurements.A new method of speed estimation from single loop detector data is presented by using fuzzy neural networks method.The algorithm of the proposed method is implemented and evaluated using the field data from highway in Hangzhou City.Estimated speeds are compared with the observed speed data and also with results from g factor algorithm.The results show that the proposed me-thod has excellent estimation accuracy.So this method can be efficiently applied in traffic management system.

Abstract:Construction and maintenance works are carried out by contractors for a period of few months to few years. Those contracts show cost variations between the actual and estimated costs. For example, cost estimation of 3 out of 5 projects from 2015- 19 in Trashigang Dzongkhag have not only been underestimated but the actual costs are on average 27% higher than the estimated costs. Moreover, researches reveal that there are issues in cost estimation at the conceptual stage affecting the project progress and cost (Flyvberg, 2002). In this study neural network has been used to predict the actual cost based on the initial estimation and duration. During the study, it was discovered that the neural network demonstrated its usefulness as a tool for cost estimation and could be effectively employed by decision makers. However, it is important to note that the neural network is not designed to replace the entire cost estimation method. Instead, it should be regarded as one of the tools to be utilized alongside other methods when estimating costs.

Abstract:Investment risk of highway construction is contained in the whole life cycle from project initiation and design, to construction, to operation and maintenance; therefore investment risk assessment and corresponding precautionary measures are very important to project success. On the basis of China's realities and by Delphi Method this article established an evaluation index system of highway construction project investment risks consists of 19 factors from 6 aspects including political, economic and natural environment, project management, construction technology and operational management. Owing to the non-linear characteristics of the risk factors, the neural network toolbox of MATLAB software was adopted to build a $19* 12*1$ BP neural network evaluation model. Finally, this model was applied in investment risk evaluation of JL highway project in Jiangxi province of China; the results show that BP neural network model can be used as a practical effective investment risk evaluation method of highway construction project.

Abstract:Short-term traffic flow prediction is the basis of dynamic traffic control and guidance. In this article, a new fore- casting method, which combines fuzzy C-mean clustering and neural network techniques, is used to forecast short-term (traffic) flow. Based on the same real-time data, the forecasting results of this method are computed, and compared to other methods, e.g., Bp neural network and fuzzy neural network. The compute outcomes show that this method can produce (more) exact prediction results than other two methods.

Abstract:Developing a reliable project cost estimate is a challenge for any state highway agency (SHA), especially at the conceptual stage. A conceptual estimate is defined in this paper as the estimate prepared at the point at which only 30% of the design is complete. This paper describes a statistical approach to producing a reliable conceptual cost estimate when few project design details have been finalized and many assumptions still form the basis of the estimate. This approach used an analysis similar to the program evaluation and review technique (PERT), which is more commonly used in project scheduling, to assign certainty factors to cost estimates. The approach uses a combination of historical bid data for major roadway items whose quantities can be estimated early in the development process and historical percentages for other major components of the project, called allowance and contingency factors. The paper focuses on (1) the methodology developed to analyze the historical bid data; (2) the analysis of 14 highway corridors with 77 projects whose as-bid construction costs were more than $830 million; and (3) a cross-validation of the approach used to validate the accuracy of the predictive model. By using a PERT-type technique, construction costs were accurately predicted at the conceptual stage within ±20%. However, approximately 85% of the corridor costs were accurately predicted within ±15% of the actual cost. The proposed methodology provides a structured and consistent estimating approach that can be used by any SHA that needs to develop total project delivery estimates at the conceptual design stage.

Abstract:The quality of early cost estimates is critical to the feasibility analysis and budget allocation decisions for public capital projects. Various research have been attempted to develop cost prediction models in the early stage of a construction lifecycle. However, existing studies are limited on its applicability to actual projects because they focus primarily on a specific phase as well as utilize restricted information while the amount of information collectable differs from one another along with the project stages. This research aims to develop two-staged cost estimation model for the schematic planning and preliminary design process of a construction projects, considering the available information of each phase. In the schematic planning stage where outlined information of a project is only available, the case-based reasoning model is used for easy and rapid elicitation of a project cost based on the extensive database of more than 90 actual highway construction projects. Then, the representing quantity-based model is proposed for the preliminary design stage where more information on the quantities and unit costs are collectable based on the alternative routes and cross-sections of a highway project. Real case studies are used to demonstrate and validate the benefits of the proposed approach. Through the two-stage cost estimation system, users are able to hold a timely prospect to presume the final cost within the budge such that feasibility study as well as budget allocation decisions are made on effectively and competitively.

Abstract:Excessive postconstruction settlement of a highway seriously affects its service performance, a problem that deserves attention urgently. This paper describes an exploratory study on predicting postconstruction settlements of highways built on soft soil in China generated by moving traffic through mechanistic-empirical design. The mechanistic-empirical permanent deformation model proposed by AASHTO was employed in this paper, and the layerwise summation method was adopted to calculate total highway postconstruction settlements. Traffic-induced dynamic stress was obtained through a pavement dynamic model established previously by the authors and used as input to the mechanistic-empirical (M-E) design method. Localized parameters in the M-E model were calibrated through in situ road measurements at different project sites in China. Comparisons between the present work and the in-situ measurements of several highways in China indicate that the mechanistic-empirical design method can predict road postconstruction settlement in China.
Study on engineering cost estimation based on cost-significant theory and BP neural network theory

Abstract:Based on the reference to Chinese and foreign correlative theories and methods,this paper advances the model of cost estimation based on cost-significant theory and neural network theory.The cost-significant theory is put forward to solve the tedious operation issues by finding out significant items to simplify the operation difficulty of engineering cost estimates;then the back-propagation neural network model is made up according to the BP algorithm to"distill"CSIs and csf(cost significant factor)from the data and information of completed projects,which provides a practical solution for those problems according to the nonlinear theory.The basic theories of BPNN and CS are introduced and their applications are illustrated with an example.For example,we can see that the relative errors are so small that they can meet the accuracy demand of cost estimations after simulation.The result shows that the model based on cost-significant theory and neural network theory is accurate and successful.

Abstract:With the rapid development of expressway in China, the ground improvement is becoming more and more important. The decision of the ground improvement method often depends on the experience of an engineer. This paper sets up a module of multi-level fuzzy decision of the ground improvement method in the expressway construction which is mainly to set up multi-level structure module, to get value of the affected factors at rule level and index level, to set up the character index matrix of project level and to have a total evaluation on the projects. Combined with the project of ground improvement on the Second Cincture Road in Wuhan, a case study is carried out with satisfactory results.

Abstract:The paper introduces the neural network and fuzzy logic methods into on-ramp metering of urban freeway.In which,the advantages of these two methods are considered,namely,the learning ability,optimization ability,and interconnection structure of the neural network,and the human-like thought manner and professional knowledge integration of fuzzy logic method.The suitable input and output variables are selected by optimization,and are get fuzzification and unfuzzification.Then,the corresponding fuzzy inference rules are established,and the relation generating method and inference synthesis algorithm are also developed.The membership function styles and parameters are determined by the adaptive neuro training method.An example was also given to illustrate the proposed method.The results indicate an increase of operating efficiency and a decrease of accident rate with the application of on-ramp metering of neuro-fuzzy.

Abstract:This thesis applied the multilevel analysis and neutral network method,studied the evaluation indexes of expressway network and comprehensive evaluation model and set up four classes of evaluation index suitable for expressway network evaluation.In line with the quantitative and qualitative index,different dimensionless functions were adopted.Through neutral network modeling and network model analysis,taking into account of network evaluation characteristics and the number of evaluation index,a three level front feedback neutral network comprehensive evaluation model was developed.The model was used for the 2ndround expressway network planning evaluation in Jiangsu province.The results show that the selected evaluation indexes are rational and that the neutral network comprehensive evaluation mode has overcome the defect of other method.

Abstract:The reasonable estimation of the number of pavement works in the feasibility study stage of highway engineering construction project is one of the basis for the preparation of investment estimation. The selection of pavement structure layer and the calculation of thickness, the calculation of different terrain and pavement area is the main content of highway pavement quantity calculation in mountainous and hilly area. It is of great significance to select the correct calculation method according to different geological conditions. Through 10 engineering cases analysis, the paper analyzes the thickness and area calculation of the pavement structure of the mountain road. It is concluded that the pavement structure layer can be in the form of subbase + base + seal + surface layer. The influence of shoulder, subgrade retaining wall and middle separation zone should be considered in the calculation of pavement area.

Abstract:Effective traffic matrix estimation is the basis of efficient traffic engineering, and therefore, quality of service provision support in IP networks. In this study, traffic matrix estimation is investigated in IP networks and an Elman neural network-based traffic matrix inference (ENNTMI) method is proposed. In ENNTMI, the conventional Elman neural network is modified to capture the spatio-temporal correlations and the time-varying property, and certain side information is introduced to help estimate traffic matrix in a network accurately. The regular parameter is further introduced into the optimal equation. Thus, the highly ill-posed nature of traffic matrix estimation is overcome effectively and efficiently.

Abstract:Travel time is an important measurement used to evaluate the extent of congestion within road networks. This paper presents a new method to estimate the travel time based on an evolving fuzzy neural inference system. The input variables in the system are traffic flow data (volume, occupancy, and speed) collected from loop detectors located at points both upstream and downstream of a given link, and the output variable is the link travel time. A first order Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy rule set is used to complete the inference. For training the evolving fuzzy neural network (EFNN), two learning processes are proposed: (1) a K-means method is employed to partition input samples into different clusters, and a Gaussian fuzzy membership function is designed for each cluster to measure the membership degree of samples to the cluster centers. As the number of input samples increases, the cluster centers are modified and membership functions are also updated; (2) a weighted recursive least squares estimator is used to optimize the parameters of the linear functions in the Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy rules. Testing datasets consisting of actual and simulated data are used to test the proposed method. Three common criteria including mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute relative error (MARE) are utilized to evaluate the estimation performance. Estimation results demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the EFNN method through comparison with existing methods including: multiple linear regression (MLR), instantaneous model (IM), linear model (LM), neural network (NN), and cumulative plots (CP).

Abstract:Nowadays, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has been widely applied in traffic noise prediction to manage the spatial data and to realize the visualization of noise levels. But the common method we use to calculate the noise level of traffic has to sum up the noise levels of all the road segments logarithmically and that is really time-consuming. In order to accelerate the calculation process, a method of filtering road segments using GIS is proposed in this paper. This method focuses on selecting out the road segments which contribute the most to the noise level at the sensitive point. This approach can increase the computational efficiency in a large degree. Finally, this method is validated and proven to be accurate and efficient.
