Abstract:Polarizabilities of small Sn (n = 2–8) clusters are calculated by using the higher-order finite-difference pseudopotential density functional method in real space. We find that the polarizabilities of the clusters are considered to be higher than the value estimated from the ``hard sphere'' model using the bulk static dielectric constant. The computed polarizabilities per atom tend to decrease with the increasing cluster size. The polarizabilities are closely related to the HOMO-LUMO gaps and the geometrical configurations.

Abstract:The predicted lower energy structures of neutral carbon cluster C-10 are presented by using the particle swarm optimization method in combination with quantum chemistry calculation. Our results describe a wonderful diversity of C-10 configuration with the DFT and MP2 methods. For linear and cyclic clusters, the energy of most stable monocyclic structure with D-5h symmetry is lower by 1.38 kcal/mol than the transition isomers with D-10h symmetry at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results by others. All linear structures of C-10 cluster have been certified as the metastable states at different calculation methods in this work. Simulated infrared spectra reveals that the extensive electron localization exists in the D-10h configuration leading to the decreasing of the number of vibration modes compared with D-5h, configuration. The nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations indicate that planar C-10 system is a stable aromatic compound and the position used to calculate the aromatic indices can be affected by the most shielding or deshielded location that we employed. The contribution of the delocalized electrons to the pi-aromaticity is identical in C1(a) and C1(b). By the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) and canonical molecular orbital (CMO) analysis, we know that the highly symmetric structures have more energy degenerate CMOs and 2 center-2 electron bond connection, and monocyclic C-10 cluster is a globally doubly (sigma- and pi-) aromatic compound. Topological analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis show that there isn't any electrostatic type of interactions in C-10 structures, and much of negative natural valence electron configuration comes from high angular momentum orbitals. According to the electron configurations, the natural hybrid orbital is mainly composed of sp hybrid in the systems. It is worth mentioning that the competition of complicated many body effects plays a significant role in stabilizing the distorted configuration of C-10 cluster. Abstract:Formation of cluster-based materials requires a fundamental understanding of the resulting cluster aggregation processes. The Sn94- Zintl-ion structure can be viewed as a building block featuring a spherical aromatic species, leading to a cluster gathering upon oxidative coupling and/or mediated by transition metals. Here, we evaluate the spherical aromatic properties of [Sn9–Sn9]6-, [Ag(Sn9–Sn9)]5- and [(η4-Sn9)Ag(η1-Sn9)]7-, as aggregates of two Sn9 building units held together via oxidative coupling and mediated by a Ag(I) transition metal center. Our results from magnetic criteria of aromaticity show that the inherent spherical aromatic characteristics of the parent Sn94- cluster are persistent in the overall aggregate where the enabled shielding cones ascribed to each Sn9 unit are able to interplay between them, leading to an overlap of the shielding regions. Hence, the two approaches for bringing cluster units together are able to retain the inherent spherical aromatic features for each Sn9 unit, leading to a cluster-based dimer where the parent properties remain. Thus, further cluster-based materials can be envisaged from aggregation upon oxidative coupling and/or mediated by transition metals, where the constituent building blocks retain their initial features, useful to guide the formation of more complex cluster-based aggregates.

Abstract:In this work, an unbiased global search with a homemade genetic algorithm was performed to investigate the structural evolution and electronic properties of Snx− (x = 21‐35) clusters with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All the ground‐state structures for all these Snx− (x = 21‐35) clusters have been confirmed by the comparison of the experimental and simulated photoelectron spectra (PESs). It has been revealed that all Snx− (x = 21‐35) clusters are tricapped trigonal prism (TTP)‐based structures consisting of two (for sizes x = 21‐28) or three (for x = 29‐35) TTP units, with the remaining atoms adsorbed on the surface or inserted between TTP units. The gradually decreasing HOMO‐LUMO gaps indicate that these clusters are undergoing semiconductor‐to‐metal transformation. The average binding energies show that the structural stabilities of Snx− clusters are not as good as that of silicon and germanium clusters. It found that sizes x = 23, 25, 29, 33 have high relative stability.

Abstract:CnSm(-) (n = 2-7; m = 1, 2) clusters were investigated by using photoelectron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. We found that the vertical detachment energies of both CnS(-) and CnS2(-) (n = 2-7) clusters exhibit a strong odd-even alternation with an increasing number of carbon atoms: the VDEs of even-n clusters are higher than those of adjacent odd-n clusters. The most stable structures of the anionic and neutral CnS (n = 2-7) clusters are linear with the S atom locating at one end of the carbon chain except that the structure of C3S(-) is slightly bent. The ground state isomers of the anionic and neutral CnS2 (n = 2-7) clusters are all linear structures with two S atoms locating at two ends of the carbon chain. The electron affinities of the neutral CnS (n = 2, 4-7) and CnS2 (n = 2-7) clusters are determined based on the experimental adiabatic detachment energies of the corresponding anion species, because the most stable structures of the neutral clusters are similar to those of the corresponding anions.
Ligand-Free Supermolecules. [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4- as Single Bonded Zintl-Ions Cluster Based on Pd@Ge9 and Pd@Sn9 Assembled Units

Abstract:Intercluster bonding features are relevant to bringing building blocks on the road to molecularly conceived materials in a rational fashion. Such characteristics have been developed for coinage metal clusters resembling single, double, and triple bonded species, coined as supermolecules. Here, we extend such an approach to the understanding of main-group clusters pursuing evaluation of [Pd2@E18]4- clusters (E= Ge, Sn) involving the fusion from parent spherical aromatic [Pd@E12]2- building units. Our results denote an intercluster bonding provided by contribution from 2P and 1G shells centered at each building motif, leading to an overall bond order of 2.70 and 2.31 for [Pd2@Ge18]4- and [Pd2@Sn18]4-, respectively. In addition, 119Sn-NMR patterns were evaluated to complement the experimental characterization of a single peak owing to in-solution fluxional behavior for [Pd2@Sn18]4-, as three peaks owing to the three sets of unique Sn atoms within the structure. Magnetic response properties reveal that the spherical aromatic characteristics from the parent [Pd@E12]2- building units are retained in the overall [Pd2@E18]4- oblate cluster as two spherical aromatic units. Hence, the notion of superatomic molecules is extended to Zintl-ion clusters, favoring further rationalization on the making of cluster-assembled solids.

Abstract:The concept of aromaticity is primarily invented to account for the high stability of the conjugated organic compounds, which possess a specific structural and chemical stability with (4n + 2) π electrons. In 1988, quasi-aromaticity was theoretically proposed for Mo3S44+ core in Mo3(μ3-S)(μ-S)3(χ-dtp)3(μ-dtp)∙L compound (χ: chelating ligand; dtp: (EtO)2PS2−) illustrated by canonical molecular orbitals. However, the origin of the quasi-aromaticity and chemical bonding remain ambiguous, lacking a thorough analysis in terms of stability and quantitative measurement of the aromatic character. Thus, in this work we systematically reported the electronic structure and aromaticity of a series of polynuclear metal chalcogenide clusters [M3X4(H2O)9]4+ (M = Cr, Mo, W, Sg; X = O, S, Se, Te) to explore an efficient tool of NICS index values at specific points to measure the quasi-aromaticity and to figure out the (d–p–d) π three-center bonding as the predominant origin from the arrangement of three Mo atoms and three bridged X atoms. Interestingly, derived from the Mo3...S3 quasi-plane, the extended sandwich cluster model of a S3...Mo3...S3 (Mo3S6) structure can be seen as the seed unit of the popular MoS2 nanomaterials, with resemblance between both molecular and periodic systems regarding geometries, electronic structures, and chemical bonding. Additionally, the highly symmetric Mo3S4 core in [Mo3X4(H2O)9]4+ can be arranged in a staggered and stacked manner to create Mo6S8 building block, corresponding to the crystalline structures in BaMo6S8 Chevrel phases, albeit with slight deformations. Drawing upon the observed similarities between cluster models and materials, we propose a new concept termed "cluster-assembly" materials. This concept involves the expansion from a high-symmetry and/or aromatic stable cluster seed unit to form the corresponding derivative materials, presenting an alternative paradigm for investigating crystals and enriching our comprehension of the stabilities exhibited by both gasphase clusters and solid-state materials. The concept of "cluster-assembly" materials not only contributes to the formulation of design strategies for novel materials or stable clusters but also provides valuable insights into the extension of periodic aromaticity.

Here we report a systematic theoretical investigation on the geometry, electronic structure and chemical bonding of BnXn0/2‐ (n = 4, 6; X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, At, Ts) clusters, attempting to explore their bonding features, exceptional stability and the ligand effect. We find that the electronic structure and stability of BnXn0/2‐ clusters can be tuned by the size of the boron cage and electronegativity of the ligand. Fragment orbital energy matching and orbital overlap are of great importance to the covalency of the cluster. In addition to the ionic electrostatic interaction that dominates the bonding interaction and decreases as the ligand becomes heavier, multi‐center bonding covalency determined by the orbital interaction increases accordingly, attributing to the reducing electronegativity. The σ‐donations from the ligand to the boron cage as well as multi‐center two‐electron (nc‐2e) bonding contribute to the σ aromaticity and superb stability. This work reveals the foremost factors that determine the structure and stability of boron clusters, and provides insights into the nature of chemical bonding for species with boron cages and even bulk boron.
The potential energy surface and superatomic properties of the octahedral PtSn5 cluster

Abstract:Zintl (group IV elements) clusters with a special number of valence electrons often exhibit extraordinary structures and chemical bonding patterns, and the stability of them is rationalised by the Wade-Mingos rule. However, this rule is still limited for some Zintl clusters. Here, we find that the potential energy surface of PtSn 5 has a single deep funnel, which leads down to the octahedron of the global minimum. The AIMD simulations demonstrate that the octahedral PtSn 5 still has a good thermal stability at 1000 K. The molecular orbitals and AdNDP analyses reveal that the 20 valence electrons from five Sn atoms of the PtSn 5 fill superatomic shells resulting in an electronic configuration of 1S 2 1P 6 1D 10 2S 2 , and the electronic structure of the Pt atom is d 10 , well following the magic number of the Jellium model. The result is further confirmed by the density of states and the localised orbital locator. After the CO molecule is adsorbed on the PtSn 5 , it prefers to be located at the Pt atom. Due to the charge-transfer effect, the C–O bond length and stretching frequency appear to change significantly. Our work opens up the study on the Jellium model for Zintl clusters.

Abstract:Although Si or Ge is not known to form empty cage clusters such as the fullerenes, we recently found a unique 12-atom icosahedral tin cluster, Sn-12(2-) ( stannaspherene). Here we report photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical evidence that Pb-12(2-) is also a highly stable icosahedral cage cluster and bonded by four delocalized radial pi bonds and nine delocalized on-sphere sigma bonds from the 6p orbitals of the Pb atoms. Following Sn-12(2-), we coin a name, plumbaspherene, for the highly stable and nearly spherical Pb-12(2-) cluster, which is expected to be stable in solution and the solid state. Plumbaspherene has a diameter of similar to 6.3 angstrom with an empty interior volume large enough to host most transition metal atoms, affording a new class of endohedral clusters.
Ternary XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) Clusters: Planar Tetracoordinate Si/Ge/Sn/Pb Species with 18 Valence Electrons

Abstract:As one of the important probes of chemical bonding, planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) compounds have been receiving much attention. Compared with ptC clusters, the heavier planar tetracoordinate silicon, germanium, tin, lead (ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb) systems are scarcer and more exotic. The 18-valence-electron (ve)-counting is one important guide, though not the only rule, for the design of planar tetra-, penta-coordinate carbon and silicon clusters. The 18ve ptSi/Ge system is very scarce and needs to be expanded. Based on the isoelectronic principle and bonding similarity between the Al atom and the BeH unit, inspired by the previously reported ptSi global minimum (GM) SiAl42−, a series of ternary 18 ve XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters were predicted with the ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb centers. Extensive density functional theory (DFT) global minimum searches and high-level CCSD(T) calculations performed herein indicated that these ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters were all true GMs on their potential energy surfaces. These GMs of XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) species possessed the beautiful fan-shaped structures: XBe4 unit can be stabilized by three peripheries bridging H and two terminal H atoms. It should be noted that XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) were the first ternary 18 ve ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb species. The natural bond orbital (NBO), canonical molecular orbitals (CMOs) and adaptive natural densitpartitioning (AdNDP) analyses indicated that 18ve are ideal for these ptX clusters: delocalized one π and three σ bonds for the XBe4 core, three Be-H-Be 3c-2e and two Be-H σ bonds for the periphery. Additionally, 2π plus 6σ double aromaticity was found to be crucial for the stability of the ptX XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters. The simulated photoelectron spectra of XBe4H5− (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters will provide theoretical basis for further experimental characterization.

Abstract:Gas-phase PbMg n − ( n = 2–12) cluster structures were globally searched on their potential energy surfaces by means of the CALYPSO prediction software. Structural optimization and calculations of properties such as relative energy and electronic structure were then carried out by density functional theory for each size of low energy isomer. The structural, relative stability, natural charge population, natural electronic configuration and distribution of the strongest peaks of the infrared and Raman spectra of the low energy isomers of PbMg n − ( n = 2–12) clusters were systematically investigated in the present work. It was shown that the PbMg 7 − cluster ground state isomer exhibits the highest stability, for which special electronic excitation and chemical bonding analyses were performed. It is reasonable to believe that this work enriches the structural, spectroscopic and other data of magnesium-based clusters and provides some theoretical basis for possible future experimental syntheses.

Growth mechanism, stability and electronic structures of Sn doped Cu clusters

Abstract:Recently, the single-Sn-atom-doped Cu of Cu 20 Sn 1 is reported (ACS Catal. 2021, 11, 11103−11108), which is selective to CO with a maximum faradic efficiency. However, the structure evolutions and electronic properties of Sn doped Cu clusters are not well established. Here, the growth patterns, stability and electronic structures of SnCu n (n = 1-9) clusters are first analysed in detail. It is found that the structural transitions of them are found to occur at the SnCu 3 and SnCu 7 , respectively, where the Sn atoms trend to stabilise at the vertex sites with high-coordination numbers. Among them, the tetragonal pyramidal SnCu 4 has a higher stability than that of its neighbours and can maintain the structural integrity at 700 K. The molecular orbitals and density of states reveal that the SnCu 4 has a 1S 2 1P 6 superatomic electronic shell, which is further confirmed by the density of states analysis. The electrostatic potential surfaces confirmed that the SnCu n have significant σ-hole regions at the Cu atomic sites, except for SnCu and SnCu 2 . The charge analyses show that the direction of charge flows is from the Cu n frameworks → Sn.

A multicentre-bonded [Zn I ] 8 cluster with cubic aromaticity

Abstract:Polynuclear zinc clusters [Zn x ] ( x >2) with multicentred Zn–Zn bonds and +1 oxidation state zinc (that is, zinc(I) or Zn I ) are to our knowledge unknown in chemistry. Here we report the polyzinc compounds with an unusual cubic [Zn I 8 (HL) 4 (L) 8 ] 12− (L=tetrazole dianion) cluster core, composed of zinc(I) ions and short Zn–Zn bonds (2.2713(19) Å). The [Zn I 8 ]-bearing compounds possess surprisingly high stability in air and solution. Quantum chemical studies reveal that the eight Zn 4s 1 electrons in the [Zn I 8 ] cluster fully occupy four bonding molecular orbitals and leave four antibonding ones entirely empty, leading to an extensive electron delocalization over the cube and significant stabilization. The bonding pattern of the cube represents a class of aromatic system that we refer to as cubic aromaticity, which follows a 6 n +2 electron counting rule. Our finding extends the aromaticity concept to cubic metallic systems, and enriches Zn–Zn bonding chemistry.
Metal-metal bonds in Zintl clusters: Synthesis, structure and bonding in [Fe2Sn4Bi8]3– and [Cr2Sb12]3–

Abstract:We report here the synthesis and characterization of two new members of the M2E12 family of endohedral Zintl clusters, [Fe2Sn4Bi8]3– and [Cr2Sb12]3–, both of which contain open-shell metal dimers encapsulated inside a triple-decker cluster of main-group atoms. The 75-electron [Fe2Sn4Bi8]3– cluster has a D 4 h -symmetric structure, while [Cr2Sb12]3–, despite having the same 75-electron count, is strongly distorted to a geometry that resembles a CrSb8 crown capped by a CrSb4 unit. The structural differences between the two are driven by the increasing availability of 3d electron density in the earlier transition metal, which leads, ultimately, to different electronic configurations in the two clusters. The trends precisely mirror those observed in the ME10 and ME12 families containing a single transition metal ion.

Abstract:Calculations performed at the ab initio level using the recently reported planar concentric π-aromatic B18H6 2+(1) [Chen Q et al. (2011) Phys Chem Chem Phys 13:20620] as a building block suggest the possible existence of a new class of B3n H m polycyclic aromatic hydroboron (PAHB) clusters—B30H8(2), B39H9 2−(3), B42H10(4/5), B48H10(6), and B72H12(7)—which appear to be the inorganic analogs of the corresponding C n H m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHC) molecules naphthalene C10H8, phenalenyl anion C13H9 −, phenanthrene/anthracene C14H10, pyrene C16H10, and coronene C24H12, respectively, in a universal atomic ratio of B:C = 3:1. Detailed canonical molecular orbital (CMO), adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP), and electron localization function (ELF) analyses indicate that, as they are hydrogenated fragments of a boron snub sheet [Zope RR, Baruah T (2010) Chem Phys Lett 501:193], these PAHB clusters are aromatic in nature, and exhibit the formation of islands of both σ- and π-aromaticity. The predicted ionization potentials of PAHB neutrals and electron detachment energies of small PAHB monoanions should permit them to be characterized experimentally in the future. The results obtained in this work expand the domain of planar boron-based clusters to a region well beyond B20, and experimental syntheses of these snub B3n H m clusters through partial hydrogenation of the corresponding bare B3n may open up a new area of boron chemistry parallel to that of PAHCs in carbon chemistry.
Concentric dual π delocalisation and conflicting aromaticity in bowl-like B56 cluster: an all-boron analogue of circumbiphenyl C38H16

Abstract:We present computational evidence for concentric dual π delocalisation and conflicting aromaticity in an elongated quasi-planar bowl-like B 56 ( C 2 v , 1 A 1 ) cluster, using the canonical molecular orbital (CMO) and the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) analyses at the density functional theory (DFT) level. The first B 12 and second B 18 rings constitute an inner BDR ribbon, and the second B 18 and third B 24 rings form an outer BDR ribbon. Chemical bonding analyses indicate that the 19 delocalised π bonds can be divided into two separate π subsystems, with inner 14π and outer 24π delocalised electrons. The bonding pattern is consistent with conflicting π aromaticity, which leads to an elongated geometry. A refined bonding model is also proposed for circumbiphenyl molecule C 38 H 16 , of which the B 56 cluster is an inorganic analogue. The updated bonding pictures differ from that reported in prior studies on the system. It is further unravelled the mechanism as to why the two hexagonal holes prefer to be located at the centre. This research enriches the analogous relationship between quasi-planar boron clusters and their polycyclic hydrocarbons counterparts. The bowl-like B 56 cluster is an all-boron analogue of the circumbiphenyl D 3h C 38 H 16 , featuring concentric dual π electron delocalisation bonding pattern with 14π and 24π electrons for the inner and outer boron ribbons, respectively. The π conflicting aromaticity naturally explains why the bowl-like B 56 cluster has an elongated form. This bonding model for the two species is established herein for the first time.
