Abstract:The power rating of Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) has been increasing continuously. In the near future it will increase to MW and dozens of MW. Reliability and environmental friendliness are critical issues for this application. Aiming at the requirements of ultra-high power UPS, this paper proposes a concept of Super UPS using multiple energy sources (Grid, Gas Turbine (GT), Fuel Cell (FC), Li-ion Battery (LB) and Photovoltaic (PV)) to boost the reliability of system and improve environmental friendliness. Firstly, four typical structures for Super UPS are analyzed and the best choice of structure for ultra-high power high reliability application is given. Then, operation modes of proposed structure for Super UPS are introduced. Finally, results of reliability computation verified that the reliability of Super UPS is much higher than traditional UPS.

Abstract:A hybrid AC-DC-AC topology for Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is investigated, which is composed of a two level three-phase four-wire rectifier and a three level T-type inverter. It has distinct advantages for the applications of on line UPS. The grid side power quality can be easily satisfied with the front-end two level three-phase rectifier. Since output voltage's THD is challenge to UPS with sever nonlinear load, the T-type inverter is used to enhance the load power quality with higher conversion efficiency. The rectifier is transformed into step-up converter for the battery during the grid faults. The efficiency optimization of the proposed UPS with the hybrid AC-DC-AC topology is studied. The control strategies for the UPS are investigated. At last, the UPS prototype with 200kVA is designed and tested to validate the performance of the proposed UPS.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-energy-source uninterruptible power supply system (DES UPS) is investigated. There are two energy sources with independent infrastructures in the system, grid and natural gas pipeline. It boosts the reliability of traditional UPS. Grid is the primary energy source, while natural gas generator (NG-Gen) acts as the secondary energy source for long-time backup. Firstly, reliability and source cost of the system are evaluated. Then, cold-start characteristic of NG-Gen is analyzed and the seamless transfer strategy of DES UPS is proposed based on the cold-start characteristic of NG-Gen. It achieves the uninterruptible load power supply when system operation mode changes at the grid fault. Then the control diagram is designed accordingly and state of the system during working mode transfer is analyzed. Finally, the concept and control strategy of DES UPS are verified in a 10kW prototype.

Abstract:Multi-Functional Bidirectional AC/DC T-type 3-Level Converter for Super UPS is investigated in this paper. The AC/DC converter is used as the interfaced between DC Bus and Energy Source or Load. According to the components (grid, gas turbines, AC loads) connected in AC side, The AC/DC converter operates at AC voltage source mode, Power source mode or DC voltage source mode. A control scheme for the Multi-Functional Bidirectional AC/DC converter is studied. Finally the design of the AC/DC converter is verified by experiment on a 100kW AC/DC converter prototype.

Abstract:The dramatic loss caused by the power blackout in some industrial applications proposes the requirement for an extremely high reliability uninterruptible power supply (UPS). This paper introduces the concept of super uninterruptible power supply (Super UPS). Multiple energy sources are used to obtain a high reliability, long backup time, high surety UPS system. Classifications for energy sources, power conversion stage and power distribution bus line are established to simplify the power conversion architectures. A generic method to classify the architectures for multiple energy source system is presented. Then a system reliability evaluation method based on different architectures is used to analyze the characteristics of different types of topology. Redundant power conversion stage design to enhance the system reliability is discussed. Finally, a high reliability super UPS architecture is proposed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a neural-network control scheme for the inverters of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to improve their transient response and adaptability to various loads. Two simulation models are built to obtain example patterns for training the neural network. One is a multiple-feedback-loop controller for linear loads, and the other is an idealized load-current-feedback controller specially designed for nonlinear loads. The latter controller has a built-in reference load model, and the load current is forced to track this reference. Example patterns under various loading conditions are used in the off-line training of a selected neural network which is made as simple as possible to reduce the calculation time. When the training is completed, the neural network is used to control the UPS inverter on-line. The development of example patterns and training of the neural network are done using MATLAB and SIMULINK, and the verification of results is done using PSpice. It is found that the proposed neural-network-controlled inverter can provide good sinusoidal output voltage with low total harmonic distortion (THD) under various loading conditions, and good transient responses when the load changes

Abstract:This paper deals with the design of good quality output, voltage waveform and excellent power sharing of uninterruptible power system (UPS) inverters with parallel-connection capability. In this sense, the controller is designed by using two nested loops: 1) the inner loop is performed by using the output voltage and inductor current double loop controller, providing a good static and dynamic response of a single UPS. 2) the outer loop calculates the output active and reactive powers and adjusts the output voltage amplitude and phase during the load transients. Integrated with the power control and the output filter current control, the proposed load-sharing control can improve the current-sharing quality and stability of the paralleled UPS system. In order to eliminate the high frequency circulation current around carrier wave frequency, the triangle carrier wave synchronization is used. Experimental studies using two parallel 30 KVA UPS's are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control.

Abstract:This paper first discusses control loop characteristics for the PWM rectifier and the inverter used in an on-line UPS system. Then a unified control scheme for both the PWM rectifier and the inverter in the UPS system is investigated using single phase control in ABC frame. Based on the unified control scheme, a generic control kernel is defined. This generic control kernel is used to realize the main performance of the UPS system, such as dynamic response, low THD and synchronism. Then the generic control kernel can be further applied to both the PWM rectifier and inverter by selecting different inputs. The unified control scheme not only significantly simplifies the UPS control software development, but also improves its maintenance. Finally, this unified control scheme is verified on a 50kVA UPS system.

Abstract:At present, sudden load changes and terminal voltage fluctuations are two primary problems in the uninterrupted phase-separation passing (UPP) system. To further enhance the reliability of the UPP system and compensate for the voltage sag at the end of the traction power supply network caused by the suddenly connection of locomotive to the power grid, a multi-function uninterrupted phase-separation passing system (MUPPS) and its control strategy are proposed. It has the advantages of linear load change and improving power supply reliability. First, the topology and working principles of a MUPPS are studied; secondly, the current variation characteristics of the bridge arm when the power is continuously supplied by MUPPS during the phase-separation passing are analyzed. Then, the characteristics of a MUPPS to provide reactive power and stabilize the terminal voltage of the traction arm are analyzed. Then, the power transmission characteristics of a MUPPS under emergency working conditions are analyzed. The control strategy for the two conditions is proposed. Finally, simulation analysis and small capacity experiments are conducted. The theoretical analysis and test confirm the correctness and effectiveness of the MUPPS.

Abstract:An audio noise-free Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) back-to-back (BTB) converter is proposed. Firstly its ZVS sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) scheme is introduced. Using the proposed ZVS-SPWM scheme, all the switches in both the rectifier side and inverter side as well as the auxiliary switch can realize ZVS turn-on with only one commonly shared auxiliary circuit. Besides, the auxiliary switch only needs to operate once in each switching period, which can reduce the extra loss caused by the auxiliary circuit. The ZVS conditions with respect to both balanced and unbalanced load situations are given. A resonant parameter design guideline and a low stray inductance bus bar design is introduced. Finally the proposed UPS system with ZVS BTB converter is verified on a 50kVA experimental prototype.

Abstract:Under non-linear load with large crest factor current,the total harmonic distortion(THD)of uninterrupti-ble power supply(UPS)inverter output voltage is difficult to meet the regulation requirement. The harmonic suppression method based on dq0 synchronous rotating frame can eliminate the harmonics of specified order, thereby improving the THD of the UPS output voltage.In this paper,the structure of harmonic suppression loop was introduced, with which the harmonic suppression method was applied to a three-phase four-wire UPS inverter; the control equation for the harmonic suppression loop in dq0 synchronous rotating frame was deduced, thus the loop's dynamic model was obtained. On this basis, the structure of the harmonic suppression loop was improved to realize dq axes decoupling at low frequency, and the loop control parameters were also designed. Finally, the validity of the design of harmonic suppression loop was experimentally verified on a three-phase four-wire T-type three-level inverter platform.

Abstract:To further increase the reliability, safety of the power supply, concept of the super UPS occurs. Super UPS is composed of multiple sources such as Grid, Gas turbine, Li-ion battery and renewable energy. The Li-ion battery power conversion system need to support the DC bus quickly when emergency happens and cooperated with other two module to stabilize the load supply. In this paper, the demand of the Li-ion battery module is analyzed. Then in order to get a high charging and discharging accuracy, sampling error is analyzed the design of the Li-ion power conversion system is proposed based on the character test of the battery. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified in the 10 k W prototype.

Abstract:With the proposal of the construction of smart grid,the single electricity consuming equipment can no longer satisfy the need of the development of smart grid.＂Green＂,energy saving and grid-connected electrical equipment become the main development trend.The paper proposed a novel grid-connected uninterruptible power supply（UPS） system with the electricity feedback function and its circuit topology.The system can be split into four single-phase bridge converters,which,in turn,are grouped to formed pulse width modulation（PWM） rectifier and feeder module,isolated bidirectional DC-DC module and inverter module,so the system becomes a four-quadrant operation power supply device.On this basis,the operation modes of system were designed,and the control system was split into seven modular sub-controllers.With their combinational logic,the control strategy of each module were implemented,so the control targets of steady state and transient state in different modes were achieved.At last,simulation and experimental results verified the validity and effectiveness of the proposed circuit topology and control strategy.

Abstract:Online UPS stands the high power extreme that reaches the capacity limitation of ordinary commercial single-phase utility. The consequent high current requires special management in the power stage other than those routine low power structures, to achieve reduced loss, heat and more reliability. With overviews upon competitive schemes, the specified PFC front end is to be investigated as an outstanding configuration, possessing the least parts number and conduction dissipation. What's more, circuit optimization and cost reduction play important roles in products design once the functions are accomplished. A unified rectifier-battery discharger is proposed. This DC bus voltage supplier employs nothing extra but a few cheap components more than the conventional PF corrector. On the other hand, high switching frequency is demanded for acoustic noise elimination and weight/volume reduction. Switching aid methods in circuit topology do work on relaxation and/or transfer of electric stress and loss from the main power switches. Performance comparisons are examined over snubberless and series current choked operations respectively, especially on a full bridge inverter. Topology detail, qualitative and quantitative descriptions, parameter design, topological and simulated analysis, are presented in the R&D process for a 5 kVA UPS.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved control strategy to eliminate dc circulating current in the paralleled uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems. The active and reactive power control has good performance on restricting ac circulating current. However, it is unable to suppress dc circulating current effectively. Based on conventional active and reactive power control for load sharing in paralleled UPS systems, a dc circulating current suppression loop is introduced to each paralleled inverter module, which is used to eliminate the dc component of output voltage in each paralleled inverter module. The dc circulating current control is decoupled since each inverter module only regulates its own dc component. The proper design of multiloop controller parameters for the dc suppression loop ensures excellent steady-state and dynamic performances. The proposed dc circulating current suppression method is verified by experimental results of a paralleled three-phase UPS inverter system.

Abstract:The synchronization of the UPS output and the grid is an important indicator to measure the UPS. An UPS inverter output phase feedback control strategy was studied, which could obtain the grid phase by software phase-locked loop to become the phase reference of the inverter output phase. Then the feedback control was used so that the inverter output phase could track the reference phase precisely. Based on theoretical analysis, a compensation network of output phase feedback control was designed. The control method was verified on the three-level UPS inverter platform, the experimental results show that the inverter output is able to synchronize with the grid through this method.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel uninterruptible power supply (UPS) configuration that integrates active power filter (APF) capabilities within a single-phase matrix converter (SPMC) framework. Power disruptions, particularly affecting critical loads, can lead to substantial economic damages. Historically, conventional UPS systems utilized dual separate converters to function as a rectifier and an inverter, without incorporating any power factor correction (PFC) mechanisms. Such configurations suffered from diminished power density, compromised reliability, and spatial limitations. To address these issues, this research proposes an enhanced UPS design that incorporates APF features into the SPMC. The focus of this investigation is on the efficiency of alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) conversion and the reverse process utilizing this advanced UPS model. The SPMC is selected to supplant the rectifier and inverter units traditionally employed in UPS architectures. A novel integrated switching strategy is formulated to facilitate the operation of the UPS in either rectifier (charging) or inverter (discharging) modes, contingent upon the operational state. The performance and efficacy of the devised circuit design and switching technique are substantiated through simulations conducted in MATLAB/Simulink 2019 and empirical evaluations using a test rig. The findings demonstrate that the voltage generated is sinusoidal and synchronized with the supply current, thereby minimizing the total harmonic distortion (THD) and enhancing both the power factor and the transition efficiency of the UPS system between its charging and discharging states.
