Abstract:The dilemma of face(mianzi)has long been recognized as one of the major dynamics in the Chinese society around which interpersonal relationship revolves.As a crucial cultural element,it somehow determines the way people behave.Because of the complexity and ambiguity of the concept,investigation relating to face lags far behind,and empirical evidences are scarce.By means of field research and statistical analyses,this article concentrates on the dimensional structure of face need and its quantitative measurement.We suggest that:(1)face and face need are both multidimensional concepts;individual face-need can be divided into three types:ability-based,relationship-based and moral-based;according to its origin,face consists of at least three parts,namely ability,interpersonal relationship and morality;(2)individual need for face is different from person to person,not only in the respect of intension,but also in classification.
