Abstract:The developments on liquid desiccant air-conditioning systems were illustrated and summarized in this paper. In order to obtain a better dehumidification (or humidification) performance, liquid desiccant should be cooled (or heated) rather than air. Two fundamental modules were proposed, including basic spray module with extra heat exchanger and total heat recovery device, which could be combined to set up various kinds of liquid desiccant air processors. The operating principle of heat pump-driven outdoor air processor as well as heat-driven outdoor air processor was analyzed. The COP air of the heat pump (or power)-driven outdoor air processor could be as high as 5.0 both in summer and in winter operating conditions. The COP air of the hot water-driven processor (65°C–80°C) was 1.19 and 0.93, respectively, using evaporative indoor exhaust air or cooling water to cool the dehumidification process. The liquid desiccant air processor-based temperature and humidity-independent control air-conditioning system could save 20%–30% operating energy compared with the conventional air-conditioning system.
Analysis of a Hybrid System of Adiabatic Absorption two-stage Liquid Desiccant and CO2 Transcritical Cycles

Abstract:A novel hybrid system of adiabatic absorption two-stage liquid desiccant and CO2 transcritical cycles is proposed,where LiCl solutions are used as desiccants. Dissipated heat of the transcritical cycle is used to regenerate LiCl solutions, and the heat could be utilized efficiently with large temperature decrease. From insight of thermodynamics, model of the hybrid system is built. Based on the calculation results, temperatures of the utilized heat could range from 120℃ to 50℃. In addition, temperature and humidity independence control could be conducted by the hybrid system and its evaporation temperatures could be obviously lifted. From the analysis, the dehumidification rate of the first dehumidifier increases when the moisture contents of ambient air increases. COP of the two-stage liquid desiccant cycle could be lifted when the temperature of LiCl solutions decreases and the concentration of LiCl solutions increases at the inlet of first dehumidifier. Available dissipated heat and evaporation temperature are closely related of the hybrid system. There is a critical evaporation temperature that makes the available dissipated heat to fully meet the need for regeneration of the hybrid system. Comparing with cooling dehumidification by a conventional CO2 transcritical cycle, under the same dehumidification capacity, COP of the transcritical cycle could be improved by 5.6％ and compression work could be decreased by 29％.

Abstract:Liquid desiccant air conditioning system presented in this paper realizes independent humidity control, avoids energy loss in the freezing dehumidification process and has a higher efficiency than any other desiccant cooling systems. It can be driven by low-grade heat source (90 degreesC - 60 degreesC) with high energy efficiency, and it seems to be no satisfied methods for other existing technologies to use such low temperature heat source. The equipment can realize optimized heat and mass transfer process. Simulation results show that this system has good performance. This new system can be applied in CHP systems, and it's an effective mode to optimize urban energy supply system.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>The vapor compression air conditioning (VCAC) is the most widely used method for space cooling. However, it has some disadvantages, such as the fact that it consumes more electricity, depletes the ozone layer, and contributes to global warming. The liquid desiccant system using an evaporative cooler is a better replacement for a VCAC because it is cost‐effective and environmentally sustainable. This paper initially introduces the fundamental principles of desiccant cooling and different types of liquid desiccant systems. Then, the desiccant systems using evaporative coolers are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the assessment of system performances by different researcher's works is evaluated. Abstract:Energy-efficient air dehumidification process plays an important role in achieving energy conservation of air-conditioning systems in buildings. Internally cooled design for liquid desiccant air dehumidification system is regarded as promising to achieve energy-efficient air dehumidification. Different from the conventional adiabatic liquid desiccant dehumidifier, the cooling medium is installed inside the internally cooled dehumidifier (ICD) to provide cooling to the heat and mass transfer interface between desiccant and air. Thus, the increase of solution temperature and vapor partial pressure during the moisture absorption process can be decelerated, contributing to achieving better dehumidification performance. This paper aims to overview current research on the ICD design, including the materials of the desiccant and device, component design and system configuration, as well as the dehumidification performance assessment at the component level and energy performance evaluation at the system level. Moreover, chief limitations of current internally cooled liquid desiccant air dehumidification systems for real engineering application are then discussed and illustrated. This review helps comprehensively understand the development and research status of the ICD technique, and provides reference for widely applying the design to real engineering applications.

Abstract:The escalating demand for energy-efficient and eco-friendly air conditioning systems in buildings has spurred the development of comfortable, efficient, and cost-effective air handling system configurations. Desiccant cooling has shown a higher coefficient of performance (COP) compared to traditional vapor compression refrigeration (MVCR) systems. However, current desiccant cooling facilities struggle to decouple and efficiently handle indoor heat and moisture loads. The complexity of these facilities has kept intricate cooling systems remaining theoretical, requiring simplification and experimental investigation. This paper presents an experimental study on a compact, two-stage evaporative cooling system assisted by a liquid desiccant. A key innovation of this system is the inclusion of a two-stage heat exchanger that adeptly manages the decoupling of indoor heat and moisture loads under challenging high-temperature and high-humidity conditions. Performance analysis was conducted experimentally under three hot and humid climatic conditions using an optimized operating parameter scheme. Starting from an initial condition of 36.22 degrees C and a humidity ratio of 0.028 kg/kg, the proposed system achieves COP values ranging from 11.3 to 18.4 without compromising indoor comfort or facility compactness. Under high heat and high humidity conditions, the optimized system extracts 20 % of the product air as the secondary air source. It can reach a minimum supply air temperature of 18.44 degrees C, achieved under optimized conditions of low wind speed (1.0 m/s), high desiccant concentration (35 %), and substantial desiccant flow (0.09 kg/s). Experimental studies of this new system provide the possibility of achieving high efficiency in air handling over a wide range of temperatures and humidity.

Abstract:Evaporative cooling technology (ECT) has been deemed as an alternative to the conventional vapor-compression air conditioning system for dry climates in recent years due to its simple structure and low operating cost. Generally speaking, the ECT includes two types of different technologies, direct evaporative cooling (DEC) and indirect evaporative cooling (IEC). Both technologies can theoretically reduce the air temperature to the wet-bulb temperature of outdoor air. The major difference between these two technologies is that DEC will introduce extra moisture to the supply air while IEC will not. The enhanced IEC, Maisotsenko-cycle (M-cyle) IEC, can even bring down the air temperature to the dew point temperature. The ECT integrated with solid desiccant systems, i.e., solid desiccant-assisted evaporative cooling technologies (SDECT), could make the technology applicable to a wider range of weather conditions, e.g., weather with high humidity. In this paper, the recent development of various evaporative cooling technologies (ECT), solid desiccant material and the integration of these two technologies, the SDECT, were thoroughly reviewed with respect to their configuration, optimization and desiccant unit improvement. Furthermore, modeling techniques for simulating SDECT with their pros and cons were also reviewed. Potential opportunities and research recommendations were indicated, which include improving the structure and material of M-cycle IEC, developing novel desiccant material and optimizing configuration, water consumption rate and operation strategy of SDECT system. This review paper indicated that the SDECT system could be a potential replacement for the conventional vapor-compressed cooling system and could be applied in hot and humid environments with proper arrangements.

Abstract:A new evaporative air-conditioning refrigeration system using two-step liquid desiccant was presented.It could operate whole year and recover the heat or cooling energy from indoor exhaust air.Compared with the similar one-step dehumidifying system,it has higher operation efficiency.The result from computation and analysis indicates :Evaporator is the main influence factor.For improving the coefficient of performance of the whole system,evaporator,evaporative condenser and evaporative fluid cooler should be devised and matched by winter operating mode.When the entrance solution concentration of dehumidifier,the flux proportion between dehumidifiers,and the flux proportion of outside circulates respectively is 30%,0.25 and 0.15,the coefficient of performance is optimum.Under air conditioning,outdoor computation parameters in Xi'an,the coefficient of performance of the whole system is 0.791 and the entrance solution temperature of regenerater is 48.5 ℃.

Abstract:Air-conditioning industry is facing important environmental and regulatory challenges, such as the phaseout of CFCs refrigerants, the requirement of higher ventilation rates and improved air quality by new design standards. The result is the development of technology to supplement or even replace traditional vapor compression cycles. Evaporative cooling systems are environment-friendly and however are usually restrained to climates with low average levels of relative humidity. However, the development of both liquid and solid desiccant systems has significantly widened the range of application of such cycles. Accordingly, the present work aims at describing the fundamentals of desiccant systems, as well as a variety of arrangements for solid desiccant-assisted evaporative cooling cycles and its applications. In addition, the use of solid desiccants to assist vapor compression systems in the handling of the latent component of the thermal load is also discussed.

Abstract:Heat recovery liquid desiccant evaporative cooling air-conditioning system was presented.It can run the whole year,and has a significant reduction in the cooling water consumption with the help of evaporative cooling technology and a direct mixing heat exchanger.Indoor air exhaust heat can be recovered and utilized.Compared with similar systems,it has higher operating efficiency.Through the calculation and analysis,the results showed that the evaporative cooler is the main factor of winter heat recovery.To further enhance the overall performance of the system,the evaporator,evaporative condenser and evaporative cooler should be designed and match in the winter condition.In the winter and summer air-conditioning outdoor design condition of Xi'an,the system's performance coefficient of TCOP,COP and COP_hare 0.925,0.6516 and 4.17,respectively.

Abstract:Abstract The present paper deals with the experimental study of the liquid desiccant air conditioning system using the single storage solution tank. The novelty of the system is that the dehumidification and regeneration are carried out in a single compact unit. The regeneration of solution is done using the marquise-shaped solar collector. The liquid desiccant solution used here is calcium chloride and water. The moisture removal rate (MRR), moisture, and enthalpy effectiveness are used as the performance parameters. The effects of mass flowrate of solution, solution temperature, inlet air temperature, and relative humidity (RH) on the performance are investigated. The experimental outcome shows that when the solution flowrate is increased from 0.263 to 0.437 kg/s, the MRR is improved from 5.08 to 7.82 g/kg and when the RH is increased from 70% to 92%, the MRR is enhanced from 5.56 to 12.45 g/kg. The new correlation for moisture effectiveness is developed based on the experimental values and depending parameters, and also another correlation is developed based on Chung’s correlation (Chung, T.-W., 1994, “Predictions of Moisture Removal Efficiencies for Packed-Bed Dehumidification Systems,” Gas Sep. Purif., 8(4), pp. 265–268).

Abstract:Potential option to replace the traditionally used vapor compression system with desiccant based dehumidification and cooling to overcome the problems in VCR use like as substantial consumption of high grade electrical energy and to eliminate the use of the CFC based refrigerants which are responsible for the depletion of ozone layer. The desiccant cooling can be proved to be an efficient in highly moist atmosphere to handles the latent cooling load of the conditioned space. The present overview explains about the detailed ideas for making use of various chemicals as the desiccant solution for their optimum cost and characteristics. The desiccant cooling can handle both humidity and temperature separately and effectively to produce necessary thermal comfort within the conditioned space. The desiccant cooling can find optimum use of renewable solar energy in air conditioning by applying them for desiccant regeneration to lower the consumption of electricity which produced mostly by fossil fuel based power plants which leads to problem of pollution subsequently. The present review provides the direction for effective use of the desiccant based cooling for separable control over temperature and humidity in case of both residential and industrial use to ameliorate the dual - energy and cost saving.

Abstract:Air-conditioning systems in hot and humid regions account for over 50% of total energy usage. Integrating an indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) and a liquid desiccant dehumidifier (LDD) as the liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) presents an energy-saving and emission-reducing solution to replace traditional mechanical vapor compression refrigeration (MVCR) systems. This integration overcomes the regional limitations of IEC in hot and humid areas. The newly developed LDCS uses exhaust air as the working air source and solar energy as the heat source for desiccant solution regeneration. This study aims to develop an empirical model for the outlet parameters of the LDCS , propose an optimization strategy for its operating parameters, and assess the potential and energy performance through parameter analysis and multifactor optimization. By conducting sensitivity analysis and optimizing six critical parameters based on a response surface model (RSM), the system outlet temperature, relative humidity, and coefficient of performance (COP) are improved as the optimization objectives. The regional capability is demonstrated in three selected hot and humid cities. The results indicate that the LDCS can significantly increase the COP by 57.3%. Additionally, it can meet the dehumidification demand when operating with 25% of the air extracted in the RIEC during months with high humidity and temperature. This study will facilitate the application of IEC and LDD technologies, guide the design and operation scheme of the system, and promote energy-saving and emission-reducing solutions in hot and humid regions.

Abstract:Applying an internally cooled liquid desiccant air conditioning system (LDAC) is a promising energy-saving and emission-reduction scheme for hot and humid areas. This research investigates the application of an internally cooled LDAC for performance enhancement in hot and humid areas like Hong Kong. The combined system integrates liquid desiccant dehumidification (LDD) and regenerative indirect evaporative cooling (RIEC) without a power-intensive compressor. The internally cooled LDD removes latent heat from the hot and humid air before the RIEC cools it. To ensure efficient energy utilization, the LDD captures the exhaust air to assist in the dehumidification and initial cooling of the fresh air, which alleviates the efficiency deterioration of the desiccant. An all-fresh air system is used for better indoor air quality. To optimize the performance of a system with many influencing parameters, the response surface method ( RSM ) and multi-objective optimization are used to optimize and assess the potential and performance of the system. The system cooling capacity ( C ), latent heat removal rate ( Qd ), and dehumidification efficiency ( ηd ) are used as the optimization objectives. The response surface model and desirability function approach optimize six critical parameters, achieving a 7.6% improvement in dehumidification performance with low airspeed (1.5 m/s) and high desiccant concentration (40%) during high-humidity months. Increasing the extraction ratio of the RIEC by 20% in warmer months enhances the peak cooling capacity by 23.6%. This research contributes to implementing internally cooled LDAC systems and provides insights into optimizing monthly operation patterns in hot and humid regions.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on the dehumidification performance of a counter flow liquid desiccant dehumidifier using structured packing with a high specific surface area (650 m(2) m(-3)). New empirical equations correlating the moisture effectiveness and the enthalpy effectiveness with critical inlet parameters are developed, which can be used to conveniently predict the performance of a similar dehumidifier. The empirical correlations are validated using the experimental data of this study, and compared with the experimental data reported by another researcher. The deviations are within +/- 10% for the former and within +/- 15% for the latter. The performance of the present type of packing is also compared with other two types of structured packing available in literature. The influences of the inlet conditions of the air and the desiccant as well as the packing height on the dehumidification performance are also investigated and compared with the results reported in previous studies. Design And Study Of A Novel System For Solid Desiccant Dehumidification

Abstract:Solid adsorption desiccant system has been paid more and more attentions nowadays, not only because it is friendly to the environment, but also because it can utilize low grade energy sources such as solar energy, geothermal energy or waste heat. How to improve the performance of heat and mass transfer is a key factor for the application of this kind of system.In this paper, a novel dehumidification device was designed and an experimental investigation on the adsorption and desorption operations were studied. Aluminum clad copper tube with external longitudinal fins were assembled into adsorption bed, which were covered by silica gel granules as desiccant. 13 degrees C cold water was used for refrigerating and improving adsorption effect, while 65 degrees C hot water was used as the heat source for silica gel regeneration.The experimental and calculation results show that the novel system can work effectively driven by low temperature source and the coefficient of performance (COP) is high.

Abstract:The liquid desiccant air conditioning system is drawing more and more attention due to its advantages in energy saving and environmental friendliness. The dehumidifier is one of the essential parts of the system, which affects the whole system performance severely. This paper experimentally studies the performance of the cross flow dehumidifier, which has been less studied than the counter flow dehumidifier, although it is more applicable in practice. Celdek structured packings were used in the dehumidifier, and a LiBr aqueous solution was used as the liquid desiccant. The moisture removal rate and dehumidifier effectiveness were adopted as the dehumidifier performance indices. The effects of the dehumidifier inlet parameters, including air and desiccant flow rates, air inlet temperature and humidity ratio and desiccant inlet temperature and concentration, on the two indices were investigated. Correlations are proposed to predict the cross flow dehumidifier performance, which give results in good agreement with the present experimental findings.
On the Importance of the Heat and Mass Transfer Driving Force Reversal and Heat-Cold Offset in Internally-Cooled Liquid-Desiccant System

Abstract:The internally-cooled liquid-desiccant (ICLD) air-conditioning system has gained more attention, owing to its energy-efficient performance. In this study, two restriction factors of the conventional heat-pump driven ICLD system are revealed: (i) heat and mass transfer driving force reversal phenomena exist in the dehumidifier (DEH) and regenerator (REG), which deteriorate the moisture efficiencies of the DEH and REG; (ii) considerable heat-cold offset occurs during solution exchanging between the DEH and REG. To avoid the driving force reversal phenomena, the system I with a pre-cooler/heater before the DEH/REG is proposed. The COPsys of the system I is 8.2%–15.0% greater than that of the conventional ICLD system, under variable conditions. To reduce the heat-cold offset to further improve the system performance, the system II is then proposed. In the proposed system II, 20% of the original DEH/REG is changed from the original internally-cooled type into the adiabatic type. The hybrid DEH and REG help to reduce the temperature difference between the outlet solutions of the DEH and REG, and thus, the heat-cold offset in the system is reduced. Consequently, COPsys of the proposed system II is 11.0%–19.5% greater than that of the conventional system, under variable conditions.

Abstract:The increasing energy demand for air-conditioning systems has prompted a need to find an energy-efficient alternative to conventional vapor compression cooling systems. Dew point evaporative cooling (DPEC) is an advanced configuration of indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) technology, which has been regarded as a game changer. This vision paper presents recent progress, prevailing challenges, and prospective directions for the advancement of this technology. After a general introduction and a brief overview of the current knowledge, open issues are discussed in five aspects: i) optimizing channel configuration; ii) improving the precision of numerical modelling; iii) developing advanced wetting materials with superior thermal transfer properties; iv) enhancing energy efficiency; v) minimising the physical footprint and energy consumption of the hybrid systems. In each aspect, a brief description of the existing knowledge and the current research status is provided while remarking on their importance in applications. Subsequently, key challenges are highlighted, and promising avenues for future research are delineated. The identified challenges include trade-offs between thermal and economic performance in the structure optimisation, advanced model development, durability and service to new wicking materials, energy efficiency in the water reduction and intermittent water spray technique, and physical footprint and energy consumption of hybrid systems.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of a Novel Hybrid Deep-Dehumidification System Using Liquid Desiccant

Abstract:Desiccant-based hybrid air-conditioning systems have recently become popular owing to a reduction in their energy consumption. In addition to the dehumidification process, regeneration is a necessary process in a hybrid system, and in all previous studies the regenerator (REG) has been separated from the liquid desiccant dehumidifier (DEH), which implies the need for a complex duct configuration and a large equipment space. In the present study, a novel hybrid liquid desiccant-heat pump air-conditioning system combined with a cooling coil is proposed for deep dehumidification with a supply air humidity ratio of below 5 g/kg, where the REG, condensing DEH (cooling coil), and liquid desiccant DEH are cascaded. This system not only maintains the energy performance advantages of hybrid systems over conventional systems, it also simplifies the layout of the entire system and guarantees a compact system structure, particularly for buildings with an existing central air-conditioning-chilled-water system. Using the proposed system, a coefficient of system performance (COPsys) of 2.4-3.2 has been obtained experimentally with an supply air humidity ratio of 2.1-4.5 g/kg. Despite the compact system structure, when the air is processed from 30 degrees C and 20 g/kg to 4 degrees C and 3.6 g/kg, the proposed system achieves a superior COPsys, of 3.3 with an improvement of 13.8% when compared with a conventional liquid desiccant dehumidification system.
