Abstract:<p>Anticorrosion behavior of three kinds of organic coatings applied in the field of marine engineering were investigated under simulated Arctic offshore environment. The simulated aging test conditions mainly covered ultraviolet (UV) radiation, salt spray and temperature shocks (between 60 and -40°C). The performance investigations of coatings during the simulated aging test involved electrochemical impedance test, FT-IR test, surface characterization (chromatic aberration, gloss loss, SEM and CLSM) and adhesion measurements. The electrochemical impedance spectra of all coatings changed after the simulated aging test, which indicated the degradation of anticorrosion performance. All coatings demonstrated faster degradation and failure rate under UV-salt spray-low temperature environment than under single low temperature or UV environment. Such as, the impedance modulus (|Z|0.01Hz) in low frequency of PU-L coating decreases to 106 Ω•cm-2 after 18 days of simulated Arctic offshore experiment. But the |Z|0.01Hz value decreases to 108 Ω•cm-2 after 33 days of UV experiment. The synergistic effect of each environmental factor accelerated failing progress of anti-corrosion coatings. UV changed the surface chemical structure, leading to many micro defects such as holes and cracks on the coating surface. And then the penetration of corrosive medium into coating can be accelerated through those defects. After that, corrosive medium was frozen under low temperature, which would cause volume change and form more defects. The results may provide certain reference significance for choosing the appropriate anti-corrosion coatings used in polar environment.</p>
