Abstract:A series of PBA core PMMA shell particles as tougher were prepared using conventional emulsion polymerization, less emulsifier emulsion polymerization and free emulsion polymerization. It is found that the vinyl groups content of PBA rubbery core increases with the amount of cross linking agents increased and core shell ratio(mass) has great effect on the morphology of complex particles. The carboxyl quantities on the surface of core shell particles were determined by potentiometric titration. Results show that methylacrylic acid, which is loaded, is distributed on the surface of particles. The morphology of latex is determined by transmission electron microscope. The size and its distribution of latex particles were measured by LS counters particle size instrument.

Abstract:Three methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) core-shell particles with different structures, namely, “salami,” “core-shell,” and “multi-layer,” were synthesized in this work. All the MBS particles were designed with the same defined chemical composition, which is a prerequisite for producing transparent blends with poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC). This work focused on the influence of the internal structure of core-shell particles on the properties of the PVC/MBS blends. Results of the dynamic mechanical analysis illustrated that the different internal structures greatly affected the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the rubbery phase and the storage modulus of the core-shell particles. The test results on the mechanical properties showed that the PVC/MBS blend with the “multi-layer” modifier had the highest tensile stress and fracture strain values, the lowest brittle-ductile transition (BDT) temperature, and the highest impact strength at a higher temperature. With the different structure, both cavitation and debonding from the matrix were observed, which relieve the triaxial tension and promote the shear yielding of the PVC matrix. The optical property showed that the PVC/MBS blend with the “core-shell” modifier had a higher transparency than the other blends.

Abstract:A novel coating technique by solventing-out crystallization was applied to prepare the submicron PC/BaSO_4 core-shell structure composite particles using the PC as continuous phase and BaSO_4 as dispersible phase.The submicron PC/BaSO_4 composite particles prepared were character- ized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM),energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS),X-ray scan diffraction (XRD),fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and laser diffraction-based particle size.The analysis results showed that the composite paricles obtained are spherical particles with mean sizes of 300-650 nm.The experiment results indicated that the composite particles were with uniform morphology and particle size distribution,and PC covered BaSO_4 particles successfully by the method of solventing-out process.

Abstract:To improve the mechanical properties and structure of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/nano-CaCO3 nanocomposite, a core (nano-CaCO3)/shell (SR) structured filler (40-60 nm) was successfully prepared by refluxing methyl vinyl silicone rubber (SR) and nano-CaCO3 particles (coupling agent KH550, KH560, or NDZ-101 as interfacial modifier) in toluene with vigorous stirring, according to an encapsulation model. It is effective in rigid PVC composite's toughness and reinforcement. The interfacial modifier's structure and interaction of nanocomposites of PVC/SR/nano-CaCO3 were studied. The results indicate that KH560 has the optimal interfacial modificatory effect. The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) study testified that PVC/SR/nanoCaCO(3) nanocomposites had a typical rubber-plastics-toughening mechanism. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The works in toughening and strengthening of polypropylene via inorganic rigid particles were reviewed. The effect of morphology of the filling system, the particle size and distribution, and modifier on the toughening were summarized. It was extensively reported that excellent toughening resulted from a core-shell structure generated by encapsulating rigid particles with elastomer. Sophisticated analysis of PP toughening was discussed,including the criterion of critical matrix ligament thickness, the criterion of interface adhesion, finite element analysis, the transition from debonding to the cavitation/crazing and the cavitation/shear yielding. The hybrid toughening using elastomer and rigid inorganic particles was also mentioned.

Abstract:Impact modifier particles with the core-shell structure in the polypropylene (PP) matrix were successfully prepared in situ by melt blending PP, thermoplastic starch acetate (TPAS) and poly(ethylene octane) grafted with maleic anhydride (POE-MA). It was found that the core was formed by TPAS, while the shell was formed by POE-MA. This core-shell particle plays an important role in toughening PP. The notched impact strength of PP/TPAS/POE-MA blend was as high as 68.1 KJ/m2 with an anticipated cost effectiveness. The mechanism of formation of the core-shell starch-based particles could be ascribed to the reactive compatibilization between TPAS and POE-MA which could be confirmed by SEM, and which dramatically improved the mechanical properties of the composites. This provides a new idea for the toughening modification of nonpolar PP, which could widely extend the application of starch and lower the cost.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resin was filled with unm odified nano-CaCO 3 and nano-CaCO 3 coated with poly(methyl methacrylate) ( PMMA), whose fusion and mechanical properties were investigated. It found that t he equilibrium torque and melt temperature of PVC increased as the fillers intro duced. PVC filled with coated nano-CaCO 3 possessed greater impact and tensile strengths than those with unmodified nano-CaCO 3, with the impact strength of PVC with coated nano-CaCO 3 being 1.94 times higher. SEM micrographs of impac t samples showed that nano-CaCO 3 particles dispersed more homogeneously in PV C matrix without bigger aggregates when coated with PMMA.
Surface Modification of Shell Waste and Its Application in Polypropylene Composites

Abstract:The waste clam shell was modified by furfural and then introduced as a filler to reinforce polypropylene (PP). The mechanical and crystallization properties of PP composites were investigated as well. The results show that the particle size of modified clam shell powder decreases compared with that of raw clam shell powder and it can significantly improve the interfacial compatibility between filler and PP matrix. The tensile strength of PP composites decreases and elongation increases with increasing the filling content. When the filling content is 7%, the elongation of PP composites is 140%higher than pure PP material. Compared with unmodified clam shell powder, the crystallinity and tensile strength of PP/modified powder composites decreases slowly with increasing filling content. Polarizing microscope observation shows that the typical cross pattern of light extinction for PP becomes more and more unobvious with increasing filling content, and the number ofα-spherulites decreases. Therefore, the modified powder can promote the heterogeneous nucleation of PP.

Abstract:The method to prepare rigid core(talc powder)-soft shell(LDPE with low melt point and high melt flow rate) structure particles was studied.The core-shell structure particles were blended with recycled PP.The effects of the core-shell structure particles on the mechanical property,processing fluidity and heat resisting property were studied.The results show that when the content of core-shell structure particles is 30 phr,the notched impact strength,tensile strength,flexural strength,and flexural modulus of the composites are 16.1 J/m,28.79 MPa,39.01 MPa,and 1 535 MPa respectively;the fluidity of core(talc powder)-shell(LDPE) structure particles/recycled PP composite is excellent,which is suitable for industrial production.

Abstract:The PVC/organic montmorillonite composite were filled and modified by nano-calcium carbonate(nano-CaCO_3).The structure of the composites was characterised by X-ray diffraction and tansmission electron microscope.Their fracture toughness was studied by the basic fracture work method.The results showed that nano-CaCO_3 and organic montmorillonite dispersed in PVC matrix in nanometer size,and synergisticly toughened PVC.

Abstract:Chlorinated polypropylene (CPP) as rigid organic particles and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) as elastomer were used to modify the properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) by melt blending. Both mechanical and rheological properties of the PVC blends were investigated. The submicroscopic morphology of the blends was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results demonstrate that when the weight ratio of CPE to CPP is about 6: 1, a sample with the best impact strength and without obvious decline in tensile strength can be obtained. The impact strength correlates well with SEM morphologies, and TEM micrographs in the necking of the tensile specimen indicate that a cold-drawing deformation of rigid particles happens as reported by T. Kurauchi and T. Ohta (J Mater Sci 1984, 19, 1699). Therefore, a conclusion can be drawn that CPP particles acting similar to elastic particles can toughen PVC, and the cold-drawing deformation is the primary reason for toughening the PVC blends. In addition, the addition of CPP can promote the processibility of PVC ternary blends. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:With PBA as the internal core,PMMA,PVC,PMMA/PVC as shell,ACR and PVC modified ACR were synthesized through seeded emulsion polymerization.TEM photographs clearly showed that neat ACR latex particles exhibited two layers core-shell structure,and after coated by PVC exhibited loose out layer.The phase structure,impact property,and fracture surface of different ACR and PVC blends were studied.It was found that when part or all of the PMMA in the shell were replaced by PVC,the ACR still dispersed well,the modified ACR still showed THE toughening efficiency.The broken surface of ACR modified PVC species exhibited a typical ductile fracture morphology.

Abstract:The preparation of ACR/nanometer SiO_2 composite particles by microemulsion polymerization and their toughening effect on PVC were studied.After the nanometer SiO_2 particles dispersed in acrylate monomers were coupling modified,the encapsulating rate and grafting rate of ACR onto nanometer particles increased,and the nanometer SiO_2 particles well dispersed in PVC matrix after blending the composite particles with PVC.The toughening effect of composite particles on PVC was much better than that of nanometer SiO_2 particles and that of unmodified ACR copolymer.The impact strength of PVC was significantly improved when a smaller amount of composite particles were added.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) block copolymer is interesting because it is compatible with many polymers. A series of poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PMMA-b-PnBA) diblock copolymers with various compositions was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization with the amphiphilic oligo(methacrylic acid(41)-b-methyl methacrylate(8)) RAFT agent as both the polymerization mediator and surfactant. The molecular weights of the block copolymers agreed well with the theoretical prediction, although the polydispersity indices were relatively broad. The resulting core [poly(n-butyl acrylate)]-shell (PMMA) particles of PMMA-b-PnBA were found to be very effective impact modifiers for polycarbonate (PC). The diblock copolymer was well dispersed in 100-300-nm particles in the PC matrix, and the dispersed particle size was highly dependent on the block copolymer compositions. PMMA(250)-b-PnBA(550) (the subscripted number signifies the designed degree of polymerization), which was dispersed into 100-nm particles, presented the best capability for improving the impacting properties. Compared with the neat PC, the notched impact strength of PC toughened by 5 wt % PMMA(250)-b-PnBA(550) was increased by four times to 62.81 kJ/m(2) with the same yield strength, a slightly decreased modulus, an increased elongation at break, and an increased tensile strength. Preparation of PP toughening masterbatch with core-shell structure

Abstract:A kind of polypropylene (PP) toughening masterbatch was developed with taking graft of maleic anhydride as modifier. The micro-structure, crystallinity and rheology of the masterbatch were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results reveal that the toughening masterbatch possesses typical core-shell structure. In the case of adding 10% of the toughening masterbatch, the impact strength of the propylene homopolymer can be increased by 1 fold compared with its counterpart containing the same quantity of the traditional toughening modifier. In addition, the bending modulus of the propylene homopolymer is raised by 20%.

Abstract:The organic-inorganic complex nano-particles with core-shell structure were synthesized by in situ emulsion polymerization based on fresh slush pulp of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoparticles and acrylate polymer in this paper. The dispersion and encapsulation of nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride)(UPVC) was modified by organic-inorganic complex nanoparticles and the effects of toughening and reinforcing were systematically studied. The results showed that the effects of the reinforcement and toughening of organic-inorganic complex nanoparticles on UPVC were very significant. Especially, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) analysis results indicated that large-fiber drawing and network morphologies coexisted in the system of UPVC by joint modification of nanoparticles with CPE.
Preparation of Acrylic Core/Shell Polymer and Its Application in Toughening Rigid PVC Matrix

Abstract:Poly(n-butyl acrylate)/poly(methyl methacrylate) core/shell polymer(ACR) was prepared by semi-continuous emulsion polymerization.The instantaneous conversion is higher than 85% and overall conversion is over 95%.Comparison of theoretically calculated particle diameters with those measured experimentally show that the particles have grown without significant secondary nucleation occurring.The TEM analysis verified the morphology and the particle size.When it was used to modify PVC matrix,the PVC/ACR blend occurres brittle-ductile transition with the addition of 3 phr ACR.The Charpy impact strength reaches 16.51 kJ/m2, while the tensile keeps a relative high value(61.37 MPa).The SEM observation was used to explain the toughening mechanism.The ACR modifier is dispersed homogeneously in the PVC matrix,and the fractured surfaces show the networked structure and ductile deformation.The particle with approximately 180 nm of rubber-phase yields the effective impact absorption while minimizing the loss of tensile properties.This result will be used in the industrial scale in the nearest future.
Design of Phase-containing Particles with Core-shell Morphology and Their Toughening Condition on POM Resin

Abstract:For POM/TPU/CaCO3 composite system, the phase-containing particles with CaCO3 as the core and TPU as the shell were achieved automatically by means of inducing TPU to coat CaCO3, and the particles could increase the toughness of POM resin effectively. The processing procedure is very simple and the mechanical properties of the composite material are comparable with POM/TPU alloy. More importantly, it was firstly demonstrated that using rigid inorganic particles with elastic shell to toughen polymer matrix, the brittle-ductile transition rule depended not only on interparticle distance, but also on shell thickness of the toughening particles. For POM resin, the composite system could not arrive B-D transition until at a critical interparticle distance Tc(Tc≤0.18 μm) and at a critical shell thickness Lc(Lc≥0.7 μm). Once meeting the critical condition, the notch impact strength of the material was ten times greater than that of POM resin, and the tensile strength could reach around 30 MPa.

Abstract:Itremains a formidable challenge to explore novel syntheticapproachesand realize a high performance for conventional plastics, especiallyfor poly(vinyl chloride). Herein, we synthesize cross-linked poly(vinylchloride) (CL-PVC) microspheres via self-stabilizedprecipitation (2SP) polymerization by using diallyl maleate (DAM)as a cross-linking agent. The effects of solvent composition, DAMconcentration, stirring rate, monomer and initiator concentration,and monomer feeding modes on the particle size, gel content (GC),and morphology of the resultant CL-PVC microspheres are evaluatedthoroughly. The mixture solvent of n-hexane and ethanolis suitable for conducting the 2SP polymerization of CL-PVC. Monodispersemicrospheres have a linear increase in diameter from 405 to 648 nmwith the DAM increasing from 0.25 to 16%. The GC values are highlyreliant on both the amount of DAM and its feeding modes. Subsequently,the CL-PVC and dioctyl phthalate-extended CL-PVC (DECL-PVC) microspheresare utilized as functional polymeric fillers in a rigid PVC resin.It is encouraging that both mechanical and impact strengths are enhancedconcurrently. When 5 phr DECL-PVC (GC = 30.08%) and DECL-PVC (GC =76.23%) are added to the rigid PVC resin, the tensile strengths thereofcan reach 73 and 78 MPa, respectively, which are much higher thanthat of the contrast (& SIM;54 MPa). Meanwhile, the highest impactstrength can reach 4.36 kJ/m(2) by using 5 phr DECL-PVC (GC= 30.08%) as a toughening modifier, which increased by 53.0% thanthat of CL-PVC (2.85 kJ/m(2)) at a similar loading contentand 209.2% than that of pure PVC (1.41 kJ/m(2)). This workoffers a novel strategy for the synthesis of the CL-PVC microsphereand opens a new scope for its further use.
