Abstract:Absract: The development of ecological recycling agriculture is an effective way to adjust the structure of agricultural indus-try, break the bottleneck of resources and environment, and transform the mode of agricultural development. The foundation, development status and problems of ecological circular agriculture in Chongqing is analyzed. Abstract:Analysis using method of new institutional economics indicated that tobacco farmers' cooperatives were developed on the basis of institution innovation.However,in balancing the institutional and difficulties of exceeding or demand exceeding supply exist,which means that tobacco farmers' cooperatives were facing double institutional difficulties,i.e.,the so called industry's zeal meet with tobacco farmers lack of interest.Suggestions for future policy were proposed in order to promote the development of tobacco farmers' cooperatives.

Abstract:Technological innovation has become a major source of farmer co-operatives’ competitive advantage, however empirical research on co-operatives innovation in a developing country context is rare. We adopt an ethnographic case study method collecting data from 32 co-operatives managers of four exemplar co-operative cases and agricultural experts in China and collected much archival data. In addition, a Delphi study was conducted to collect data on the innovation performance. Based on the distinctive characteristics of co-operatives, we found that first knowledge spillovers and technology acquisition modes are two constructs which best capture the dynamic of technological innovation in co-operatives and develop a typology based on them. Second, grassroots and social innovation in a Chinese co-operative context have their own characters and indeed a hybrid of capitalism (e.g., agribusiness) and New Rural Re-structuring principles (i.e., similar to ICA ones). Third and finally, we provide detailed agro-food policy implications for each of the four types of co-op innovation. The results of the research may be learned by co-ops and policy makers in other developing economies who face similar challenges as in China.

Abstract:The paper analyzes village-level irrigation management in water scarce northern China in which farmers' livelihood is highly dependent on the appropriation of water due to limited livelihood alternatives and demographic structure with the elderly as the majority. Most scholarly works have focus on the organizational dimension of irrigation systems in China, while empirical researches relating to irrigation management so far have not paid enough attention to its institutional arrangements. We examine two cases studies - one with both surface and groundwater irrigation, and the other only with groundwater irrigation - to explore how sets of rules, physical attributes of irrigation systems, and social characteristics of communities jointly shape village-level irrigation management. Institutions of Sustainability framework is employed to facilitate the institutional analysis, through which we further discuss the emergency of self-organizing behaviors and origination of specific irrigation forms. We draw the conclusion that the organization of irrigation should fit not only the physical environment but also the institutional context and there is no one-for-all solution for governing irrigation in the field. In addition, we highlight the importance of the participation of locals in irrigation management as the research indicates the capability of locals to organize them for better use of natural resources on which their livelihoods are highly dependent. Finally, we suggest that irrigation management could be improved in future by introducing water users associations into surface irrigation management and devolving this management directly to water users along with participatory land planning. Abstract:In the development of higher education in modern China,a group of agricultural teachers composed of overseas returnees in agriculture were active.At the beginning of 20th century,many young people from the coastal Jiangsu,Zhejiang and Guangdong,cherishing the ideals of ″saving China through education″,″saving China through agriculture″,went to the institutes of higher agricultural learning in Japan and France to study sericulture,agronomy and horticulture.Since 1909,with the tide shifting to America,more young people went to the institutes of higher learning,e.g.Cornell University to study the disciplines relevant to agriculture and many got degrees.Since the mid and later 1910s,they returned to China successively and joined the teaching and research in institutes of higher agricultural learning.They introduced the modern college concepts and disciplines of higher agriculture in the West and reformed them according to the actual Chinese conditions.In a sense,they made contributions to the formation and development of higher agricultural disciplines in modern China by establishing a triple mode of ″teaching,research and promotion″,exploring teaching theories,compiling new textbooks,cultivating better teaching faculty,conducting scientific research,organizing academic groups and initiating academic journals.

Abstract:This paper reviews the evolution of agricultural innovation system in China in the past 50 years. The paper then identifies several problems that block the development currently. A case study of Shouguang city shows a possible way in which transformation of agricultural sector is proceeding. It argues that organizational and institutional innovation are crucial, so that simplified imitation would not work for absorption of experiences successful elsewhere. Local conditions must be incorporated for particular regions in the effort for agricultural transformation.

Abstract:China is a large agricultural nation,and the development of the rural areas is critical to the fate of the whole nation.By placing the priority on the development of the rural areas since the Reform and Opening-up with great achievements,the reform of the rural circulation system has played a significant role in developing the rural economy.The government also enacted laws to ensure smooth operation of agricultural products circulation.However,the legal regime is still yet to be established for regulating agricultural products circulation regardless of these achievements in this regard.An overall survey reveals that the current rural market rules are still not able to meet the demand of the fast-developing rural economy by sustainable economic development strategy,which means the relative law system should be built and complate to fill those existing racancies in certain business areas.

Abstract:Agricultural technology innovation has played an important role in the development of modern agriculture.Its contribution rate to progress of agricultural science and technology(S&T) has reached 56％.S&T has become the main driving force for China's agricultural development.But agricultural S&T still lacks a major breakthrough in core areas,and its overall level is not high,the transformation and promotion ability of these innovation results is obviously weak,and can not quide and support the development of modern agriculture.This paper evaluated the research papers in the fields of agricultural technology innovation and diffusion in China;analyzed the existing problems in previous research activities;pointed out that the institutional basis and social cultural background of agricultural technology innovation and diffusion should be paid more attention.Scholars could analyze the current difficulties and way out in the diffusion of agricultural technology innovation from the rural governance structure in the future.

Abstract:Traditional farmer cooperatives, new generation farmer cooperatives, and investor-owned firms (IOFs), are compared regarding their value added and value added rate in terms of product marketing. The results of the analysis regarding the pear supply chain in Zhejiang province in China indicate that IOFs obtain a higher value added or value added rate than farmer cooperatives. New generation cooperatives mitigate the under-investment problem of traditional cooperatives in a certain extent. However, farmer cooperatives have some advantages over investor-owned firms in benefiting farmers.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issues of rural land institutional reform through analyzing the current situation and effects of the new-round institutional innovation in Chengdu.Methods employed included documentation and causal analysis.The results showed that the innovative measures were very effective in enhancing the property transfer in Chengdu,such as the land title and certification program,the cultivated land protection fund,the transaction platform,the cooperative of house construction,and the company guaranteed by government.In order to further reform the rural land institutions the paper concluded that it was necessary to 1)enhance the cultivated land preservation and ensure the benefits of farmers;2) extend the scope of the platform to improve the service for transactions;3)develop the main bodies of agricultural production to accelerate the economic growth;4)organize new pattern of rural cooperatives for better management in terms of dual levels;5)ameliorate the current law and establish a unified land market system.

Abstract:In recent years, various types of farmer' s have developed rapidly in China and the government has attached certain importance to them. However, generally speaking, farmer' s in China develop at rather low level. The paper briefly describes the actualities of the overall development of farmer' s in China, analyzes the restrictive factors (fragment of land, polarization of farmers, lack of cooperative entrepreneurs, worries of the government, rural economic developing route, etc.) of the rise and development of farmer's in China and illustrates the organizational form, decision-making mechanism and benefit mechanism of farmer's in China. Influenced by the above-mentioned restrictive factors, farmer' s in China have been different from the traditional ones in rules and forms since 1990s. At least, the farmer's in the coastal districts such as Zhejiang Province, Jiangsu Province and Shanghai City show the distinctive features of the system arrangement and development trend as a new generation cooperatives .

Abstract:Farmer cooperative organizations are regarded as a significant way to reform Chinese rural marketing system and to improve farmers' organizational process. Based on the summary of International Symposium on Institutional Arrangements and Legislative Issues of Farmer Cooperatives and in light of the background of globalization and marketing competition, farmer cooperatives are confronted with compounded challenges and opportunities. According to international experience, the profound issue of the development of cooperatives hinges upon achieving a balance between respecting and reforming of the cooperatives' essential characteristics. While farmer cooperative organizations in China are still in the initial phase of their developing process, the pressing issues to be attended to consist of enhancing the construction of the inner institution of cooperatives and accelerating the cooperative legislation progress, so as to promote their sound growth.

This study explores the present state of China's agricultural futures market, evaluating metrics such as total market turnover and penetration.
