Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:Nanolayered carbon/silica superstructures with tunable morphologies (tubes, fibers, or spheres) and sizes (micro-sized or macroscopic) were synthesized by self-assembly of perylenedidimide-bridged silsesquioxane through an easy sol-gel process followed by carbonization. The derived nanocomposite materials show interesting electrical properties, i.e., the conductivity increases exponentially with temperature.

Abstract:Mesoporous silicas with hierarchical structures were synthesized under a mild alkali condition by cationic or mixed cationic-nonionic surfactant templating. When cetylpyridium bromide was used, a novel morphology of mesoporous silica of type MCM-41 was formed. It was obsearved. that single nanotubes with diameter of about 5 nm and bundles of nanotubes grew from the (001) surface of the mesoporous silica particles, forming a paintbrush-like morphology. The synthesis process was investigated and the formation mechanism of such a surface nanotube patterning is discussed. When mixed surfactant of cetylpyridium chloride and Triton X-100 was used, a mixed ordered-disordered hierarchical mesostructure with arc rings of submicrometer scales was observed in the synthesized mesoporous silica which exhibits a narrow pore size distribution, high surface area and a large pore volume. Are ropes consisting of ordered mesopores, as well as many spheres of submicrometer in diameter with shells of about 40 nm in thickness consisting of ordered arrays of mesopores, were observed, though the majority of the particles contained disordered mesoporous microdomains. This material lacks overall long-range ordering whereas local ordering of mesopores exists.

Abstract:A novel procedure has been developed for the synthesis of spongelike silica membranes with three-dimensional meso-macrostructures. The process utilizes multiphase media comprised of a mesoscopically ordered block copolymer/silica phase that macroscopically separates from an electrolyte phase. This results in hierarchically organized composite structures whose different characteristic length scales can be independently adjusted.

Abstract:Fine control of the self-assembly of silicon species to hierachical materials has attracted research attention for many years. The mesostructures produced by such processes under weak acidic-basic conditions mimic bioenvironments are the focus of current research. In this study, mesoporous silicas with various novel morphologies such as mesoporous spheres, nanotubes, and oligomeric nanotubes have been systematically synthesized by using boric acid in the system, which is the key reagent for the fine control of the assembly of the silica precursors. The as-prepared materials are characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and nitrogen sorption measurements. The results support the assembly process of the nanomicelle of silica and surfactant under the conditions of boric acid, from which the synergistic weak interactions cause the morphology evolution of silicas. The current research provides effective information for understanding the formation of mesoporous silica under conditions mimicking biosilification processes.

Abstract:Hierarchical assemblies of perylenetetracarboxylic diimide bridged silsesquioxane (PDBS) with controlled structure at multi-length scale are studied using both experimental and computational methods. The organization process spans multi-length scales and includes three continuous steps: 1) stacking of the preprogrammed molecules into small clusters, 2) growing of the small clusters into nanoscale building blocks with various sizes and shapes depending on the experimental conditions, and 3) aggregation of nanoscale building blocks into micro- or macro-scale assemblies. The main factors determining the assembly morphology are the second and third steps, which can be controlled by varying the experimental conditions, such as solution drying rate, solvent composition, and PDBS concentration. Despite the different morphologies, all of these assemblies possess highly ordered lamellar structure. It is found that incorporating perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PD) moieties into the highly ordered silica network endows the PD components with high thermal and mechanical stability, as well as improved optical and electronic properties.

Abstract:Silica cocoons are synthesized via a cooperation of hexagonal P123 micelles and O/W emulsions. These silica cocoons are closed on one side but open on another side. The wall of these silica cocoons is hierarchically constructed by hexagonally ordered channels, which is produced by the aggregation of P123 micelles onto the emulsion droplets while the alternating protuberant and hollow wall of these silica cocoons result from a preferential silica condensation around the emulsion droplets. This paper provides a tunable route to synthesis hierarchically constructed nano-sized silica material with 200–500nm long hexagonally ordered channels, which is determined by the size of the emulsion droplets.

Abstract:Bicontinuous mesoporous silica with hierarchical pore structure was obtained by self-assembly approach under biphasic oil–water system. The silica consists of two kinds of interconnecting pores with sizes of ca. 10nm and ca. 40nm, and has a surface area of 711m2g−1. By introducing the synthesized silica as matrix, novel composite gel electrolytes are fabricated, which show high ionic conductivity. The composite gel electrolyte could be used in both dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and lithium battery. Our results demonstrate that the quasi-solid state DSSC based on the novel composite electrolyte exhibits an encouraging overall efficiency of 4.31% at room temperature, and the lithium battery with sound capacity and capacity retention is also achieved.

Abstract:Parastichy, the spiral arrangement of plant organs, is an example of the long-range apparent order seen in biological systems. These ordered arrangements provide scientists with both an aesthetic challenge and a mathematical inspiration. Synthetic efforts to replicate the regularity of parastichy may allow for molecular-scale control over particle arrangement processes. Here we report the packing of a supramolecular truncated cuboctahedron (TCO) into double-helical (DH) nanowires on a graphite surface with a non-natural parastichy pattern ascribed to the symmetry of the TCOs and interactions between TCOs. Such a study is expected to advance our understanding of the design inputs needed to create complex, but precisely controlled, hierarchical materials. It is also one of the few reported helical packing structures based on Platonic or Archimedean solids since the discovery of the Boerdijk-Coxeter helix. As such, it may provide experimental support for studies of packing theory at the molecular level.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) architectures assembling with Zn2SiO4 nanowires were synthesized by a novel molten-salt method using rice husk both as biomorphic template and SiO2 source. Also, ZnCl2 powder was chosen as reactant and molten-salt. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope were used to investigate the morphology and composition of this unique architecture. Nitrogen adsorption measurements verified the presence of mesoporous structure. The growth process of the synthesized Zn2SiO4 nanowires was proposed, including the introduction of ZnCl2 to rice husk, the formation of ZnOCl2·H2O nanostructures, and the growth of 3D Zn2SiO4 textured nanowires. Furthermore, the absorption capacity of 3D Zn2SiO4 architectures to remove Fe3+, Cr3+ and Mg2+ in water was performed.

Abstract:Monodisperse closed-pore silica spheres with small pore diameters have been prepared through a simple self-assembly approach. The closed-pore silica spheres were synthesized in near neutral conditions, using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (C(16)TAB) as a template. The products show a spherical morphology with a uniform size of similar to 120 nm in diameter, which are formed by the dense packing of silica coated spherical micelles with similar to 5 nm in diameter and similar to 3 nm in isolated interior space. It is shown that the use of a cationic surfactant and synthetic conditions that stabilize the silica coated spherical micelles are responsible for the formation of a closed-pore mesostructure. Considering the silica-coated micelles, the building blocks to the closed-pore mesostructure, have a smaller size compared to those in previous reports, it is expected that our approach may be extended to prepare functionalized materials with potential applications as low dielectric constant insulators in the microelectronics industry.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous Silica materials have been synthesized through a confinement self-assembly approach in the skeletal scaffolds of commercial polyurethane (PU) foams. Macroporous mesoporous silica materials with it well-ordered two-dimensional (2-D) hexagonal (p6mm) mesostructure have been synthesized in in acidic solution using tetraethoxysilane as a precursor, triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 as a mesostructural template, and PU foams with three-dimensional (3-D) interconnecting strut networks as a macrostructure scaffold. By controlling the volume ratio of the cast silica Sol to the PU foam scaffolds, hierarchically porous silica monoliths with various macroscope structures can be obtained. The porous silica monoliths can be disassembled into uniform polyhedron-like particles. The porous silica polyhedrons exhibit macropores 100-500 mu m in diameter, adjustable uniform mesopores (6.5-9.3 nm in diameter), high surface areas (340-780 m(2)/g), and large volumes (0.48-1.16 cm(3)/g). The resulting macroporous/mesoporous silica polyhedrons show an excellent adsorption and remove capability of Microcystin-LR in wastewater.

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous silica can be synthesized by either the alkaline route or the acidic route, both using surfactants as templates. Morphological transformations of mesoporous silica can produce various hierarchical orders. Different morphologies are produced under different synthetic conditions. In the alkaline route, the surfactant/silicate liquid crystal system undergoes phase transformation to form vesicles and further transforms to the hexagonal phase. The results are tubule-within-tubule and hollow pillar-within-sphere structures depending on cosurfactant/surfactant composition. Using nitric acid in the acidic route, one can obtain hierarchical ropes or gyroids depending on stirring conditions. Ammonia hydrothermal treatment can induce further morphological transformation to nanotubes of mesoporous silica.

Large-Pore Mesoporous Silica with Three-Dimensional Wormhole Framework Structures

Abstract:Large-pore mesoporous silica with 3D wormhole framework structures (denoted MSU-J) are prepared through a supramolecular hydrogen-bonding assembly pathway from low-cost sodium silicate as the silica source and commercially available mono- and triamine Jeffamine and Surfonamine surfactants as structure-directing porogens. The calcined mesostructures exhibit large pore sizes (up to 8.2 nm), surface areas (632-1030 m(2)/g) and pore volumes (0.5-2.0 cm(3)/g), depending on the surfactant chain length and synthesis temperature (25-65 °C). The textural properties of these new wormhole mesostructures are comparable to those of hexagonal SBA-15 derivatives and large pore MCM-48. However, unlike the SBA-15 structure type, wherein the 3D pore network is formed by connecting 1D cylindrical mesopores through micropores, MSU-J mesophases have wormhole framework structures containing fully interconnected 3D mesopores that can minimize the diffusion limitations often encountered in adsorption and chemical catalysis. Also, unlike large pore MCM-48, which requires cost-intensive tetraethylorthosilicate as a silica source and the use of a co-surfactant as a pore expander under strong acid conditions, MSU-J mesostructures are assembled from low cost sodium silicate in the presence of a single Jeffamine or Surfonamine porogen at near-neutral pH.

Abstract:Self-standing thiol-functionalized fibrous membrane with bimodal pore structure was successfully fabricated through the combination of electrospinning and surfactant-directing pore formation technique. We also found that the interference of electric field as well as the rapid solvent evaporation during the electrospinning process has a negative effect on the formation of ordered mesoporous structures. As high-performance adsorption-based filtration system, such hierarchically structured membrane is found to efficiently remove Cu (II) ions under high flux.

Abstract:This account describes our recent advances on the fabrication of mesoporous/mesostructured silica materials through the co-structure-directing route. This route establishes critical interactions between the head groups of templates and co-structure-directing agent (CSDA) to form highly ordered mesostructures and well-defined morphologies. Three particular approaches are described based on the different kinds of templates: anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, and biomolecules (DNA and peptides). Notably, because of the pairing effect between templates and CSDA, the functional groups can be arranged regularly in the surface of the mesopores. Moreover, the applications and future perspective of mesoporous materials synthesized through co-structure-directing route are briefly described.

Abstract:Periodic mesoporous silica was synthesized within the pores of an anodic alumina membrane (AAM) by acid-catalyzed vapor phase synthesis. Three different surfactants, ionic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and nonionic F127 and P123, were used as a structure directing agent (SDA). Surfactant solution containing HCl was introduced into the AAM pores under moderate aspiration to avoid the formation of an undesirable mesoporous silica layer on the AAM surface. As-prepared samples were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), small-angle X-ray diffraction and nitrogen sorption measurements. When using CTAB as an SDA, columnar hexagonal, circular hexagonal, and columnar hexagonal surrounded by circular hexagonal mesostructures were formed depending on the mass ratio of CTAB to HCl solution. This was a new observation in contrast to the previous reports where only the hexagonal columnar structure was obtained for CTAB irrespective of synthesis conditions. When F127 was used as an SDA, a cubic mesostructure was formed and the cubic mesostructure could be synthesized over a relatively wide concentration range of F127. When using P123 as an SDA, various mesostructures were formed such as disordered lamellar, silica nanotube filled with closely stacked silica nanoparticles, inverse circular hexagonal, inverse columnar hexagonal, and lamellar structures. These characteristic mesostructures within AAM pores were observed for the first time. In addition, a high filling factor was confirmed for all structural types of mesoporous silica within the AAM pores.
