Abstract:Performers oftentimes learn music without taking the time to learn about the work historically. Oftentimes this kind of research into the performance practices of the time can be key to successfully playing a piece of music in the way it was intended by the composer. Although there are many different concepts that can be considered when studying a piece of music, I have specifically focused my research on the instrument the piece was written for, the articulation styles used, the type of tone produced and expected, how ornamentation and embellishment is approached, and how cadenzas were written and used. In this manuscript I have focused on a single specific work for my own instrument, W.A. Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D Major, K.314, and applied these concepts to how I would as a musician consider when approaching performing the piece.

Abstract:Historical musicologists have been seeking objective and powerful techniques to collect, analyze, and verify their findings for many decades. The aim of this study was to show the importance of such domain-specific problems to achieve actionable knowledge discovery in the real world. Our focus is on finding evidence for the chronological ordering of J.S. Bach's manuscripts, by proposing a musicologist-driven mining method for extracting quantitative information from early music manuscripts. Bach's C-clefs were extracted from a wide range of manuscripts under the direction of domain experts, and with these, the classification of C-clefs was conducted. The proposed methods were evaluated on a dataset containing over 1000 clefs extracted from J.S. Bach's manuscripts. The results show more than 70% accuracy for dating J.S. Bach's manuscripts. Dating of Bach's lost manuscripts was quantitatively hypothesized, providing a rough barometer to be combined with other evidence to evaluate musicologists' hypotheses, and the usability of this domain-driven approach is demonstrated.

Abstract:Chinese piano music was established on the base of the national music system, including silent mode, and horizontal melody thinking etc., and thus has different performing methods and techniques with western piano music. For example, on the performing methods of fingering, key touching method and pedaling in piano playing, in addition to abide by the existing rule, there should also be special treatment in special circumstances, and figure out how to appropriately display the charm of Chinese music. For another example, among the Chinese piano music adapted from folk instrument music, there is no lack of timber, charm, harmony, feeling and other elements. Abstract:Compare music analytical methods with the studying way of composing technical theory in tradition,it possesses very strong nature of practice and is shown as obvious nature of significant annotation.With the help of those efficient analytical methods,we could be able to show deeply and potential pitch-relationship in musical works and other parameters,such as rhythm,timbre,dynamics,etc.,in structural layout.Analytical methods usually are sorts of latent statement of musical semantics,it shows various aspects of which writing language is not able to express.Therefore,methods are never seen as may or may not be needed,but be imperative.It relates to conclusive quality,reasonable means and also a heart matter in music analysis,should not be evade question.The paper puts forward the point that we recognize multiple style of music according to multiple analytical procedures,holding on various analytical methods to suit the demands of multiple music style.It is practicable on the point of MASTERING ANALYTICAL PRINCIPLES AND GETTING ON LOGICAL INSUFFICIENT GROUNDS.There are four sorts of problems in reality,which leading to and becoming heavier obstruction of discipline development,such as,improper subject on writing a paper,deficient and old-fashioned methods to analysis,undefined purpose to music analysis,deficient information to music analysis,etc… The minimum requirement to the conclusion of music analysis should be give a satisfactory explanation on oneself,but a high order of pursue to music analysis should be supplied logic evidence.

Aspects of Historical Musicology

Abstract:Background. The article examines the piano piece «Red Lilies Bloomed on the Mountain» by the Chinese composer Wang Jiangzhong. The general characteristics of the genre of the program piece, the imagery, symbolism or folklore of the names of piano works are considered, which help to specify the figurative content with the help of verbal decoding, bringing the performer and the listener closer to the figurative and emotional essence of Chinese national instrumental creativity. Objectives. In order to identify the universal mechanism of piano interpretation of program pieces by Chinese composers, the specific features and specificity of Chinese national artistic thinking are analyzed, which is reflected in the performing style, which includes the understanding of the figurative sphere, issues of a technological nature, and the stylistic authenticity of the performance. Methods. The research methodology requires a systematic musicological approach to the study of the selected musical material, which, in turn, led to the use of such methods as: historical-typological, musical-aesthetic, genre-stylistic, interpretological, comparative. Results. If the pianist fully understands the character of the piece and the main ideas of Chinese philosophy, then this knowledge will tend to direct the performance of any piece to the creative process. The psychological aspect of performance requirements consists of two aspects: – determination and confidence of mood, firmness in one’s convictions and ideals, which are reflected in the music of the play thanks to certain musical techniques and compositional techniques; – the natural mobility and lightness of the melody, the overall consistency of its sound, as well as the harmonious combination of such musical characteristics as the smoothness and contrast of the sound. The requirements for the aesthetic component of the work are aimed mainly at researching the national uniqueness of the work, reflecting its beauty and symbolic content, as well as at a detailed analysis of the synthesis of national and Western musical traditions. Existing attempts at music notation in san-ban rhythms should be classified as the most general instructions for performers, especially those who do not have sufficient experience in the field of musical self-expression in the traditions of Chinese music. Conclusions. The performer must also focus on such aspects as: awareness of various philosophical ideas that directly affect both the symbolic content and imagery of Chinese music itself, and the creative process associated with its reproduction and performance on stage; the importance of understanding the title of the work, its historical and cultural context; the need for an accurate sense of latitudinal relationships in the theme and texture of the work, feeling the sound ideal of authentic sounding with the inner ear.

Abstract:Beethoven Sonata op. 53 "Waldstein" serves as a pretext for the analysis of some elements of interpretation, normally used in the pedagogical process: the formal conception, the tempo, the logical organization of the musical material, the pedal and the orchestral sonority of the composer's piano music. Exploring my experience of more than four decades, both as a pedagogue and as a performer, the text tries to bring readers closer to the stylistic characteristics of Beethoven's piano music and to my personal conception of the interpretation of these works.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the pedagogical analysis of the aesthetic foundations of the Baroque culture and identification of the most significant features of the musical art of this era. In the universal picture of the world created by Baroque thinkers, who tended to a comprehensive understanding of being, the main role is assigned to man, or rather, to the problem of human self-knowledge. The created hierarchy of moral values distinguishes between the “high” and “low”, “earthly” and “heavenly” in a person, directs a person to the path of conscious self-control and reasonable self-restraint. In this regard, at the present stage of cultural development, it is necessary to search for the embodiment of the immanent features of the poetics of Baroque compositions from the position of deep knowledge of all levels of their content and symbolism. In modern musical performance, the problems of interpreting Baroque music arise with renewed vigor. In professional training of modern performing musicians, mastering the works of the Baroque style and understanding its aesthetics is an important stage in the formation of their professional competencies.

Abstract:"The aura of the composer Frédéric Chopin penetrated the Western European musical culture, touching massively other cultures as well, up to the Chinese one; the certainty through which we recognize the thrill of this aura is mostly due to the fact that ”Chopin’s compositions have opened a new era in the piano’s history”. Being present in the Parisian salon with Rossini and Liszt, the great Pole achieved an organic interweaving between the tradition of Austro-German and French music. The analysis of the sonata No. 1 in C-minor op. 4 builds the core of the present study and relevantly denotes the connection of its architecture together with the set of conventions belonging to the format of the sonata-genre coming from Beethoven. As we know, the Sonata-pattern designed by Beethoven was expanded throughout the Romantic period as well as the conditions under which the aesthetics of Romanticism found a specific corridor reaching its maximum of expression. In a way of an idiomatic, natural model of transmission, the Chopin’s style of conceiving music played its predominant role. Taking into account in this approach theories belonging to the aesthetics field and some theoretical applications with significance for understanding the levers of construction concerning this sonata, op. 4 (composed when the composer was only eighteen (1828)) and Chopin’s approach of the other stages of emancipation within the genre, I will highlight its rules which emphasize implicitly the dialogue with the ”Sonata-Fantasy” genre, as this construct appears (for instance) in sonata op. 58. Abstract:The purpose of this study is the analysis of Y.H. Hummel's Second Piano Concerto from the perspective of Biedermeier's positions of "light" ("diamond") pianism of the Restoration era, which deployed saving the spiritual foundations of Rococo in the conditions of secularised art of the post-Vienna school. The methodological basis of the research is the intonation approach of the school of B. Asafyev in Ukraine, which is embodied in the works of D. Androsova, O. Markova, O. Muravska, L. Shevchenko and has direct implications for the institutions of Chinese musicology (see the works of Ma Wei, Wu Golin, others). The specifics of the methods of historical-descriptive, musicological analytical, cultural, stylistic comparative, interdisciplinary approach make up the specifics of the research apparatus of the author of the essay. The scientific novelty of the work is revealed in the fact that, for the first time in Ukrainian and Chinese musicology, the so-called Concerto of Y.H. Hummel is analysed in the light of the positions of Biedermeier's "diamond" pianism of "light play" in the continuation of Mozartianism in piano works (based on the works of D. Androsova and L. Shevchenko) and in the development of the concept of neo-symbolism of post-avant-garde modernity according to O. Markova in relation to the performing revival of Hummel's heritage. Conclusions. Piano concert by Y.N. Hummel's A-moll op. 85 is marked by the advantages of pianistic lyrical flourishes over the manifestations of theatrical drama. The predominance of the lyricism of piano flourishes feeds the positions of romanticism against the background of Biedermeier's ideal expressive instructions, inspired by religious sobriety and, like Rococo art, addressed to the ideal aspirations of the soul and a harmonious worldview. In the Concerto, we rely on Mozartian tectonics (the theme of the soloist in the second exposition, mainly a compensatory function of the orchestra), the structure is dominated by exposition, which "washes away" the sonata relations. The predominant position of "piano lyricism" of ultra-fast finger "small technique", the presence of genres (signs of march, nocturne, anthem) in the expressiveness of themes, "obliteration" of tempo-textural contrasts between the extreme and middle parts of the cycle are evident. The features of crescendoing drama with increasing movement intensity from the beginning to the end of the concert cycle in a two-phase (Parts I-II-III) presentation of energy accumulation are revealed, which corresponds to the two-phase nature of the early Christian liturgy honoured by the Biedermeier culture.
