Abstract:The article examines the specifics of the performance chronotope (time-space) of two masterpieces written by outstanding composers-contemporaries, whose lifetime is characterized by a gradual transition from the classical to the romantic style. Its essential characteristics and the significance of their awareness by the pianist-performer in the practice of working at a musical piece are highlighted. The “performance chronotope” is one of the parameters involved in the field of contemporary music-performance interpretation (Nikolaievska, 2020: 144). This publication is related to our previous work, where space-time characteristics of clavier sonatas by D. Scarlatti, С. Ph. E. Bach, J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, and M. Clementi were revealed from the viewpoint of a piano performer (Tarabanov, 2021). Some parameters of the performance chronotope that have been outlined before – interaction and mutual balance of statics and dynamics, organizing function of performance time in sound musical form, metrorhythmic performance inertia, continuity of space-time and performance prediction (anticipation) – are supplemented by others, such as performance understanding of the form through working at details, and psychological space-time of the performer (as one of the components of the performance chronotope of the work). This is attributable to new interpretative tasks of the pianist in Beethoven’s and Schubert’s Sonatas under consideration. These works have not yet been the subject of analysis from the standpoint of performance chronotope characteristics, which, along with the use of an experimental research method (with the involvement of the author’s experience in concert performance of the considered works10), determined the scientific novelty of the presented study. The results of the study are supposed to be helpful for piano performers in their learning of these works and similar ones. It is especially relevant, because the greatest composer of piano sonatas, Ludwig van Beethoven, is in the spotlight all the time. His so-named “Moonlight” Sonata (op. 27 No. 2) continues to attract new generations of listeners, performers, and researchers (Rosen, 2002; Waltz, 2007; Gordon, 2017, and others). Beethoven’s direct successor, Franz P. Schubert created no less fascinating works in the genre of piano sonata. Among them is the Sonata D. 958 in C minor, where Beethoven’s influence is observed to a great extent. As in the case with concrete musical examples analyzed in the article, the piano performer can realize on practice their own interpretative searches connected with the use of timespace characteristics. In particular, a method of “expanding the performance chronotope” is recommended, which should significantly facilitate the mastering of complicated technical episodes.

Abstract:In a video commentary, pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim (2016) discussed the dangers of verbal descriptions of music by presenting two seemingly contradictory explanations about the ‘meaning’ of the theme of the final movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata Op.10/3 given by pianists Edwin Fischer and Claudio Arrau. We examined the tempo and dynamic fluctuations obtained from the studio recordings of this theme by Fischer in 1948 and 1954, and by Arrau in 1964 and 1985 by using the Sonic Visualiser software (Cannam et al., 2010), and interpreted these results by using Steve Larson’s (2012) theory of musical forces, and Robert Hatten’s (2018) theory of virtual agency in western music. According to our analyses, the differences in the performances of Fischer and Arrau can be metaphorically correlated with the different meanings these pianists attributed to Beethoven’s theme. We concluded that the seemingly contradictory verbal descriptions of these pianists indicate different aesthetically warranted emotions they aimed to communicate through their performances of Beethoven’s theme.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Qingdao Art School is implementing a holistic piano education approach, combining traditional and modern techniques to prepare students for the evolving musical world and develop diverse skills. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to survey teacher’s perspectives on piano teaching strategies at Qingdao Art School. This study used qualitative research methodology, including semi-structured interviews with piano teachers at Qingdao Art School, to understand their teaching methods. Key areas of focus included pedagogical approaches, experiences with different strategies, challenges faced, and perspectives on effectiveness. The interview guideline was used to gather in-depth insights, with eight questions posed to experts. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, with essential analysis steps including thematic coding, theme grouping, direct interpretation, and data presentation. Results: The text provides a comprehensive guide to teaching music theory, focusing on various pedagogical approaches. It suggests blended learning, collaborative projects, improvisational techniques, diverse musical genres, and gamification for accessibility. Challenges in teaching include adaptive teaching strategies, personalized music selection, practice routines, classroom community building, and integrating new technologies. Methods are promoted through active learning, digital resources, and flexible scheduling. Technology integration is highlighted, with music software, virtual performances, and AR/VR tools. Professional development opportunities are discussed, and student engagement and motivation are discussed. Evaluation and feedback are also discussed, considering technical skills and musical expression. Abstract:"The aura of the composer Frédéric Chopin penetrated the Western European musical culture, touching massively other cultures as well, up to the Chinese one; the certainty through which we recognize the thrill of this aura is mostly due to the fact that ”Chopin’s compositions have opened a new era in the piano’s history”. Being present in the Parisian salon with Rossini and Liszt, the great Pole achieved an organic interweaving between the tradition of Austro-German and French music. The analysis of the sonata No. 1 in C-minor op. 4 builds the core of the present study and relevantly denotes the connection of its architecture together with the set of conventions belonging to the format of the sonata-genre coming from Beethoven. As we know, the Sonata-pattern designed by Beethoven was expanded throughout the Romantic period as well as the conditions under which the aesthetics of Romanticism found a specific corridor reaching its maximum of expression. In a way of an idiomatic, natural model of transmission, the Chopin’s style of conceiving music played its predominant role. Taking into account in this approach theories belonging to the aesthetics field and some theoretical applications with significance for understanding the levers of construction concerning this sonata, op. 4 (composed when the composer was only eighteen (1828)) and Chopin’s approach of the other stages of emancipation within the genre, I will highlight its rules which emphasize implicitly the dialogue with the ”Sonata-Fantasy” genre, as this construct appears (for instance) in sonata op. 58. Abstract:Performers oftentimes learn music without taking the time to learn about the work historically. Oftentimes this kind of research into the performance practices of the time can be key to successfully playing a piece of music in the way it was intended by the composer. Although there are many different concepts that can be considered when studying a piece of music, I have specifically focused my research on the instrument the piece was written for, the articulation styles used, the type of tone produced and expected, how ornamentation and embellishment is approached, and how cadenzas were written and used. In this manuscript I have focused on a single specific work for my own instrument, W.A. Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D Major, K.314, and applied these concepts to how I would as a musician consider when approaching performing the piece.

Abstract:The “quintessence of the nation” Peking Opera is a highly comprehensive form of opera, which has a high artistic status in traditional Chinese culture. At present, the combination of the Internet of things and music can be embodied in smart devices, through a computing device that can perceive and exchange data for the purpose of music. In the more than 100 years of development of the piano art in China, many composers have used Peking Opera singing and board styles, or absorbed the essence and connotation of Peking Opera, taking Peking Opera elements as the core material and source of creation and presenting them instrumentally through piano works. For example, in terms of smart musical instruments, the Internet of things and Internet technology are combined to realize the real-time connection between the remote piano and the piano and accurately reproduce all the touch and pedal movements of the player, so that teachers and students in different spaces can listen to the course. Chinese opera is the essence of Chinese national art and one of the treasures of China’s traditional national music. The composers of our country also constantly apply the opera elements to the piano creation and create many kinds of piano works that conform to the traditional Chinese opera style and reflect the characteristics of the piano. Pedal skills are also an important technique in piano performance. The pedaling method is based on thinking about history and showing the player’s intentions. Only using the correct playing skills can make the music more expressive. This study briefly introduces the development of piano in China and the playing skills of the piano, and at the same time, it briefly describes the principle of piano sounding and the sound of piano. Based on the previous studies, the effects of touch key techniques and pedaling techniques on the sound of the piano are discussed. I hope to provide some references for the piano performers. The average similarity between the final music and the original music is 60% and around 70%. This article provides a reference direction for the diversified dissemination and promotion of theatrical art and provides theoretical and technical reference suggestions for the future creation, performance, and teaching of Chinese piano music.

Abstract:The importance of music teachers reflecting on their teaching practise has been discussed for a long time [(Gaunt 2008. “One-to-one Tuition in a Conservatoire: The Perceptions of Instrumental and Vocal Teachers.” Psychology of Music 36 (2): 215–245; Schön 1987. Educating the Reflective Practitioner. San Francisco)]. However, Haddon [(2009. “Instrumental and Vocal Teaching: How Do Music Students Learn to Teach?” British Journal of Music Education 26 (1): 57–70)] noticed that some private instrumental teachers simply relied on their previous learning and teaching experiences to teach. This qualitative study aimed to understand how private piano teachers reflected on their teaching in terms of their teaching challenges and their pupils’ learning challenges. In reflecting on their own teaching, most of the participants focused mainly on analysis of pupils’ playing errors, and they tended to believe that repeated practice by the learners was the best approach to improving performance. In contrast, a few participants believed their expertise in both music and teaching could help their learners to deal with learning difficulties. Based on the two different reflective attitudes, participants developed their teaching competence differently. These results imply that teachers’ attitudes towards reflection mainly related to their assumptions about education.

Abstract:The research object is the process of developing piano technique among students of secondary educational institutions (schools and colleges) in China and Russia. The article substantiates the methodological aspects of forming finger actions of college students necessary for performing musical pieces and dwells on the professional training of pianists in music academies of China and Russia. The authors of the article have drawn a number of conclusions. The work on musical technique in the Chinese secondary educational institutions is divided into several stages. Each stage focuses on the repetition of technical exercises and rote memorization. Western teachers consider this approach to learning unproductive, but it corresponds to such Chinese personality traits as diligence, hard work and perseverance. The article discusses effective teaching methods that allow the Chinese colleges to achieve high results in the professional training of pianists.
Cultivating music students’ creativity in piano performance: a multiple-case study in China

Abstract:Although creativity in music performance is a global issue among music educators, it has nevertheless received less attention in China. How do piano teachers in China cultivate their students' performance creativity? This article reports on a multiple-case study undertaken in a university located in Guangzhou, China that aimed to examine the teaching strategies of three piano majors and observe their learning responses. The first author taught the students for 14 lessons within a semester, the data coming from a combination of video recordings for observation, self-reflection and semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data from the interviews and video recordings were coded based on the categories and themes that emerged from repeated observations of the video clips. The results indicate that teachers may cultivate performance creativity by nurturing students' imaginations as it relates to individual knowledge and experience. Autonomy in musical expression should be encouraged through teaching genres other than Classical music.

Abstract:In this study, the American pianist and composer Jeff Manookian's "Etudes for the Intermediate Pianist" method was examined. In this qualitative study, the descriptive research model was employed and the literature was scanned through document review. As a result of the examination, no study was found on Manookian's piano etudes. To that end, Jeff Manookian's "Etudes for the Intermediate Pianist" method was examined by considering the characteristics and differences of the etudes, and the elements that the composer aimed to use in the etudes were stated. It is seen that each etitude in the method includes practices that will enable to overcome a different technical difficulty. Including the nuances of musical expression in the etudes and emphasizing the musical terms reveal that the composer adopted an approach that aims to care and increase musicality as well as technical development. Manookian etudes also have a writing style that supports pedal use and performance improvement. As a result of the study, it is thought that Manookian's etudes for intermediate pianists can be used as an alternative source in piano education. Abstract:The article presents practicing pianists and teachers` recommendations and advice on how to form the process of the conceptual foundation of students of higher education institutions. Scherzo No. 1 in B minor op. 20 F. Chopin is one of the brightest masterpieces of the romantic piano repertoire was chosen as an example. In the tradition of Russian music pedagogy, the authors encourage the young pianist to work on the Scherzo from the idea of composing it to details and nuances connected with professional aspects of the artistic conception; they want to encourage the constant striving for thoughtful, comprehensive rich content and perfect form of the performed opus. Thus, to actualize students' personal, cognitive and creative potential, the teacher facilitates the process of acquiring their unique interpretations of a given musical opus. Such a method of facilitation is in demand in Western pedagogy; it was actively developed by such scientists as C. Rogers, J. Freiberg, F. Flemming, T. Kaiser, and others. The main ideas of facilitation are reflected in the pages of their works “Freedom to Learn” [1], “Transformative Dialogues” [2], ” Mining Group Gold: How to Cash in on the Collaborative Brain Power of a Team for Innovation and Results ” [3] and many others. Abstract:Background. The article examines the piano piece «Red Lilies Bloomed on the Mountain» by the Chinese composer Wang Jiangzhong. The general characteristics of the genre of the program piece, the imagery, symbolism or folklore of the names of piano works are considered, which help to specify the figurative content with the help of verbal decoding, bringing the performer and the listener closer to the figurative and emotional essence of Chinese national instrumental creativity. Objectives. In order to identify the universal mechanism of piano interpretation of program pieces by Chinese composers, the specific features and specificity of Chinese national artistic thinking are analyzed, which is reflected in the performing style, which includes the understanding of the figurative sphere, issues of a technological nature, and the stylistic authenticity of the performance. Methods. The research methodology requires a systematic musicological approach to the study of the selected musical material, which, in turn, led to the use of such methods as: historical-typological, musical-aesthetic, genre-stylistic, interpretological, comparative. Results. If the pianist fully understands the character of the piece and the main ideas of Chinese philosophy, then this knowledge will tend to direct the performance of any piece to the creative process. The psychological aspect of performance requirements consists of two aspects: – determination and confidence of mood, firmness in one’s convictions and ideals, which are reflected in the music of the play thanks to certain musical techniques and compositional techniques; – the natural mobility and lightness of the melody, the overall consistency of its sound, as well as the harmonious combination of such musical characteristics as the smoothness and contrast of the sound. The requirements for the aesthetic component of the work are aimed mainly at researching the national uniqueness of the work, reflecting its beauty and symbolic content, as well as at a detailed analysis of the synthesis of national and Western musical traditions. Existing attempts at music notation in san-ban rhythms should be classified as the most general instructions for performers, especially those who do not have sufficient experience in the field of musical self-expression in the traditions of Chinese music. Conclusions. The performer must also focus on such aspects as: awareness of various philosophical ideas that directly affect both the symbolic content and imagery of Chinese music itself, and the creative process associated with its reproduction and performance on stage; the importance of understanding the title of the work, its historical and cultural context; the need for an accurate sense of latitudinal relationships in the theme and texture of the work, feeling the sound ideal of authentic sounding with the inner ear.

Abstract:Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.5op10. 1 is one of the representative works of Beethoven's early piano sonatas, creating a heroic work that belongs to Beethoven's uniqueness. This article uses music visualization analysis technology, combined with the relevant musical background information of Beethoven Piano Sonata No.5. The audio performance of the four pianists was selected as the research content, and the overall velocity of the work, the rhythm of the excerpted passages and the inner elastic rhythm were visualized through the Vums.net platform, and through a series of different pictures, the comparison of the speed velocity diagram and the IOI deviation analysis chart from the macroscopic to the microscopic, the trend of limiting the elastic expansion and contraction of the rhythm can be drawn, and the embodiment of the composition structure can be more and more obviously seen from the figure.
