Abstract:Hollow fibers with nanozeolite walls are firstly fabricated through layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, using carbon fibers as templates, coupled with removal of the templates by calcination. The thickness and the composition of the walls can be readily controlled by varying the number of the deposition cycles and the zeolite types used, respectively.

Abstract:Zeolite beta, silicalite-1, ZSM-5, and TS-1 coated spheres have been prepared successfully through layer-by-layer assembly of nanozeolite/ polymer multilayers on polystyrene (PS) microspheres, and hollow zeolite spheres have been obtained by removal of the core by calcination. In the adsorption process of nanozeolites onto the polvelectrolyte-modified template spheres, it has been found that zeta potential of the zeolite colloidal solution that determines the electrostatic interaction has important effects on the zeolite adsorption procedure. The charge on the original sphere template is not necessary. because proper polyelectrolyte modification could change the surface property of the template and make it suitable for layer-by-layer adsorption. The influences of zeolite type and/or size (40-120 nm), the number of zeolite/poly(diallyl-dimethlammonium) layer pairs, and the template sphere size (0.53-10.3 mum) on the preparation of the hollow zeolite spheres were also discussed.

Abstract:Hollow zeolite fibers (abbreviated as HZF) have been successfully fabricated using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique with carbon fibers as templates and nanosilicalite - 1 as building blocks, followed by removal of the templates by calcinating the zeolite - coated carbon fibers. Dense and complete zeolite deposition on carbon fibers is an essential premise for the preparation of intact HZFs. The formation of zeolite coating depends largely on the applied voltages and the surface charge of nanozeolites, which can be adjusted by the pH of the colloidal solution. In addition, deposition time and colloidal solution concentration also influence the deposit process. The structure of calcined HZFs has been characterized by XRD and IR.

Abstract:A novel technique for fabricating hollow silica spheres (see figure) via a one‐step process is described. The positively charged template polystyrene particles are “dissolved” subsequently, even synchronously, as the silica layer is formed in the same medium. Hollow silica spheres are formed, and neither additional dissolution nor calcination is needed during the whole process. The scale bar represents 1 μm.

Abstract:Micro-sized crystals of mesoporous zeolite NaA (meso-NaA) are prepared and their mechanical strength is compared with conventional NaA crystals. Crystals are characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy and dynamic light scattering. It is found that micro-sized meso-NaA crystals composed by numerous domains of interconnected nanocrystals can be easily smashed by hand-grinding, showing lower mechanical strength than conventional crystals. The suspension of zeolite NaA nanocrystals (similar to 110 nm) can be easily obtained after removing micro-sized crystals by centrifuging the suspension of the grinded crystals at 1000 rpm and can be used to seed hollow fiber supports. Zeolite membranes with high separation performance are obtained on the seeded hollow fiber supports by seeded growth. This method may open a new way to prepare zeolite nanocrystals for many applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hollow zeolite microcapsules with spherical and various non-spherical shapes were fabricated through a novel strategy involving the crystallization of mesoporous silica (MS) particles. This conversion process was achieved by vapor phase transport treatment of MS particles which were pre-seeded by nanozeolite via the electrostatic assembly technique. The capsule shell was composed of closed packed zeolite crystals growing from the initial seeds by consuming the silica “nutrition” in the internal MS cores. The effects of seed size and seed type on the transformation of MS particles were investigated in detail. More importantly, guest species (e.g. Fe2O3 and Ag nanoparticles) which had been incorporated in the mesopores of the MS particles could be spontaneously encapsulated inside the generated capsules during the MS consumption process, thus, hollow zeolite capsules with functionalized interiors could be easily fabricated.

Abstract:Zeolite coated fibers (abbreviated as ZCF) were successfully fabricated using carbon fibers as templates and nanozeolite as building block, through layer-by-layer assembly technique. After removal of the templates by calcination, intact hollow fibers of zeolite (abbreviated as HFZ) were also obtained. The optimum performance conditions for obtaining these types of materials were systematically studied. The pH value of the zeolite colloidal solution was a key factor affecting the fabrication of these zeolite coated fibers and hollow zeolite fibers. Other conditions, such as ionic strength of the dipping solution, drying the samples after every layer of zeolite nanocrystals deposited and adsorbing a PDDA layer on the silicalite -1 coated carbon fibers before drying also had influence on fabricating intact fibers. The wall thickness and composition of these novel materials could be readily tailored by varying the number of nanozeolite/PDDA [ poly ( diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) ] deposition cycles and zeolite types used, respectively. The hollow zeolite fibers with hybrid walls were also fabricated through stepwise deposition of different kinds of nanozeolites.

Abstract:We report the direct fabrication of mesoporous zeolite with a hollow spherical/ellipsoidal capsule structure by using conventional TPAOH and CTAB as soft micro- and mesopore generating templates; the mesoporous zeolite shows a high surface area of 717 m(2) g(-1) and small mesopore size of around 3 nm.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:Zirconium dioxide hollow microspheres were prepared using carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres as a template through a heterogeneously nucleating wrapping technique. Firstly, carbonaceous microspheres wrapped by ZrO2 were synthesized, and then the obtained precursor was calcinated at 800 degrees C for 2 hours to remove the template. Based on SEM, TEM and EDS analysis, the microstructure, composition and thermal decomposition process of the precursor as well as the final products were investigated. The forrnation mechanisms of the core-shell structure precursor and the hollow microspheres were also discussed.

Abstract:A novel and flexible strategy involving hydrothermal transformation of guest-incorporated zeolite-seeded mesoporous silica spheres was proposed to prepare guest-encapsulated hollow zeolite spheres and three-dimensionally (3D) ordered macroporous zeolite monoliths. The guest species that were pre-incorporated into the mesopores of silica spheres could be spontaneously encapsulated inside the formed hollow zeolite shells by consuming silica nutrition of the original mesoporous silica cores during the hydrothermal process. A wide range of guest materials with a size ranging from nanometers to micrometers, e.g., Ag and PdO nanoparticles, and mesoporous spheres of carbon and polymer of micrometer size were successfully encapsulated into both discrete hollow zeolite spheres and 3D ordered macroporous zeolite monoliths. Such materials are expected to find a variety of applications such as catalysis, adsorption, and novel microreactors for their special structures with active species inside and zeolitic porous shell outside.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a novel method for the fabrication of small monodisperse hollow silica spheres. In this approach, when silica shells were coated on polystyrene particles by the sol-gel method, the polystyrene cores were dissolved subsequently, even synchronously, in the same medium to form monodisperse hollow spheres. Neither additional dissolution nor a calcination process was needed to remove the polystyrene cores. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and porosity measurements were used to characterize the monodisperse hollow silica spheres.

Abstract:This study demonstrates for the first time that porous zeolite films with surface patterns such as knotted-rope web and wrinkled honeycomb can be obtained by convection-assisted dynamic self-assembly of zeolite nanoparticles. The study also shows that an appropriate dispersant and the presence of zeolite nanoparticles with a specific range of particle sizes in the colloidal suspension are critical for pattern formation. The patterned zeolite films have a well-defined bimodal pore size distribution (i.e., 0.55 and 2.6 nm) with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 680-750 m(2)/g and are attractive for potential applications in fields such as thin film catalysis, adsorption separation, chemical sensor arrays, and components in microelectronic devices.

Abstract:Mechanically stable zeolite monoliths containing three-dimensional, ordered, closed macropores (see Figure) have been fabricated by hydrothermal treatment of nanozeolite seeded mesoporous silica spheres. The facile speed of sedimentation and digestion renders the whole process suitable for large-scale production of macroporous zeolite materials, which may be used as adsorbents and dielectric insulators.
