Abstract:Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (H. rosa-sinensis) has been largely used in traditional medicine. This study aims to review the pharmacological and phytochemical properties of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L and also summarize the pharmacological, photochemical, and toxicological characteristics of H. rosa-sinensis. The current review focuses on the distribution, chemical content, and main uses of H. rosa-sinensis. Various scientific databases, including ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, etc., were used. Correct plant names were verified from plantlist.org. The results were interpreted, analyzed, and documented based on bibliographic information. This plant has been frequently used in conventional medicine due to its high concentration of phytochemicals. All its parts contain numerous chemical compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, anthocyanins, saponins, cyclopeptide alkaloids, and vitamins. More interestingly, the roots of this plant contain glycosides, tannins, phytosterols, fixed oils, fats, flavonoids, saponins, gums, and mucilages. The leaves contain alkaloids, glycosides, reducing sugars, fat, resin, and sterols. The stem contains other chemical compounds, such as ß-sitosterol, teraxeryl acetate, cyclic sterculic, and malvalic acids. Finally, the flowers contain riboflavin, thiamine, apigenidine, oxalic acid, citric acid, quercetin, niacin, pelargonidine, and ascorbic acid. This species has a wide variety of pharmacological applications, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antifertility, antifungal, anticancer, hair growth-promoting, antihyperlipidemic, reproductive, neurobehavioral, antidepressant, and antipyretic activities. Finally, toxicological studies have shown that higher doses of extracts from the plant are safe.

Abstract:Cannabis sativa L. is one of the oldest plants used for medicine because of its numerous natural constituents. From the 1960s to the present, a total of 565 constituents have been reported from Cannabis sativa L., which could be classified into two types: phytocannabinoids and non-cannabinoids. These active constituents are responsible for analgesic, anti-tumor, anti-nausea and vomiting, treatment and brain disease, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, etc. However, the pharmacological mechanism was gradually revealed in the past 50 years, and still need further study. In this paper, we present a general overview of chemical constituents in Cannabis sativa L., biosynthetic pathways of cannabinoids and key enzymes involved, techniques of determining cannabinoids, and the main potential (or established) therapeutic uses of some cannabis-related drugs, to provide reference for pharmacology and therapeutic potential of Cannabis sativa L..

Abstract:Natural products, owing to their chemical diversity, biological activity, and historical success, continue to be a precious source of lead compounds and potential candidates for drug discovery. Siegesbeckia , in particular, presents a promising avenue for drug discovery due to its long history of usage in traditional Chinese medicine and its well-established clinical applications. Diterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, the characteristic metabolites of Siegesbeckia , have consistently attracted considerable attention in related scientific research because of their diverse structures and extensive range of bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Herein, we provide an overview of the phytochemistry, biosynthesis, pharmacological action, as well as clinical applications of Siegesbeckia . This paper will provide a valuable reference for advancing further research and development of Siegesbeckia .

Abstract:The dried flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS), available worldwide, have various applications in both non-medicinal and medicinal fields. The growing global interest in the health benefits of HS is linked to its potential prevention or management of non-communicable diseases. The aim of this research was to find the optimal extraction method that ensures the maximum yield of multiple beneficial bioactive components, such as polyphenols, anthocyanins, vitamin C, β-carotene, antioxidant activity, free radical scavenging activity DPPH and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). To this end, stirring, pulsed electric field, and ultrasound-assisted extraction were evaluated, either alone or in combination. Under optimized extraction conditions, the obtained extract exhibited an elevated total polyphenol content (37.82 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight (dw)), total anthocyanin content (610.42 μg of cyanidin equivalents/g dw), total carotenoids content (921.84 μg of β-carotene equivalents/g dw), and ascorbic acid content (507.44 mg/100 g dw). Remarkably, the extracts exhibited strong antioxidant properties (487.51 μmol of ascorbic acid equivalents (AAE)/g dw and 243.42 μmol AAE/g dw as evidenced by FRAP and DPPH assays, respectively). This research advances the parameters that should be employed to produce the optimal and nutritionally enhanced HS flower extracts, that can be used in the commercial sector.

Abstract:The genus Schisandra belongs to the family Schisandraceae and grows mainly in south-central and southwestern China. Most of the plants in this genus are used for medicine by their fruits, usually for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. In traditional medicine, Schisandra is also used to stop bleeding, relieve pain, and clear heat. Based on this, many domestic and foreign scholars have conducted systematic studies on its chemical composition, and experimental data show that triterpenoid components are the important material basis for the pharmacological effects of this genus. This paper summarizes the relevant literature on triterpenes of the genus Schisandra from 1983 to 2023. All information and research about this paper was obtained from libraries and digital databases (SciFinder, Medline PubMed, Google Scholar, and CNKI, etc.). At present, there are 335 different kinds of triterpenes isolated from the genus Schisandra, including lanostanes, cycloartanes, nortriterpenoids and pentacyclic triterpenoids, which are mostly found in fruits and vine stems. They have been found to possess various activities such as antitumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, nephroprotective and hepatoprotective. This review systematically summarizes the literature on triterpenoid composition, traditional applications, pharmacology, and exploitation of the genus Schisandra . We hope this paper will provide a valuable reference for further research and development of the resources of this genus.
