Abstract:The siloxane-modified polyester resin for powder coatings was synthesized with Z-6018 siloxane intermediate introduced.The structure and morphology of the modified polyester were analyzed by IR,GPC and SEM,and the enrichment of the siloxane component on surface of modified resins was confirmed by electron probe microscopic analysis.The effect of siloxane content in the modified polyester on vitrification point,melting viscosity and contact angle against water as well as the surface tension of the modified resin were investigated.It was found that the surface tension of the modified polyester resin decreased greatly and the weather-resistance performance of the cured film for the corresponding powder coating became better,due to the enrichment of the siloxane containing polyester in the surface layer.As compared with the neat polyester,the surface tension of the modified polyester containing 1% siloxane was decreased from 49.5 to 28.4 mN/m and the gloss retention ratio of the coating film was increased from 81% to 91.3% when exposed to medium ultraviolet wave for 216 hours.But when the siloxane content in the modified resin exceeded 5%,the impact-resistance of the coating film became worse.

Abstract:Two kinds of acrylate-modified polyesters were synthesized, one of the two is semi-crystalline while the other is amorphous, and the UV-curable powder coatings with two components can be made up by mixing these two kinds of polyesters in different ratios. Experiments show that the introduction of semi-crystalline polyester into the coating will substantially improve the direct and reverse impact resistance and the crosshatch adhesion of the cured film while the other general properties of the UV-curable powder coatings remain excellent.
Preparation and characterization of super hydrophobic aerogel coated ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fabric

Abstract:In order to improve the hydrophobicity of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fabric, micro-and nano-scale structures were built by coating the fabric surface based on the lotus effect. Silica aerogel was dispersed in polyvinylidene fluoride for preparing coating solution, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fabric was coated by the solution. The chemical composition and microstructure of the fabric surface were detected by a X-ray photoelectron spectrograph, a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope. The self-cleaning properties of the fabric were mearsured by the ash collection test. The results show that when the mass fraction of PVDF is 12% and that of the silica aerogel is 8%,the maximum contact angle of the coated fabric surface is 157.8°,and the rolling angle is 3°. The coated film surface has micro-scale projections and nano-scale particle projections. Stain on the coated fabric surface can be taken away by water droplets,so the fabric surface has excellent self-cleaning property.

Abstract:The fluoroalkyl-modified polyester (PE-Fn) was synthesized by the reaction of polyester resin (PE) and fluorinated isocyanate, and the structure of the synthesized product was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR) and fluorine nuclear magnetic resonance (F-19-NMR). The water and oil wettability of the cured PE coatings with PE-F-n as additives was investigated by contact angle meter. The results showed that the introduction of an extremely low concentration of PE-F-n into PE led to the increase in contact angle of water and diiodomethane on cured PE coatings, and the decrease in the surface free energy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis showed that the F/C molar ratio in the outer few nanometers was significantly higher than that in the bulk, indicating that the fluoroalkyl groups in PE-F-n had enriched on the coating surface. It was also found that longer fluoroalkyl groups and fluoroalkyl groups with -CF3 at its end had the higher tendency to aggregate on the coating surface. The topological structures of the cured coatings were recorded by an atomic force microscope under tapping mode and the results revealed that there was a strong surface segregation of fluorinated species. Abstract:A kind of polyester diol was synthesized in which para-toluenesulfonic acid was as catalyst,adipic acid and 1 ,3-dipropylene glycol were as raw materials.The results of single-factor test show that the optimum conditions are that the molar ratio of 1,3-propanediol with adipic acid is 1.3,the amount of catalyst is 1%(basing on the total weight of 1,3-dipropylene glycol and adipic acid),reaction temperature is 130 ℃ and the reaction time is 3 h.The re-sults of infrared spectrum and 1 H-NMR spectrum show that the structure of product is same with the expected product.The GPC characterization shows that the relative molecular mass is 1 019 and the polydispersity is 1.073.The crystallinity degree of product is 25.92%.Two kinds of waterborne polyurethanes were prepared by using polyester diol Prepared by the la-boratory and commercial polyester diol,respectively.The experiment results show that the e-lasticity of waterborne polyurethane film prepared by polyester diol Prepared by the labora-tory is better than that prepared by using commericial polyester diol,as well as the handle is softer,the degree of crystallinity is less,but the water resistance is worse.
Durable flame retardant and dip-resistant coating of polyester fabrics by plasma surface treatment and UV-curing

Abstract:Polyester fabric is ubiquitously applied for clothing, furniture and transportation, whereas its flammability with severe dripping often causes secondary hazards. Herein, it is highly imperative to impart excellent flame retardant to polyester fabric. In this work, a coating for polyester fabrics was prepared through a continuous dipping and ultraviolet (UV) curing process, which exhibited high-efficiency flame-retardant, anti-dripping and washing resistance. Firstly, the surface of polyester fabric was pretreated with plasma for providing more grafting sites of polyester fabric. Then, the flame retardant 6-((((2-(acryloyloxy) ethoxy) (oxo)(phenyl)phosphonio) oxy) methyl) dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide (DPEA) and Tri(acryloyloxyethyl) phosphate (TAEP) were successfully synthesized and applied to the coating by UV-curing. In vertical burn test, the damage length of polyester with DPEA and TAEP (PET-D3/T4.5) was reduced from 300 mm of pristine PET to 100 mm with no dripping. In the Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) test, the char residue of PET-D3/T4.5 in nitrogen increased to 26.7 % compared with 9.7 % of pristine polyester. More specifically, the Peak Heat Release Rate (PHRR) and Total Heat Rate (THR) of PET-D3/T4.5 decreased 43.3 % and 22.2 % in the Micro-scale Combustion Calorimetry (MCC) test, which reflected excellent thermal stability and flame retardant properties. In addition, the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of PET-D3/T4.5 only dripped from 24 % to 23.5 % after ten standard laundering cycles, indicating prominent water resistance. Remarkably, Thermogravimetric Analysis-Fourier transform infrared (TG-IR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) have been performed for investigating the mechanism of flame retardant. Thus, a strategy with convenience and economics is proposed, which is of gargantuan significance to the improvement of coating durability through plasma surface treatment and UV-curing.

Abstract:In view of high solvent toxicity and severe pollution of conventional lamination coating,a new water-soluble polyester resin was prepared through using phthalic anhydride,isophthalic acid,neopentyl glycol,trimellitic anhydride and trimethylolpropane as main raw materials.By comparing the fluid viscosity, gel time,film hardness,adhesion,toughness and other factors of paint liquid with various formulations,the effects of different raw materials and promoter on the properties of resin were analyzed and optimum formula of resin was obtained.Results indicate that the comprehensive performance of lamination coating prepared by this water-soluble polyester resin is excellent.

Abstract:The stability of coil coatings towards exterior influences is one of their most important properties as it ensures substrate quality. The weatherability of eight melamine crosslinked polyester coatings was studied in accelerated aging in order to systematically examine the effect of individual monomers including phthalic anhydride and the bio-based monomers succinic acid, sebacic acid, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol and glycerol. Coatings with and without hindered amine light stabilisers were characterised upon degradation through their gloss retention, infrared spectra, film thickness and μ-hardness.A greater susceptibility to radical degradation mechanisms forming new polar chain ends was observed for sebacic acid compared to succinic acid, and for 1,3-propanediol compared to 1,2-propanediol. On the other hand, μ-hardness results suggested that 1,2-propanediol and phthalic anhydride accelerate the formation of new crosslinks during degradation.As radical and hydrolytic bond scission compete with the formation of new crosslinks and each mechanism influences the others, both monomeric composition and overall structure have to be considered to understand the degradation behaviour. The presented findings can be used as a guide by those aiming to increase the bio-based content in coil coatings.

Abstract:Pigments are added into coatings to enhance aesthetical properties and other functionalities, such as UV stability and corrosion resistance. In this study, one-coat epoxy system with bright orange color, UV stability, and corrosion resistance were developed by incorporating diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) into epoxy resins. A set of coating formulations were generated with different pigment volume concentrations. Coatings with different formulations were exposed in UV aging chamber for different time periods. The UV stability of the coatings were evaluated by color difference, gloss retention, and thickness change. Techniques including UV/Vis, SEM, optical microscope, FTIR, and EIS were used to characterize the performance of DPP pigmented epoxy coatings. The one-coat epoxy system retained the two properties of UV stability and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:A kind of polyester modified acrylic functional coating with good adhesion to various metal substrates was prepared, used self made nitrogenated polyester modified acrylic resin as the main film-forming material and the amino resin as cross-linking agent. Moreover, the factors which had influenced the coatings were analyzed, such as amino resin type and ratio, dispersing agent, leveling agent, rheological agent, and organic solvent. The results showed that when choosing amino resin 582 as the crosslinking agent and the ratio of acrylic resin and amino resin was 31 , the performances of the coatings was excellent. When the usage of a kind of BYK dispersant was 0. 5% ~1%, and two kinds of leveling agents were cooperated to use, using 0. 5% ~1. 5%polyamide wax as rheological agent, diluent contain the winter and summer formulation, the comprehensive performances of coatings was the best.

Abstract:A waterborne acrylic topcoat with high luster, high hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance was prepared for outdoor steel structures. The effects of the type of film-forming resin, as well as the variety and dosage of film-forming additives, pigment/filler, and dispersant on coating performance were discussed. It was found that the coating obtained with polyurethane-modified styrene acrylic emulsion B as film-forming resin, 0.4% hydrophobic molecule-modified sodium carboxylate A as dispersant, 14% rutile-type titania C as pigment/filler, and 4% Texanol and 4% DPnB (dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether) as film-forming additives has a luster of 74°, adhesion strength 0-1 grade, pencil hardness H-2H, positive/negative impact strength 40/10 kg·cm, and salt spray corrosion resistance 330 h. The water-based acrylic topcoat can be used for corrosion protection of outdoor steel structures.

Abstract:High performance fibers have distinguished properties such as high tensile strength, good thermal and chemical resistance, dimensional stability, lightweight, and high electrical conductivity. Due to these superior properties, high performance fibers made it to the scene of broad range of applications such as aerospace, automotive, windmill, fiber reinforced composites, high strength tethers, tendons for scientific balloon, tension structures, protective clothing, and marine. Examples of such fibers are Zylon®, Kevlar®, and Vectran®. However, the fibers lose their strength significantly upon exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) and visible light. In this research, UV protective films from extruded low density polyethylene (LDPE) loaded with different content of UV stabilizers (TiO2 nanoparticles and White PE CC®) were investigated. To assess the degree of UV blockage of each extruded protective film, their transmittance to UV and visible (UV-VIS) light was measured. Additionally, Zylon® braids were sheathed with the protective films and the strength of the braids and yarns raveled from braids was measured before and after UV exposure for different number of days. LDPE loaded with White PE CC® and 10 % TiO2 showed the least transmittance to UV-VIS and their yarns and braids exhibited highest strength retention after exposure to artificial UV. Strength retention of braids was higher than that of individual yarns due to weak link effect and braid structure assistant.

Abstract:An acrylic acid-modified epoxy phosphate resin coating was synthesized by a four-step method marked "A-B-C-D", and it was used as an efficient protective layer for steel structures. The coating exhibited good properties, mainly including water resistance (≥240 h), salt spray resistance (≥300 h), surface drying time (≤1 h), and adhesion (≥6.5 MPa).

Abstract:Corrosion of metal products can seriously affect their reliability. The application of coatings is the most widely used method of corrosion protection due to the desire for easy application and low cost. Most of the present corrosion-resistant coatings are solvent coatings. Due to the high content of volatile organic compounds, the use of solvent coatings is restricted. Currently, the corrosion resistance of waterborne coatings is much lower than that of solvent coatings, so research and development of waterborne corrosion-resistant coatings are necessary and valuable. A corrosion-resistant waterborne polyurethane modified epoxy (WPUME) emulsion was prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, transmission electron microscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The particle size, dispersion, and solid content of the emulsion were tested by laser-scattering equipment and a weighing method. Coatings were prepared based on the emulsion, and the properties (i.e., water absorption rate, salt spray resistance, and flexibility) of the coatings were tested by the standard method, respectively. Results show that the synthesis reaction accords well with the molecule design, and the average diameter of the particles in the emulsion is 100 nm approximately. The cured coating, which is coated on tinplate sheets, has good flexibility and can withstand the salt spray test for more than 60 days (i.e., 1,440 h). The emulsion has many potential practical applications in the protection of metal materials.
Construction of Durable Self-Cleaning PDMS Film on Polyester Fabric Surface

Abstract:The superhydrophobic surface can be prepared by two methods; one is by reducing the surface energy, and the other is by constructing a micro-nano rough structure. To achieve high superhydrophobic performance in terms of durability, the firm combination of hydrophobic coating and substrate is particularly important. Here, we use polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a low surface energy monomer, water-borne polyurethane (WPU) as a dispersing aid, and use high-power ultrasound to disperse PDMS in water to make emulsion. The polyester matrix is etched by atmospheric plasma, dipped in PDMS emulsion, dried, and finally baked to induce PDMS on the surface of polyester fiber to cross-link into film. A series of tests on the self-cleaning polyester fabric prepared by this method show that when the concentration of PDMS is 8 g/L and the mass ratio of PDMS to WPU is 20:1, the water contact angle (WCA) reaches the maximum value of 148.2°, which decreases to 141.5° after 200 times of washing and 138.6° after 5000 times of rubbing. Before and after PDMS coating, the tensile strength of polyester fabric increases from 489.4 N to 536.4 N, and the water vapor transmission decreases from 13,535.7 g/(m2·d) to 12,224.3 g/(m2·d). This research is helpful to the large-scale production of self-cleaning polyester fabric. In the future, on the basis of this research, we will add functional powder to endow self-cleaning polyester fabric with higher hydrophobicity and other properties.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of waterborne acrylic-modified epoxy hybrid dispersions were synthesized and successfully used as primers for coil coatings. Epoxy was phosphated to improve its adhesion to the metal substrate. The grafting reaction of acrylate monomers onto the high molecular weight epoxy resins was studied with infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and nuclear magnetic resonance. The structure and resin molecules were found to be as expected and the film had the best performance when the acrylate monomer made up less than 40 wt% of the epoxy resin. Modification of the epoxy with phosphoric acid could increase the adhesion to the metal substrate. Better adhesion was achieved with greater amounts of phosphoric acid. R578 urea resin was found to be the most suitable for crosslinking of the resin in this system, and a paint film based on the resulting resin had excellent overall performance.

Abstract:A series of waterborne acrylic resins were synthesized by using E10p(glycidylester of versatic acid),acrylic monomers,and applied to coil coatings.It was of benefit to the resin stability and film performance,when E10p was charged into the system with the mixed monomers togeter.It was found that E10p dosage would affect the performances of the resin and film.The Mnand Mwdecreased with the increase of the dosage of E10p.Because of the umbrella-shaped structure of E10p,the hydrophobicity of the film could be improved with the increase of E10p amount,thus enhancing the resistance to acid,alkali and artificial aging.

Abstract:Eco-friendly waterborne coatings frequently exhibit poor corrosion resistance, high solvent content, and extended curing times, attributed to the excessive employment of hydrophilic groups and petroleum-derived polyols. In this work, aniline trimer (ACAT) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used as chain extenders. E-44 epoxy resin was subsequently utilized to modify the system and an aniline trimer-modified waterborne polyurethane (AT-WPU) dispersion was prepared and characterized. The chemical structure of the synthesized ACAT was characterized employing 1H NMR, ESI-MS, and FTIR spectroscopy. The structure and coating performance of the AT-WPU dispersion were investigated utilizing FTIR, particle size analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, DSC, TEM, SEM, and electrochemical corrosion testing. The results demonstrate that the aniline trimer-modified waterborne polyurethane dispersion was successfully synthesized. Additionally, the DSC analysis results and thermogravimetric graphs indicate that the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of the coatings increased with the addition of aniline trimer. As the aniline trimer content increased, the hardness and adhesion of the coatings were significantly enhanced. In the electrochemical corrosion assessment, the corrosion current density of AT-WPU-3 attained 7.245 × 10−9 A·cm−2, and the corrosion rate was as low as 0.08 μm·Y−1, indicating excellent corrosion resistance. The present study provides promising practical applications in the domain of metal material protection.

Abstract:Paper derived from lignocellulose has great advantages over plastics as packaging material, nevertheless, the poor water- and oil-resistances of paper-derived products limited their application in high-end field. Herein, novel dimer acid-based waterborne polyurethanes (DWPUs) with different content of dimer acid-based polyester polyol (DG) were prepared and used as water- and oil-resistant coating for paper substrate. The effects of DG contents on water- and oil-resistances, mechanical properties and thermal stability of DWPUs coated papers were systematically investigated. When the content of DG reached up to 7 wt% (based on polyester glycol), the paper coated by DWPU exhibited 88.06% decrease in Cobb 60 value, 8.7 times increase in kit rating compared with uncoated paper. Meanwhile, DWPUs coated papers showed good mechanical properties and thermal stability. These improvements are attributed to the flexible long-alkyl chain, and six-ring structure of DWPUs as well as the continuous and homogeneous DWPU-derived membrane on the surface of paper.
