Abstract:To promote the construction of ecological civilization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Chinese Academy of Engineering launched a major consulting project in 2019 titled “Study on Several Strategic Issues for the Construction of Ecological Civilization in Yangtze River Economic Belt”. Based on the results of the project, this paper summarizes the achievements of ecological civilization construction in Yangtze River Economic Belt in terms of top-level design, green demonstration, ecological protection, and environmental improvement, and then analyzes its main challenges regarding territorial development, industrial layout, river–lake relationship, ecological security, energy development, and environmental risks. Based on the concept of a life community of mountains,rivers, forests, farmland, lakes, grass, and sand, we propose several strategic suggestions focusing on ecological space management and control, water ecosystem health, green and high-quality development, ecological protection and restoration, ecological agriculture and forestry development, ecological product value realization, and ecolog¬ical civilization governance system.

Abstract:Ecological slope protection is a new technique to protect ecological environment using the method of living plant coverage slope and the dynamic integration methods of living plants and non-living materials instead of pure engineering protection.Ecological slope protection can protect water resources and prevent soil erosion,reinforce side slope and improve anti-erosion ability of side slope surface,moreover,it is the most economic protection form.In abroad,as early as 1920s,the study on ecological slope protection was started,thus,a lot of successful experience can be learned;at home,the study developed overall with the construction of high class road since 1990s and achieved some results.In general,the study mainly focused on soil and water conservation at home,but less on engineering mechanics effects of slope plant root system and the combined study of vegetation protection and engineering protection,moreover,the study on theoretical study was lagging far behind engineering practice.In plants selection,import lawn plants were usually used and the application of native species was less.Our country is the most bamboo plant species and the earliest utilization country,bamboo plants mainly grow in mountainous regions and sloping fields,its root system is developed and soil conservation ability is stronger,moreover,the function of reinforcing side slope surface is greater.Finally,the greater significance of the application of bamboo plants in ecological slope protection is discussed.

Abstract:As the protection of the environment gains more public attention in China, a large number of engineering slopes, which are not conducive to the growth of vegetation and are prone to natural disasters caused by constructions, are in urgent need of restoration. Herein, we explain the theoretical basis for the ecological restoration of engineering slopes and introduce the technologies commonly used in this regard, including soil improvement, bioremediation, and ecological slope protection. The benefits and evaluation of the impact of ecological restoration of engineering slopes are also detailed. Finally, we discuss the current problems in ecological restoration and put forward some future research prospects. By summarizing the existing techniques and evaluation systems for ecological restoration, this study provides a reference for its implementation and evaluation, contributing to the long-term, stable, and rapid development of ecological restoration of engineering slopes.

Abstract:River banks are the important transitional regions for exchange of substance,energy,and information between river and terrestrial ecosystem.Efficiency of urban river can be brought into the function by traditional slope protection,such as releasing flood,draining water-logged and water and soil conservation,etc.,but harmful impacts on environment.Ecological embankment can not only have the efficiency of traditional slope protection,but also incorporate the contents in many aspects,such as urban landscape and ecology,and its construction has become a key point of urban river restoration.The characteristics of urban river and the existing problems of its embankment construction in the view of ecological water conservation first are analyzed.And by making reference to the foreign and chinese traditional river renovation programs,some methods for ecological embankment construction in order to suggest improvements in the urban river restoration are presented.
Assessment of the Carbon Emission Reduction Effects of Ecological River Slope Construction in China

Abstract:Nearly 60% of river slopes in developed countries are treated with ecological slope protection technologies. Ecological river revetment has become a main focus in slope protection development projects. At present, the academic research on carbon emission reduction focuses on petroleum exploitation, agricultural production, transportation and residential life, with minor consideration of carbon emissions from river slope protection projects. This study assesses the carbon emissions from structural slope and ecological slope riverbeds, the impact of carbon emissions from ecological slopes on climate in China and analyses the contribution of ecological slope protection to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Results show that ecological slopes can reduce carbon emissions significantly, by 93.12% compared to structural slopes, with construction costs also reduced by 37%. And river ecological slope protection technologies will provide an important contribution to the reduction of China's carbon emissions.

Abstract:Ecological riverbank is a form of the riverbanks that combines the technology of ecological engineering and civil engineering. It plays an important role in the slope protection and the sustainable development of river ecosystems. Based on a review of the developing backgrounds and current situation of ecological embankment at home and abroad, this paper introduces the conception and connotation of the ecological riverbank. According to the application conditions and function characteristics, the representative types of ecological riverbanks are classified and their related techniques, characteristics and application scope are described as well. The research methods for ecological riverbank are systematically summarized based on the domestic and overseas literatures. Combined with the present situation, the problems existing in the application of ecological riverbank engineering are discussed. It is proposed that the design of ecological riverbank should be reasonably applied corresponding to specific environmental features and engineering demand so that it can optimize both eco-environmental effectiveness and slope protection, and that several essential directions such as the ecosystem service function, standardized evaluation system and sustainable utilization and management of ecological riverbank should be deserving of further research and exploration.

Abstract:Abstract Slope protection has always been a major concern in highway construction and later operation. Ecological protection technology is widely used in highway slope, which takes into account functions of protection, ecology, and landscape. Ecological protection technology is mainly to improve the stability of the slope through the combination of supporting structure and plants, and vegetation restoration can reduce the negative impact of highway construction. In this paper, the latest research progress of ecological protection technology was first reviewed to identify the main construction process and types, which revealed the protection mechanism of ecological protection technology. The comprehensive benefits of ecological slope protection technology were analysed from the aspects of air, water circulation, landscape and biodiversity. It has found that ecological protection technology of highway slope mainly forms the atmosphere-plant-soil system. Ecological protection technology of highway slope improved the stability of the slope through the supporting structure and the anchoring effect of plant roots. And the restoration of the surface vegetation on the slope promoted the photosynthesis and transpiration of plants and purifies the air quality along the highway. Ecological protection technology of highway slope could quickly restore the ecological balance, overall landscape and biodiversity of the region.

Experimental Research on Erosion Characteristics of Ecological Slopes under the Scouring of Non-Directional Inflow

Abstract:Considering environmental sustainability, ecological embankments are often adopted in rivers, which benefit both the erosion resistance and the ecological balance of the bank. In this paper, the effectiveness of different types of dominant grass species in ecological slope protection and their impact mechanisms, as well as the impact of non-directional inflow on erosion characteristics, were investigated. Based on the principle of similarity theory in hydraulic modeling and the characteristics of flood erosion in riverbanks, a test model system for hydraulic ecological simulation was designed, including a vegetation bank slope and channels. Three types of dominant grass species were selected, and 12 series of erosion experiments were conducted in the grassed slope of the test model. Three types of root–soil composites and a reference plain soil were involved in the tests, and soil mechanical indicators such as shear strength were collected. Experimental results show that root–soil composite is a special elastic–plastic material, which provides additional cohesive force to the soil due to its root consolidation and reinforcement effects, Δc. The shear strength index reflecting soil cohesion was increased by 15% to 20%. The primary factor affecting slope erosion is the flushing velocity, and both the average erosion depth and the unit soil erosion loss present an exponential function with respect to this factor, while presenting a linear function with the angle of incoming flow. Compared with the plain soil slope, the ecological slope could decrease erosion significantly. The sand loss of the ecological slope is only 50~60% that of the plain soil slope as the flushing velocity is 3–4 m s−1. In vertical flushing, the sand loss in the plain soil slope is 1.73–2.43 times that of the ecological slope. This research might provide technical support for the anti-scourability design of the ecological embankment.

Abstract:For a long time, the channel slope protection had been focused on its stability and flood-control ability.Little was considered about its serious damage to the river ecosystem and the people’s demand of beautiful landscape along the water system in city.The reasons of channel slope collapse and the ecological slope protection technology’s concept were discussed.The pattern of ecological slope protection, the principles of ecological slope planning and the primary materials and methods of ecological slope protection presently were introduced. As different part of the channel had different ecological function, the different measures of ecological slope protection technology should be chosen.They were used not only to satisfy the demand of stability and security to the channel slope protection, but also to improve the riparian ecosystem’s function.

Abstract:Traditional ecological restoration technology has many challenges in dealing with the greening of steep rock slopes, especially in the case of serious soil erosion. In order to overcome these problems, this study aims to organically combine the traditional protection and reinforcement technology with the new vegetation restoration technology, and put forward a new ecological protection technology of composite vegetation concrete to realize the comprehensive protection and ecological restoration of rocky slopes. In this paper, by analyzing the mechanism and existing problems of ecological protection of rocky slopes, the design requirements of composite vegetation concrete are studied in detail, and the related construction technology is expounded. In the experiment, the vegetation coverage and incidence were systematically analyzed, and the results showed that some samples showed high vegetation coverage and low incidence. Comprehensive consideration shows that the average vegetation coverage rate is 93.7%, and the average incidence rate is only 5.21%, which all meet the corresponding standards. The composite vegetation concrete technology has a wide application prospect in stone slope protection, which significantly improves the slope vegetation coverage and compressive strength, and effectively promotes the slope greening and ecological sustainable development. Through this study, we aim to convey to readers that the comprehensive method of combining traditional and innovative technologies can achieve encouraging results in solving the problem of ecological restoration of steep rock slopes, and provide useful reference for engineering practice in similar environments.

Abstract:Eco-slope protection is a new-type engineering technology different from traditional slope protection.Besides traditional functions of levees,it lays more emphasis on the environmental functions of engineering.So it is used more widely in some economically developed areas,.In this paper,by investigating vegetation communities in different types of eco-concrete areas,and using a series of biological diversity indices to evaluate the vegetation effects of different design areas.The results show that Phalaris arundinacea,Oxalis rubra,Lolium perenn and Festuca arundinacea are all planted in the hemisphere-shaped,grid-shaped and stone-shaped concrete respectively.Three years later,despite Lolium perenn and Festuca arundinacea disappeared,on the whole,the conditions of vegetation were better,while the vegetation in the hemisphere-shaped eco-concrete was best with 13 as its richness,2.04 as diversity indices of species,1 023.5 g/m2 of biomass(dry),97.8% of coverage,which indicated the higher stability of this community.In other eco-concrete areas with no plants cultivation,despite some local invasive species,the abundance of species and biological diversity were very low,showed vulnerable communities.Therefore,for Zhenjiang waterfront levee slope protection projects,selected Phalaris arundinacea and Oxalis rubra and planted in hemisphere-shaped eco-concrete are one of the best schemes.

Abstract:In China,the theory on ecological protection,is mainly discussed about the ecological benefit,there is a limited research on the modeling mechanism of material,vegetation mechanism and slope protection mechanism far behind the practical application.A software CHASM is used to analyze the influence of vegetation types,rainfall,and strength of soil on the stability of ecological slope for investigating the mechanism of ecological slope.The safety factors of slope are different depending on the types of vegetation,grass planting on the slope is more effective than tree planting.Especially in slope when the combined grass planting and tree planting gives the best result.The rainfall of different intensity will affect the slope stability variously.When rainfall action doesn't exceed the adjustment capacity of vegetation,the factor of safety increases,however,reduces significantly when the rainfall exceeds the adjustment capacity.Vegetation has the similar effect on the slopes with different materials.

Abstract:Vegetation slope protection is the most important eco-protection method.Besides some features such as releasing flood,drainage,water and soil conservation,there are certain effects of landscape and ecological restoration,for preventing N,P,heavy metals and other chemicals from polluting rivers.Main application of vegetation slope protection currently comprised of construction method,application scope and technical features as well as mechanism and choice of vegetation were introduced.Because of lack of quantitative research and benefit analysis after completion of vegetation slope,it does not get better management and post-slope maintenance and construction.In order to manage vegetation slope protection much better and provide theoretical basis and evaluation criteria of slope construction,some evaluation methods for the slope were proposed,including slope stability,soil and water conservation,purifying capacity and biological diversity.

Abstract:River embankment is an ecotone which plays important roles in material exchange, energy flow and biological migration between the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and brings great influence on aquatic and surrounding environments, and provides continuous and stable ecological service functions for human beings as well. From the perspective of ecological engineering, this paper summarized and analyzed classification and characteristics of ecological embankments. General technical process of ecological embankment construction was presented; six aspects of ecological design including construction pattern, service function, landscape aesthetics, industrial development, constructing project and sustainable management were discussed. Moreover, seven types of ecological service functions of river embankments were analyzed and some related evaluation methods were introduced by integrating the common assessment approaches for ecosystem service functions.

Abstract:Based on the environmental and ecological protection idea, a new bioengineering ecological slope protection technology-geo-grid flexible retaining wall was put forward. In this paper, combining with the engineering practices in highway slope of Ji-Lai Expressway, the design methods and construction requirement of geo-grid flexible retaining wall were given and the effect of its application was studied. By considering the geo-grid, fix anchor and filling soil as an integral structure, the formula for slip force and total anti-slide forces of geo-grid on protection slope is derived, and an analysis method of safety factor of geo-grid protection system is given. It can be concluded that the new type of flexible retaining wall has satisfied the requirement of stability and ecological environment of highways. This new flexible ecological retaining wall will have wide application in highway slope engineering.

Abstract:Abstract Water conservancy projects are one of the main sources of carbon emissions. Nearly 60% of river revetments in developed countries are treated with ecological slope protection technologies to reduce carbon emissions. Ecological river revetment has been widely adopted as a measure for slope protection. Presently, the study on carbon emission reduction mainly focuses on agricultural production, petroleum exploitation, residential life, and transportation. No significant research has been made on the effects of river revetment protection projects on carbon emissions. This study evaluates the carbon emissions from structural and ecological revetments, and its impact on China's climate. Results show that the ecological revetment can reduce carbon emissions significantly, by 93% as compared to the structural revetment. Moreover, the construction cost of an ecological slope is 37% cheaper than that of a structural slope. This research proves that ecological river slope protection technologies are vital for reducing China's carbon emission.
