Abstract:Anaphora refers to a phenomenon in which a linguistic element obtains its meaning via a previously existing unit or meaning. The study of anaphoric processing has always been one of the foci in cognitive science. The relevant ERP studies demonstrate that the understanding of anaphoric expression complies more with the parallel model of language processing, whose different stages are all affected and restricted by such factors as semantics, pragmatics, the frequency of antecedent, and the different forms of anaphora. Therefore, the future research should go deep into some issues like the Nref Effect, the null anaphor, the interaction of various factors in anaphoric processing, and the anaphora in Chinese.

Abstract:Associative anaphora refers to a discourse operation that links a definite determiner phrase (DP) to an antecedent that acts as an indirect referent of the definite DP. For example, in the sequence ‘I bought a laptop. The keyboard was black’, the definite DP ‘the keyboard’ is linked to ‘a laptop’, meaning ‘the keyboard of the laptop’. The development of children’s knowledge of associative anaphora has long been investigated in child language research, as it provides a unique window into the interaction between linguistic and nonlinguistic cognitive abilities. However, most prior research focused on Indo-European languages without looking at typologically distinct languages. To fill the gap, this study investigated children’s knowledge of associative anaphora in Mandarin Chinese, a typologically distinct language, thus allowing for a better cross-linguistic understanding of the phenomenon. Ninety-one 3- to 5-year-olds were investigated using a truth-value judgment task. The findings were that Mandarin-speaking children exhibited a similar developmental trajectory and were impacted by the same cognitive factors as observed in children speaking Indo-European languages. The implications of the findings were then discussed in relation to the role of processing factors and language-specific properties.

Abstract:In recent years,the study of cognitive linguistic has witnessed great progress in theoretical deduction and descriptive analysis.Although becoming an important theory of natural language study and analysis,it needs not only deeply case study but also a more profound understanding of its ontology.This article analyzes and comments on its theoretical guidance and development in the view of disciplinary definition,cognitive attribute and development trend.Binding the contents and methods of cognitive linguistic,the article also introduces its theoretical features.Currently,cognitive linguistic,as a dynamic research framework,is still far from being a stable theoretical system.

Abstract:The idea of linguistic relativity has given rise to much controversy once it was proposed during 1930s and 1940s. There have been rare empirical studies in spite of the great concern and much comment on it, which can rarely lead to convincing conclusions. Since 1980s and 1990s interest in the hypothesis has been revived with the focus on empirical assessment and scientific methods, which has resulted in some distinguished progress. Till now, however, there has been rare serious research concerned in China and most of the reviews related are based on second-hand materials. The article is meant to provide some background knowledge for related research on Chinese by a survey of the empirical studies in the west in recent years.

Abstract:Anaphora is one of the focuses in modern linguistics,which is analyzed from multiple perspectives.Noam Chomsky puts forward Government and Binding Theory to make an analysis of anaphora from syntactic and semantic perspective,while functional grammar and other approaches do it from the textual angle.Anaphora contributes a great deal to cohesion and coherence of discourse.In this paper,we briefly survey the current study of anaphora and find that frame theory in cognitive linguistics can construe better associative anaphora as well as coherence.

Abstract:Animacy which is an extra-linguistic concept has a general restriction on the internal sys-tem of language.This paper gives a clarification of the implications of animacy and its related con-cepts,and summarizes its hierarchal categories and effects.It also gives a summary review of the re-searches on the animacy hierarchy reflected in grammar in terms of the restrictions of the morphologi-cal and syntactic systems.It focuses on how the features of animacy restrict the Chinese syntax and its psychological reality in language processing,and analyzes the possible causes of animacy effects in Chinese by using the results of the previous human cognitive and neurobiological researches,which should help broaden the perspective of Chinese syntactic studies.

Abstract:At this stage, the study of Chinese characters is undergoing a transformation of modern applications and technology, and research in this field is both deeply rooted in the traditional Chinese study of script and flourishing with new vitality. This paper analyses the five major components of Chinese character research, namely, the study of archaic characters, the study of the phonology, morphology and meaning of Chinese characters, the study of the application of Chinese characters in the computer field, the study of the cognitive processing of Chinese characters, and the study of Chinese character teaching, and the three methods of Chinese character research, namely, exegetical examination, corpus database and empirical research methods. This paper summarizes the literature on Chinese character research, analyses the trends in Chinese character research, and summarizes the review and outlook of Chinese character research in the past thirty years.
The influence of topic structure and verb-based implicit causality on pronoun resolution in Mandarin Chinese: Evidence from sentence production and comprehension

Abstract:Most previous studies concerning anaphora resolution have either been unable to integrate syntactic and semantic constraints in discussion, or failed to take both comprehension and production into consideration. By using a written completion test and two sentence acceptability tests, this study investigates how the topic status of the antecedent candidates and the verb-based implicit causality exert their influence on the interpretation of anaphora in Mandarin Chinese. The results reveal that:(1) antecedents in the topic position have more opportunities to be referred to than those in the nontopic position;(2) forward biased verbs exert more influence on the determination of pronoun's referents than backward biased verbs do; and (3) the influence of topic structure and verb semantics on pronoun resolution is modulated by the modality of the task adopted.

Abstract:This article briefly reviews studies on the Mandarin resultative V-R construction,which have been carried out within the generative framework.The focus is on this construction's origin,argument realization,interpretation and head.The review begins with studies on the origin,then proceeds to an intensive examination of research conducted from the perspective of semantics,syntax,lexical relational structure and event structure,and finally concludes with a discussion of the consensus on the studies reviewed in this article and those important issues that remain to be further explored.

Abstract:There are a large number of researches on Chinese prepositions,which are studied from different and diverse perspectives. The research of domestic Chinese prepositions have experienced three paradigms,such as exegetics vision,the vision of traditional grammar theory and modern grammatical theory. Researches on single preposition grammarticalization or typological study are very common abroad. Currently,there are few achievements of a systematic study about Chinese preposition. So prepositional system and its evolution should be further studied and discussed.

Study on Meta-Anaphoric Resolution in Chinese Discourse Understanding

Abstract:Anaphoric resolution is a hot field in computational linguistics. According to the research, it is found that a kind of anaphora, meta-anaphora, which represents the form of sentence, paragraph or discourse (not the subject or object of the sentence), plays an important role in discourse. So meta-anaphoric resolution affects the computer's ability of discourse understanding. This paper focuses on the meta-anaphoric resolution. A new concept called Elementary Event focus (EE_focus) is introduced. And some meta-anaphoric resolution algorithms based on the concept are designed. The algorithms examined by a large Chinese natural language corpus. The experimental results show that the EE_focus set can do good job in meta-anaphoric resolution. The work enriches the theory of discourse's structural representation. It is important in confirming the cohesion and coherence of the Chinese discourses.

Abstract:Applied Linguistics,as an important platform of showing language application and research in China,has witnessed 20 years of development.This paper conducts a panoramic review by analyzing more than 1000 articles published in Applied Linguistics.It is shown that Chinese language study is of extensive range with clear directions.Researchers give the priority to academic construction,with the highlight of collective research.The application of field study and corpus speeds up the development of empirical and quantitative research.From experience to the promotion of empirical study,the theoretical consciousness of researchers is running through with strengthened academic norms.Case studies,the orientation towards "problem solving" and the improvement of quality and quantity regarding academic review are supposed to be strengthened in the future.

Abstract:Previous theoretical and empirical studies on meta-discourse are reviewed in detail in this paper. First, the definitions, functions and classifications of meta-discourse are scrutinized; then salient differing theoretical approaches to meta-discourse are described. Major empirical studies on the use of meta-discourse markers are also examined critically. The paper suggests that future research with a longitudinal methodology stands in dire need and that how Chinese learners of English learn meta-discourse markers and how to construct a theoretical framework to interpret the factors that affect their use of meta-discourse markers remain an imperative in the field.
A Contrastive Study of Anaphoric Substitute in English and Chinese

Abstract:This paper presents a comparative analysis of the anaphoric functions of substitution in English and Chinese and reveals that English substitution is very apparent and has the fixed forms.Chinese does not have the fixed forms and it is used much less widely than that in English.Instead,Chinese has much more use of repetition and ellipsis.The study is of theoretical significance as well as practical value in translation and foreign language teaching and learning.
