Crisis Management: Major Theoretical Approaches and Their Application

Abstract:This article offers a synergetic view of the literature on crisis management.Three ontological understandings of crisis are teased out,i.e.crisis as the outcome of insufficient infrastructure,crisis as the outcome of system failure of business organizations,crisis as the outcome of rhetorical activities.In accordance,researchers are found to focus on business organizations' macro environment,or their internal environment,or discourse between business organizations and their external stakeholders.Major concern for each focus is the social context of crisis,the cause,consequence,caution and coping of crisis,and crisis communication respectively.This article explains and evaluates the major theoretical perspectives sharing the same ontological position.
