Abstract:During the synthesis of beta-chloro-alpha-phenylethanols by reduction of alpha-chloroacetophenones with sodium borohydride, many byproducts were produced unavoidably at relatively high temperature. Metal chlorides such as calcium, lanthanum, magnesium, manganese and zinc chloride could efficiently restrain side reactions, and so the product was obtained in high yield.

Abstract:Acridine derivatives have exhibited great application prospects in organic photovoltaic devices. An efficient and atomically economical synthetic method was developed for the production of acridines from anthranils using arylboronic acids. This protocol features no catalysts, good functional group tolerance, and operational simplicity. This catalyst-free process afforded various acridines in moderate to good yields, providing an efficient platform for the investigation of untapped reactions at high temperatures.

Abstract:Simple, eco-friendly, non-toxic novel aluminum catalyst was synthesised for the chemoselective reduction of α,β-unsaturated ketones. A wide range of ketones have been achieved with excellent yields, mild conditions, and a lower catalyst loading. Furthermore, this unprecedented method allowed for the stereoselective reduction of the natural ketones.

Abstract:Iron chloride has been found to be an efficient catalyst for the disproportionation of allylic alcohols, which provides a convenient method for selective transformation of allylic alcohols to alkenes and alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Furthermore, this catalytic system is also effective for highly selective allylic reduction of allylic alcohols, allylic ethers, and allylic acetates with benzyl alcohol under neutral and convenient reaction conditions.

Abstract:An unprecedented Ir(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/amination/annulation of 2-phenyloxazoles with anthranils for the highly selective preparation of acridone derivatives in one-pot under controlled conditions is reported. This protocol is characterized by atom economy and high regioselectivity. A wide range of anthranils with 2-phenyloxazoles were well tolerated and afforded the desired products in moderate to good yields, in which the anthranil serves as a convenient amination reagent.

Abstract:2-Ethylanthraquinone is frequently used for producing bulk consuming chemicals. However, the synthesis of 2-ethylanthraquinone is still restricted by expensive raw materials, complex preparation process and poor-cycling catalyst. Herein, a one-pot method is developed to synthesize 2-ethylanthraquinone using phthalic anhydride and ethylbenzene as feedstock by combination of acylation and dehydration over a Sc-modified Hβ catalyst. Sc-modified Hβ was prepared via impregnation and catalyzed conversion of phthalic anhydride about 58.8% and 2-ethylanthraquinone selectivity up to 78.5% which is better than the results by other metals-modified Hβ zeolites. By adjusting Sc loading amount in Hβ, more acids are created especially strong Lewis acid and an appropriate synergistic effect of Lewis/Bronsted acids is obtained for cascade reactions of acylation and dehydration. Then, the reaction conditions were investigated and the catalyst can be reused in 4 runs. This work provides a green and simple way for 2-ethylanthraquinone synthesis.

Abstract:A series of MoW-doped MCM-41 catalysts were prepared for the selective oxidation of anthracene to high value-added anthraquinone. Although anthraquinone production has been progressively industrialized, the anthracene oxidation still faces the problems of poor solubility of reactants and low anthracene conversion, particularly when employing supported catalysts in solution media. We herein reported a challenging but crucial method for anthraquinone production by using anthracene, H2O2 and Mo1W2-MCM-41 catalyst in HOAc under mild reaction conditions. In addition, experimental and theoretical results revealed that the synergistic effect between Mo, W and MCM-41 species contributes to an enchanced cataltic activity with conversion up to 97.6 %. The highly active H2O2-MCM-41 catalyst can be used for several cycles without obvious activity loss and serve as a promising candidate for anthraquinone as well as its derivatives production, making it a good alternative for various oxidation reactions.

Abstract:The reduction of ketones or alkenes is an attractive and challenging task in organic chemistry and has widespread applications in the production of fine chemicals, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, vitamins and functional materials. Classical reduction methods usually require the use of potentially dangerous hydrogen and the reaction under high temperature and pressure conditions, so environmentally friendly, economical, simple and safe reduction methods are urgently needed. This paper innovatively reports a method for the electrochemical reduction of diarylketones or aryl alkenes in a mixed solvent system of CH3CN/THF. The reaction proceeds smoothly, and the corresponding products are obtained in high yields. The mechanistic study shows that the reaction is a free radical reaction, and reveals the necessity of CH3CN solvent, which plays the three roles of solvent, proton donors and reactant at the same time. Furthermore, the high yield of the gram‐scale experiment successfully confirmed the potential industrial application of this electrochemical method.

Abstract:Iron-catalyzed direct reduction of allylic halides with benzylic alcohol was achieved, providing a new, simple, and efficient method for conducting highly regioselective hydrodehalogenation. This method not only features a readily available reductant, an inexpensive catalyst, simple manipulation, and good tolerance of functional groups including nitriles, nitro, esters, and methoxyl groups, it also has mild reaction conditions and shows complete regioselectivity in that only halides sited at the allylic position are reduced. Alternatively, this method can be applied in the selective transformation of benzylic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes without overoxidation to carboxylic acids.

Abstract:A photoredox-catalysed chlorination of quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones was developed by using CHCl3 as a chlorine source, thus affording various 3-chloroquinoxalin-2(1H)-ones in moderate to high yields. This protocol is characterized by mild reaction conditions, excellent regioselectivity, and readily available chlorination agent. Considering the operational simplicity and low cost of this chlorination approach, this developed method offers an innovative pathway for rapid incorporation of chlorine functionality into heteroarenes, and will inspire broader exploitation of new chlorination strategies.

Abstract:Tandem Friedel–Crafts acylation and alkylation of arenes with 2-alkenoyl chlorides were investigated under the catalysis of Lewis acids. The cascade reaction affords dihydrochalcones in good yields accompanying 1-indanone derivatives in some cases, in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride. The scope, limitation, and mechanism of the tandem reaction were also explored. The intermolecular Friedel–Crafts alkylation for the formation of dihydrochalcones is more favorable than the intramolecular one for the generation of 1-indanones in the tandem reaction due to a stable six-membered ring transition state. The sequent process was further studied by the DFT computations at the M06-2X/6-31G(d) level, which are in great agreement with the experimental observation and support the proposed mechanism. The current method provides a convenient and economic method to synthesis of dihydrochalcones.
