Abstract:A few promising composite transmission lines (microstrip+CPW, shielded microstrip+CPW and microstrip+asymmetric CPW) are proposed for the microwave packaging of the high speed optoelectronic devices in the paper. Using boundary element method, the characteristic impedance was calculated for the lines. Several sets of theoretical curves are given for the engineering design. The experimental results are discussed.

Abstract:The attenuation and slow-wave characteristics in an inverted embedded metal-insulator-semiconductor (IEM-MIS) microstrip line are investigated in this paper, based on the extracted frequency-dependent distributed parameters, that is, per-unit-length series resistance and inductance, shunt capacitance, and conductance of the structure. Parametric studies are performed to show the combined effects of different parameters, such as strip thickness, width, conductivity, embedding depth, and. silicon conductivity and its thickness, on the mode attenuation constant and slow-wave factor (SWF). Such V-shaped microstrip lines are assumed to be fabricated on a single-layer isotropic substrate. Abstract:Using the extended Heinrich equations for computing the per-unit-length resistance and inductance of coplanar waveguides (CPWs), we have studied the wide-band impedance characteristics of various finite-ground uniform and stepped CPWs. Finite-ground CPWs are frequently used in the design of CPW-based microwave and millimeter-wave devices. For various physical parameters, in particular the metallization thickness and its conductivity, we examined both resistance and inductance over a wide frequency range. Our work can serve as a basis for further study of the energy dissipation of the devices in the excitation of a high-power pulse.

Abstract:In this paper, the microwave characteristics of a FeTaN lamination stack are studied with a shorted microstrip line method. The FeTaN lamination stack was fabricated by gluing 54 layers of FeTaN units with epoxy together. The FeTaN units were deposited on both sides of an 8 μm polyethylene terephthate (Mylar) film as the substrate by rf magnetron sputtering. On each side of the Mylar substrate, three 100-nm FeTaN layers are laminated with two 8 nm Al2O3 layers. The complex permeability of FeTaN lamination stack is calculated by the scattering parameters using the shorted load transmission line model based on the quasi-transverse-electromagnetic approximation. A full wave analysis combined with an optimization process is employed to determine the accurate effective permeability values. The optimized complex permeability data can be used for the microwave filter design.

Abstract:This paper determines the capacitance, inductance, and characteristic impedance of rectangular lines by the method of conformal transformation. In practical applications, such lines may be used as transmission links of RF energy, as impedance-transforming sections, or as components in electron tubes. Formulas are given for the calculation of the parameters of rectangular lines having the following characteristics: 1) The inner conductor may have varying thickness compared with the depth of the outer conductor. 2) The axes of the conductors may coincide or may be displaced with respect to each other. 3) The edges of the inner conductor may be rounded to lessen the electrical stress occurring at sharp corners. Excellent agreement has been obtained between the calculated results and those found by use of the relaxation method, by direct measurement of models, and by electrolytic tank measurement.

Abstract:A conformal transformation for the analysis of a transmission line consisting of a cylindrical conductor placed opposite a slit in an infinite flat plate is developed. The approximate and exact expressions in closed- form of the characteristic impedance for the proposed line based on assuming only a quasi-TEM mode propagating in the line are as exact as the conventional one cited.

Abstract:Based on the wafer level packaging technology, different widths and lengths of the strip line was designed, fabricate and measured. Meanwhile, to characterize the high frequency characteristics of the strip line, the skin effect has been considered to the transmission line theory equivalent circuit model. The proposed model is in good agreement with the measured data of the strip line in the frequency range of 10 GHz – 110 GHz. The proposed model can effectively support the co-simulation of the active device model and passive device model in heterogeneous integrated package, accelerate the optimization speed of circuit design iteration, and help reduce the time cost of the EM simulation of layout.
On-Chip Impedance-Optimized Microstrip Transmission Line For Multi-Band And Ultra-Wide-Band Microwave Applications

Abstract:This paper presents a novel on-chip passive device that provides a more constant characteristic impedance over a wide frequency band compared to conventional microstrip transmission lines. This device is designed for applications whose frequencies span the range of the microwave frequency region from 1 GHz to 30 GHz up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) frequency bands greater than 30 GHz. The novel, impedance-optimized, microstrip transmission line presented is well suited to reduce the effects of characteristic impedance mismatch in high-performance on-chip analog circuits where it is desirable for the transmission line characteristic impedance to remain relatively constant in all operating frequency bands. This new device utilizes the frequency-dependent nature of the silicon substrate capacitance to reduce variation in transmission line characteristic impedance with frequency. Using specially designed metal-to-silicon substrate capacitance structures designed in "windows" that perforate a bottom grounded microstrip return line to provide additional capacitance to the signal path at lower frequencies which compensates for the higher DC inductance of the thick metal signal lines at low frequencies caused by the resistance/inductance skin-effect. The proposed structure is ideal for multi-band and ultra-wide band applications, for example, analog circuits that operate in both the WCDMA range (2.11-2.17 GHz) and also in the MMW range (f > 30 GHz). An impedance-optimized transmission line is designed and studied in a 130 nm BiCMOS technology. The proposed device exhibits significantly improved characteristic impedance behavior versus frequency compared to conventional microstrip lines and can be implemented in any silicon-based analog technology.

Abstract:After the electromagnetic fields in a line are discussed, conformal mapping and the singular integral-equation technique are used to derive the expression Sol the characteristic impedance of a rectangular coaxial cone transmission line with an offset inner conductor (RCCTLO). Simple and very accurate formulas, based on only the spherical TEM mode propagating, for the capacitance and characteristic impedance are found in terms of complete elliptic integrals. Abstract:It has been proved that a subwavelength periodic microstrip structure can be used to suppress crosstalk between two adjacent microstrip lines and such a microstrip structure can be widely used in the application of high-speed circuit systems. To further increase the accuracy of the equivalent circuit model of the subwavelength periodic microstrip line (SPML), we focus our attention on a single unit cell with the periodic structure, which is divided into several sub-regions, and the circuit parameters in each sub-region are analysed for setting up a complete circuit model of the unit cells. Then the details of the interaction between each sub-region and the electromagnetic field are clearly indicated. The S $S$-parameters of the circuit model accord well with full-wave simulation results, showing a maximum deviation of 0.03973 dB for S-21 and 0.1211 dB for S-11 below 15 GHz. For the first time, we also study the frequency-dependence of the mutual capacitance and the mutual inductance for analysing the coupling effect between an SPML and a conventional microstrip line (CML). The instantaneous impedance obtained by the full-wave simulation of the SPML is consistent well with the experimental results.
An Alternating High‐low Impedance Common‐mode Filter for Differential Striplines

Abstract:The conventional quarter/half-wavelength common-mode filter (CMF) cannot work well for a differential stripline when there is no ground via. A new and effective via-free CMF design for the differential striplines is proposed in this study. An alternating high-low impedance structure is developed to increase the coupling between the stripline and the CMF, thus achieving a good filtering effect. A cascaded CMF design is further studied to enhance the stopband without deterioration of the differential signals. Both simulation and measurement results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed high-low impedance CMF. The significant advantage of the proposed CMF is its compactness and simplicity, which has almost no impact on the original layout of differential striplines.

Abstract:In this article, a compact modeling for the average power handling capabilities (APHCs) of symmetric and asymmetric striplines is investigated. According to the principle of conformal mapping technique, the striplines are transformed into parallel-plate rectangular structures. The thermal resistances of the striplines are calculated straightforwardly by this means. The temperature rises and APHCs of the striplines are obtained through the equivalent thermal circuits, where different thermal boundaries, as well as the impact of temperature-dependent resistivity of the metal strip, are taken into account. The validity of the equivalent thermal circuit is demonstrated through electrothermal co-simulation of striplines with different substrates and geometries. The results of the proposed model are in good agreement with those obtained by the commercial software.

Abstract:Matching networks for ultra-high frequency chips are susceptible, and accurate extraction of passive devices parameters is essential. For on-chip transmission lines, the authors present a precise method of extracting transmission line propagation constant from two transmission line measurement structures with different lengths. After obtaining the propagation constant based on this method, to get the transmission line's characteristic impedance, this paper conducts a Y-Z model analysis of the signal pad and gives mathematical expressions. This approximation method can obtain the characteristic impedance of the transmission line without solving the signal pad's model parameters. The propagation constant and characteristic impedance derived from the methods proposed are compared with the corresponding electromagnetic simulation results, achieving fairly good agreement from 250 MHz to 110 GHz.

Abstract:Currently available definitions of the characteristic impedance are ambiguous and/or inaccurate. A general definition, based on the description of discontinuities between adjacent waveguides, is given. This definition is accurate and independent of the structure concerned. So it can be applied to the design of passive components in any type of transmission lines. Using this definition, a given structure can be uniquely characterized, but the absolute value of the characteristic impedance has no sense any more. the design of a microstrip impedance transformer using this new definition is presented. using the mode-matching method prove the accuracy of the theory.

Abstract:Analytical closed-form expressions for the quasi-TEM parameters for asymmetrical coplanar strip lines (ACPS) with finite boundary substrate are obtained using conformal mapping method. The formulations are CAD-oriented purpose. The calculated results are compared with those obtained for a corresponding ACPS assumed that the substrate is infinite. The analyses are useful for MMIC's designs and transmission line theory.

Abstract:Based on time domain reflection theory, a novel way to calculate the characteristic impedance of a parallel-plate transmission line is proposed. With CST microwave studio, a simulation model is established to calculate the accurate value of the characteristic impedance of the parallel-plate transmission line. Based on the results, the analytic formula for the characteristic impedance of the parallel-plate transmission line is modified. Furthermore, the effect of broadening of the bottom plate of parallel-plate transmission line on its characteristic impedance is researched. Considering the effect of broadening of bottom plate, a new formula for the characteristic impedance of the parallel-plate transmission line is proposed. The final formula could be applied to the calculation of the characteristic impedance of bounded-wave simulators and other electromagnetic pulse simulators with similar structure.
