Abstract:Controllable growth of nanocrystals (NCs) in optical glasses is essential to impart photonic functions for demanded applications. Here, Ce3+-doped KLaF4 and LaF3 fluoride NCs are controllably precipitated in a fluorosilicate glass via adjusting the duration and temperature of thermal treatment. The presence of phase separation in the precursor glass (PG) is derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and serves as the driving factor for the crystallization of fluoride NCs. The phase separation of PG, NCs distribution, microscopic morphology and particle size of NCs precipitated in the nano-glass composites (nano-GCs) are investigated by analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Structural and spectroscopic characterizations confirm the influence of the thermal treatment on the crystalline species in the nano-GCs. The developed nano-GCs exhibit intense X-ray excited luminescence with an excellent linearity with the X-ray dosage and a good thermal stability, making them suitable for radiation detection and medical imaging applications.

Abstract:Luminescent Ca1−xF2+x:Eux nanoparticles were synthesized by a chemical co-precipitation method in an ethanol solution. The Ca1−xF2+x:Eux nanoparticles exhibit a sphere-like morphology with particle diameter of about 15–20 nm. With increasing concentration of Eu3+ ion the intensity of XRD diffraction peaks decreased significantly and full width at half-maximum of the peaks increased gradually, which indicated that more Eu3+ ions resulted in the increase of structural defects. The emission spectrum of Ca1−xF2+x:Eux nanoparticles consisted of a few narrow, sharp lines corresponding to Eu3+ ions. The luminescence intensity of Ca1−xF2+x:Eux nanoparticles increased with increasing concentration of Eu3+ ion and reached a maximum at approximately 15 mol%.

Abstract:Water-soluble lanthanide-doped LaF3 nanocrystals were synthesized using a simple method carried out in aqueous solution at low temperature. The nanocrystals have a nearly spherical shape and an average size of below 30 nm. They consisted of well crystallized hexagonal phases. The luminescence quantum efficiency was about 16% in aqueous solution. LaF3 nanocrystals doped with different lanthanide ions (Eu3+, Ce3+, Tb3+, and Nd3+) were synthesized, which showed strong luminescence in the visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions.

Abstract:Cubic nanocrystal and hexagonal micro-rods NaYF4, with predictable size, shape and phase, have been successfully synthesized through hydrothermal reaction. The growth mechanism and the effect of mass transfer on the morphology of hexagonal micro-prism are both discussed in detail. The increase of tri-doping lanthanide ion concentration decreased the size of crystal particle, which was explained by the Arrhenius rate equation together combined with the Gibbs-Thomson relationship. Furthermore, the dopants did not only affect the sizes of tri-doped NaYF4 micro-rods, but also impacted upon fluorescence intensity. The fluorescence of tri-doped NaYF4: Nd3+/Yb3+/Er3+ system, excited by an 800 nm femtolaser, was intensified with the increase of doped lanthanide ions concentration. Nevertheless owing to the fluorescence quenching, the other two systems (NaYF4: Nd3+/Ho3+/Er3+ and NaYF4: Nd3+/Tm3+/Er3+) did not show the same phenomenon.

Abstract:Monodispersed CaF2:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals have been prepared via a facile wet chemical technology. The upconversion luminescence properties of CaF2:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals were compared with those of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals with different phases and particle sizes. The results indicated that CaF2 is a promising host material for producing desirable upconversion luminescence.

Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.

Abstract:In this study, monodispersed and high-quality hexagonal phase LaF3 nanocrystals with different shapes and sizes were synthesized by a solvothermal method using oleic acid as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared LaF3 nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and analysis of the upconversion spectra. The TEM results reveal that the samples present high uniformity and monodispersity and are self-assembled into a two-dimensional ordered array. Moreover, the shape, size and structure of the nanocrystals can be readily tuned by adjusting the NaF content. With increasing content of NaF, the shape of the LaF3 nanocrystals changed from particle to rod and the size gradually increased. More importantly, high NaF content favors the formation of one-dimensional nanorods. High Y b(3+) and Er(3+) content is beneficial to synthesizing the hexagonal phase of NaLaF4 nanocrystals. Furthermore, the TEM results show that the shape and size of the LaF3 nanocrystals can also be tuned by doping lanthanide ions, which provides a new route for size and shape control of nanocrystals. In addition, LaF3 nanocrystals co-doped with Y b(3+)/Tm(3+) present efficient near-infrared (NIR)-NIR upconversion luminescence. More importantly, the upconversion luminescent colors can be readily tuned from blue-white to blue by adjusting the excitation power. Therefore, it is expected that these LaF3 nanocrystals with well-controlled shape, size and NIR-NIR upconversion emission have potential applications in biomedical imaging fields.

Abstract:CaF2 is a promising luminescent host material for a wide range of applications, due to its high transparency, non-hygroscopy, low refractive index, low density, low backscattering efficiency, and abundance in nature. This paper reports the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) characteristics of rare-earth-doped CaF2 nanoparticles and their composite monoliths with epoxy with visible emissions. The CaF2 nanoparticles of ca. 36,108 and 305 nm were prepared by a facile solution-mixing process and subsequent hydrothermal treatment. As the particle size decreases, the luminescence intensity increases for single-doped particles, while oppositely decreases for codoped particles because of energy transfer. Further, Eu2+- and Tb3+-codoped CaF2 nanoparticles exhibit red emission, providing an efficient path for red emission through an energy transfer by Tb3+ bridging without direct Eu3+ doping. The effects of size and concentration are found to be pronounced in CL than PL, as the charge transfer between Eu2+ and Eu3+ reduces the concentration quenching in CL. The luminescence emission characteristics of epoxy/CaF2 monoliths are different from those of particles due to the interactions with the epoxy molecules, and thus the energy transfer is hindered in PL while not in CL, enabling them for high-energy irradiation applications. Abstract:We demonstrated a straightforward approach to the synthesis of ultrasmall, monodisperse and carboxyl-functionalized rare earth (RE) fluoride nanocrystals via a one-pot reaction by introducing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as a coordination agent and surfactant. The morphologies, crystal structure, surface groups, and luminescent properties of the PAA-capped RE fluoride nanocrystals were investigated in detail by TEM, FTIR, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The obtained RE fluoride nanocrystals were ultrasmall in size, monodisperse, and highly crystalline. FTIR spectra con-firmed that the PAA molecules strongly coordinated to the surface of the nanocrystals, which allows the formation of transparent colloidal aqueous solutions. Successful coating of the LaF(3) shell on the NaCeF(4):Tb(3+) nanocrystals can increase the luminescence efficiency and lifetimes of Tb(3+) ions relative to the pure NaCeF(4):Tb(3+) core. This synthesis procedure could become a versatile approach for the straightforward synthesis of carboxyl-functionalized nanocrystals with ultrasmall size and monodispersity.

Abstract:A range of nearly monodispersed NaYF4 single-crystal nanorods, hexagonal nanoplates, and nanoparticles have been successfully prepared via a facile wet chemical technology. Varying the dopants leads to different luminescence. These as-prepared nanocrystals not only present novel room-temperature downconversion (DC) and upconversion (UC) fluorescence but can also be transparently dispersed in cyclohexane. The effects of reaction temperature and time, doped ion concentration, ratio of NaF to Ln(NO3)(3), and the reactant content on the shape, size, and crystal phase purity of the as-prepared nanocrystals have been investigated in detail. The fluorescence photos, spectra, luminescence mechanism, and the formation mechanism of the nanorods have also been demonstrated. For the next biolabel applications, the colloidal nanoparticles dispersed in cyclohexane have also been transferred into water by surface silane modification. For their unique DC and UC luminescence and high processability, these nanocrystals will open new avenues in biolabels, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), color displays, anti-counterfeiting, and solid-state lasers.

Abstract:Size control of BaF2 nanocubes has been achieved by varying reaction time and pH value, thus producing nanocubes with a controllable edge length in the range 10-1000 nm. A linear relationship between cube size and reaction time has been revealed. Furthermore, a process has been developed to separate the growing BaF2 nanocubes from the remaining solid products at different stages of the synthesis. On the basis of the observed crystallite morphologies, we have elucidated an "extension growing" mechanism to describe the size-controlled growth of BaF2 nanocubes using this method. Photoluminescence results demonstrate that the deoxidant selenite ions prevent the incorporation of oxygen into the BaF2 nanocubes effectually, which will greatly affect their performance as scintillators. Elaboration, Structure and Luminescence of Sphere-Like CaF2:RE Sub-Microparticles by Ionic Liquids Based Hydrothermal Process

Abstract:A new and simple method for the synthesis of rare earth ion doped CaF₂ (CaF₂:RE³⁺) sub- microparticles is presented, using an ionic liquids based hydrothermal process. The structural properties of the CaF₂ nanoparticles were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The CaF₂ nanoparticles exhibited a sphere-like morphology with a diameter of about 150 nm. During the synthesis, the ionic liquid [bmim]BF₄(1-butyl, 2-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate) acts as both a co-solvent and reactant. The crucial effect of EDTA-2Na (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid disodium salt) on the formation of CaF₂:RE sub-microparticles was explored and discussed. The strong green (513-569 nm) and strong red (636-685 nm) upconversion emissions of the CaF₂:Er³⁺, Yb³⁺ nanoparticles (λex = 980 nm) were also investigated. The luminescent properties of CaF₂:Eu³⁺ and CaF₂:Ce³⁺,Tb³⁺ were also evaluated. This work may represent a new step in synthesizing fluoride sub-nanocrystals using ionic liquids.

Abstract:Single crystal In(OH)(3) nanocubes were synthesized by a designed novel hydrothermal treatment, and the size can be simply moderated by varying the hydrothermal temperature. By calcining the In(OH)(3) nanocubes in air at 400 degreesC, single crystal In2O3 nanocubes were also prepared with the size slightly shrinking. Room temperature photoluminescence showed a broad photoluminescence emission spectrum in the blue-green region with its maximum intensity centered at 450 nm, which was mainly attributed to the effect of the oxygen deficiencies.

Abstract:Oil-dispersible Yb-Er co-doped LaF3 upconversion (UC) fluorescent nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized via a liquid-solid twophase approach. The nucleation and growth of the NCs only occurred in the interface of the two phases, which made the process very slow, and thus well-crystallized and regular-shaped LaF3:Yb,Er NCs were obtained. Abstract:Monodisperse rare-earth-doped NaxScF3+x nanocrystals have been synthesized via the co-thermolysis of trifluoroacetates. They can be easily tuned from monoclinic-phase (Na3ScF6) to hexagonal-phase (NaScF4) just through changing the ratio of Na(CF3COO) to Sc(CF3COO)(3). The obtained samples show bright upconversion photoluminescence. Furthermore, luminescence with a wide spectrum of colors, including white, has been achieved by the appropriate blend of NaScF4:Yb3+/Er3+ and NaScF4:Yb3+/Tm3+ nanocrystals.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have attracted much attention in the last few decades because of their sizeand shape-dependent new properties on the nanoscale. Implementation of nanocrystals depends not only on the diverse properties arising from their size and shape, but also on the architecture, which has potential to greatly contribute to applications. Recently, research efforts have been focused on looking for new composites with hollow and hierarchical structures and with novel properties beyond single composition and simple morphology. Among them, hollow structures are particularly interesting for applications in drug delivery, plasmonics, and catalysis. Abstract:Uniform alkaline earth metal fluoride MF2 (M = Mg, Ca, and Sr) nanocrystals with various shapes (tetragonal MgF2 nanoneedle-constructed 3D networks; cubic CaF2 nanoplates and nanopolyhedra; cubic SrF2 nanoplates and nanowires) have been synthesized from the thermolysis of alkaline earth metal trifluoroacetate (M(CF3COO)(2)) in hot surfactant solutions (oleic acid, oleylamine, and I-octadecene). The MF2 nanocrystals were formed by the controlled fluorination of the M-O bond into the M-F bond at the nucleation stage and subsequent growth process. For phase-pure MF2 nanocrystals, the growth of shape-selective MF2 nanocrystals was likely due to the template direction of micellar structures formed by self-assembly of capping ligands and the so-called "Ostwald ripening" process. With the developed synthetic strategy, the uniform upconversion SrF2:Yb,Er and core/shell SrF2:Yb,Er@SrF2 nanocrystals were also obtained. The core/shell-structured nanocrystals exhibited enhanced emission intensity and saturation power with respect to their core counterparts, owing to the suppression of associated nonradiative decays.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped CaS crystals are extensively studied as light-emitting materials, but the investigation of CaS nanocrystals is largely lagging. This work reports a doping-induced modification of surface charge density and the local coordination environment in CaS:Ce nanocrystals, which offers precise control over the nanocrystal size (39–14 nm) and emission color (green to yellow). Our mechanistic investigations, corroborated by theoretical calculations, reveal a S-enriched nanocrystal surface that accommodates excess charges of the aliovalent lanthanide dopants. Owing to the altered surface structure, we identify a dark Ce state that selectively extinguishes light emission of the CaS:Ce nanocrystals. We demonstrate that the doping-induced surface effects can be offset by coating the CaS:Ce nanocrystals with an undoped CaS shell, giving rise to a shell-thickness-dependent emission. Our findings suggest that nanocrystals may respond differently to impurity dopants than the corresponding bulk crystals, thereby giving rise to extended control over materials properties for applications such as optical encryption.
