Abstract:In this paper we study the interaction of strong and weak singularities for hyperbolic system of conservation laws in multidimensional space. Under the assumption of transversal intersect of the shock front with the bicharacteristics bearing weak singularities we proved a theorem on regularity propagation across the shock front.

We establish a space-time integral estimate of the difference of solutions of non-degenerate scalar conservation laws. It is valid over the maximal domain [math] in which the solutions are shock-free, and it fails beyond [math]. When comparing a solution with its shifts, we deduce a Besov-like estimate at the development of its first singularity.

Abstract:A Riemann problem for the conservation law , where x , t , k , v and are real numbers, is studied with the goal of getting singular solutions in a convenient space of distributions that contains delta shock waves. Here stands for an entire function taking real values on the real axis and H represents the Heaviside function. When u is seen as a density of matter some surprises may appear such as the creation of matter from a vacuum state. In a particular case, as the time goes on, such a matter grows continuously, running away from any spatial bounded region, what can be viewed as a unidimensional model of universe.

Abstract:The study on the shock formation and the regularities of the resulting shock surfaces for hyperbolic conservation laws is a basic problem in the nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we are concerned with the shock formation and the optimal regularities of the resulting shock curves for the 1D conservation law partial derivative(t)u +partial derivative(x)f (u) = 0 with the smooth initial data u(0, x) = u(0)(x). If u(0)(x) is an element of C-1(R) and f (u) is an element of C-2(R), it is well-known that the solution u will blow up on the time T* = - 1/min g'(x) when min g'(x) < 0 holds for g(x) = f'(u(0)(x)). Let x(0) be a local minimum point of g'(x) such that g'(x(0)) = min g'(x) < 0 and g ''(x(0)) = 0, g((3))(x(0)) > 0 (which is called the generic nondegenerate condition), then by theorem 2 of Lebaud (1994 J. Math. Pures Appl. 9 523-565), a weak entropy solution u together with the shock curve x = phi(t)is an element of C-2[T-*, T-* + epsilon) starting from the blowup point (T-*, x(*) = x(0) + g(x(0))T-*) can be locally constructed. When the generic nondegenerate condition is violated, namely, when x(0) is a local minimum point of g'(x) such that g ''(x(0)) = g((3))(x(0)) =... = g((2k0))(x(0)) = 0 but g((2k0+1))(x(0)) > 0 for some k(0) is an element of N with k(0) >= 2; or g((k))(x(0)) = 0 for any k is an element of N and k >= 2, we will study the shock formation and the optimal regularity of the shock curve x =phi(t), meanwhile, some precise descriptions on the behaviors of u near the blowup point (T-*, x(*)) are given. Our main aims are to show that: around the blowup point, the shock really appears whether the initial data are degenerate with finite orders or with infinite orders; the optimal regularities of the shock solution and the resulting shock curve have the explicit relations with the degenerate degrees of the initial data.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Volume 23, Issue 3, Page 2323-2363, September 2024. We are interested in the dynamics of interfaces, or zeros, of shock waves in general scalar viscous conservation laws with a locally Lipschitz continuous flux function, such as the modular Burgers equation. We prove that all interfaces coalesce within finite time, leaving behind either a single interface or no interface at all. Our proof relies on mass and energy estimates, regularization of the flux function, and an application of the Sturm theorems on the number of zeros of solutions of parabolic problems. Our analysis yields an explicit upper bound on the time of extinction in terms of the initial condition and the flux function. Moreover, in the case of a smooth flux function, we characterize the generic bifurcations arising at a coalescence event with and without the presence of odd symmetry. We identify associated scaling laws describing the local interface dynamics near collision. Finally, we present an extension of these results to the case of antishock waves converging to asymptotic limits of opposite signs. Our analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations of the modular Burgers equation.

Abstract:Under the genuinely nonlinear assumptions for one dimensional $n\times n$ strictly hyperbolic conservation laws, we investigate the geometric blowup of smooth solutions and the development of singularities when the small initial data fulfill the generic nondegenerate condition. At first, near the unique blowup point we give a precise description on the space-time blowup rate of the smooth solution and meanwhile derive the cusp singularity structure of characteristic envelope. These results are established through extending the smooth solution of the completely nonlinear blowup system across the blowup time. Subsequently, by utilizing a new form on the resulting 1-D strictly hyperbolic system with $(n-1)$ good components and one bad component, together with the choice of an efficient iterative scheme and some involved analyses, a weak entropy shock wave starting from the blowup point is constructed.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of singularities and the formation of shocks for a class of multidimensional quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws including the multidimensional Keyfitz-Kranzer system with a radial state function. Precisely speaking, for these kind of systems we give sharp estimates on the blow-up rate of the smooth solution, provide a complete description of the solution close to the blow-up point, and construct the entropy solution in a neighbourhood of the blow-up point, which contains a unique shock surface issuing from the blow-up point. Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation-(1 + 3G ''(0)(partial derivative(t)phi)(2))partial derivative(2)(t)phi + Delta phi = 0,where is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since satisfies the classical null condition, it admits global smooth solutions for small data. Therefore, we will work with large data (in energy norm). Moreover, no symmetry condition is imposed on the initial datum. We emphasize the geometric perspectives of shock formation in the proof. More specifically, the key idea is to study the interplay between the following two objects: (1) the energy estimates of the linearized equations of ; (2) the differential geometry of the Lorentzian metric . Indeed, the study of the characteristic hypersurfaces (implies shock formation) is the study of the null hypersurfaces of g. The techniques in the proof are inspired by the work (Christodoulou in The Formation of Shocks in 3-Dimensional Fluids. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2007) in which the formation of shocks for 3-dimensional relativistic compressible Euler equations with small initial data is established. We also use the short pulse method which is introduced in the study of formation of black holes in general relativity in Christodoulou (The Formation of Black Holes in General Relativity. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2009) and generalized in Klainerman and Rodnianski (Acta Math 208(2):211-333, 2012).

Abstract:We show that singularities form after the interaction of three transversal semilinear conormal waves. Our results hold for space dimensions two and higher, and for arbitrary smooth nonlinearity. The case of two space dimensions in which the nonlinearity is a polynomial was studied by the author and Yiran Wang.

Abstract:In the paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first-order conservation law \partial tu + \partial xF(u) + \partial yG(u) = 0 with smooth initial data u0(x, y). It is well known that the smooth solution u will blow up on the time T* = - 1 the first-order derivatives \nabla t,x,yu blow up on t = T*; meanwhile, u itself is still continuous until t = T*. Under the generic nondegenerate condition of H(\xi ,\eta ), we construct a local weak entropy solution u for t \geq T* which is not uniformly Lipschitz continuous on two sides of a shock surface \Sigma . The strength of the constructed shock is zero on the initial blowup curve \Gamma and then gradually increases for t > T*. Additionally, in the neighborhood of \Gamma , some detailed and precise descriptions on the singularities of solution u are given.

Abstract:This paper concerns the reflection of shock waves for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension. It is shown that the mixed initial–boundary value problem for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with nonlinear boundary conditions on the quarter-plane {(t,x)∣t≥0,x≥0} admits a unique global piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) containing only shock waves with small amplitude and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the Riemann solution u=U(xt) of the corresponding Riemann problem, if the positive eigenvalues are genuinely nonlinear and the Riemann solution has only shock waves, and no rarefaction waves and contact discontinuities. Our result indicates that the Riemann solution u=U(xt) consisting of only shock waves possesses a semi-global nonlinear structure stability.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the semilinear wave equation. The Cauchy data are assumed to be conormal with respect to a point, and the source term is polynomial with respect to the solution and its first derivatives. Thanks to the study of multiplicative properties of some refined hyperbolic conormal space, we improve the known results about the nonlinear type singularities of the solution. We have a similar result for the propagation from the past of conormality with respect to the light cone. On considère le problème de Cauchy pour l'équation des ondes semi-linéaire à données de Cauchy conormales par rapport à un point, et à terme source polynomial par rapport à la solution et à ses dérivées premières. Grâce à l'étude des propriétés multiplicatives d'espaces conormaux hyperboliques précisés, on améliore les résultats connus sur la taille des singularités de type non-linéaire de la solution. On a un résultat analogue pour la propagation à partir du passé de la conormalité par rapport au cône de lumière.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first order conservation law $\partial_t u+\partial_x F(u)+\partial_y G(u)=0$ with smooth initial data $u_0(x,y)$. Abstract:This note is devoted to the rigorous theory of nonlinear geometric optics for multiple shocks to a general N x N conservation law in one space variable. For the problem of multiple weak shocks perturbed by small amplitude, high frequency oscillatory waves, we obtain that the leading profiles of oscillatory shocks are solutions to an integro-differential system with free boundaries, the leading terms of shock fronts don't oscillate, and oscillations only appear in the leading terms of shock speeds.

Abstract:Extending our earlier work on Lax-type shocks of systems of conservation laws, we establish existence and stability of curved multidimensional shock fronts in the vanishing viscosity limit for general Lax- or undercompressive-type shock waves of nonconservative hyperbolic systems with parabolic regularization. The hyperbolic equations may be of variable multiplicity and the parabolic regularization may be of ``real'', or partially parabolic, type. We prove an existence result for inviscid nonconservative shocks that extends to multidimensional shocks a one-dimensional result of X. Lin proved by quite different methods. In addition, we construct families of smooth viscous shocks converging to a given inviscid shock as viscosity goes to zero, thereby justifying the small viscosity limit for multidimensional nonconservative shocks. In our previous work on shocks we made use of conservative form especially in parts of the low frequency analysis. Thus, most of the new analysis of this paper is concentrated in this area. By adopting the more general nonconservative viewpoint, we are able to shed new light on both the viscous and inviscid theory. For example, we can now provide a clearer geometric motivation for the low frequency analysis in the viscous case. Also, we show that one may, in the treatment of inviscid stability of nonclassical and/or nonconservative shocks, remove an apparently restrictive technical assumption made by Mokrane and Coulombel in their work on, respectively, shock-type nonconservative boundary problems and conservative undercompressive shocks. Another advantage of the nonconservative perspective is that Lax and undercompressive shocks can be treated by exactly the same analysis.
