Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for the semilinear wave equation. The Cauchy data are assumed to be conormal with respect to a point, and the source term is polynomial with respect to the solution and its first derivatives. Thanks to the study of multiplicative properties of some refined hyperbolic conormal space, we improve the known results about the nonlinear type singularities of the solution. We have a similar result for the propagation from the past of conormality with respect to the light cone. On considère le problème de Cauchy pour l'équation des ondes semi-linéaire à données de Cauchy conormales par rapport à un point, et à terme source polynomial par rapport à la solution et à ses dérivées premières. Grâce à l'étude des propriétés multiplicatives d'espaces conormaux hyperboliques précisés, on améliore les résultats connus sur la taille des singularités de type non-linéaire de la solution. On a un résultat analogue pour la propagation à partir du passé de la conormalité par rapport au cône de lumière.
Higher-Order Boussinesq-Type Equations for Interfacial Waves in A Two-Fluid System

Abstract:Interfacial waves propagating along the interface between a three-dimensional two-fluid system with a rigid upper boundary and an uneven bottom are considered. There is a light fluid layer overlying a heavier one in the system, and a small density difference exists between the two layers. A set of higher-order Boussinesq-type equations in terms of the depth-averaged velocities accounting for stronger nonlinearity are derived. When the small parameter measuring frequency dispersion keeping up to lower-order and full nonlinearity are considered, the equations include the Choi and Camassa's results (1999). The enhanced equations in terms of the depth-averaged velocities are obtained by applying the enhancement technique introduced by Madsen et al. (1991) and Schaffer and Madsen (1995a). It is noted that the equations derived from the present study include, as special cases, those obtained by Madsen and Schaffer (1998). By comparison with the dispersion relation of the linear Stokes waves, we found that the dispersion relation is more improved than Choi and Camassa's (1999) results, and the applicable scope of water depth is deeper.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the discussion as done in <cit.> on turbulent channel flow described by the Navier-Stokes model and the Navier-Stokes-alpha model. We study the non-stationary solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes-α model having particular function forms. In particular, the term of sum of pressure and potential can be shown to be harmonic in the space variable.

Abstract:The nonlinear variants of the generalized Boussinesq water equations with positive and negative exponents are studied in this paper. The analytic expressions of the compactons, solitons, solitary patterns, and periodic solutions for the equations are obtained by using a technique based on the reduction of order of differential equations. It is shown that the nonlinear variants, or nonlinear variants together with the wave numbers, directly lead to the qualitative change in the physical structures of the solutions.

Abstract:The nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation is widely used in natural science. Various nonlinear excitations of the NLS equation have been found by many methods. However, except for the soliton-soliton interactions, it is very difficult to find interaction solutions between different types of nonlinear excitations. In this paper, the symmetry reduction method is further developed to find interaction solutions between solitons and other types of NLS waves. Especially, the soliton-cnoidal wave interaction solutions are explicitly studied in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions and the third type of incomplete elliptic integrals. Some special concrete interaction solutions and their asymptotic behaviors are discussed both in analytical and graphical ways.

Abstract:A fully nonlinear solution for bi-chromatic progressive waves in water of finite depth in the framework of the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is derived. The bi-chromatic wave field is assumed to be obtained by the nonlinear interaction of two monochromatic wave trains that propagate independently in the same direction before encountering. The equations for the mass, momentum, and energy fluxes based on the accurate high-order homotopy series solutions are obtained using a discrete integration and a Fourier series-based fitting. The conservation equations for the mean rates of the mass, momentum, and energy fluxes before and after the interaction of the two nonlinear monochromatic wave trains are proposed to establish the relationship between the steady-state bi-chromatic wave field and the two nonlinear monochromatic wave trains. The parametric analysis on ε1 and ε2, representing the nonlinearity of the bi-chromatic wave field, is performed to obtain a sufficiently small standard deviation Sd, which is applied to describe the deviation from the conservation state (Sd = 0) in terms of the mean rates of the mass, momentum, and energy fluxes before and after the interaction. It is demonstrated that very small standard deviation from the conservation state can be achieved. After the interaction, the amplitude of the primary wave with a lower circular frequency is found to decrease; while the one with a higher circular frequency is found to increase. Moreover, the highest horizontal velocity of the water particles underneath the largest wave crest, which is obtained by the nonlinear interaction between the two monochromatic waves, is found to be significantly higher than the linear superposition value of the corresponding velocity of the two monochromatic waves. The present study is helpful to enrich and deepen the understanding with insight to steady-state wave-wave interactions.

Abstract:Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics &Materials, Ahead of Print. The breather, rogue and interaction waves of the (3+1)-dimensional integrable fourth-order nonlinear equation are reviewed. The breather and rouge waves are attained with the aid of the extended homoclinic test. Thereafter, the interaction solutions between a lump wave and a 1-kink or 2-kink soliton are researched. Additionally, four kinds of interaction solutions between lump, kink, and periodic waves through a " rational-cosh-cos" test function are established. Furthermore, the dynamic attributions of the attained solutions are presented utilizing the graphical analysis.

Abstract:Abstract We present exact solutions for new (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear equations of wave propagation and fluids. We use the tanh/sech method combined with a computer symbolic system for a reliable treatment of this work. We determine a variety of exact solutions for each equation that contains soliton, kink and periodic solutions. The constraints that guarantee the existence of soliton and kink solutions were examined and found to be related to the coefficients k , r and s of the space variables x , y , and z respectively.

Abstract:Motivated by problems arising in geophysical fluid dynamics, we investigate resonant and near resonant wave interactions in nonlinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearity, We place a special focus on interactions between slow wave modes, with zero frequency in the linear limit, and fast modes. These regularly occur in geophysical fluid systems with conserved potential vorticity or similar conserved quantities. A general multi-scale asymptotic expansion is used to show how the higher order nonlinear interaction coefficients are derived as a combination of the first order terms arising at the triad interaction level. From the general nth-order interaction coefficient we present a proof by induction how the limiting effect for particular combinations of slow and fast modes pushes their interactions to a slower timescale, and we show how this is linked to the form of the conserved quantities. We compare near resonant expansions with exact resonant expansions, and show how near-resonances allow higher order expansions to be reduced to just the most dominant contributions. These contributions then occur at one order higher in the expansion when compared to the analogous exact resonance expansion.

A numerical method for solving the generalized tangent vector of hyperbolic systems

Abstract:This work is concerned with the computation of the first-order variation for one-dimensional hyperbolic partial differential equations. In the case of shock waves the main challenge is addressed by developing a numerical method to compute the evolution of the generalized tangent vector introduced by Bressan and Marson (1995). Our basic strategy is to combine the conservative numerical schemes and a novel expression of the interface conditions for the tangent vectors along the discontinuity. Based on this, we propose a simple numerical method to compute the tangent vectors for general hyperbolic systems. Numerical results are presented for Burgers' equation and a 2 x 2 hyperbolic system with two genuinely nonlinear fields.

Abstract:Recently, many works have been devoted to the discussion of the propagation and interaction of singularities for solutions of nonlinear hyperbolic equations. Among them the study of the interaction of nonlinear progressing waves is noticeable. First in [ 11, J. M. Bony discussed the behavior of’the interaction of two progressing waves. He showed that for semilinear hyperbolic equations of second order, when two progressing waves intersect transversally, no anomalous singularities are caused by the interaction, and for semilinear hyperbolic equations of higher order anomalous progressing waves appear issuing from the intersection. However, the interaction is much more complicated when three progressing waves intersect transversally with each other at one point. J. Rauch and M. Reed constructed an example showing that in the triple-intersection case, besides the linear-predicted singularities, a new progressing wave caused by interaction issuing from the intersection point propagates along the characteristic cone. Recently, R. Melrose and N. Ritter [3], J. M. Bony 141, and M. Beals [5] discussed the general triple-intersection of progressing waves for semilinear wave equations with two space variables by different methods. They pointed out that in the generalized case the singularities have the same structure as that in RauchhReed’s example. On the other hand, M. Beals and G. Metivier considered reflection of progressing waves for boundary value problems of semilinear hyperbolic equations. On the basis of these works, we study in this paper the interaction of two progressing waves with reflection on the boundary for boundary value problems of semilinear wave equations in two space variables. Our result shows that, in this case, beside the linear-predicted singularities there appears an anomalous reflected wave, which issues from the intersection

Abstract:Due to the importance of the nonlinear partial differential equations in applied physics, many mathematicians and physicists are interesting to the nonlinear partial differential equations. One of the main tasks of studying the nonlinear partial differential equations is to obtain the exact solutions for the nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we study the exact solutions of a generalized (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equation. According to the modified hyperbolic function method and the traveling transformation method, the generalized (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equation is changed into an ordinary differential equation. By taking the homogeneous balance between the highest order nonlinear terms and the derivatives of the highest order, we change the differential equation into an algebraic system. By solving the algebraic system, we obtain the solutions for the nonlinear partial differential equation. At last, some solutions and their figures are given by specific parameters. All the solutions conclude the triangle function solutions, the positive hyperbolic function solutions, and the hyperbolic triangle function solutions. These solutions exhibit the dynamics of nonlinear waves and the solutions are useful for the study on interaction behavior of nonlinear waves in shallow water, plasma, nonlinear optics and Bose–Einstein condensates.

Abstract:This paper introduces two equations of non-Newtonian boundary-layer fluid: Cauchy equation of flow field and P-T/T equation of stress field. Secondly, we analyze the convergence of this system of fluid-solid coupled equation with semi-discrete finite element method. We use Galerkin finite element method on the space and semi-implicit C-N difference scheme on the time. Thus, the convergent order of the coupled equations is O(h(2) + k(2)).

Abstract:We investigate a dissipative hyperbolic geometry flow in two space variables for which a new nonlinear wave equation is derived. Based on an energy method, the global existence of solutions to the dissipative hyperbolic geometry flow is established. Furthermore, the scalar curvature of the metric remains uniformly bounded. Moreover, under suitable assumptions, we establish the global existence of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem, and we show that the solution and its derivative decay to zero as the time tends to infinity. In addition, the scalar curvature of the solution metric converges to the one of the flat metric at an algebraic rate.

Abstract:Fluids are seen in, e.g., mechanical, chemical and biomedical engineering, astrophysics, biology and geophysics. In this paper, we investigate a (3+1)-dimensional generalized variable-coefficient shallow water wave equation for the flow below a pressure surface in a fluid. Via the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy reduction, we derive the rational solutions in terms of the Gramian. The first-order, higher-order and multi-lump waves are obtained. We present the first-order lump waves on the periodic, monotonically increasing, parabolic and Gaussian backgrounds. We observe the second-order lump waves: Two lump waves interact with each other and separate into two new lump waves; After the interaction, velocities and amplitudes of the two lump waves change. Two-lump waves are also shown: Different from the second-order lump waves, after the interaction, two-lump waves propagate with their original velocities and amplitudes.

Abstract:The nonlinear forcing terms for the wave equation in general curvilinear coordinates are derived based on a hyperelastic material. The expressions for the nonlinear part of the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress are specialized for axisymmetric torsional and longitudinal fundamental wave fields in a cylinder. The matrix characteristics of the nonlinear forcing terms and secondary mode wavestructures are manipulated to analyze the higher harmonic generation due to the guided wave mode self interactions and mutual interactions. It is proven that both torsional and longitudinal mode secondary fields can be cumulative by specific type of guided wave mode interactions. A method for the selection of preferred fundamental excitations that generate strongly cumulative higher harmonics is formulated, and described in detail for second harmonic generation. Hyperelastic finite element models are built to simulate second harmonic generation by T(0,3) and L(0,4) modes. A linear increase of the modal amplitude ratio A2/A1^2 over the propagation distance is observed for both cases, which indicates mode L(0,5) is effectively generated as cumulative second harmonics.
