Abstract:This paper is devoted to the rigorous theory of nonlinear geometric optics for multiple shocks to a general N x N conservation law in one space variable. For the problem of multiple weak shocks perturbed by small amplitude, high-frequency oscillatory waves, we obtain that the leading profiles of oscillatory shocks are solution to an integro-differential system with free boundaries, the leading terms of shock fronts don't oscillate, and oscillations only appear in the leading terms shock speeds.

Abstract:Under the genuinely nonlinear assumptions for one dimensional $n\times n$ strictly hyperbolic conservation laws, we investigate the geometric blowup of smooth solutions and the development of singularities when the small initial data fulfill the generic nondegenerate condition. At first, near the unique blowup point we give a precise description on the space-time blowup rate of the smooth solution and meanwhile derive the cusp singularity structure of characteristic envelope. These results are established through extending the smooth solution of the completely nonlinear blowup system across the blowup time. Subsequently, by utilizing a new form on the resulting 1-D strictly hyperbolic system with $(n-1)$ good components and one bad component, together with the choice of an efficient iterative scheme and some involved analyses, a weak entropy shock wave starting from the blowup point is constructed.

Abstract:It is proven that a class of the generalized Riemann problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with the uniform damping term admits a unique global piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) containing only n shock waves with small amplitude on t⩾0 and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the similarity solution u=U(xt) of the corresponding homogeneous Riemann problem. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global shock solutions, piecewise continuous and piecewise smooth solution with shock discontinuities, of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with a single jump initial data. We also give an example to show that the uniform damping mechanism is not strong enough to prevent the formation of shock waves.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Volume 23, Issue 3, Page 2323-2363, September 2024. We are interested in the dynamics of interfaces, or zeros, of shock waves in general scalar viscous conservation laws with a locally Lipschitz continuous flux function, such as the modular Burgers equation. We prove that all interfaces coalesce within finite time, leaving behind either a single interface or no interface at all. Our proof relies on mass and energy estimates, regularization of the flux function, and an application of the Sturm theorems on the number of zeros of solutions of parabolic problems. Our analysis yields an explicit upper bound on the time of extinction in terms of the initial condition and the flux function. Moreover, in the case of a smooth flux function, we characterize the generic bifurcations arising at a coalescence event with and without the presence of odd symmetry. We identify associated scaling laws describing the local interface dynamics near collision. Finally, we present an extension of these results to the case of antishock waves converging to asymptotic limits of opposite signs. Our analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations of the modular Burgers equation.

Abstract:The study on the shock formation and the regularities of the resulting shock surfaces for hyperbolic conservation laws is a basic problem in the nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we are concerned with the shock formation and the optimal regularities of the resulting shock curves for the 1D conservation law partial derivative(t)u +partial derivative(x)f (u) = 0 with the smooth initial data u(0, x) = u(0)(x). If u(0)(x) is an element of C-1(R) and f (u) is an element of C-2(R), it is well-known that the solution u will blow up on the time T* = - 1/min g'(x) when min g'(x) < 0 holds for g(x) = f'(u(0)(x)). Let x(0) be a local minimum point of g'(x) such that g'(x(0)) = min g'(x) < 0 and g ''(x(0)) = 0, g((3))(x(0)) > 0 (which is called the generic nondegenerate condition), then by theorem 2 of Lebaud (1994 J. Math. Pures Appl. 9 523-565), a weak entropy solution u together with the shock curve x = phi(t)is an element of C-2[T-*, T-* + epsilon) starting from the blowup point (T-*, x(*) = x(0) + g(x(0))T-*) can be locally constructed. When the generic nondegenerate condition is violated, namely, when x(0) is a local minimum point of g'(x) such that g ''(x(0)) = g((3))(x(0)) =... = g((2k0))(x(0)) = 0 but g((2k0+1))(x(0)) > 0 for some k(0) is an element of N with k(0) >= 2; or g((k))(x(0)) = 0 for any k is an element of N and k >= 2, we will study the shock formation and the optimal regularity of the shock curve x =phi(t), meanwhile, some precise descriptions on the behaviors of u near the blowup point (T-*, x(*)) are given. Our main aims are to show that: around the blowup point, the shock really appears whether the initial data are degenerate with finite orders or with infinite orders; the optimal regularities of the shock solution and the resulting shock curve have the explicit relations with the degenerate degrees of the initial data.

Abstract:Extending our earlier work on Lax-type shocks of systems of conservation laws, we establish existence and stability of curved multidimensional shock fronts in the vanishing viscosity limit for general Lax- or undercompressive-type shock waves of nonconservative hyperbolic systems with parabolic regularization. The hyperbolic equations may be of variable multiplicity and the parabolic regularization may be of ``real'', or partially parabolic, type. We prove an existence result for inviscid nonconservative shocks that extends to multidimensional shocks a one-dimensional result of X. Lin proved by quite different methods. In addition, we construct families of smooth viscous shocks converging to a given inviscid shock as viscosity goes to zero, thereby justifying the small viscosity limit for multidimensional nonconservative shocks. In our previous work on shocks we made use of conservative form especially in parts of the low frequency analysis. Thus, most of the new analysis of this paper is concentrated in this area. By adopting the more general nonconservative viewpoint, we are able to shed new light on both the viscous and inviscid theory. For example, we can now provide a clearer geometric motivation for the low frequency analysis in the viscous case. Also, we show that one may, in the treatment of inviscid stability of nonclassical and/or nonconservative shocks, remove an apparently restrictive technical assumption made by Mokrane and Coulombel in their work on, respectively, shock-type nonconservative boundary problems and conservative undercompressive shocks. Another advantage of the nonconservative perspective is that Lax and undercompressive shocks can be treated by exactly the same analysis.

Abstract:In the paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first-order conservation law \partial tu + \partial xF(u) + \partial yG(u) = 0 with smooth initial data u0(x, y). It is well known that the smooth solution u will blow up on the time T* = - 1 the first-order derivatives \nabla t,x,yu blow up on t = T*; meanwhile, u itself is still continuous until t = T*. Under the generic nondegenerate condition of H(\xi ,\eta ), we construct a local weak entropy solution u for t \geq T* which is not uniformly Lipschitz continuous on two sides of a shock surface \Sigma . The strength of the constructed shock is zero on the initial blowup curve \Gamma and then gradually increases for t > T*. Additionally, in the neighborhood of \Gamma , some detailed and precise descriptions on the singularities of solution u are given.

Abstract:This paper concerns the reflection of shock waves for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension. It is shown that the mixed initial–boundary value problem for general quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with nonlinear boundary conditions on the quarter-plane {(t,x)∣t≥0,x≥0} admits a unique global piecewise C1 solution u=u(t,x) containing only shock waves with small amplitude and this solution possesses a global structure similar to that of the Riemann solution u=U(xt) of the corresponding Riemann problem, if the positive eigenvalues are genuinely nonlinear and the Riemann solution has only shock waves, and no rarefaction waves and contact discontinuities. Our result indicates that the Riemann solution u=U(xt) consisting of only shock waves possesses a semi-global nonlinear structure stability.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of Riemann problem for the Euler equations in a van der Waals fluid is considered. We constructed the weak solution in multidimensional space which contains one shock front and one subsonic phase boundary. We mainly follow the arguments of Majda's [A. Majda, The stability of multi-dimensional shock fronts, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 275 (1983) 1–95; A. Majda, The existence of multi-dimensional shock fronts, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 281 (1983) 1–93] and Métivier's [G. Métivier, Interaction de deux chocs pour un système de deux lois de conservation, en dimension deux d'espace, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 296 (1986) 431–479] work. The linear stability results are based on Majda's [A. Majda, The stability of multi-dimensional shock fronts, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 275 (1983) 1–95] work for the single shock front and Wang and Xin's [Y.-G. Wang, Z. Xin, Stability and existence of multidimensional subsonic phase transitions, Acta Math. Appl. Sin. 19 (2003) 529–558] work for the single phase boundary. The initial boundary value problem concerned in this paper is different from the boundary value problem for double shock fronts concerned in [G. Métivier, Interaction de deux chocs pour un système de deux lois de conservation, en dimension deux d'espace, Trans. Amer. Math. Abstract:In this paper, the problem on formation and construction of a multidimensional shock wave is studied for the first order conservation law $\partial_t u+\partial_x F(u)+\partial_y G(u)=0$ with smooth initial data $u_0(x,y)$. It is well-known that the smooth solution $u$ will blow up on the time $T^*=-\frac{1}{\min{H(\xi,\eta)}}$ when $\min{H(\xi,\eta})<0$ holds for $H(\xi,\eta)=\partial_{\xi}(F'(u_0(\xi,\eta)))+\partial_{\eta}(G'(u_0(\xi,\eta)))$, more precisely, only the first order derivatives $\nabla_{t,x,y}u$ blow up on $t=T^*$ meanwhile $u$ itself is still continuous until $t=T^*$. Abstract:We consider nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws, posed on a differential (n+1)-manifold with boundary referred to as a spacetime, and in which the "flux" is defined as a flux field of n-forms depending on a parameter (the unknown variable). We introduce a formulation of the initial and boundary value problem which is geometric in nature and is more natural than the vector field approach recently developed for Riemannian manifolds. Our main assumption on the manifold and the flux field is a global hyperbolicity condition, which provides a global time-orientation as is standard in Lorentzian geometry and general relativity. Assuming that the manifold admits a foliation by compact slices, we establish the existence of a semi-group of entropy solutions. Moreover, given any two hypersurfaces with one lying in the future of the other, we establish a "contraction" property which compares two entropy solutions, in a (geometrically natural) distance equivalent to the L1 distance. To carry out the proofs, we rely on a new version of the finite volume method, which only requires the knowledge of the given n-volume form structure on the (n+1)-manifold and involves the {\sl total flux} across faces of the elements of the triangulations, only, rather than the product of a numerical flux times the measure of that face.

Abstract:We consider the asymptotic nonlinear stability of viscous shock profiles for an initial‐boundary value problem of the scalar conservation laws with an artificial heat flux satisfying Cattaneo's law in the negative half line R−=(−∞,0) with Dirichlet boundary condition. When the nonlinear flux function is assumed to be strictly convex and the unique global entropy solution of the corresponding Riemann problem of the resulting scalar conservation laws consists of shock wave with negative speed, it is shown in this paper that the large time behavior of its global smooth solutions can be precisely described by the suitably shifted viscous shock profiles, where the time‐dependent shift function is uniquely determined by both the boundary value and the initial data. We also show that the shift function converge to a constant time asymptotically. Our analysis is based on weighted L2− energy method.
