Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.

Abstract:In this paper biopolymer chitosan was used as a matrix to fabricate cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) with a narrow size distribution under mild conditions, resulting in a novel QDs biocomposite. The CdS QDs, whose size can be controlled by varying the reaction time and precursor concentration, were characterized by TEM and XRD. The limitation on CdS particle growth and agglomeration by chitosan was suggested by UV–vis spectrum and TEM results. FTIR-attenuated total reflectance (ATR) revealed strong hydrogen bonding between the CdS QDs and chitosan via N2 and O3 groups. This interaction was also reflected in AFM, XRD and swelling study results. The chitosan-capped CdS QDs exhibited improved aqueous solubility and stability. On the other hand, in the presence of CdS QDs, the thermal decomposition of chitosan was shifted toward a higher temperature by about 50°C.

Abstract:Thioglycolic acid (TGA) capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with the diameter of 2–3nm were synthesized. The interaction between CdTe QDs and chymotrypsin (chy) was investigated by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption, fluorescence and resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) spectroscopy. Under pH 7.2, CdTe QDs effectively quenched the intrinsic fluorescence of chy via static quenching. The binding constants for the formation of a complex between CdTe QDs and chy were 2.85, 2.58, 2.48×103M−1 at 293, 298 and 303K, respectively. ΔS° (49.72kJmol−1) and ΔH° (−4.61kJmol−1) indicated that electrostatic attraction was the dominant intermolecular forces in stabilizing the complex. The interaction between CdTe QDs and chy lead to the remarkable enhancement of RRS and the enchantments were in proportional to the concentration of chy in a certain range. The reasons for the enhancement of RRS were discussed. The experimental results showed that chy molecules have a relatively high affinity with CdTe QDs.
Plasmon-Enhanced Surface-State Emission of CdSe Quantum Dots and Its Application to Microscale Luminescence Patterns

Abstract:In this paper, we report distinct enhancement of surface-state emissions (SSEs) of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) via coupling to localized plasmons (LPs) in Ag nanostructures. The roles of oleic acid (OA) ligand on QDs in the formation of Ag nanostructures and in the intense enhancement of SSEs of CdSe QDs are explored. We find that OA ligand on CdSe QDs plays a critical role in modifying the morphology of the contacted Ag, which consequently impacts the coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag. A systematic study of size effect of QDs on coupling of SSEs with LPs shows that as-deposited small Ag particles favorably enhance the SSEs of small-size CdSe QDs. The OA ligand on QDs yields better Ag crystallinity and clear corners during the annealing process; therefore, it promotes reshaping of small Ag particles into larger ones, favorable to enhance the SSEs of large-size CdSe QDs. The annealed QDs/Ag hybrid structures are more stable than the unannealed ones due to the loss of the OA ligand in the heating process. The selective coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag nanostructures allows feasible realization of microscale fluorescent color patterns. The approach of OA-assisted modification of plasmonic properties of Ag nanostructures provides a new route to synthesizing bright luminescence materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.
Variation of Raman spectra of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots at the bioconjugation

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents the results of comparative analysis of Raman scattering spectra of CdSe/ZnS QDs covered by polymer with and without bio‐conjugation to the mouse anti PSA (Prostate‐Specific Antigen) antibodies (mab). Commercial CdSe/ZnS QDs used in the study are characterized by the color emission with the maximum at 565 nm (2.19 eV) at 300 K. Raman scattering spectra measured at room temperature demonstrate two groups of peaks: i) related to the Si substrate at 230–460, 522, 610, 670, 940‐1040 cm –1 and 2) to polymer on the QD surface in the spectral range 1268–3310 cm –1 . It is revealed that the QD bio‐conjugation to the anti PSA mab is accompanied by the variation dramatically in the intensity of Raman lines of both types. The explanation of Raman peak stimulation in bio‐conjugated QDs has been proposed on the base of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract:Chitosan-coated CdSe quantum dots (CdSe/CS QDs) were successfully synthesized in aqueous system through a γ-radiation route at room temperature under ambient pressure. The diameter of the resulting QDs was about 4nm with narrow size distribution. The synthesized QDs exhibited an absorption peak at 460nm and an emission peak at 535nm. These QDs were cubic zinc blende CdSe in core structure and coated with chitosan on surface, with fine solubility in water.

Abstract:In weak acidic buffer medium, chitosan binding with an anionic surfactant, such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS), sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) or sodium dodecyl sulphonate (SDS), can result in a significant enhancement of resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) intensity. The results showed that under optimum conditions the enhanced RRS intensity is proportional to the concentration of chitosan in the range 0.10-20.0 microg/mL for SDBS, 0.27-15.0 microg/mL for SLS and 0.20-15.0 microg/mL for SDS. Among these, the sensitivity of SDBS is the highest and its detection limit for chitosan is 29 ng/mL, while those of SLS and SDS are 83 and 61 ng/mL, respectively. The method has good selectivity and was applied to the determination of trace amounts of chitosan in practical samples with satisfactory results. Therefore, a simple and convenient method with high sensitivity and selectivity for the determination of chitosan was established.

Ultrasensitive and Selective Detection of Cu2+ in Aqueous Solution with Fluorescence Enhanced CdSe Quantum Dots

Abstract:Trace Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution were detected with ultra-sensitivity and excellent selectivity by using CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with enhanced fluorescence properties as fluorescent reporters. CdSe QDs were first synthesized by using aqueous route with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) as capping agent. By further thermal-annealing the as-prepared 3-MPA capped CdSe QDs in the presence of imidazole (IM) under nitrogen atmosphere at 70°C, the fluorescence quantum yields of CdSe QDs in aqueous solution could be dramatically enhanced to be ∼10.9%. These CdSe QDs with enhanced fluorescence exhibited fast fluorescence response (within 1min), ultra-sensitivity and excellent selectivity toward Cu2+ ions over other metal ions in aqueous solution. The Cu2+-induced aggregation of CdSe QDs led to the significant fluorescence quenching of the CdSe QDs. The limit of detection (LOD) calculated for Cu2+ could reach as low as 0.13–0.16ppb (2.0–2.5nM). The co-existence of other metal ions did not interfere with the sensing of trace Cu2+ ions in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Monodisperse CdSe quantum dots were synthesized by TOPO assisted reaction in nonaqueous solution.The samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,size distribution histograms,UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.The results indicate that the monodisperse quantum dots exhibit zinc blende(cubic)diffraction patterns and high PL quantum yield.Moreover,the mechanism of formation of zinc blende structure was preliminarily discussed.

Abstract:In this study, water soluble Cu-doped CdS quantum dots (Cu:CdS QDs) were synthesized by one-pot method. The effect of reaction conditions on the Cu:CdS QDs were studied systematically, and the Cu:CdS QDs synthesized under optimizing condition possessed a small size (∼4 nm), high luminance and good self-fluorescence performance. Compared with CdS QDs, the fluorescence emission was redshifted from 627 nm to 720 nm. To reduce cytotoxicity of Cu:CdS QDs, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) molecules were selected to be grafting onto the surface of Cu:CdS QDs through amide bonds and the CMCS modification would greatly impede the release of cadmium ions. Both in vitro cellular cytotoxicity and hemolysis assay demonstrated that the CMCS/Cu:CdS QDs were highly biocompatible and the CMCS/Cu:CdS QDs as fluorescent probes were successfully applied in vivo imaging of small animals and this QDs can be easily metabolized by mice over time without adverse reactions. This new nanoprobes open up exciting opportunities for future biomedical applications.

Abstract:A facile approach to prepare CdSe/ZnS quantum dot-encapsulated chitosan hybrid nanospheres (CS-QD) is developed by utilizing ethanol-aided counterion complexation in aqueous solution. The obtained CS-QD hybrid nanospheres have not only the loading space provided by the chitosan spherical matrix for loading multiply QDs but also unique fluorescent properties provided by the encapsulated QDs. Moreover, these hybrid nanospheres possess good biocompatibility and optical stability in physiological environment. It is demonstrated that CS-QD hybrid nanospheres can be internalized by tumor cells and hence act as labeling agent in cell imaging by optical microscopy. In addition, CS-QD hybrid nanospheres can be used for imaging of tumor in tumor-bearing mice via intratumoral administration and can accumulate at tumor site via the blood circulation based on intravenous injection. Thus, on the one hand, chitosan nanospheres provide the protection in both colloidal and optical stability arising from QDs and offer biocompatibility. On the other hand, the encapsulated QDs light up polymer nanospheres and display the fate of polymer nanospheres in cells and bodies.

Abstract:The interaction between CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and hemoglobin (Hb) was investigated by ultraviolet and visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy. The intensity of UV-vis absorption spectrum of a mixture of CdSe QDs and Hb was obviously changed at the wavelength of 406nm at pH 7.0, indicating that CdSe QDs could bind with Hb. The influences of some factors on the interactions between CdSe QDs and Hb were studied in detail. The binding molar ratio of CdSe QDs and Hb was 12:1 by a mole-ratio method. The mechanism of the interaction between CdSe QDs and Hb was also discussed.

Abstract:High-quality CdSe quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized in a mixture of paraffin liquid and oleic acid (OA), and the effects of the synthetic conditions, including the growth temperature, precursor concentration, and initial OA:Cd molar ratio, on the optical properties of the as-prepared CdSe QDs were systematically investigated. The thermal stability and the effects of the nanocrystal (NC) purification on the optical properties of the as-prepared CdSe QDs were also studied for their further bioapplication. The results demonstrate that the CdSe QDs have good thermal stability and a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) after NC purification, which is very important for their bioapplication. Moreover, optically encoded microbeads have been successfully prepared by directly embedding the as-prepared oil soluble CdSe QDs into the carboxyl group-capped porous polystyrene (PS) beads through our route, which suggests their promising application in multiplexed bioassays.

Abstract:The water-soluble CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) have been prepared by using L-cysteine as stabilizer in aqueous phase. The optical properties of CdSe core and the influence of shell US and two-shelled CdS/ZnS on the CdSe core were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. As compared to the CdSe core, the absorption peaks and the maximum emission wavelengths of CdSe/CdS, CdSe/ CdS/ZnS core-shell structure showed a slight redshift. The remarkable emission enhancements in intensity were observed with factors of 3.7, 4.5 for CdSe/CdS and CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs, respectively. TEM, ED and XPS were used to characterize the size, shape and composition of prepared nanoparticles. The results of FTIR show that sulfur and oxygen atom in L-cysteine molecules take part in coordination with metal ions on the surface of the nanoparticles. These results disclose that the as prepared CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in this report have the superior chemical stability and favorable photoluminescence properties.

Abstract:Circular dichroism (CD) induced at exciton transitions by chiral ligands attached to single component and core/shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) was used to study the interactions between QDs and their capping ligands. Analysis of the CD line shapes of CdSe and CdS QDs capped with l-cysteine reveals that all of the features in the complex spectra can be assigned to the different excitonic transitions. It is shown that each transition is accompanied by a derivative line shape in the CD response, indicating that the chiral ligand can split the exciton level into two new sublevels, with opposite angular momentum, even in the absence of an external magnetic field. The role of electrons and holes in this effect could be separated by experiments on various types of core/shell QDs, and it was concluded that the induced CD is likely related to interactions of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the ligands with the holes. Hence, CD was useful for the analysis of hole level-ligand interactions in quantum semiconductor heterostructures, with promising outlook toward better general understanding the properties of the surface of such systems.

Abstract:The binding of different categories of molecules to quantum dot has been studied for many years through different spectroscopic techniques to elucidate details of binding mechanism. In this work we present the results of the study of the interactions between CdSe and poly(amidoamine) dendrimer monitored by photoluminescence spectroscopy of CdSe in chloroform. Dendrimers with different terminal groups and different generations were used to bind with CdSe nanocrystal of different size. Significant differences in the values of binding constant Kb(n) and KSV were found in these experiments. The binding constant for poly(amidoamine) dendrimer of generation 4.0 is higher as compared to generation 3.5. The interaction of CdSe with poly(amidoamine) dendrimer shows an increase of binding constants with increasing dendrimer generation from 2.0 to 4.0, as well as with decreasing CdSe diameter. From HRTEM and FTIR analysis, we suggest that dendrimer/CdSe interactions are primarily hydrogen-bonding.
Surface enhanced Raman scattering effect of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots hybridized with Au nanowire

Abstract:Functionalized CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were attached to the surface of Au nanowire (NW). Analysis of optical absorption spectra disclosed surface plasmon bands of Au NWs at 562 and 627 nm and showing an overlap with the QD absorption band. Micro Raman spectra (λex = 514 nm) of the QDs/Au single NW exhibited surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) peaks at 180, 205, and 277 cm−1, corresponding to surface, longitudinal, and transverse optical phonon modes, respectively. From time-resolved fluorescence spectra, the exciton lifetime of QDs decreased after hybridization with Au NW due to the energy transfer, supporting the SERS effect.

Abstract:The variation of photoluminescence (PL) spectra in CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) at the conjugation to antibodies (ABs) has been investigated and discussed in this paper. Two types of CdSe/ZnS QDs with different CdSe core sizes (5.4 and 6.4nm) and emissions (605 and 655nm) were studied before and after the conjugation to anti-Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and anti-Pseudo rabies virus (PRV) ABs. The PL high energy shift and asymmetric shape of PL bands have been detected in bioconjugated QDs. Note that the bioconjugation impact on spectral characteristics of CdSe/ZnS QD emission has been not studied yet in details. The surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect is revealed in bioconjugated CdSe/ZnS QDs. The SERS effect testifies that the excitation light used at the Raman study generates the electric dipoles in AB molecules. At the same time, the permanent position of LO-phonon Raman lines in Raman spectra of nonconjugated and bioconjugated QDs confirms that QD materials do not change at the bioconjugation. It is shown as well that the compressive strains do not play any role in the PL high energy shift in bioconjugated QDs. PL spectra of pure anti IL-10 ABs, anti PRV ABs, a phosphate buffer saline (PBS) and PL spectrum dependences versus excitation light intensities have been investigated as well. Finally, the PL spectrum transformation in bioconjugated QDs is attributed to varying the quantum confinement effect in CdSe/ZnS QDs and the energy band profiles in QD cores. Both these effects are stimulated by the electromagnetic field of excited AB dipoles. The obtained results can be useful for sensitivity improving the QD bio-sensors.

Abstract:In this paper,we systematically investigated the interaction between CdTe QDs and thiol-polyethylene glycol (PEG-SH) using capillary electrophoresis (CE) and fluorescence spectrometry. We found that PEG-SH was able to bind to CdTe QDs and form QDs-PEG-SH conjugates. The QDs-PEG-SH conjugates were well separated from QDs and PEG-SH reaction mixture by CE. The data demonstrated that PEG-SH possessed strong adsorption to QDs,and QDs-PEG-SH conjugates had showed good stability and fluorescent property,and had potential applications in biological and biomedical fields. Moreover,it also illustrated that CE was a useful tool to study the interaction of QDs with ligand molecules.
