Abstract:To extend the visible light response of ZnO, ZnO/CuO heterostructured nanocomposite was synthesized by a hydrothermal approach. At the same time, chitosan (Ch) is considered as a very promising natural polymer. It holds not only abundant resource and low cost, but also has excellent adsorption properties to a broad range of organic pollutants and some heavy metal ions. To improve the adsorption properties of ZnO/CuO nanocomposite, ZnO/CuO/chitosan organic-inorganic composites were prepared with precipitation method. The as-prepared nanocomposites were characterized by TEM (Transmission electron microscopy), SAED pattern (Selected Area Electron Diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), UV-Vis (Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy), PL (Photoluminescence), XRD (X-ray diffraction), TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra (FTIR) et al. To examine the surface and interface properties of nanocomposites, chemical prototype sensor arrays were constructed based on ZnO, ZnO/CuO, ZnO/Cu2O, ZnO/CuO/chitosan, ZnO/Cu2O/chitosan nanocomposites and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) arrays devices. The adsorption response behaviors of the sensor arrays to some typical volatile compounds were examined under similar conditions. The results indicated that with comparison to ZnO nanostructure, the ZnO/CuO nanocomposite exhibited enhanced adsorption properties to some typical volatile compounds greatly, and the adsorption properties of ZnO/CuO/chitosan are much better than that of ZnO/CuO nanocomposite. The adsorption of ZnO/CuO system is super to that of ZnO/Cu2O. Therefore, ZnO/CuO/chitosan nanocomposite not only showed broadening visible light response, but also possessed of excellent adsorption properties, and has good potential applications in photocatalysts, chemical sensors, biosensors, self-cleaning coating fields et al. Surface modification of ZnO/CuS heterostructured nanocomposite was carried out utilising the self-assembly process between hydroxyl groups of ZnO/CuS nanocomposite and carboxyl groups of water soluble chitosan. Comparative tests before and after surface modification were performed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To examine the surface and interface properties of nanocomposites, chemical prototype sensor arrays were constructed based on ZnO, ZnO/CuS nanocomposite, and ZnO/CuS nanocomposite modified with chitosan containing carboxyl groups and quartz crystal microbalance devices. The adsorption response behaviours of the sensor arrays to some typical volatile compounds were examined. The results indicated that, with comparison to ZnO nanostructure, the ZnO/CuS nanocomposite exhibited enhanced adsorption properties to some typical volatile compounds dramatically, and the effect of one layer modification on the surface adsorption properties of ZnO/CuS nanocomposite is also very evident and useful, which provides a microenvironment of biocompatibility for ZnO/CuS nanocomposite. At same time, ZnO/CuS nanocomposite showed broadening visible light response and hence has good potential applications in new energy materials, photocatalysts, chemical sensors, biosensors, photothermal therapy fields, etc.

Abstract:In this paper biopolymer chitosan was used as a matrix to fabricate cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) with a narrow size distribution under mild conditions, resulting in a novel QDs biocomposite. The CdS QDs, whose size can be controlled by varying the reaction time and precursor concentration, were characterized by TEM and XRD. The limitation on CdS particle growth and agglomeration by chitosan was suggested by UV–vis spectrum and TEM results. FTIR-attenuated total reflectance (ATR) revealed strong hydrogen bonding between the CdS QDs and chitosan via N2 and O3 groups. This interaction was also reflected in AFM, XRD and swelling study results. The chitosan-capped CdS QDs exhibited improved aqueous solubility and stability. On the other hand, in the presence of CdS QDs, the thermal decomposition of chitosan was shifted toward a higher temperature by about 50°C.

Abstract:In this study, porphyrin was prepared and doped with chitosan biopolymer using the solution casting process at various weight percentages (5 and 10 wt% CS-PP). The structural characteristics of the nanocomposite material were carefully examined using FTIR, SEM, and XRD. The presence of the distinctive chitosan peaks was confirmed by FTIR spectra; these peaks were altered by contact with porphyrin molecules. The chitosan surface displayed noticeable morphological changes on the SEM graphs, which result from surface interaction with porphyrin active sites. Moreover, XRD showed structural enhancement in the crystallinity of chitosan by incorporating porphyrin molecules. The nanocomposite films' optical characteristics, including refractive index, energy band gap, and optical dispersion parameters, were also investigated. It was observed that the band gap of pure chitosan is significantly reduced upon the addition of porphyrin nanocomposite. The increase of refractive index with increasing porphyrin nanocomposite doping is evidence for the formation of new energy states and thus decreasing the energy band gap of chitosan.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies. In particular, they are widely studied for photoelectric conversion, thanks to their low cost and high solar energy conversion efficiency. The majority of the QDs used in devices for photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation is based on heavy-metal containing materials, such as Pb and Cd. Unfortunately, the use of these materials hamper their prospective to be commercially developed due to health and environmental concerns. In this work, by using a template assisted cation exchange procedure, we developed eco-friendly CuInSe2/(CuInSexS1-x)(5)/CuInS2 QDs based on a gradient mull shell architecture, exhibiting tunable Near Infra-Red (NIR) optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) properties. The NIR QDs are used as sensitizer for mesoporous TiO2 and employed for PEC hydrogen production. The PEC device based on the gradient architecture showed a 200 % improvement compared to the simple core CuInSe2 QDs and 73 % compared to the core/shell structure. The enhancement is ascribed to favorable stepwise electronic band alignment and improved electron transfer rate with the incorporation of interfacial gradient layers. These results could pave the way for the synthesis of heavy-metal-free QDs, exhibiting broad application in emerging optoelectronic technologies.

Abstract:Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (a-PDT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive therapeutic modality that utilizes the combination of a photosensitive agent, molecular oxygen, and excitation light to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), demonstrating remarkable activity against multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. However, the effective use of conventional photosensitizers is significantly limited by a number of their shortcomings, namely, poor water solubility and low selectivity. Herein, we present a novel biocompatible water-soluble nanocomposite based on hydrophobic tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) molecules and hydrophilic ternary AgInS$_2$/ZnS quantum dots incorporated into a chitosan matrix as an improved photosensitizer for a-PDT. We demonstrated that TPP molecules could be successfully transferred into chitosan solution while remaining primarily in the form of monomers, which are capable of singlet oxygen generation. We performed a detailed analysis of the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between quantum dots and TPP molecules within the nanocomposite and proposed the mechanism of the singlet oxygen efficiency enhancement via FRET.

Abstract:Herein, we synthesized a CdSe quantum dots (QDs)-decorated ternary metal oxide nanocomposite of ZnO/TiO2/CuO through a simple hydrothermal method. The prepared nanocomposite exhibited monoclinic, hexagonal, and cubic phase structures in XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis. UV-vis absorbance spectra showed the broad absorption spectrum. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) clearly showed the presence of nanoparticles and confirmed the elements through elemental mapping. TEM (transmission electron microscopy) confirmed the nanostructure of metal oxides decorated with QDs. The average particle size was 45 nm for metal oxides and 7 nm for QDs. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) also confirmed the surface elemental composition. The prepared nanocomposites were introduced as photoanodes in DSSCs (dye-sensitized solar cells) and as photocatalysts for industrial dye solution. Among these samples, CdSe@CuO/TiO2/ZnO showed an improved performance of PCE (photon conversion efficiency) of 3.68% in DSSC and 96% photocatalytic degradation efficiency. It showed a recycling efficiency of ∼92% after 4 cycles against methylene blue (MB) organic dye under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Chitosan-coated CdSe quantum dots (CdSe/CS QDs) were successfully synthesized in aqueous system through a γ-radiation route at room temperature under ambient pressure. The diameter of the resulting QDs was about 4nm with narrow size distribution. The synthesized QDs exhibited an absorption peak at 460nm and an emission peak at 535nm. These QDs were cubic zinc blende CdSe in core structure and coated with chitosan on surface, with fine solubility in water.

Abstract:A new ternary system consisting of ZnO nanorod/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/CuInS2 quantum dots has been successfully prepared for photocatalytic application under visible light irradiation. Through the hybridization with the light harvesting material of CuInS2, as well as the conductivity medium RGO, the ternary composite achieves a greatly enhanced light absorption and charge transfer than that of the pristine ZnO. The photocatalytic performance of ZnO-RGO-CuInS2 is substantially elevated with an optimized content of 10% CuInS2 incorporated. The composite material of ZnO-RGO-10% CuInS2 can nearly completely degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) solution in 120 min, whereas bare ZnO itself can only degrade 20% RhB. The excellent photocatalytic performance of ZnO-RGO-CuInS2 demonstrates its promising in the photocatalytic or other extended applications. This work demonstrates a facile way to prepare integrative photosensitizer by taking advantage from the co-catalysts for more efficient and stable semiconductor based composite photocatalyst. Construction of a direct Z-scheme ZnS quantum dot (QD)-Fe2O3 QD heterojunction/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:A novel direct Z-scheme ZnS quantum dot (QD)-Fe2O3 QD heterojunction/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (GZxFy) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The surface of ZnS and Fe2O3 QDs was modified by -COOH and -OH groups, respectively. ZnS QDs can be covalently bonded with Fe2O3 QDs by the dehydration reaction to form the ZnS QDs-Fe2O3 QDs heterojunctions. The GZxFy nanocomposites displayed the highest photodegradation efficiency of 96.45% (40 min, UV light) and 90.17% (480 min, visible light) for methylene blue when the mass ratio of ZnS QDs to Fe2O3 QDs was 1:3. The excellent photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting ability, high large specific surface area, efficient interfacial charge-carrier separation and transfer as well as the low charge transfer resistance. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and radical trapping experiments were used to confirm the Z-scheme mechanism formed between ZnS QDs and Fe2O3 QDs, and verify the electron transfer direction for UV or visible light-driven photocatalytic reactions. GZ1F3 nanocomposites showed the excellent superparamagnetic behavior, which enabled its rapid magnetic recycle from the solution within 95 s in a magnetic field.

Abstract:A facile approach to prepare CdSe/ZnS quantum dot-encapsulated chitosan hybrid nanospheres (CS-QD) is developed by utilizing ethanol-aided counterion complexation in aqueous solution. The obtained CS-QD hybrid nanospheres have not only the loading space provided by the chitosan spherical matrix for loading multiply QDs but also unique fluorescent properties provided by the encapsulated QDs. Moreover, these hybrid nanospheres possess good biocompatibility and optical stability in physiological environment. It is demonstrated that CS-QD hybrid nanospheres can be internalized by tumor cells and hence act as labeling agent in cell imaging by optical microscopy. In addition, CS-QD hybrid nanospheres can be used for imaging of tumor in tumor-bearing mice via intratumoral administration and can accumulate at tumor site via the blood circulation based on intravenous injection. Thus, on the one hand, chitosan nanospheres provide the protection in both colloidal and optical stability arising from QDs and offer biocompatibility. On the other hand, the encapsulated QDs light up polymer nanospheres and display the fate of polymer nanospheres in cells and bodies.

Abstract:An iron oxide nanosystem (Fe 3 O 4 Nps) encapsulated with chitosan under the adsorption of hexadecafluorozinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcP 16 ) was developed. The synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 Nps was carried out through coprecipitation, followed by coating the nanoparticles with chitosan and incorporation with ZnPcP 16 . To understand and describe the mechanism of action of Fe 3 O 4 Nps-Chitosan-ZnPcP 16 , we use a variety of physicochemical characterization approaches. Electron microscopy results confirmed the monodispersity of the nanoparticles (13.2 ± 2.3 nm). Size distribution and surface charge (zeta potential) were determined by a dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyzer. VSM measurements confirmed its magnetic properties (1.18 emu.g −1 ). XDR confirmed the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles. UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectra were used to evaluate the photophysical behavior of ZnPcP 16 and Fe 3 O 4 Nps-Chitosan-ZnPcP 16 . These studies have demonstrated good results through synthesizing Fe3O4Nps-Chitosan-ZnPcP 16 , which could be a promising candidate for applications in photodynamic therapy.

Abstract:The presence of artificial dyes in water poses a significant environmental concern due to their detrimental impact on water quality. As a result, photodegradation has gained popularity as an effective method for water treatment to remove these pollutants. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) is a semiconductor widely recognized for its exceptional optical properties, which make it highly suitable for optoelectronic devices. In addition, CdS possesses photocatalytic properties, allowing it to initiate chemical reactions when exposed to light. This study focuses on investigating CdS photocatalytic activity through surface modifications using chitosan (Ch) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for the degradation of Acid Orange 7. The interfacing of chitosan into the CdS structure leads to significant improvements in its photocatalytic performance. The CdS/rGO composite exhibits outstanding photocatalytic efficiency (14.92%) compared to CdS/Ch/rGO (89.26%), primarily due to the synergistic effects of CdS and chitosan. This finding highlights the immense potential of chitosan as a highly effective modifier for enhancing photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the manuscript provides insights into the structural characterization, kinetic and isotherm studies of the CdS composites. The experimental results validate the successful interfacing of CdS nanoparticles with chitosan and reduced graphene oxide. By harnessing the beneficial impact of chitosan in the CdS semiconductor, this research paves the way for the developing more efficient solutions to mitigate environmental pollution and improve water quality. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the photocatalytic reactions followed the pseudo-second-order model.

Chitosan polymers randomly labeled with pyrene: synthesis, photophysics, and selective quenching by metal cations and anions

Abstract:The synthesis together with a comprehensive electronic spectral and photophysical study of two chitosan polymers randomly labeled with different degrees of pyrene were here undertaken. The polymers, denoted as ChiNPy-A and ChiNPy-B, have different degrees of substitution with pyrene (%DSPy), with values of 0.5 and 4.5, respectively. The resulting polymers consist in four distinct units, including the deacetylated and acetylated units and the grafted imine and amine pyrene units, obtained by a Schiff base formation reaction and subsequent reduction, respectively. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements in aqueous solution revealed triple exponential decay fits that characterizes the fluorescence properties of the amine- and imine-pyrene-linked units, as well as self-quenching of pyrene units. The ChiNPy polymer showed fluorescence quenching of its pyrene amine units, with lead (II) and mercury (II) exhibiting the highest degree of fluorescence quenching. From Stern-Volmer type plots, two distinct populations of fluorophores were observed. These findings emphasize the potential of chitosan pyrene-labeled polymers as sensitive fluorescent probes, particularly for detecting metal cations.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, amphiphilic chitosan derivatives (N-octyl-N-mPEG-chitosan, mPEG = poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether; OPEGC) were successfully synthesised via the Schiff base reduction reaction of chitosan and mPEG-aldehyde, or octanal, with chitosan acting as the backbone of the grafted copolymers, and mPEG-aldehyde providing the hydrophilic chain or octanal providing the hydrophobic alkyl chain. The synthesis was confirmed by characterisation employing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H NMR. In the subsequent procedure, water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) and iron(II,III) oxide (IO) nanoparticles, widely used as nanoprobes in medical applications, were produced by the incorporation of QDs or IO inside the polymeric micelle core. Finally, the optical properties of QDs incorporated into OPEGC (OPEGC@QDs) were characterised by UV-VIS spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, cell viability was obtained through MTT, and the morphology of their assembly formed in water were observed by atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) and the QDs content of OPEGC@QDs was calculated following thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, the properties of IO incorporated into OPEGC (OPEGC@IO) were characterised by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), FT-IR, MTT, TGA, AFM, and TEM. The results indicated that the OPEGC composite nanoparticles with size narrowly distributed, good water solubility, and low cytotoxicity were prepared here, which represented a high quantum yield or good super-paramagnetism.

Abstract:This study explores the extraction of chitosan (CH) from Sepia brevimana cuttlebone. The CH is then exposed to gamma irradiation to convert it into low molecular weight chitosan (GIR-LMW-CH). The degree of deacetylation (DDA), which is 94.2%, is conclusively confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). By using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS), the molecular weight (MW) of the isolated CH is determined to be 697.4 Da. Then, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposites are created using the GIR-LMW-CH. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the ZnO generated using the sol–gel technique had a particle size of about 13 nm. The synthesized ZnO-CH nanocomposites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, which revealed a hydrodynamic size of 16 nm. This nanocomposite's photocatalytic activity is assessed using both anionic methyl orange (MO) and cationic methylene blue (MB) dyes. ZnO-GIR-LMW-CH, which was synthesized, has an exceptional decomposition efficiency, accomplishing 98.93% degradation of MB in just 1.5 h and an astounding 99.27% degradation of MO in 4.5 h. The effect of photocatalyst amount and its recyclability efficiency was also evaluated.
