Abstract:This article introduces the research progress of the application of nanomaterials,including carbon nanotubes,carbon nanofibers and organoclays in hierarchical carbon fiber/epoxy composites.The preparation,processing technology and properties of the hierarchical composites are reviewed.Present research has demonstrated that the nanomaterials can improve the mechanical properties of conventional composites,especially the interlayer shear strength,fatigue resistance,hot-humidity aging resistance and barrier property.Therefore,the study and application of hierarchical carbon fiber/epoxy composites have attracted great research interests.

Abstract:To further improve the mechanical and functional properties, 1D nanostructures served as nanoreinforcements are usually introduced into C/C composites. This review intends to provide a comprehensive review on the advanced research activities associated with 1D nanostructures reinforced C/C composites, including different methods to introduce various 1D nanostructures, the microstructures, mechanical and functional properties of composites. Carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix (carbon/carbon, C/C) composites have become the promising candidates for high‐temperature thermal structure materials in aerospace fields, owning to a series of excellent structural merits. However, for aculeate or thin‐walled C/C composites, due to the fact that continuous carbon fibers are cut off during the machining process and the amount of residual carbon fibers is limited, carbon matrix cannot be effectively strengthened just by using carbon fibers, resulting in a sharp decline in mechanical performance. Furthermore, the rapid development of aerospace vehicles requires that C/C composites not only have excellent mechanical properties but also possess multifunctional properties. To effectively solve these problems and meet the increasing demands, various 1D nanostructures as nanoreinforcements have been introduced into C/C composites, achieving the great improvement in mechanical and functional properties. In this review, the state‐of‐the‐art research activities regarding different 1D nanoreinforcements applied in C/C composites are systematically summarized. Finally, this review is concluded and the future research prospects are proposed. This review provides the "1D nanoreinforcements" strategy to further improve the properties of C/C composites, which could be widely used for reference by researchers in the fields of different fiber/matrix composites.

Abstract:Continuous fiber reinforced composites are widely used in aerospace,automobile manufacturing,smart materials and other fields due to their excellent mechanical properties,flexible design,corrosion resistance,fatigue resistance and a series of advantages.The traditional continuous fiber reinforced composite manufacturing process limits its application in complex structures due to high production costs and process complexity,and the increasing maturity of 3D printing technology provides the possibility to manufacture lightweight and complex continuous fiber reinforced structures.This paper first introduces the printing raw materials and printing methods of continuous fiber reinforced composites,summarizes the influence of different processes on the printing process and results,then analyzes its application prospects in different fields,and finally discusses the current research problems and looks forward to the future development of continuous fiber reinforced composites 3D printing.

Abstract:Carbon fiber multi-scale reinforcements modified by carbon nanomaterials like carbon nanotube,graphene,and carbon nanofiber,could be achieved through methods such as chemical vapor deposition,chemical grafting,electrochemical deposition,composite sizing,and grafting to.The effect of carbon fiber multi-scale reinforcements on the mechanical properties of interface of composites was also reviewed.According to the advantages and disadvantages of carbon fiber multi-scale reinforcements,the interaction strength between carbon fiber and carbon nanomaterials should be improved through the design of the carbon fiber/carbon nanomaterials interface.Graphene oxide/carbon fiber multi-scale reinforcements and its enhancement on the composite properties will be the focus of future research.The continuous preparation of carbon fiber multi-scale reinforcements will also become an important developing direction.

Abstract:Since their first observation nearly a decade ago by Iijima (Iijima S. Helical microtubules of graphitic carbon Nature. 1991; 354:56–8), carbon nanotubes have been the focus of considerable research. Numerous investigators have since reported remarkable physical and mechanical properties for this new form of carbon. From unique electronic properties and a thermal conductivity higher than diamond to mechanical properties where the stiffness, strength and resilience exceeds any current material, carbon nanotubes offer tremendous opportunities for the development of fundamentally new material systems. In particular, the exceptional mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes, combined with their low density, offer scope for the development of nanotube-reinforced composite materials. The potential for nanocomposites reinforced with carbon tubes having extraordinary specific stiffness and strength represent tremendous opportunity for application in the 21st century. This paper provides a concise review of recent advances in carbon nanotubes and their composites. We examine the research work reported in the literature on the structure and processing of carbon nanotubes, as well as characterization and property modeling of carbon nanotubes and their composites.

Abstract:In recent years, carbon composite materials are used more and more widely, and the technology is more and more mature. Among the carbon fiber composites, one material has become an important structural material in the aerospace field, which is carbon fiber epoxy resin composite material (CFERCM). Since the advent of CFERCM, it has been developed into an ideal structural material because of its high strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, high modulus and so on. In order to have a better understanding of the properties and applications of CFERCM, this paper mainly uses research method of review, systematically summarizes the development and applications in the field of aerospace and aviation to display the relationship between its properties and applications, showing the characteristic of CFERCM. As for the development, it mainly includes the history, preparation and properties of CFERCM. After that, this paper introduces two main fields of application, which are aerospace and aviation. Finally, some prospects of CFERCM in the future are presented and suggested for further studies. This paper concludes that CFERCM is a new, relatively simple to prepare, excellent structural material, it is widely used, especially in the field of aerospace.

Abstract:As an excellent candidate for lightweight structural materials and nonmetal electrical conductors, carbon nanotube reinforced carbon matrix (CNT/C) composites have potential use in technologies employed in aerospace, military, and defense endeavors, where the combinations of light weight, high strength, and excellent conductivity are required. Both polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) methods have been widely studied for CNT/C composite fabrications with diverse focuses and various modifications. Progress has been reported to optimize the performance of CNT/C composites from broad aspects, including matrix densification, CNT alignment, microstructure control, and interface engineering, etc. Recent approaches, such as using resistance heating for PIP or CVI, contribute to the development of CNT/C composites. To deliver a timely and up-to-date overview of CNT/C composites, we have reviewed the most recent trends in fabrication processes, summarized the mechanical reinforcement mechanism, and discussed the electrical and thermal properties, as well as relevant case studies for high-temperature applications. Conclusions and perspectives addressing future routes for performance optimization are also presented. Hence, this review serves as a rundown of recent advances in CNT/C composites and will be a valuable resource to aid future developments in this field.

Abstract:Carbon/Carbon composites are advanced materials composed of carbon fibers and other carbon materials (graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, pyrolytic carbon, etc.). Due to the diverse structures and excellent properties of carbon fibers and other carbon-based materials, they have attracted widespread attention from scholars at home and abroad. Copper-carbon/carbon composites have gained widespread application in aerospace, electronic packaging, thermal management materials, high-speed rail transportation, and biomedical fields. Current laboratory studies indicate that these composites exhibit a friction coefficient of approximately 0.3, with flexural and tensile strengths reaching 150 MPa and 500 MPa respectively, and an overall thermal conductivity of about 600 W/m•K. Future research is expected to further optimize and enhance their fabrication methods, as well as their physical, mechanical, and biological properties. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of copper-carbon/carbon composites formed by combining copper with carbon fibers and other carbonaceous materials. It introduces several novel fabrication techniques, offering valuable references for research on copper-carbon/carbon composites. Additionally, the article discusses the future development trends of these advanced composite materials.

Abstract:3D-printed carbon fiber composites hold significant potential in aerospace applications because of their lightweight, high strength and complex structure fabrication capabilities. However, additive manufacturing characteristics such as high porosity, anisotropy and continuous fiber content significantly affect the mechanical properties of printed parts. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of hybrid printing of short and continuous carbon fibers on the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of composites and to develop a model to predict elastic properties considering porosity. First, mechanical testing and characterization of short and continuous fiber reinforced polyamide (nylon) print filaments are performed. The results indicate that the elastic modulus and ultimate strength of continuous carbon fiber filaments reach 60 GPa and 1500 MPa, respectively, while the strength and elastic modulus of short carbon fiber filaments reach 60 MPa and 1 GPa, respectively. Then tensile specimens with different continuous fiber orientations and different continuous fiber placement sequences are printed and tested using a multi-material 3D printing technique. The specimens are characterized before and after testing using scanning electron microscopy and microscopy to assess the porosity and failure mechanisms of specimens with different configurations. The results show that the mechanical properties of the printed parts are much lower than those of the print filaments, which proves the serious negative impact of the material extrusion process on the mechanical properties of the printed structural parts. Finally, an analytical method for predicting the elastic behavior of printed composites is developed by introducing the porosity factor in the volume-averaged stiffness model. For continuous and short fiber filled composites with different fiber contents and printing orientations, the predicted results are in agreement with the experiments, and the prediction error is greatly reduced from 30% to less than 5%.

Abstract:Abstract Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are high-performance materials used extensively in aerospace and defense industries. Researchers have added various nanoscale materials to FRPs for improving their mechanical properties and to prepare multifunctional composites. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with their high strength, high modulus, and large aspect ratio have emerged as a frontrunner in the nano-reinforcements, and there is a large volume of published research on this topic. This article provides an extensive review of key publications covering topics of fabrication methods, enhancement of mechanical properties, and applications of CNT-modified FRP materials in structural health monitoring. A description of the main methods of adding CNTs into FRP materials, including dispersion in the resin and film lay-up, is presented. A key focus of the review is the effect of CNTs on the mechanical properties of FRP composites, including interlaminar fracture toughness, impact resistance, and fatigue properties. Since CNTs have self-sensing properties, there is potential to use CNTs for nondestructive identification (NDI) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of composite structures. Finally, a discussion of the problems that might be encountered during the use of CNTs as nano-reinforcements in FRP, and the future application potential of CNT-modified FRP materials is reported.

Abstract:The superb mechanical and physical properties of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have provided the impetus for researchers in developing high-performance continuous fibers based upon CNTs. The reported high specific strength, specific stiffness and electrical conductivity of CNT fibers demonstrate the potential of their wide application in many fields. In this review paper, we assess the state of the art advances in CNT-based continuous fibers in terms of their fabrication methods, characterization and modeling of mechanical and physical properties, and applications. The opportunities and challenges in CNT fiber research are also discussed.

Abstract:Five kinds of carbon-carbon composites used in aerospace, aircraft, photovoltaics, powder metallurgy and high temperature furnaces are reviewed, whose preforms were fabricated by needle piercing, orthogonal three-direction weaving, radial weaving, axial weaving and puncture. The physical, mechanical, thermal, ablation, and wear properties and service life were compared with corresponding materials from overseas manufacturers. Correlations between the performance, type of preform and carbon matrix, and interfacial bonding state was obtained. These analyses and comparisons can lay a foundation for the construction of a database-sharing platform for C/C composites in engineering applications. Research efforts need to be focused on the fine structure and gradient design of preforms and the optimum combination of different carbon matrices for the improvement of C/C composites.
