Abstract:Non-thermal processing technology has shown unparalleled advantages in improving food quality and safety, making it develop rapidly in recent years and become a new research hotspot in food processing. Food irradiation, a typical non-thermal food processing technology, has the advantages of rapid, efficient, low-cost, and pollution-free, which has received extensive attention and gradually become one of the widely accepted modern food processing methods. Especially in recent years, with the deepening of related research, food irradiation has made remarkable research progress in food preservation, sterilization, and degradation of harmful substances, showing a broad application prospect. In view of this, this article introduces the mechanism and characteristics of food irradiation technology in detail, reviews its related research on improving food nutritional value and reducing harmful substances, and illustrates to clarify the application potential of food irradiation technology in improving food quality and safety. The development direction of food irradiation technology was further discussed to provide theoretical guidance and reference for its further development and application in the food industry.

Abstract:Decontamination of barley seedling powder by 60 Co γ -ray and effect on its nutritional components were studied. Results showed that irradiation was very effective in killing microorganisms in barley seedling powder. The population of microorganisms, such as aerobic bacterial count, moulds and coliform bacteria, decreased with increase of irradiation dose. The D_ 10 values for aerobic bacterial count, moulds and coliform bacteria were 3.18 kGy, 4.55 kGy and 2.32 kGy, respectively. Barley seedling powder, irradiated with 11 kGy, did not have obvious changes in main chemical components, including protein, total polysaccharide, free amino acid, crude fiber, while vitamin E reduced by 38%. It may be concluded that the treatment of irradiation sterilization can increase barley seedling powder quality-guarantee period much longer. The suggested optimal doses are from 7.5 to 11 kGy.

Abstract:Food irradiation provides an effective means for controlling the physiological processes causing spoilage and for eradication of microbes, insect pests and parasites. Irradiation has multipurpose role in food processing and is applicable for a variety of food commodities such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, spices, meat, poultry and seafood. Several years of scientific research, evaluation, and testing have resulted in regulatory approvals for the food irradiation technology in a number of countries. Commercial application of this technology has greatly advanced in recent years following the approval of the health authorities of different countries. This review summarises the applications of irradiation technology in controlling pathogens and food spoilage, and the development of irradiation treatment worldwide.

Abstract:This review will look at the irradiation-based food preservation method. A country’s ability to successfully adopt new technologies hinges on the availability of a suitable infrastructure. Irradiation has a low operating cost and utilizes minimal energy, but it requires significant capital investments and a minimum output volume to be economical. Over a specific threshold concentration, off tastes might develop and organoleptic changes can occur. At low quantities, however, not all pathogens and their poisons will be eliminated. Radiation therapy can be difficult to standardize because the results vary. How effectively the therapy works depends on several factors, including the commodity and cultivar, radiation dose, level of maturity, physiological status, temperature and environment before and after treatment, pre-and post-harvest treatments, and the sensitivity of the microorganisms to be controlled. Tolerance varies with the maturity level. Depending on public perception, regulatory actions, economics, and logistics associated with specific conditions, irradiation as a method of reducing foodborne diseases will be used. Not all foods can be irradiated in all situations due to technological and financial restrictions. Irradiation cannot indefinitely extend the shelf life of fresh food because the enzymes in foods like fruits, vegetables, fish, shellfish, meat, and poultry are still active and resistant to even high-dose radiation. If foods are exposed to too much radiation, they may lose flavor, especially if they are high in fat. Irradiated grains and legumes must be packaged carefully to prevent insect infestations because irradiation does not leave behind any harmful residue that would deter insects. Irradiation produces very little chemical changes in food, and the changes are similar to those by other preservation methods like heat. The application of irradiation technology will benefit farmers whose post-harvest grain lost value as a result of food spoilage, consumers who experience health problems as a result of virus exposure, exporters of such cereals, and ultimately the government, which gains economically from the hard cash generated. It will also benefit firms that package food, extension agents, technical assistants, and researchers. Radiation processing of food has been approved by various international statutory bodies and organizations to ensure ‘Food Security & Safety’, and overcome ‘Technical barrier to International Trade’ and currently is being practiced in more than 60 countries worldwide.

Abstract:While food borne pathogens constitute a major public health problem world-wide, food post-harvest losses is considered to be the leading cause of hunger and malnutrition globally. Food irradiation is a process of preserving food in which food are exposed to appropriate doses of ionizing radiation in order to kill insects, molds and other potentially harmful microbes and allergens. The process involves carefully exposing food to a measured amount of ionizing radiation in a special processing room on a conveyor belt for a specified duration. The radiation sources could be gamma ray, electron beam or X-ray. The radiation doses could be high, low or medium depending on the products to be irradiated and the target organism to be eradicated. Irradiation technology has various applications including sprout inhibition in root and tubers, disinfestation in cereals and pulses, reduction or elimination of food borne pathogens in vegetables and animal products and delayed ripening of fruits. All these applications are intended to increase shelf life and eliminate food allegenicity. Despite consumer concern on the safety and quality of irradiated foods, it is gradually gaining acceptance due to increased awareness and the perceived safety and quality as symbolized by the Radura symbol. With the increasing acceptance and commercialization of food irradiation, it could play an important role in solving the problems of food insecurity and food borne illnesses in the world.

Abstract:Food irradiation is a proven method commonly used for enhancing the safety and quality of meat. This technology effectively reduces the growth of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites. It also increases the lifespan and quality of products by delaying spoilage and reducing the growth of microorganisms. Irradiation does not affect the sensory characteristics of meats, including color, taste, and texture, as long as the appropriate dose is used. However, its influence on the chemical and nutritional aspects of meat is complex as it can alter amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins as well as generate free radicals that cause lipid oxidation. Various factors, including irradiation dose, meat type, and storage conditions, influence the impact of these changes. Irradiation can also affect the physical properties of meat, such as tenderness, texture, and water-holding capacity, which is dose-dependent. While low irradiation doses potentially improve tenderness and texture, high doses negatively affect these properties by causing protein denaturation. This research also explores the regulatory and public perception aspects of food irradiation. Although irradiation is authorized and controlled in many countries, its application is controversial and raises concerns among consumers. Food irradiation is reliable for improving meat quality and safety but its implication on the chemical, physical, and nutritional properties of products must be considered when determining the appropriate dosage and usage. Therefore, more research is needed to better comprehend the long-term implications of irradiation on meat and address consumer concerns.

Abstract:We reviewed the principles,main characteristics and development processes of food irradiation technology and its application in bee products.And we presented the regulations and standards of food irradiation technology,particularly evaluation of radiated food safety and detection method of irradiated food.Bee products are functional foods of highly biological activities and thermolability.Choosing appropriate irradiation conditions,bee products could be thoroughly sterilized,also could keep the original compositions and functions in a longer period.At present,domestic and international research on detection methods for radiated bee products is still in its infancy.In order to improve the safety of irradiated bee products,the research on the radiation detection of bee products is particularly urgent.

Abstract:Food irradiation is over 100 years old, with the original patent for X-ray treatment of foods being issued in early 1905, 20 years after there discovery by W. C. Roentgen in 1885. Since then, food irradiation technology has become one of the most extensively studied food processing technologies in the history of mankind. Unfortunately, it is the one of the most misunderstood technologies with the result that there are rampant misunderstandings of the core technology, the ideal applications, and how to use it effectively to derive the maximum benefits. There are a number of books, book chapters, and review articles that provide overviews of this technology [25, 32, 36, 39]. Over the last decade or so, the technology has come into greater focus because many of the other pathogen intervention technologies have been unable to provide sustainable solutions on how to address pathogen contamination in foods. The uniqueness of food irradiation is that this technology is a non-thermal food processing technology, which unto itself is a clear high-value differentiator from other competing technologies.

Abstract:Agricultural food commodities are highly susceptible to contamination by fungi and mycotoxins, which cause great economic losses and threaten public health. New technologies such as gamma ray irradiation, ultraviolet radiation, electron beam irradiation, microwave irradiation, pulsed light, pulsed electric fields, plasma, ozone, etc. can solve the problem of fungal and mycotoxin contamination which cannot be effectively solved by traditional food processing methods. This paper summarizes recent advancements in emerging food decontamination technologies used to control various fungi and their associated toxin contamination in food. It discusses the problems and challenges faced by the various methods currently used to control mycotoxins, looks forward to the new trends in the development of mycotoxin degradation methods in the future food industry, and proposes new research directions.

Abstract:Food irradiation is a technology to treat foods with ionizing radiation such as gamma rays and electron beams to improve the safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects and by prevention of sprouting. The food irradiated with ionizing radiation is named as “irradiated food.” Ionizing radiation can treat packaged foods and fresh and/or frozen products and effectively and uniformly treat all portions of foods. Many international organizations have approved the safety and usefulness of food irradiation. Food irradiation is an environmentally friendly technology without usage of chemicals and contributes to the solution of food security and food sanitary problems especially reducing postharvest losses of foods and controlling foodborne illness, as an alternative to chemical fumigation with ethylene oxide and methyl bromide gasses. Japan has a 50-year history of food irradiation research. It was legally authorized to irradiate potatoes for preventing germination in 1972, and since 1974 irradiated potatoes have been shipped from the Shihorocho Agricultural Cooperative Association in Hokkaido. Recently, commercial food irradiation has increased significantly in Asia; however, Japan is now far behind other countries, and it is called a “food irradiation underdeveloped country.” To break through the current backward situation, this chapter introduces the latest and objective fact related to food irradiation based on scientific data.

Abstract:Iron is an essential mineral element of animals. Iron from milk can not satisfy the normal requirements of piglets. Unless other effective ferrous supplement methods, piglets are inclined to occurrence of anemia and many other diseases. Compared to inorganic or simply organic iron, amino acid chelated iron has such virtues as higher bioactivity, lower pollution and higher safety. This paper will focus on the absorption mechanism, bioactivity, relations with other mineral elements and application effect of amino acid chelated iron.

Abstract:Recent pathogen incidents have forced food industry to seek for alternative processes in postharvest pasteurization of agricultural commodities. Radio frequency (RF) heating has been used as one alternative treatment to replace chemical fumigation and other conventional thermal methods since it is relatively easy to apply and leaves no chemical residues. RF technology transfers electromagnetic energy into large bulk volume of the products to provide a fast and volumetric heating. There are two types of RF technology commonly applied in lab and industry to generate the heat energy: free running oscillator and 50-Ω systems. Several reviews have been published to introduce the application of RF heating in food processing. However, few reviews have a comprehensive summary of RF treatment for pasteurizing agricultural products. The objective of this review was to introduce the developments in the RF pasteurization of agricultural commodities and to present future directions of the RF heating applications. While the recent developments in the RF pasteurization were presented, thermal death kinetics of targeted pathogens as influenced by water activity, pathogen species and heating rates, non-thermal effects of RF heating, combining RF heating with other technologies for pasteurization, RF heating uniformity improvements using computer simulation and development of practical RF pasteurization processes were also focused. This review is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of RF pasteurization for agricultural products and promote the industrial-scale applications of RF technology with possible process protocol optimization purposes.

Abstract:The poultry industry is dynamically advancing production by focusing on nutrition, management practices, and technology to enhance productivity by improving feed conversion ratios, disease control, lighting management, and exploring antibiotic alternatives. Infrared (IR) radiation is utilized to improve the well-being of humans, animals, and poultry through various operations. IR radiation occurs via electromagnetic waves with wavelengths ranging from 760 to 10,000 nm. The biological applications of IR radiation are gaining significant attention and its utilization is expanding rapidly across multiple sectors. Various IR applications, such as IR heating, IR spectroscopy, IR thermography, IR beak trimming, and IR in computer vision, have proven to be beneficial in enhancing the well-being of humans, animals, and birds within mechanical systems. IR radiation offers a wide array of health benefits, including improved skin health, therapeutic effects, anticancer properties, wound healing capabilities, enhanced digestive and endothelial function, and improved mitochondrial function and gene expression. In the realm of poultry production, IR radiation has demonstrated numerous positive impacts, including enhanced growth performance, gut health, blood profiles, immunological response, food safety measures, economic advantages, the mitigation of hazardous gases, and improved heating systems. Despite the exceptional benefits of IR radiation, its applications in poultry production are still limited. This comprehensive review provides compelling evidence supporting the advantages of IR radiation and advocates for its wider adoption in poultry production practices.

Abstract:Food sterilization is one of the indispensable steps in food processing. This Paper reviewed the development of new sterilization technologies and equipments in food industry, which mainly introduced the development, characteristics and application of 5 new sterilization technologies, including ultra-high pressure sterilization, microwave sterilization, high-voltage pulsed electric field sterilization, radiation sterilization and pulse light sterilization. These new sterilization technologies, especially cold sterilization, can better preserve the quality and flavor of foods and ensure food safety.
