Abstract:The Imperial Examination System(IES) is a world-famous and highly influential heritage of Chinese civilization.The theory of "governing the state by the talented and virtuous" or "ruling the state by the elite" is the rationale behind this system.In a sense,IES could be regarded as China's "fifth invention".Around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,the abolition of IES was an inevitable result and a typical case of the conflict of Eastern and Western civilizations.It is argued that IES was abolished more because of that special time than because of IES's own problems,and that the abolition of IES at the end of the Qing Dynasty under the impact of the time and history does not mean that IES should be denied for ever.Despite its numerous limitations and defects,IES played a significant role in Chinese history and made great contributions to the advancement of human civilization.IES is a cultural heritage well worth treasuring.

Abstract:The imperial examination system in history was not so dark as what it is thought of by the modern people. Therefore, it is necessary to reappraise this system because of the incomplete and non-objective understanding and knowledge of it in the past. The prejudice today comes from the negative attitude towards it prevailing in the late Qinng Dynasty. In fact, many famous scholars in history, from the Sui and Tang Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, praised this system, and many of them regarded this system as "the most fair" one. To redress this system has already become an ideological trend in the contemporary Chinese academia. A study of this system is beneficial for our better understanding of the characteristics of Chinese society and the destiny of Chinese traditional culture. At the same time, we can draw a historical lesson from it for the present examination reform.

Abstract:The Qianlong era was the period of the Qing Dynasty when the most imperial examination reforms were carried out. In order to change the utilitarian attitude of scholars and reverse the increasingly serious fraud in the imperial examinations, policymakers, represented by the emperor, systematically reformed the number of scholars passing provincial examinations, timing of metropolitan examinations, and types of questions and contents of provincial and metropolitan examinations, on different scales and to various degrees. These reforms took place under the influence of a combination of factors, such as high national strength and social stability, the sustained existence of the dynasty, the emperor’s strong will for reforms and his resoluteness. Subsequently, the system of the three types of examinations was finalized and remained in place until the end of the Qing Dynasty, exerting a far-reaching impact. Generally speaking, most of the reforms in the Qianlong era produced remarkable results, such as alleviating the pressure on examination candidates, raising the objectivity, comparability and fairness of the examinations and facilitating the prosperity and development of the poetry of the Qing Dynasty. However, the reforms also had many shortcomings, producing some negative effects, such as increasing the burden of studying and reducing the distinctiveness, professionalism and practicality of the examinations.

Abstract:At the beginning of the 20th century,the abolition of imperial examination system promoted the development of modern educational system in the rural areas,and meanwhile,it intensified the rural educational contradiction and conflict.School destruction is a group aggro to destroy new education.During the ten years at the end of Qing Dynasty,school destruction accidents happened frequently in all rural areas,nearly covering all over the country,which affected the starting rural educational modernization greatly.For several decades,the conflict between the new and old education has not been solved well all the time,which has been puzzling the Chinese rural education and become one of the important reasons halting steps of the early modernization of rural education.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the collapse of the Qing dynasty (1644–1912) through the lens of the Structural Demographic Theory (SDT), a general framework for understanding the drivers of socio-political instability in state-level societies. Although a number of competing ideas for the collapse have been proposed, none provide a comprehensive explanation that incorporates the interaction of all the multiple drivers involved. We argue that the four-fold population explosion peaking in the 19th century, the growing competition for a stagnant number of elite positions, and increasing state fiscal stress combined to produce an increasingly disgruntled populace and elite, leading to significant internal rebellions. We find that while neither the ecological disasters nor the foreign incursions during the 19th century were sufficient on their own to bring down the Qing, when coupled with the rising internal socio-political stresses, they produced a rapid succession of triggering events that culminated in the Qing collapse.

Abstract:The first decade of 1900s was the decade when great changes had taken place in Chinese traditional education.The abolition of the imperial examination system,the issue and implementation of modern school system and the establishment of a large number of new-style schools had greatly shocked the souls of millions of scholars who studied earnestly day and night under the old educational system and had a lot to do with their future and destinies.As a traditional scholar benefiting from imperial examination system,facing great educational changes in the early 1900s,the cognition and activities of Yun Yuding,on the one hand,were greatly influenced by his growth and traditional culture.He felt distressful,grieved and enraged at the collapse of mainstream value system of the feudal society;on the other hand,the consideration of the interests of his family and himself impelled him to get involved into the changes consciously and unconsciously.All the conflicts and paradoxes shown in his lectures and activities were actually a miniature of the complexities of the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1900s and reflected a cultural predicament confronting the intellectuals in times of critical transformation.

Abstract:Under the Hundred Day's Reform wave in 1898,Zhu Shisan attended an old-style private school,and faced with the flames of the Revolution of 1911,Zhu Shisan dropped out of school.Zhu's educational experience seemed to follow the trend of abolishing imperial examination and initiating schools.As an ordinary scholar,Zhu's personal experience could be taken as the extensive representation of the subtle change within Chinese old-style private schools,the deep reflections on the decline of the imperial examination and the unique feeling of the modern school system with the combination of old and new,western and Chinese elements during that era.The educational transformation in the late 19th and earlier 20th century has influenced the personal interest of each scholar,which has determined their attitudes towards this movement.The period of history for later generations to ponder over is the outcry and heroic action of those pioneers of foresight,the self-rescue measures before the decline of the empire,the change of thousands of literati's state of mind and social customs.As for the latter,our research is far from adequate.

Abstract:Modern China has witnessed a continuing expansion of state obligations and functions paralleled with the shrinking of the civil sphere.This paper outlines the emergence and development of this tendency in the Qing Dynasty,characterized by the process from a small government to a big one,and the dramatic social transformations as the result of the impact of this process.Particularly,the public sphere consisting of all kinds of public societies has been forced to shrink,with its functions more and more weakened.Many functions that used to be responsibilities of the civil society have been taken on by the government.Meanwhile,the people,with their status as subjects to the sovereign changing to citizens of modern society,have had to redefine their relations to the state and the particular social community they are from.Indeed,this process of transformation is still going on today,obviously affected by the above-mentioned tendency.

Abstract:During its last ten years,the Qing court embarked on comprehensive reforms of unprecedented speed and extent,and took no obviously oppressive or "unjust" actions.Nevertheless,a revolution broke out in China and succeeded quickly and with little difficulty.We should have a deeper understanding,analysis and interpretation of the transition from monarchy to republic,the "greatest change in five thousand years." The cross-the-board incursion of imperialism led to an unprecedented upheaval in the Chinese power framework.The new paradigm of competition between China and foreign countries confronted the court and the people with the necessity of fundamental reforms of political orientation,political structure and political ethics.A political pattern of small government which had lasted for thousands of years was forced onto a new road where government action was brought to the fore in pursuit "prosperity and power," and the crisis the system faced made the New Policies seem self-destructive.Furthermore,because political ethics could not change as swiftly as political institutions,the political system's transformation sunk into even deeper crisis.Finally,political transformation had to give way to revolution,which the Chinese people regarded more agile and more effective.
New Learning" Education System:A reason for Elites to Leave from Rural Community in the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China

Abstract:Before modern times the "Old-Learning" had an absolute predomination in the educational field. In 1905 the imperial examination system was abolished, which indicated that the "New-Learning" educational system was established in China ultimately. The elites was provided with social resources for their mobility by the increasing new style of school, the broadening opportunity of the education and the "New-Learning" educational system which lost the internal mechanism of "Old-Learning" educational system for social conformity. At the same time in modern times the "New-Learning" educational system had stood off the rural community in some aspects such as the geographical distribution of the school, the proportion of professional school, the main content of the teaching and so on, which accelerated the speed of the elites' leaving steps from rural community.

Abstract:From the perspective of social thought, the Tongcheng School was consistently involved in ideological developments in late Qing society; the silhouette of the Tongcheng School can be seen in each of the iterations of social thought that successively emerged during the late Qing dynasty. During each period in the late Qing dynasty, the principal members of the Tongcheng School were often representatives of or active participants in the new intellectuals trends of contemporary society, including Yao Ying in relation to the trend of practical statecraft; Zeng Guofan and Li Shuchang in relation to the Self-Strengthening Movement; Guo Songtao and Xue Fucheng in the early stages of the Reform and Modernization efforts; and Wu Rulun in the Hundred Days Reform. On the one hand, it is evident that the Tongcheng School of the late Qing dynasty pandered to the Qing court, while on the other hand it sought to adapt to developments in social thought, and progress with the times. We ought not to wholly reject the Tongcheng School because it ultimately fell behind its times, nor should we regard the Tongcheng School as synonymous with literary conservatism and political reactionarism.

Abstract:The establishment of the Imperial University of Peking was a major event in the Hundred Days' Reformation and was preserved in the conflict between reformers and conservatives. Before the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the University witnessed the ancient empire's attempts to improve its backwardness. Against the backdrop of imperial reform, the newly established university also experienced the impact of old and new forces from the court itself. The country's new talent training system was modernized by constructing schools at all levels. Changes to the imperial examination system led to a change in the traditional path of upward mobility for students who had previously studied to become officials in the study of science and culture. Meanwhile, the University was faced with a composition of students from different educational backgrounds, from those who received a traditional Chinese education to Chinese students who received westernized knowledge, who together experienced the transformation of the education system and the talent system in modern China and had a significant impact on the modernization process in China. The article also discusses the life experiences of some formerly Jinshi titled intellectuals after the Qing government ceased to exist, mainly in the subsequent Republic of China era.
