Abstract:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) with diameters of 1.0-1.5 nm (with similar bandgap to crystalline silicon) are highly desired for nano electronics. Up to date, the highest reported content of s-SWNTs as-grown is similar to 97%, which is still far below the daunting requirements of high-end applications. Herein, we report a feasible and green pathway to use H2O vapor to modulate the structure of the intermetallic W6Co7 nanocrystals. By using the resultant W6Co7 nanocatalysts with a high percentage of (1 0 10) planes as structural templates, we realized the direct growth of s-SWNT with the purity of similar to 99%, in which similar to 97% is (14,4) tubes (diameter 1.29 nm). H2O can also act as an environmentally friendly and facile etchant for eliminating metallic SWNTs, and the content of s-SWNTs was further improved to 99.8% and (14,4) tubes to 98.6%. High purity s-SWNTs with even bandgap determined by their uniform structure can be used for the exquisite applications in different fields.

Abstract:Using the composite graphite rods with the sulphide of iron group metals as anode, the double-wall carbon nanotubes have been fabricated by arc discharging under hydrogen atmosphere. By means of transmission electron microscope, it was found that the double-wall carbon nanotubes were formed in the inner-walls of the evaporation chamber and around the cathode.

Abstract:A new method to prepare large amount of high purity single-walled carbon nanotubes is reported. In this method, a fixed-length metallic graphite anode is arranged at a given angle with the cathode, and then discharged for several minutes in high-temperature helium arc. By using this method, more than one-gram product containing about 60 percent single-walled carbon nanotubes can be obtained, which has been confirmed by the repetitive experiments and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis.

Abstract:An atmospheric‐pressure plasma system is developed and is used to treat carbon nanotube assemblies, producing a hybrid carbon‐zinc structure. This system is integrated into a floating‐catalyst chemical vapor deposition furnace used for the synthesis of macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanotubes to allow for the in‐line, continuous, and single‐step production of nano‐composite materials. Material is deposited from a sacrificial zinc wire in the form of nanoparticles and can coat the surface of the individual carbon nanotubes as they form. Additionally, it is found that the deposited materials penetrate further into the carbon nanotube matrix than a comparable post‐synthesis deposition, improving the uniformity of the material through the thickness. Thus, a single‐step metal‐based coating and carbon nanotube synthesis process which can form the basis of production scale manufacturing of metal‐carbon nanotube composite materials with an atmospheric‐pressure plasma system are demonstrated.
Selenium Nanotubes Synthesized by A Novel Solution Phase Approach

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.

Abstract:Silicon nano-wires (SiNWs) with diameter of ∼30nm and length of tens of micrometers on silicon wafers were synthesized by a novel thermal evaporation of zinc sulfide. After thermal evaporation at 1080°C for 1h, crystalline SiNWs were produced. It was found that the tip of SiNWs contained sulfur, while the other places of SiNWs did not. It is considered that the decomposition of SiS resulted in the formation of SiNWs. On the basis of the facts, a sulfide-assisted growth model of SiNWs was suggested.

Abstract:WOx (2 < x < 3) and WS2 nanostructures have been widely praised due to applications as catalysts, solid lubricants, field emitters, and optical components. Many methods have been developed to fabricate these nanomaterials; however, most attention was focused on the same dimensional transformation from WOx nanoparticles or nanorods to WS2 nanoparticles or nanotubes. In a solid-vapor reaction, by simply controlling the quantity of water vapor and reaction temperature, we have realized the transformation from quasi-zero-dimensional WS2 nanoparticles to one-dimensional W18O49 nanorods, and subsequent sulfuration reactions have further converted these W18O49 nanorods into WS2 nanotubes. The reaction temperature, quantity of water vapor, and pretreatment of the WS2 nanoparticle precursors are important process parameters for long, thin, and homogeneous W18O49 nanorods growth. The morphologies, crystal structures, and circling transformation mechanisms of sulfide-oxide-sulfide are discussed, and the photoluminescence properties of the resulting nanorods are investigated using a Xe lamp under an excitation of 270 nm.

Single-Crystalline γ-Ga2S3 Nanotubes via Epitaxial Conversion of GaAs Nanowires

Abstract:The chemical transformation of nanowire templates into nanotubes is a promising avenue toward hollow one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. To date, high-quality single crystalline tubes of nonlayered inorganic crystals have been obtained by solid-state reactions in diffusion couples of nanowires with deposited thin film shells, but this approach presents issues in achieving single-phase tubes with a desired stoichiometry. Chemical transformations with reactants supplied from the gas- or vapor-phase can avoid these complications, allowing single-phase nanotubes to be obtained through self-termination of the reaction once the sacrificial template has been consumed. Here, we demonstrate the realization of this scenario with the transformation of zincblende GaAs nanowires into single-crystalline cubic γ-Ga2S3 nanotubes by reaction with sulfur vapor. The conversion proceeds via the formation of epitaxial GaAs-Ga2S3 core-shell structures, vacancy injection and aggregation into Kirkendall voids, elastic relaxation of the detached Ga2S3 shell, and finally complete incorporation of Ga in a crystalline chalcogenide tube. Absorption and luminescence spectroscopy on individual nanotubes show optoelectronic properties, notably a ∼3.1 eV bandgap and intense band-edge and near band-edge emission consistent with high-quality single crystals, along with transitions between gap-states due to the inherent cation-vacancy defect structure of Ga2S3. Our work establishes the transformation of nanowires via vapor-phase reactions as a viable approach for forming single-crystalline hollow 1D nanostructures with promising properties.

Abstract:Aligned array of single-walled carbon nanotubes on a substrate is synthesized by chemical vapour deposition of methane. The combined synthesis and FIB technique presented here demonstrated the nanotube devices with metallic electrodes. Sample characterization was carried out with SEM pictures and I-V curves, which show that the nanotube with metallic electrodes may be widely used in both basic research and applications.

Abstract:The novel specific structure of carbon nanotubers (CNTs) and the fascinating heterostructure of carbon nanotubers/metal nanostructure continue to attract attention for potential application and development in science and technology fields. Here, a special structure of CNTs (with small pits or holes on its walls) was fabricated by the combination of adorning the channel of anode alumina oxide (AAO) by electrochemical depositing metal Ag and growing of CNTs by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and their structures details were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation mechanism of this novel structure and its possible potential application are suggested. Furthermore, on the basis of this work, a novel heterostructure of Pt particles and carbon nanotubers was synthesized via similar approach. Regarding the latter, the approach presented here could be further extended to fabricate carbon nanotubes/other metal nanostructures.
Large scale synthesis of uniform CuS nanotubes in ethylene glycol by a sacrificial templating method under mild conditions

Abstract:Uniform CuS nanotubes of 30-90 nm in inner diameter and 20-50 nm in thickness, can be synthesized in large quantities by a facile solution reaction at 80 degrees C in ethylene glycol using Cu nanowires as sacrificial templates and choosing suitable sulfur sources for the sulfuration reaction, where suitable sulfur sources and solvent played crucial roles in the formation of well-defined CuS nanotubes. The results demonstrated that suitable sulfur sources such as thiourea and thiacetamide which release ionic sulfur rather than molecular sulfur at their decomposition temperature are favorable for the formation of CuS nanotubes, in contrast to sulfur powders. Further treatment of the product at higher temperature (140 degrees C) can improve the crystallinity but results in a slight shrinking of the nanotubes toward the inner side. In addition, the similar reaction in water media cannot produce such nanotubes. The shape evolution process and the formation mechanism of CuS nanotubes as well as the thermal stability of these nanotubes were studied.

Abstract:Silicon nanotubes (SNTs) are very attractive in the fields of energy, catalysis, and sensors, but a facile template- and/or catalyst-free preparation method is still absent. Herein, we study a controllable and cost-effective approach for preparing SNTs by electrochemically reducing layer-structured calcium silicate (CaSiO3) in molten CaCl2/NaCl without any template and catalyst. The underlying mechanism of the SNT formation is uncovered: the layer-structured CaSiO3 is first electrochemically exfoliated into SiOx (0 < x < 2) sheets while releasing CaO into the molten salts, and then the SiOx sheets are electrochemically reduced and simultaneously crimped into SNTs. The diameter (120-312 nm) and wall thickness (∼40 nm) of the SNTs can be tailorable by manipulating the reduction potential between -1.28 and -1.48 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Lastly, the electrolytic SNTs show a high lithium storage capacity of 3737 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, a high rate capability of 1371 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1, and stable cycling with a capacity of 974 mAh g-1 after 600 cycles at 1 A g-1. Overall, the template- and catalyst-free electrochemical method provides a straightforward and facile way to prepare SNTs with a brand-new mechanism that can be applied to other tubular structure materials.

Abstract:The filling of carbon nanotubes with zinc oxide via wet chemical techniques is presented. Crystalline zinc oxide was introduced into carbon nanotubes by immersing empty and dried opened tubes in zinc nitrate solution followed by filteration and calcination, which was characterized by means of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After burning off the carbon nanotubes at 750°C in air for 2h, crystalline zinc oxide nanorods, with diameters in the range of ca. 20–40nm and length of up to 1μm, were formed, and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM and HRTEM. XRD indicated that the nanorods were hexagonal ZnO.

Abstract:The formation of tubular nanostructures normally requires layered, anisotropic, or pseudo-layered crystal structures, while inorganic compounds typically do not possess such structures, inorganic nanotubes thus have been a hot topic in the past decade. In this article, we review recent research activities on nanotubes fabrication and focus on three novel synthetic strategies for generating nanotubes from inorganic materials that do not have a layered structure. Specifically, thermal oxidation method based on gas–solid reaction to porous CuO nanotubes has been successfully established, semiconductor ZnS and Nb 2 O 5 nanotubes have been prepared by employing sacrificial template strategy based on liquid–solid reaction, and an in situ template method has been developed for the preparation of ZnO taper tubes through a chemical etching reaction. We have described the nanotube formation processes and illustrated the detailed key factors during their growth. The proposed mechanisms are presented for nanotube fabrication and the important pioneering studies are discussed on the rational design and fabrication of functional materials with tubular structures. It is the intention of this contribution to provide a brief account of these research activities.
Fabrication of multimetal bisulfide nanotube and its structural characteristics

Abstract:The fabrication and structure controlling of inorganic fullerene-like nanocompounds have attracted wide interests in recent years. A new approach of exfoliating-restacking-structure controlling was applied to overcome some technological problems in present preparation approaches. MoS2 and WS2 powders were used as precursor materials and exfoliated into single layers by butyllithium. The sample was treated by MnCl2 solution at 80°C to introduce Mn2+ cations into the reactive system. In this way, the single layer was restacked and the structure of product could be controlled. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM and HRTEM respectively. XRD results indicate that multimetal disulfide compounds can be fabricated by this new approach. TEM results show that the morphology of the multimetal disulfide compounds exhibits hollow-like nanotubes. HRTEM results show that the structure of the hollow-like nanotubes is of double layers. And the substructure of the inner layer exhibits multi-wall shape. Based on the above results, a possible formation mechanism of hollow multi-wall nanotubes was discussed.

Abstract:Semiconductor ZnS nanotubes, with outer diameters in the range of 37–52 nm and lengths up to 3 microns, have been successfully synthesized from solutions containing a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100 (t-octyl-(OCH2CH2) x OH, x = 9,10). The as-synthesized nanotubes have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The growth mechanism of nanotubes has also been discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis of high-quality carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-Cu composite powder by chemical vapor deposition remains a persistent challenge due to catalyst deactivation resulting from its diffusion into Cu powder at elevated temperatures. To overcome this obstacle, a novel approach involving pre-coating Cu powder with an Al2O3 barrier layer was proposed to facilitate the in-situ growth of CNTs. Experimental results demonstrated that synthesized CNTs exhibited a desirable combination of uniform distribution, high aspect ratio and tunable structures achieved by utilizing different carbon source precursors. Notably, single/double-walled CNTs (S/DMCNTs) with exceptional structural integrity was achieved on Cu powder, which has not been reported previously. The Raman ID/IG ratio of present S/DMCNTs-Cu composite powder reached approximately 0.18, which was significantly superior compared to the relevant reported data.

Abstract:Silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires coexisting with amorphous graphite particles were initially produced by using silicon powder, tetrachlorethylene, metallic Na, and sulfur powder as reactants in an autoclave at 130 degrees C. Pure beta-SiC could be finally obtained after heating the sample in concentrated H2SO4 by refluxing at 180 degrees C, which was proved by the X-ray powder diffraction patterns. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show that the product is mainly composed of SiC nanowires (over 75 %) with an average diameter of about of 30 run and lengths up to tens of micrometers. High-resolution TEM shows that the nanowires have preferential growth along the [111] direction. It was found that when sulfur was absent, crystalline beta-SiC powders could not be obtained unless the target temperature was raised higher than 270 degrees C. In the mean time, the ratio of the nanowires also dropped dramatically (approximate to 20 %). The effects of sulfur, reaction time, and temperature on the morphologies of the final products, together with the properties of the final products, were also discussed. Abstract:A novel complex-assisted hydrothermal route is presented to fabricate ultralong Ag/C nanocables with length ranging from 100 to 180 microm on a large scale, based on the reaction of sulfamic acid silver and salicylic acid. By chemical etching of these Ag/C nanocables, high-quality carbonaceous nanotubes can be obtained at room temperature. Using the as-prepared Ag/C nanocables as templates, a new strategy for introducing guest materials into hollow nanotubes is addressed. We take Ag(2)Se as an example and validate the feasibility of this strategy. All of the products are characterized in detail by multiform techniques: X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform IR, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM. The formation mechanisms of these products are tentatively proposed.
