Abstract:Homonology(or human studies) is the starting point and prerequisite for all researches in social sciences.Any breakthrough in solving a great number of major theoretical problems in the discipline of literature and art is subject to the settlement of problems on people.Therefore,it is necessary to establish a new discipline-homonology in literature and art-so as to promote the further development of study on literature and art.Firstly,from a disciplinary point of view,homonology in literature and art is defined by the combination of homonology and literature and art,which is different from either homonology or literature and art.It focuses on the relationships between literature and art and human beings,and between human implications and human interests in the perspective of human studies.Besides,it features unique objects for research: history of thought in literature and art,which is not only of top priority but also theoretical sources and a growth point for its development;and research category and conceptual system,which involve both the macroscopic study of relationships between literary and artistic activities and people,and of people in literary and artistic activities and people's literary and artistic activities,and the microscopic discrimination,in terms of theoretical category,between human nature and literary and artistic nature,human nature in literature and art,literary and artistic individuality,humanity and literature and art,people's life and literature and art,human development and literature and art,human historicity and literature and art,human confirmation and literature and art,etc.In-depth researches in these aspects would bring about the establishment and development of homonology in literature and art.Secondly,homonology in literature and art has its own specific approaches.The object of its research is the relationship between literature and art and human beings,whose complexity in terms of the human nature and human law of thinking determines the adoption of a dialectical materialist approach to analyze and solve problems and of a systematic and integrated approach as well as of top-down and bottom-up approaches.Thirdly,the establishment of the said discipline is both theoretically reasonable and logically inevitable.It meets the challenge of literary and artistic practice in contemporary China and the internal demand of literature and art as a discipline.A deeper understanding of literature and art,conditioned by a deeper understanding of human beings,must go before any possible further promotion of literature and art.It is just on the basis of human beings that homonology in literature and art can be established in its true sense.
Being and Transparency: Study on the Concept of Atheistic Existentialist Homonology in Art and Literature

Abstract:Homonology is the starting point and the premise for all social science researches. The settlement of large numbers of important theoretical problems in the study of art and literature depends on the settlement of human beings’ problems. In the history of Western literary theories, atheistic existentialism, based on the existence of human beings, is applied to inquire into the problems of art and literature. Therefore, the unique homonological thinking in art and literature is thus formed, which has produced a sustained and profound influence on the construction of the concept of contemporary art and literature. In terms of homonological thinking, atheistic existentialism is opposed to traditional essentialism and the human essence before his existence the viewpoint of ontological homonology. It believes that the viewpoint reduces man to a ″such ″ being that his essential existence is logically covered. On the contrary, however, atheistic existentialism proposes that human existence precedes his essence, regarding man in the real meaning as a primitive and indefinable being against describing him in any epistemological or logical paradigms. It also pays full attention to man’s transcending being, and moreover makes human life possible by intellectually removing all transcendent yokes of human existence and by vigorously affirming the possibility of free choice. In brief, this Sartrean formula points to the fundamental freedom of man and his ability to create himself. In terms of art, existentialism lays particular emphasis on the relationship between art and man, holding that art decodes the truth of human existence, and real art is embodied in his life. It constructs an ideological system of homonology in art and literature with existence, truth, transcendence, and freedom as its core.In summary, existential homonology in art and literature has broadened our horizons and changed our past conception in art and literature. Firstly, it attaches importance to the link between art and (human) life, emphasizing the interpretation of artistic activities with life and elevating it to an ontological level, which is an ultimate of artistic being. We are thus provided with a fresh perspective of artistic nature, and the homonological spirit will become the guiding spirit in art and literature, while the ultimate, existence and exploration of human beings will be the sole subject of art and literature. Secondly, the existential homonology is opposed to traditional art and literature that takes art and literature as a form of knowledge, emphasizing their function of cognition, artistic truth, human existence, and individuality (of all men). In this connection, the foundation of artistic value is shifted from knowledge to existence. Thirdly, the existential homonology rewrites the beauty of traditional art and literature that is regarded as their determinant nature, emphasizing the truth as the nature of art. Therefore, according to the existential homonology, art and literature are no longer the symbol of beauty; instead, they are the home of truth.

Abstract:The academic thought in Chinese and Western learning both originates from their classic tradition.Nevertheless,there is a different value orientation between Chinese classics and Western classics.The former is based on Chinese philology and historical documents rather than the value of humanistic thoughts. The latter,though also based on ancient philology,pays more attention to interpreting humanistic thought of ancient Greece and Rome.The contemporary study of Chinese classics should interpret the core value of humanistic traditions in the Pre-Qin times according to ancient Chinese philology.Constructing the spirit of the civilization should be regarded as a main task of our classic hermeneutics.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism reads interprets and analyzes literature from an ethical perspective. It argues that literature is a unique expression of ethic and morality within a certain historical period, and that literature is not just an art of language but rather an art of text. In light of ethical literary criticism, moral enlightenment and education are literature's primary function, while aesthetic appreciation is merely second to it. Specifically, ethical literary criticism seeks to unpack the ethical features of literary works, to describe characters and their lives from the vantage point of ethics, and to make ethical judgments about them. In the history of human civilization, mankind underwent two important processes: natural selection and ethical selection. Natural selection allowed human beings to evolve from apes physically, whereas ethical selection distinguishes them from animals spiritually. In an ethical sense, mankind is the outcome of the Sphinx factor, which can be seen as the combination of the human and animal factors. The Sphinx factor is the central element expressed in literary works.

Abstract:The rapid development of science and technology has advanced the scientific transformation and resulted in scientific turn of humanistic ideas. For the adherence to the scientism, it is necessary to remove the ethical obstacles in the study of humanities and abandon the traditional objective thinking of the abstract ideology of "seeing is believing". Although the integration of humanities and science is the trend of our times, we should look for theories for its theoretical support and guidance. Most current theories are unable to fulfill this mission, so we need to find and construct new theories. Abstract:In the literary theory and aesthetics research after 1949, Zhou Xian has formulated the literary discourse norms but also deconstructed the challenge of literary rules. He is consciously introducing vanguard western theories and meanwhile reflects on the introduction of the theoretical studies to social practices. Abstract:Human form is the premise to define human beings. Amongst the relationships of man, human naturality and human nature, man is the carrier of the other two; and human naturality refers to the corporal property of human beings, which is man's biological feature; and human nature is the spiritual attribute of human beings, which is man's ethical and moral feature. Human naturality is the counterpart of human nature. Mankind is born with human naturality. It is not exclusive to man, but shared by other creatures. However, human nature is man's moral property, which is an ethical term. Human nature is only used to define human beings. Other creatures cannot have it. Moreover, human nature is acquired rather than innate. Human naturality can be inherited, but human nature has to be formed in a certain ethical environment, and perfected via moral teachings. The existing discussions on the issues of whether man is born good or evil show more or. Jess misreading and misunderstanding of the definition of human nature. It is not until we clearly define the concepts of man, instinct, natuality, human naturality and human nature that we are able to completely understand what human nature is.

Ethical lines form the main ethical structure. Compared to the written text in literature, the text of oral literature, which can be termed as brain text, is stored in the human brain. The material and fundamental existence of literature is based on written context. The evolving definition of literature is dependent upon the culture and context from which it originated.

Abstract:This group of six papers makes respectively different approaches to literary ethical criticism. Professor Nie Zhenhao makes a pioneering and comprehensive exposition of the notion of literary ethical criticism, including its sources, methods, contents, foundations, the applicable areas, practical values and realistic significance. Professor Knut takes Ibsen′s plays for example to discuss not only the moralities in Ibsen′s plays, but also the necessity and importance of literary ethical criticism. Professor Wang Ning talks about Ecocriticism together with literary ethical criticism, providing a good example for combining literary ethical criticism with some other methods of literary criticism. Based on the three phases of human self-recognition and in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, Professor Liu Jianjun makes a further interpretation of the ethical method in literary criticism. Professor Qiao Guoqiang speculates inquisitively the definition and ideological foundations of the ethical criticism. He also makes a conceptual debate over the authors, their literary works and their readers in terms of the critical method. Believing that it is three-dimensional and apocalyptical, Professor Zou Jianjun discusses the historical and realistic significances of the ethical method in literary criticism. In brief, all the above-mentioned papers attempt to state that in an era of moral invisibility in literary criticism, the critics should be responsible for moral re-establishment through literary criticism and therefore, to recover or retrieve the moral values in literature. They believe that literary ethical criticism is one of the most important approaches to achieving this end.

Abstract:In terms of methodology, ethical literary criticism is an approach to literary criticism developed on the basis of the introduction of ethical methods and the assimilation of them into the texture of literary critical methods. It is used not only to interpret the moral phenomena recorded in literature on a historical and dialectic basis, but also to make value Judgment of those in the present literature based on the moral values in the reality. In nature European literature since Homer's epics is ethical and thus the earliest Greek literary criticism took the standpoint of moral criticism, of which the judgment of good and evil serves as the essential criterion. Plato tended to criticize literary works based on the moral values in the reality and to judge the quality of literary works according to the moral codes of his times, and thus he took an approach of moral criticism. Aristotle, however, took a different view of literary criticism that is closer to what we advanced as "ethical literary criticism" and Poetics is the great practice of literary criticism. But the ethical literary criticism is somewhat different from that of Greek literary theorists as it could take a new approach to Homer's epics and Greek tragedies. Generally speaking, ethical literary criticism is similar to moral criticism in the object of study, but is quite different from the latter in terms of research methods, objectives and the goals they may achieve respectively. This paper is to illustrate such differences through an analysis of Shakespeare's Hamlet, in which the cause of Hamlet's tragedy does not owe to his character and complex, but to his ethical dilemma, from the perspective of ethical literary criticism. On the other hand, ethical literary criticism, with basically a historical point of view, is still open to some contemporary theories and methods such as bio-criticism so as to form a comparative viewpoint in the study of literature.

Abstract:It is argued by some scholars that the basic function of literature is to provide aesthetic pleasure, and accordingly, the core value of literature is its aesthetic value. For those who hold this view, the emphasis on the ethical value of literature is to misread the nature of literary texts and to bind literature in fetters of ethics and morality which, therefore, should be removed. In response to this argument, it is of high necessity to discuss in depth the issues related to the function and value of literature. While the function of literature refers to the function inherent in literary texts it is possessed within any literary texts, aesthetic pleasure or enjoyment is the emotional element in our response to literary works (and works of art and natural beauty). The fulfillment of aesthetic pleasure requires the existence of aesthetic object and of aesthetic subject which is an external element in the mechanism of literature's function. It is the relationship of possession between literature and its function and the mechanism of literature function that define the invalidity of the view that aesthetic pleasure is the function of literature. As such, the view that the core value of literature is its aesthetic value cannot be established as it is based on the wrong promise.

Abstract:After the first biological selection of humankind, it is regarded as the second important choice, the ethical one, that Adam and Eve picked and ate the forbidden fruit in Eden and Oedipus solved the riddle of the Sphinx. It is the ethical choice to distinguish humankind from animals and made savagery people to be ethical beings. In ethical sense, Man is Sphinx(an existence of Sphinx factor), a combination of rational factor and animal factor. Sphinx factor is the core content of ethical statement in literary works. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Gray makes an ethical choice which is to exchange the identity with his picture that results in his tragedy in the end. halo Calvino in The Cloven Viscount describes the conflict of rational will and irrational will in the divided viscount, as represented in the kind viscount and the evil one. In classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Monkey King (Sun Wukong) is the embodiment of natural will Hsuan Tsang (Tang-monk; Tangseng) his master imposes restraints upon him by means of a hat and a spell to it, and ultimately helps him convert from a monkey to a human being (a Buddhist). These highly metaphorical literary texts not only provide us examples of different combinations of Sphinx factor and its variations, reveal clearly the value of this ethical choice in the history of social and individuals, but also manifest the ethical conflicts among rational will, natural will and irrational will. In reflecting on these ethical issues we feel greatly enlightened.

Abstract:This article puts forward several ideas on the development of literary theory in contemporary China. Firstly, the philosophical basis of literary theory should be shifted from a simplistic epistemology to Marxist ontology with praxis as its theoretical core. Secondly, the mode of thinking in literary theory should be altered from a substantial one to a generative one. Thirdly, literary theory should go beyond the methodological framework of subject-object dichotomy, and adopt a renewed way of dialectical thinking. Last but not the least, it is necessary for us to rediscover the vitality and realistic meaning of the proposition of "literature is the study of humanity" from the perspective of Marxist humanism.
