Abstract:In this paper, tensile impact tests were performed on a tungsten heavy alloy at strain rates ranging from 100 to 1300 s−1. Strain softening behavior was observed at the strain rates considered. Relationships between tensile strength, failure strain and strain rate were determined using power-law functions. The fracture surfaces exhibited four characteristic features: tungsten–tungsten boundary separation, tungsten–matrix interface separation, tungsten cleavage and matrix rupture. A three-parameter nonlinear constitutive model was established to describe the strain rate dependent behavior of the tungsten heavy alloy. The parameters in this model are the modulus E, the strain exponent m and the compliance factor β. All three parameters were found to be strain rate dependent.
