Abstract:Iron-containing zeolites play an important role in the selective oxidation of methane to oxygenates by nitrous oxide. A solid-state ion exchange method is adopted to prepare Fe-MOR zeolite catalysts with different amounts of extra-framework Al. EPR spectra and UV–vis spectra show that the percentage of iron ions in tetrahedral or octahedral coordination increases while those of clustered Fe species decrease by the addition of extra-framework Al species. Nitrous oxide titration reveals that more active Fe centers are formed, which promote the nitrous oxide consumption. The number of active centers in the catalyst with the introduction of extra-framework Al is about four times that of the catalyst without the addition of extra-framework Al. Due to this, there is an increase in the methane conversion, total selectivity and yield of oxygenates.

Abstract:Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites with uniform crystal size and shape were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and these parent zeolites were desilicated by an alkaline-treatment method to obtain mesoporous Fe-ZSM-5 (meso-Fe-ZSM-5) zeolites. Both Fe-ZSM-5 and meso-Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites were characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption, ICP-AES, SEM, TEM, UV-vis, and TGA techniques and as catalysts they were used in the direct oxidation of benzene to phenol (BTOP) by N2O as oxidant. The meso-Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts show a much higher catalytic activity and stability, compared to the parent Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts. A comparison study on the uptakes of benzene in the parent and alkali-treated zeolites indicates that the internal mass-transfer limitations of the meso-Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites are significantly improved due to the introduction of intracrystalline mesoporosity, resulting in a better catalytic activity and stability in the BTOP reaction. Desilication in the alkaline medium of Fe-ZSM-5 crystals enables a more efficient utilization of the zeolite in the BTOP reaction that is strongly affected by diffusional limitations.

Abstract:Developing effective iron-incorporated zeolites and determining their active centers for the direct oxidation of CH4 to oxygenates have remained challenging topics so far. In this paper, we successfully prepare the highly-dispersed iron supported Y zeolites by a facile solid-state ion-exchange method with ferrocene, which was conducted under water-free conditions followed by a series of calcination. Moreover, extra-framework dinuclear Fe2+ complexes are identified as so-called active α-iron sites on zeolites. ICP-OES, N2 adsorption–desorption test, X-ray diffraction, solid-state 27Al NMR, N2O titration, TEM, EPR and 57Fe Mössbauer spectra were carried out to characterize properties of sample structure, acid sites, as well as the supported iron species. Characterization results indicate that high-temperature treatments have no effect on the typical structure feature of zeolites. Compared with catalysts synthesized by conventional impregnation, the samples prepared by the facile approach possess abundant dinuclear Fe2+ complexes but no Fe2O3 bulks and show weak acidity. These lead to a higher oxygenate selectivity in CH4 oxidation to oxygenates. Remarkably, the oxygenate (HCHO and CH3OH) selectivity of 6.5% at 375°C can be eventually obtained.

Abstract:Direct oxidation of methane into value‐added C1 oxygenated products, such as methanol, is essential and remains a significant challenge in the field of catalysis. In this work, we have prepared Fe/ZSM‐5 materials via three different methods and investigated the influence of various preparation methods on the composition and catalytic performance of Fe/ZSM‐5 for the low‐temperature oxidation of methane. Through a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet‐visible diffuse reflectance and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, we have found that the highest proportion of monomeric Fe species of 71% could be achieved in the ZSM‐5 zeolite by the solid‐state ion‐exchange method, affording an excellent C1 oxygenates yield of 120 mol/molFe with a C1 oxygenates selectivity of 96% at 50 °C for 30 min in the aqueous solution of H2O2.

Abstract:To increase the yield of light olefins during the catalytic pyrolysis of alkanes, a novel hierarchical Fe-incorporated ZSM-5 molecular sieve (FeM-Z5) was synthesized using an Fe-based metal-organic framework (Fe-MOF) as a mesoporogen and iron source through the dry gel conversion (DGC) method. In contrast to the conventional method of incorporating Fe species into ZSM-5 via impregnation, the DGC method incorporates Fe species into the framework of ZSM-5, decreasing the amount of Brønsted (B) acid sites and thereby inhibiting the side reactions of hydrogen transfer during the catalytic pyrolysis of alkanes. Compared with the FeN-Z5 catalyst prepared by the DGC method with Fe(NO 3 ) 3 as an iron source, FeM-Z5 had a larger amount of strong B acid sites and more mesopores with a size range of 10-40 nm originating from the decomposition of Fe-MOF; these aspects improved n-pentane pyrolysis and ethylene and propylene diffusion. As a result, the optimal FeM-Z5 catalyst exhibited the highest yield of ethylene and propylene (33.4 wt%) and the lowest deactivation rate (0.07%/h) among the prepared catalysts during the catalytic pyrolysis of n-pentane.

Abstract:Nanosized and microsized ZSM-5 samples were prepared using a two-stage crystallization method in the presence of glucose and additional post-treated by acid leaching, tetrapropylammonium hydroxide, or ammonium fluorosilicate. The characterization results show that for synthesizing ZSM-5 zeolites, glucose inhibits the position of Al atoms in the channel intersections, thus forming additional single Al atoms and making more Al pairs at the straight and sinusoidal channels rather than channel intersections. The catalytic performance in the methanol conversion reaction shows that nanosized ZSM-5 catalysts are enriched in Al pairs in the channel intersections and exhibit higher ethylene and aromatics selectivity via the aromatic-based cycle, whereas microsized ZSM-5 catalysts have multiple single Al sites and low Al pairs in the channel intersections and exhibit higher propylene selectivity but lower aromatics selectivity via olefinic-based cycle. It provides a facile method to prepare the ZSM-5 zeolite with improved catalytic performance in the MTP reaction.

Abstract:Benzene alkylation with CO2/H2 is a doubly beneficial option to upgrade benzene toward valuable products, in which benzene can be converted into valuable toluene and xylene, while CO2 can be utilized as an alkylation reagent to mitigate the greenhouse effect. It is quite challenging to ascertain the critical rule of zeolite regulation for the synergistic effect in oxide-zeolite composite (OXZEO) catalysts, a series of bifunctional catalysts were investigated in this work, consisting of ZnZrO x solid solution and nano-sized HZSM-5 with uniform size distribution and distinct acid properties. Key parameters affecting the catalyst performance were analyzed and optimized in this tandem reaction, namely, the mass ratio of two components, the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of HZSM-5, and the proximity between ZnZrO x and HZSM-5. Due to the increased active site accessibility originating from nano-sized HZSM-5, the combined selectivity of toluene and xylene reaches 94.6% at 31.3% benzene conversion, respectively. Moreover, low ethylbenzene selectivity (<1%) has been achieved. It is worth noting that the long-term stability test indicates a faster deactivation in the nano-sized HZSM-5 system as compared with the micro-sized counterpart. Based on EDS mappings, it is found that nano-sized HZSM-5 experiences a more severe metal migration issue, resulting in lower catalyst stability. The reaction mechanism with formate-methoxy intermediates and the synergistic effect of CO2 hydrogenation-alkylation were further confirmed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformations spectroscopy and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. By correlating zeolite size and acidity with catalytic performances, these findings could facilitate the further rational design of OXZEO catalysts toward CO2 catalytic conversions.

Abstract:A Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst has been extensively studied in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, where the methanol selectivity usually decreases with increasing CO2 conversion because of the thermodynamically oriented CO production. Herein, we found that the CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity over the Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst could be simultaneously improved through zirconia modulation (CZAZ). The structural characterizations show that the zirconia efficiently increases both the surface area and Cu dispersion on the catalyst. In the CO2-to-methanol transformation, it is found that the zirconia could significantly hinder the decomposition of the CH3O* intermediate to benefit its hydrogenation to methanol, a crucial step in this transformation. These features simultaneously optimized the CO2 conversion and methanol selectivity, giving methanol space-time productivity at 1376 g(MeOH)/(kg(cat)center dot h). In addition, the CZAZ catalyst was durable in a continuous test for 200 h over a wide temperature range of 200-250 degrees C, which is important for its potential application.
Aluminum Fluoride Modified HZSM-5 Zeolite with Superior Performance in Synthesis of Dimethyl Ether from Methanol

Abstract:A series of HZSM-5 catalysts modified with various loadings of aluminum fluoride (AlF3) were prepared from a mechanical mixture route. Combined characterizations of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Al-27, Si-29, F-19 MAS NMR, N-2 sorption, and NH3-tempeature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) techniques show that the structure, texture, and acidity of HZSM-5 catalysts can be adjusted with the loading of AlF3. A suitable amount of AlF3 modification (2 wt %) could increase the framework aluminum content and the surface area of HZSM-5. However, when the loading of AlF3 came to 3 wt % or more, the contrary results were obtained, which could be ascribed to the dealumination of the zeolitic framework. The catalytic activities for dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether(DME) show that suitable amount of AlF3-modified HZSM-5 exhibited much higher activity and better stability than parent HZSM-5. The combination of "tunable" synthesis and "superior" properties is very much valuable in the academic and industry.

Abstract:Density functional theory was employed to obtain the configurations of oxo-bridged [Fe,M] exchanged ZSM-5 zeolite clusters, possible active sites for direct benzene hydroxylation. For oxo-bridged [Fe,Fe] species, the Fe–Fe and Fe–O distances in Configurations a, b, c, d, e1 and f were more consistent with experimental (ca. 2.53 or 3.06Å) than in the cluster models designed by Yakovlev et al. with two framework Al atoms nearby. For oxo-bridged [Fe,Al] species, the geometric parameters of Configurations g, i and j agreed well with experimental. Configuration i was found to be of higher stability by 64.2kJmol−1 compared to its isomer Configuration k1. +II and +III constituted the dominant valence states for Fe in Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite, and the state of mixed +II and +III valences did exist in ZSM-5 zeolite as in Configuration b1, b2 or c. Fe of +I state was absolutely non-existent in ZSM-5 zeolite even if predefined so. The calculated reaction heats of “α-oxygen” formation clearly showed that the oxidation processes were always facilitated by N2O than O2. The reaction heats of ZSM-5 zeolites exchanged with mono-Fe and binuclear Fe species (n→o, a1,2→b1,2 and e1→f) were −114.9, −65.3, −67.4 and −48.8kJmol−1, respectively, in excellent agreement with the results obtained by Ryder, Yakovlev et al. Moreover, “α-oxygen” generation was favored by introduction of extra-framework Al (i→j: −73.9kJmol−1) compared to the binuclear Fe species. All factors considered, the best candidates for “α-oxygen” generation were Configuration a1,2 for oxo-bridged [Fe,Fe] species and Configuration i for oxo-bridged [Fe,Al] species, respectively.

Abstract:A series of Fe/Ga-ZSM-5 catalysts with different Ga contents were prepared by solid-state ion exchange method. Ultraviolet and visible Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, H2-temperature-programmed reduction, and N2O decomposition at 523 K were used to investigate the effect of extra-framework Ga on the nature of the Fe species in Fe/Ga-ZSM-5 catalysts. Introducing extra-framework Ga and high-temperature treatment can significantly affect the distribution even the nature of the Fe species in Fe/Ga-ZSM-5. For the high-temperature treated catalysts, the presence of extra-framework Ga remarkably increases the amount of the Fe(II) sites and the activity of direct N2O decomposition, suggesting that extra-framework Ga can promote the formation of the active sites for N2O decomposition. The possible interpretation of the beneficial role of extra-framework Ga is that extra-framework Ga facilitates the reduction of bi- and oligo-nuclear Fe(III) sites to form the Fe(II) sites and interacts with the Fe sites with low nuclearity to form a mixed Fe–Ga–O phase for the high-temperature treated catalysts.
Creation of Al‐Enriched Mesoporous ZSM‐5 Nanoboxes with High Catalytic Activity: Converting Tetrahedral Extra‐Framework Al into Framework Sites by Post Treatment

Abstract:ZSM‐5 zeolite nanoboxes with accessible meso‐micro‐pore architecture and strong acid sites are important to heterogeneous catalysis suffering from mass transfer limitations and weak acidities. Rational design of parent zeolites with concentrated and non‐protective coordination of Al species can facilitate the post‐synthetic treatments to produce mesoporous ZSM‐5 nanoboxes. In this work, a simple and effective method was developed to prepare and convert parent MFI zeolites with tetrahedral extra‐framework aluminium (EFAL) into Al‐enriched mesoporous ZSM‐5 nanoboxes with low silicon‐to‐aluminium ratios (SARs) of ~16. The parent MFI zeolite was prepared by a strategy of rapid ageing of the zeolite sol gel synthesis mixture. The accessibility to the well‐developed meso‐micro‐porous intra‐crystalline network was probed systematically by comparative pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG‐NMR) diffusion measurements, which, in synergy with the high concentration of strong acidity of nanoboxes, provided superb catalytic activity and catalyst longevity in hydrocarbon cracking for producing propylene.

Characterization of ZrO2-Supported Fe Catalyst by M(o)ssbauer Spectroscopy and XAFS

Abstract:ZrO2-supported Fe catalyst, prepared by incipient wetness impregnation followed by reduction in H2 without calcination in air, is found to be active for synthesis of light hydrocarbons from CO2 and H2. The catalytic performance of the catalyst is also affected by prereduction temperature. The best result shows X(CO2)=27% with S(C2+ 0 +C2+ =) = 56.7%. XRD, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray absorption Fe K-edge structure analyses (XANES and EXAFS) are employed to study the surface structure of the catalyst. Both Fe0 and Fe+ are present on the surface, but no Fe2+ is observed and no phase formed between iron oxides and ZrO2 is found. These results indicate that the Fe2+ species is unstable on ZrO2 surface. Under an optimum reduction at 723 K, the synergic effect of both α-Fe and Fe3+ species is thought to be responsible for high activity of Fe/ZrO2.
Selective Alkylation of Benzene with Methanol to Toluene and Xylene over H-ZSM-5 Zeolites: Impact of Framework Al Spatial Distribution

Abstract:The alkylation of benzene with methanol can effectively generate high-value-added toluene and xylene out of surplus benzene, which is now achieved primarily using solid acids like H-ZSM-5 zeolites as catalysts. In this work, two H-ZSM-5 samples with distinct framework aluminum (AlF) distributions, but otherwise quite similar textural and acidic properties, have been prepared by employing tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and n-butylamine (NBA) as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs). Systematical investigations demonstrate that AlF is preferentially located at the intersections in MFI topology when TPAOH is adopted. In contrast, less AlF is positioned therein as NBA is utilized. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the transition-state complexes cannot be formed in the straight and sinusoidal channels due to their much smaller sizes than the dynamic diameters of transition states, whereas there are adequate spaces for the formation of transition states at the intersections. Benefitting from abundant AlF at the intersections, which provides more acid sites therein, H-ZSM-5 synthesized from TPAOH is more active relative to the counterpart obtained from NBA. At a WHSV of 4 h−1 and 400 °C, the former catalyst gives a 52.8% conversion, while the latter one affords a 45.9% conversion. Both catalysts display close total selectivity towards toluene and xylene (ca. 84%). This study provides an efficient way to regulate the distribution of acid sites, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance of H-ZSM-5 zeolite in the titled reaction.
A Cu/Zn/Al/Zr Fibrous Catalyst that is an Improved CO 2 Hydrogenation to Methanol Catalyst

Abstract:A series of Cu/Zn/Al/Zr CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol catalysts containing different ratios of Al/Zr were prepared using a co-precipitation procedure. SEM, TEM, and XRD characterization showed that all the catalysts comprised crystallites in a fibrous structure and their Cu/Zn crystallite dispersions were better than that of a commercial (COM) catalyst. It is suggested that the high dispersion and stability of the Cu/Zn crystallites due to the fibrous structure enhanced CO 2 hydrogenation, and the added Zr component further improved the catalyst. A 5% Zr addition gave a methanol space time yield 80% higher than that on the COM catalyst.
Highly efficient conversion of methane to formic acid under mild conditions at ZSM-5-confined Fe-sites

Abstract:<p>Production of value-added chemicals from oriented methane conversion under mild conditions is of great significance for utilization of the energy resources, which, however, remains a great challenge due to its difficulty in the selective activation of C–H bond. Herein, we report a highly selective and efficient methane conversion to formic acid on atomically dispersed Fe sites confined in the nano-channels of ZSM-5. The turnover frequency for producing C1 liquid oxygenates reaches 84,200 h<sup>−1</sup> with a high selectivity of 91% to formic acid at 80 °C, which outperforms all previously reported catalysts. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the ZSM-5-confined Fe-O active centers can facilely dissociate the C–H bonds and catalyze successive oxidation of methane to formic acid via free radical mechanisms under mild conditions. Abstract:Abstract Spontaneous monodispersion of reducible active species (e.g., Fe, Co) and their stabilization in reductive atmospheres remain a key challenge in catalytic syngas chemistry. In this study, we present a series of catalysts including spontaneously monodispersed and enriched Fe on ZnCr 2 O 4 . Deep investigation shows remarkable performance in the syngas-to-aromatic reaction only when monodispersed Fe coupled with a H-ZSM-5 zeolite. Monodispersed Fe increases the turnover frequency from 0.14 to 0.48 s −1 without sacrificing the record high selectivity of total aromatics (80–90%) at a single pass. The increased activity is ascribed to more efficient activation of CO and H 2 at oxygen vacancy nearest to the isolated Fe site and the prevention of carbide formation. Atomic precise characterization and theoretical calculations shed light on the origin and implications of spontaneous Fe monodispersion, which provide guidance to the design of next-generation catalyst for upgrading small molecules to synthetic fuels and chemicals.
