Abstract:3, 3-Dimethoxypropanenitrile was synthesized from 2-chloro-3-phenylsulfonylpropanenitrile by elimination and addition reactions. 3-phenylsulfonylpropanenitrile was obtained by eliminating HCl from 2-chloro-3-phenylsulfonylpropanenitrile at 0-20℃ with a yield of 88%. 3-Phenylsulfonylpropanenitrile was reacted with sodium methoxide in methanol, giving 3, 3-dimethoxypropanenitrile with a yield of 98%. Elimination reaction was innovated by using THF as a solvent instead of ethyl ether and addition reaction was innovated by using an excess of sodium methoxide in methanol, so as to have the reaction condition optimized.

Abstract:A convenient, two-step synthesis of the 5,8-dimethyl-dibenzo[b,j][1,10]phenanthrolines is presented. The first step is a Buchwald-Hartwig amination of 1,2-dibromobenzene and 2’-Aminoacetophenone to produce 1,1’-((1,2-phenylenebis(azanediyl))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(ethan-1- one), which is converted to the final product via a ring-closing reaction. The overall reaction yield is 63%. The complexation of 5,8-dimethyldibenzo[b,j][1,10]phenanthrolines with 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid (dcbpy) and Ru Ru(DMSO)4Cl2 is also reported and the Ru complex might be used to prepare a nanoscale thin film for dye-sensitives solar cell and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:A procedure for synthesis of 2-methoxyphenothiazine (1) has been developed, starting from resorcinol and aniline by condensation, following methylation and cyclization. p-Toluenesulfonic acid and polysubstituted aromatics were employed as the catalyst of condensation and the solvent of cyclization, respectively, to improve the yield. The use of parallel experiments, statistical experimental design, and multivariate modeling made the total yield of the procedure as high as 74.2%. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2012).

Abstract:Abstract A Copper‐catalyzed benzylation of methylenecyclopropanes with potassium benzyltrifluoroborate salts has been developed to produce 2‐benzyl‐3,4‐dihydronaphthalenes in moderate to good yields. This oxidative cyclization reaction proceeds well via a sequence of radical addition, ring‐opening, and cyclization. This protocol represents a new example of methylenecyclopropane oxidative cyclization and tolerates a diverse range of substrate.

Abstract:3H-Naphtho[2.1-b]pyran-2-carboxamides (3H-Benzo[f]chromene-2-carboxamides) can be synthesized from a three-component cyclocoupling reaction of β-naphthol, propargyl alcohols and isocyanide in the presence of ZnI2 and FeCl3 under air atmosphere. The reaction is proposed to involve the formation of aryl-zinc (II) σ-bond and its α-addition to isocyanide.

Abstract:The reactions of α-bromoacetophenones with methylhydrazine in refluxing acetic acid generated 2-methyl-4-aryl-2H-[1,2,3]triazoles in good yields. The method was developed by the reactions of α-bromoacetophenones with phenylhydrazines in the presence of cupric ion, leading to 2,4-diary-2H-[1,2,3]triazoles. The structures were established on the basis of corresponding IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis data.

Abstract:The FeCl3-promoted annulation reaction of aryl acetaldehydes with alkynes has been established, which provides a new and versatile straightforward procedure for the regioselective synthesis of mono-, di-, and polysubstituted naphthalenes under mild conditions. Interestingly, the present catalytic system not only differentiates between internal and terminal alkynes but also shows unprecedented complete Me3SiOH elimination selectivity for silyl alkyne substrates. Furthermore, the synthesis of a series of substituted phenanthrenes via reactions of nathphyl acetaldehydes with internal alkynes is also achieved for the first time in good yields with excellent regioselectivity.

Abstract:Herein, we report a silver-catalyzed halogenation and electrophilic cyclization reaction based on the trifunctionalization of terminal alkynols with NBS or iodine monochloride in a step-efficient synthetic way to produce homo/heterodihalogenated naphthalene derivatives bearing two different halogen atoms in moderate to good yields. This methodology readily accommodates various functional groups, including electron-withdrawing nitro, cyano, acid-sensitive dioxazolyl, and alkoxy groups.

Abstract:Synthesis of 6-(sulfonylmethyl)phenanthridines through a three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, a sulfur dioxide surrogate of DABCO·(SO2)2, and vinyl azides under metal- and additive-free conditions is achieved. The arylsulfonyl radicals generated in situ would initiate the sulfonylation of vinyl azides. Subsequent intramolecular cyclization and deprotonation would provide 6-(sulfonylmethyl)phenanthridines in good yields. High efficiency under extremely mild conditions with the insertion of sulfur dioxide through a radical process is observed.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed ortho-cyanation of symmetrical azobenzenes is described employing N-cyano-N-phenyl-p-toluenesulfonamide as an environmentally friendly cyanide source. The present protocol allows the synthesis of various benzonitrile derivatives in moderate to good yields and tolerates many useful functional groups.

Abstract:Herein, we reported the straightforward synthesis of thiomethylnaphthalenes via the reaction of propargyl alcohols with DMSO/SOCl2, which also provided easy access to deuterated thiomethyl and other thioalkyl scaffolds when deuterated dimethyl sulfoxide and dialkyl sulfoxides were used, respectively. In addition, the thiomethyl group can be readily derivatized to the corresponding sulfoxide, sulfone, and sulfoximine of interesting photophysical properties.

Abstract:A simple and effective method for the synthesis of 9‐sulfenylphenanthrenes was developed via BF3•OEt2‐mediated annulation of 2‐alkynyl biaryls with N‐arylthio succinimides at room temperature. Through this methodology, a series of 9‐sulfenylphenanthrenes could be efficiently and conveniently obtained in good to excellent yields under mild and metal‐free conditions.

Abstract:2-Bromo-3-methyl-1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene,an im-portant intermediate of menaquinone,was synthesized through three-step process employing 2-methyl-1,4-naphtho-quinone as the starting material.The first catalytical hydrogenation with pal-ladium/activated carbon as the catalyst gave a 98.8% yield.Forthe second step,2-methyl-1,4-naphthohydroquinone reacted with dimethyl sulfate in aqueous alkali,95.1% yield was realized.The target product was obtained through the reaction between 2-methyl-1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene and bromine with 90.1% yield.The overall yield reached 84.6%.

Abstract:A Na2CO3-promoted addition of phenols to propiolonitriles generated (Z)-3-aryloxy-acrylonitriles in nearly quantitative yields with exclusively Z-isomers, and a DABCO-promoted addition reaction of phenols with propiolonitriles afforded mainly (E)-3-aryloxy-acrylonitriles with high yields. The obtained (E)-3-aryloxy-acrylonitriles underwent intramolecular cyclization to give 3-cyanobenzofurans in good yields through palladium-catalyzed direct C-H bond functionalization.

Abstract:1,4-Bis(tert-butylthio)-3,6-diphenyl- and 3,6-di(2-thienyl)thieno[3,4-c]thiophenes (2a,b)were synthesized from 2-(tert-butylthio)-3-phenyl- and 3-(2-thienyl)cyclopropenethiones (1a,b) and triphenylphosphine in dry benzene at 50 degrees C, although similar treatment of 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl, N,N-diethylamino, pyrrolidino, and diphenyl-substituted cyclopropenethiones (1c-h) did not result in the production of the corresponding thieno[3,4-c]thiophene derivatives. The possible reaction pathway for the formation of 2a,b is described. The protonation of 2a with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) gave 4-(tert-butylthio)-3,6-diphenylthieno[3,4-c]thiophene-1(3H)-thione (13a), the treatment of which with sodium hydride and then isopropyl iodide led to 4-(tert-butylthio)-3,6-diphenyl-1-(isopropylthio)thieno[3,4-c]thiophene (16) by the regeneration of the thieno[3,4-c]thiophene ring system, this making possible the synthesis of other alkylthio-substituted thieno[3,4-c]thiophene derivatives. The reactions of 2a,b with N-phenylmaleimide (NPM) gave predominantly the endo-cycloadducts (17a,b) at the 1- and 3-positions, and that of 2a with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) led to the benzo[c]thiophene derivative (19) by desulfurization.
