Abstract:Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, 2008 winner of Nobel Prize for Literature, is undoubtedly one of the key figures in the arena of French literature. Of all his publications, Le Proces Verbal, Desert, Ourania, Ritournelle de la faim are the most representative ones. Seen from the themes, his fiction attaches great significance to the interrelations of human beings and human traditions, of human beings and human society, and, in particular, of human beings and Nature. Le Clezio accordingly argues that human beings, once stepping into the real nature, will find their knowledge about society as well as human existence a kind of deviation. It is, according to him, necessary to combine comprehensive knowledge with different means for the understanding of the real world. With respect to the sources where his fictions spring into being, Le Clezio believes that his novels are a mirror of two different worlds. One is the French world and the other is the peripheral world which is different from the mainstream human civilization. His works, therefore, show a profound humanistic concern for marginal civilizations. As regards to the forms of his fictional writing, Le Clezio mildly criticizes the extreme formalism prevailing in the 1960s and 1970s French literature. He, however, holds that the micro ways of narration in Western historical studies and Joycean modernist, methods of representation can be applied to the presentation of the real history and the hidden world of human beings.

Abstract:On the occasion of the award of the author's da Vinci Medal in 2022, this article sketches a perspective, material political economy, employed by the author, explaining it by drawing on Marc Bloch's classic account of the dispute in European feudalism between milling grain on watermills or windmills controlled by feudal superiors, who could exact fees, and common people's use of hand mills. It considers the material political economy aspects of two modern technologies. The first is automated high-frequency trading in finance, where there are typically conflicts with incumbents and material efforts to favor "market-making" over "aggressive" algorithms. The second is the automated auctioning of digital display advertising opportunities, showing tension between two forms of these auctions' material organization: centralized auctioning via Google's systems and decentralized "header bidding."

Abstract:British female novelist Doris Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007, which has given us lots of illuminations. First of all, her writing is full of idealist tendency, and then, she was involved in the feminist movement and is especially good at describing the subject matters about coloniality. Plus her Diaspora identity, Lessing has always been observed and even critically studied by both writers as well as literary scholars and critics. To the the present author, Lessing's prize winning has proved the authority and justice of literary Nobel Prize. But to Chinese literature, Nobel Prize should not be regarded as the only criterion to judge its literary quality. That Chinese writers have failed to be awarded this prize has several reasons. At the beginning of the new century, literature is challenged by consumer culture, which has caused literary creation to be in-crisis. Although Chinese literature of the new century can no longer create any sensational effect, as a unique means of aesthetic expression, literature will never die. The day is to come when some of the excellent Chinese writers of great potential will be awarded the Nobel. Prize for Literature.
