Abstract:The axial thrusts acting on the impeller of centrifugal compressor are examined. The compute model give the leakage gas flow field in the gap outside of the impeller. Results are obtained by using low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model together with the SIMPLEC algorithm. Satisfactory results are found for the axial thrust of centrifugal compressor.

Abstract:Axial-centrifugal combined compressors are widely used in small and medium aero-engines. This study aims to investigate the performance and flow characteristics of a multistage axial-centrifugal compressor using annulus unsteady simulation. The compressor comprises three axial stages and one radial stage, including the inlet and outlet guide vanes. The simulation employs an in-house URANS solver with a total of 357 million cells. The study analyzes two operating points, at the highest mass flow rate (choke) and near peak efficiency, respectively. The results show satisfactory agreement with the experimental data for the performance parameters of the compressor, such as pressure ratio, isentropic efficiency, and static pressure distribution. The simulation reveals the flow chokes in the radial diffuser, which is characterized by the presence of sonic surfaces occupying the throats of flow passages. Furthermore, two distinct vortices are observed in the radial diffuser, with one vortex axis being oriented vertically to the suction surface and the other being along hub-to-shroud direction. In contrast, the flow approximately maintains a smooth trajectory from the inlet until it exits the impeller. Moreover, even in scenarios where the compressor operates at choked conditions, the tip vortices of the first rotor manifest a distinctive trait of rotating instability, substantiated by the noticeable presence of a “hump” within the frequency spectrum of pressure. The study can contribute to a better understanding of the flow behavior in axial-centrifugal compressors and provide insights for their design and optimization.
3-D viscous numerical investigation on the overall aerodynamic performance of a transonic axial-flow compressor stage

Abstract:The internal flow field of a transonic axial-flow compressor stage was analyzed by using a fast full 3-D viscous flow calculating method. This practical engineering-oriented method was developed based on a new Lower-Upper implicit scheme and a fourth-order high resolution MUSCL TVD scheme. A wall function method was employed to effectively reduce the computational effort and simple zero-equation turbulence model was adopted to closure the Reynolds-averaged N-S equations. The mixing plane method was employed to transfer parameters between rotor and stator cascades. The overall performance for a compressor stage at different rotating speed was obtained and the internal flow fields at typical operating conditions were emphatically analyzed. Compared with the results obtained from experimental data, these solutions demonstrate both the satisfactory efficiency and accuracy needed by practical applications.

Abstract:Reviewed the historical development of the supersonic axial flow compressor, and gave an outlook for its future developments and research orientations. According to the internal flow characteristics of the conventional supersonic axial flow compressors, put forward a high load of supersonic axial compressor aerodynamic design principle. A preliminary design verification of the principle has been carried. The 3D viscous numerical simulation results show that, under the tip tangential speed 360m / s, has achieved a stage pressure ratio 2.3 with efficiency 86.5%. In addition, considering the rotor under impulse condition can get the maximum rotor total pressure ratio with high efficiency, a design principle has also been put forward to solve the high entrance Mach number problem of the downstream stator. But the numerical simulation results show that the multi-shock structure does not have any advantages to reduce the stator losses.

Abstract:The experimental and numerical aerodynamic analysis was conducted for a highly loaded 5-stage axial compressor at the design speed.Firstly, the validation based on full-scale test data was carried out for overall performance as well as casing static pressure and total pressure profiles at the leading edge of stators.The validation results indicates that the multistage CFD methods applied predict the overall performance and flow details quite well.Further aerodynamic analysis demonstrates that aerodynamic of the design point is in good condition.And the flows firstly break down in the last stator especially below the 70％ span, which is convinced to induce the stall of the machine.

Abstract:The internal flow field of a heavy gas turbine's multi-stage axial-flow compressor was simulated with Fine/Numeca, a 3-D viscous flow commercial software. As a prior study of the project, only five blade rows were calculated, including inlet guide vane and first two stages. Analysis of the relationship between the compressor performance and the changes of the adjustable guide vane's angle and the rotational speed has been done. In order to resolve the Navier-Stokes equations and Spalart-Allmaras one-equation turbulence model, the central difference scheme by Jameson and local time stepping method were employed. This set of method works well to simulate the compressor performance in the overall working conditions and is feasible as well for the subsequent multi-stage computation of the whole compressor.

Abstract:A formula is being proposed for calculating the reaction degree of impellers with which a detail axial thrust calculation has been made for multistage axial flow turbines,thus finding out how the axial thrust varies with the size of its balancing hole,the diameter of the last stage gland and the axial clearance.Results show that the former 2 factors have an obvious influence on the axial balancing thrust while the last one affects little during start-up,dynamic and stable operation period.However the axial clearance still plays an important role on safety operation of the unit.

Abstract:A numerical simulation of a 1.5 stages high pressure axial compressor is presented. The effect of casing suction on compressor aerodynamic performance, stage matching as well as flow loss is discussed in detail. Using modern CFD codes Numeca/FINE, the 3D steady flow inside the 1.5 stages axial compressor has been simulated and visualized, respectively at cruise speed and maximum climbing speed. Numerical solutions show that casing suction partly removes the low-momentum fluid and reduces the flow blockage at tip region, thus improves stage matching mildly between rotor and stator. In general, casing suction, which provides main flow for flight air system, has slight impact on compressor blade row performance and loss characteristics.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel engineering platform for throughflow analysis based on streamline curvature approach is developed for the research of a 5-stage compressor. The method includes several types of improved loss and deviation angle models, which are combined with the authors’ adjustments for the purpose of reflecting the influences of three-dimensional internal flow in high-loaded multistage compressors with higher accuracy. In order to validate the reliability and robustness of the method, a series of test cases, including a subsonic compressor P&W 3S1, a transonic rotor NASA Rotor 1B and especially an advanced high pressure core compressor GE E 3 HPC, are conducted. Then the computation procedure is applied to the research of a 5-stage compressor which is designed for developing an industrial gas turbine. The overall performance and aerodynamic configuration predicted by the procedure, both at design- and part-speed conditions, are analyzed and compared with experimental results, which show a good agreement. Further discussion regarding the universality of the method compared with CFD is made afterwards. The throughflow method is verified as a reliable and convenient tool for aerodynamic design and performance prediction of modern high-loaded compressors. This method is also qualified for use in the further optimization of the 5-stage compressor.

Abstract:For supersonic axial flow compressors,a brief summary was given for its historical development.The internal flow characteristics and problems of the two kinds of traditional supersonic compressors were analyzed.Some prospects were proposed for its future technology trends and research orientation.According to the flow characteristics in supersonic compressors,a new aerodynamic design method of high loaded supersonic axial-compressor with low reaction was put forward.Using this method,active flow control means are not necessary in the efficient rotor,and the exit absolute Mach number of the rotor is decreased.For the downstream stator,boundary layer suction is used to solve its internal flow problems to fulfill an efficient and high loaded stage design.A preliminary design verification of the principle has been conducted.The 3-D viscous numerical simulation results show that at the tip tangential speed of 360 m/s,the stage pressure ratio of 2.3 and the isentropic efficiency of 86.5% are achieved in the use of this concept.

Abstract:The low leakage feature of dry gas seal and high reliability of labyrinth is utilised and the feasibility of the improvements is taken on existing equipment into account at the same time to design a combined labyrinth——dry gas seal on balancing piston.Also,Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) was used to verify this strategy. On the base of this,axial displacement Fault Self-Recovering(FSR) system was introduced to assure the safety and reliability of turbocompressor.

Abstract:In this paper,the internal flow of the multistage axial compressor was calculated based on Reynolds averaged N-S formulation and one formulation tubulence model at off-design points,using mixing plane method and PC network parallel computational technique.The performance of flow near choke points was analysised.Results show that mass flow rate decreases and flow separates at tailing edge of suction surface especially at blade root near the choke points.CFD results are good agree with experimental results,and can be used for design and optimization of compressor.
The Use of the 3D-Viscous Codes in the Analysis of High Speed High Pressure Ratio Centrifugal Impellers

Abstract:The flow inside a centrifugal impeller has various complex three dimensional phenomena (flow separation, jet-wake structure, shock wave, etc.). In this study, the internal flow field calculation of Samsung, high pressure ratio, high speed, centrifugal impeller with splitter blades is obtained by commercially available CFX-Tascflow code with CFX-Turbogrid for grid generation. The results are compared to that obtained previously by Denton and Dawes codes. The impeller is used in the first stage centrifugal compressor of an industrial gas turbine. The CFX-Tascflow results showed some differences Mach number contours. Also, the calculations are performed for Krain’s backswept impeller and the results are compared to the experimental measurements. Simulation of tip clearance has been done and the results were in a good agreement with the previous experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, a pressure ratio 11 centrifugal compressor with an inlet mach number of about 1.6 is preliminary designed. The complex shock boundary layer interation, low energy region in the vicinity of the casing and the outlet flow conditions are analysed. The vaneless and vaned diffusers are also designed. CFD results show that the vaned diffuser can effectively improve the compressor efficiency.
Prediction of Axial Thrust Load Acting on a Cryogenic Liquid Turbine Impeller

Abstract:A single stage cryogenic liquid turbine is developed for replacing the Joule-Thompson valve and recovering energy from the liquefied air during throttling process in the large-scale internal compression air-separation unit, and evaluation of the impeller axial thrust at different conditions is essential for a reliable bearing design and stable operation. To predict the axial thrust load, a numerical model is established to simulate the turbine flow in a turbine stage environment, which includes the main flow domain (an asymmetrical volute, variable geometry nozzle, impeller, and diffuser), impeller front and back side gaps, and shaft seal leakage. Numerical simulation of flow is conducted by using the ANSYS-CFX. Flow characteristics in both main flow domain and impeller side gaps of the turbine stage are captured and analyzed. The axial thrust is then calculated based on the obtained pressure data in the impeller and its front and side gaps by using a direct integration approach.Flow behaviour in both main flow domain and impeller side gaps has been well exhibited by the numerical results. At the impeller back side gap inlet, the back flow is encountered even for design condition and it returns the impeller main flow stream; the impeller side gap flow has much influence on the axial thrust. To investigate influence of turbine operation condition on axial thrust, flow simulation is conducted at different mass flow rates and inlet pressure for the turbine stage, based on which the axial thrust is calculated. It is demonstrated from the obtained numerical results that the axial thrust increases as the inlet pressure increases and decreases as turbine flow rate increases. Geometry parametric study is conducted for the shaft seal clearances, which has demonstrated that the axial thrust is influenced largely by the clearance size and it decreases as the clearance grows.For the purpose of comparison, the empirical method is also used to predict the axial thrust load. The obtained results are compared to the numerical ones and evident deviation of the empirical from the numerical exists and the reason is that axial force components caused by the impeller main flow stream and its side gap flow are approximated very roughly in the empirical method.
Investigation on Centrifugal Impeller in an Axial-Radial Combined Compressor with Inlet Distortion

Abstract:Assembling an axial rotor and a stator at centrifugal compressor upstream to build an axial-radial combined compressor could achieve high pressure ratio and efficiency by appropriate size augment. Then upstream potential flow and wake effect appear at centrifugal impeller inlet. In this paper, the axial-radial compressor is unsteadily simulated by three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with uniform and circumferential distorted total pressure inlet condition to investigate upstream effect on radial rotor. The results show that span-wise nonuniform total pressure distribution is generated and radial and circumferential combined distortion is formed at centrifugal rotor inlet. The upstream stator wake deflects to rotor rotation direction and decreases with blade span increases. Circumferential distortion causes different separated flow formations at different pitch positions. The tip leakage vortex is suppressed in centrifugal blade passages. Under distorted inlet condition, flow direction of centrifugal impeller leading edge upstream varies evidently near hub and shroud but varies slightly at mid-span. In addition, compressor stage inlet distortion produces remarkable effect on blade loading of centrifugal blade both along chordwise and pitchwise.

Abstract:In order to design high pressure ratio and highly loaded axial flow compressor, a new design concept based on Highly-Loaded Low-Reaction and boundary layer suction was proposed in this paper. Then the concept’s characteristics were pointed out by comparing with the MIT’s boundary layer suction compressor. Also the application area of this design concept and its key technic were given out in this paper. Two applications were carried out in order to demonstrate the concept. The first application was to redesign a low speed duplication-stage axial flow compressor into a single stage. The second one was a feasibility analysis to decrease an 11 stage axial compressor’s stage count to 7 while not changing its aerodynamic performance. The analysis result showed that the new design concept is feasible and it can be used on high pressure stage of the aero-engine, compressor of ground gas turbine (except the transonic stage) and high total pressure ratio blower.

Abstract:There is introduced a new low-reaction, highly-loaded axial compressor design concept which is coupled with boundary layer suction method. The characteristic features of the concept are made clear through its comparison with the MIT boundary layer suction compressor. Also are pointed out the potential applications of this concept as well as its key technological problems. Based on this concept, a single-stage, low-reaction and low-speed axial compressor is constructed in association with analysis and computation of boundary layer suction on vanes with the aid of a three-dimensional numerical approach. The results attest to the effectiveness of this way to control separation in blade cascades by the boundary layer suction and the feasibility of this proposed design concept.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental and computational investigations on a centrifugal compressor stage to study unsteady interaction flow and to verify the capability of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. Detailed instantaneous flow has been measured at several different measuring positions using a hot-wire anemometer with the phase-locked ensemble-averaged technique. To describe quantitatively the unsteady effect induced from the impeller, an unsteady intensity is defined in this paper. Also, two computational investigations for the tested centrifugal compressor are performed and compared with corresponding experimental data: one is a steady method with the deterministic stress model and the other is an unsteady method with the sliding interface technique.
