Abstract:The paper aims at studying the evolution process of the syntactic valence of verbs. In the study, three corpuses, i.e. the corpus of ancient classical Chinese,the corpus of ancient vernacular and the corpus of modern vernacular, are constructed. We selected ten main verbs as the objects of the research, and suggested some methods of sample sentence selecting and analyzing. The complements and modifications of the verbs are analyzed in this paper. It reveals that Chinese grammer changes gradually. The ancient classical Chinese and the ancient vernacular are more similar in sentence structures. After the transformation from the ancient vernacular to the modern vernacular, the complexity of Chinese sentences is increased sharply, indicating that Chinese sentence structures have changed greatly after the transformation from ancient vernacular to modern vernacular.

Abstract:With social and technological developments, the contents and means of human communication have undergone tremendous changes, which, in turn, lead to the evolution of word forms and their meanings in human language. In literature, much scholarship has been devoted to the semantic dynamics of words from the perspective of usage frequency, yet this frequency-based method cannot explain clearly the lexical-semantic change due to its failure to cover word senses. In this paper, a large-scale Chinese newspaper text corpus is employed and the distributed representations of some words and their senses are elicited in order to observe the diachronic evolvement of word semantics. The semantic change of the words in the timeline suggests that the distributional method proposed in this paper is effective for the exploration of lexical semantic dynamics. The implication of this study is that the corpus-based distributional method can become a useful tool for studies in other fi elds, such as language evolution, sociolinguistics and language planning.

Abstract:Embodied cognition holds that one's body, actions, perceptions, and situations are integrated into the cognitive process and emphasizes the fact that sensorimotor systems play a role in language comprehension. Previous studies verified the embodied effect in literal language processing but few of them paid attention to metaphors in embodied cognition. The present study aims to explore the embodied effect in the comprehension of Chinese action-verb metaphor. Participants watched a video containing icons and corresponding actions to learn the relationship between them and how to perform these actions in the learning phase and in the test phase, a series of action-describing metaphor phrases were presented to participants with either the icons as primes or no prime at all. The results confirmed the embodied effect as the reaction times (RTs) were significantly shorter when action prime matched the action-verb in the following action-verb metaphor than that of no-prime condition, which are consistent with the facilitation observed in previous relevant studies in embodied cognition. In conclusion, this study verified the embodied effect in the comprehension of Chinese action-verb metaphor, offering further support to embodied cognition and providing a new interpretation for the metaphoric meaning construction of Chinese action-verbs.

Abstract:This paper argues that noun-to-verb transformation is a kind of metonymy and therefore can be interpreted with the event coercion mechanism of Generative Lexicon Theory. A full investigation of ten most common types of noun-to-verb transformation in Mandarin Chinese has proved this approach effective. Unlike previous methods, this approach focuses on the qualia roles that the denominal verbs play in the semantic structure of the source nouns, rather than the semantic roles that the source nouns play in the semantic structure of the denominal verbs. The special perspective can shed much light on this issue. Compared with typical logical metonymy (complement coercion), noun-to-verb transformation has its own characters.

Abstract:One way to resolve the actuation problem of metaphorical language change is to provide a statistical profile of metaphorical constructions and generative rules with antecedent conditions. Based on arguments from the view of language as complex systems and the dynamic view of metaphor, this paper argues that metaphorical language change qualifies as a self-organized criticality state and the linguistic expressions of a metaphor can be profiled as a fractal with spatio-temporal correlations. Synchronously, these metaphorical expressions self-organize into a self-similar, scale-invariant fractal that follows a power-law distribution; temporally, long range inter-dependence constrains the self-organization process by the way of transformation rules that are intrinsic of a language system. This argument is verified in the paper with statistical analyses of twelve randomly selected Chinese verb metaphors in a large-scale diachronic corpus.

Abstract:There are two kinds of lexical metaphor:an extension of the literal meaning of a word and a word created exclusively for figurative use.On the basis of the working definition of a lexical metaphor and its motivation, the paper makes a contrastive analysis of 434 English and Chinese words from 12 semantic fields to reveal that i) the percentage of English lexical metaphor is higher than its Chinese counterpart,ii) there is more metaphorical meanings of an average English word,and 3) English lexical metaphors are less transparent.

Abstract:Translation and metaphor share some fundamental characteristics.Both metaphor and translation have to do with the transformation of signs;in both activities,the meaning results from integration of differed contexts;both of them emphasize the importance of "difference";and both activities have similar cognitive mode and functions.This paper thus argues that translation is metaphor and that further discussions on this nature of translation may provide us with a better understanding of the latter as well as insights into the studies of related issues.

Abstract:Language is a complex adaptive system, but how does it change? For investigating this process, four diachronic Chinese word co-occurrence networks have been built based on texts that were written during the last 2,000 years. By comparing the network indicators that are associated with the hierarchical features in language networks, we learn that the hierarchy of Chinese lexical networks has indeed evolved over time at three different levels. The connections of words at the micro level are continually weakening; the number of words in the meso-level communities has increased significantly; and the network is expanding at the macro level. This means that more and more words tend to be connected to medium-central words and form different communities. Meanwhile, fewer high-central words link these communities into a highly efficient small-world network. Understanding this process may be crucial for understanding the increasing structural complexity of the language system.

Abstract:The theory of embodied semantics holds that verbal metaphors are strongly grounded in sensorimotor experience. Many studies have proven that besides sensorimotor simulation, the comprehension of verbal metaphors also requires semantic abstraction. But the interaction between simulation and abstraction, as well as the time course of metaphorical meaning integration, is not well understood. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether embodiment or abstraction, or both, is employed in the processing of Chinese verbal metaphor. Participants were asked to read subject-verb metaphorical, verb-object metaphorical, literal-concrete and literal-abstract sentences, and the target words were measured at the verb and the object of each sentence. The results revealed that a similar N400 effect was elicited by the target verbs in the verb-object metaphorical and the literal-concrete sentences, and a similar P600/LPC effect was induced by the target verbs in the subject-verb metaphorical and the literal-abstract sentences, reflecting that the verb-object metaphors trigger a simulation process, while the subject-verb metaphors trigger an abstraction process in the verb processing stage. Moreover, the subject-verb metaphors elicited a stronger P600/LPC effect by the target verbs than the verb-object metaphors, but there was no difference of the P600/LPC caused by the target objects between the two kinds of metaphors, revealing that the metaphorical meaning of a subject-verb metaphor is integrated in the verb processing stage, while that of a verb-object metaphor is reanalyzed in the object processing stage. These results suggest that a verbal metaphor is processed both by simulation and abstraction, and the metaphorical meaning is integrated immediately with the unfolding of the sentence meaning. The position where the semantic conflict lies in a sentence (verb vs. object) modulates the time course of metaphor sentence comprehension.

The Typological Change of Motion Expressions in Chinese Revisited

Abstract:This paper reports on a corpus-based study aimed at reexamining the typological status and diachronic change of motion expressions in Chinese, drawing on parallel texts consisting of autonomous motion expressions in Old Chinese (OC) and its Modern Chinese (MoC) translation. The results show that MoC significantly differs from OC both in the preference of lexicalization patterns (Talmyan typology) and semantic components distributed in discourse (Slobinian typology) when narrating similar motion scenes. However, these results fail to support the viewpoint that Chinese has undergone a change from a verb- to a satellite-frame (Li 1993; Talmy 2000; Peyraube 2006; Shi & Wu 2014). It is argued that (i) the Talmyan typology and the Slobinian typology should be treated separately. In Talmyan typology, the diachrony of Chinese demonstrates the change of a V- to a parallel-frame, in that satellite- and verb-framed constructions in MoC have equal frequency and show no bias for the encoding of subtypes of autonomous motion. In Slobinian typology, MoC remains as a Path-salient language, as it gives considerable weight to the expression of Path; (ii) the dominant lexicalization pattern in a language varies from one sub-domain of motion to another (see also Lamarre 2003), and thus the typology of motion expressions is sub-domain-specific; and (iii) motivating forces and blocking forces, furthermore, co-exist diachronically for the typological evolution of motion encoding due to the idiosyncrasy of the morphosyntactic system.

Abstract:This paper discusses the evolution of speech act verbs(SAV) such as zhu(属),fuzhu(付嘱),zhufu(嘱付),fenfu(分付),and jiaodai(交代),derived from physical act verbs in different times in Chinese.It finds that this frequently occurred semantic change is driven by conduit metaphor,reanalysis and invited inference under certain syntactic and pragmatic conditions.The following two issues are discussed:1) Why some semantic changes motivated by metaphoric inference can be observed at the beginning and the final points of the change,but not in the course;2) Why the semantic change occurred on some words but not the others.

Abstract:Leech’s corpus-based comparison of English modal verbs from 1961 to 1992 showed the steep decline of all modal verbs together, which he ascribed to continuing changes towards a more equal and less authority-driven society. This study inspired many diachronic and synchronic studies, mostly on English modal verbs and largely assuming the correlation between the use of modal verbs and power relations. Yet, there are continuing debates on sampling design and the choices of corpora. In addition, this hypothesis has not been attested in any other language with comparable corpus size or examined with longitudinal studies. This study tracks the use of Chinese modal verbs from 1901 to 2009, covering the historical events of the New Culture Movement, the establishment of the PRC, the implementation of simplified characters and the completion and finalization of simplification of the Chinese writing system. We found that the usage of modal verbs did rise and fall during the last century, and for more complex reasons. We also demonstrated that our longitudinal end-to-end approach produces convincing analysis on English modal verbs that reconciles conflicting results in the literature adopting Leech’s point-to-point approach.

Abstract:Abstract The Chinese language has encouraged the paradigm shift in linguistics away from Chomsky-style sentence-internal rules toward usage-based discourse. Analysts have debated two possibilities: is Chinese an allegedly ‘inferior’ and ambiguous language because it rests on the ‘three zeros’: zero subjects, zero anaphora, and zero tense? Or does Chinese use ‘hidden complexity’ ( Bisang 2009 ) to make reference clear by discourse marking? Chinese pressure points on linguistic theory center on these ‘three zeros’. Zero subjects have influenced a broader research category of topic-centered languages. Zero anaphora influenced reference tracking beyond the sentence. Zero tense expanded understanding of time and aspect. The process of the shift comes from international networks of multilingual scholars of Chinese. They have collaborated to form a critical mass of explicitly comparative, empirical research. Chinese interdisciplinary research has been especially influential in typology, child language, cross-cultural communications, translation and artificial intelligence. Fifty years ago, mainstream conferences, textbooks, books, and journals almost never featured Chinese. Now they routinely do.
Exploring Metaphorical Representations of Law and Order in China’s Government Work Reports: A Corpus-based Diachronic Analysis of Legal Metaphors

Abstract:The present study has conducted a diachronic analysis of law and order metaphors in a self-compiled corpus of China's Government Work Reports (CGWR) over a span of 22 years (2000-2021). By mapping target domains with source domains, we categorized four major types of legal metaphors, including building, physical object, journey, and living being, among which physical object was overwhelmingly predominant. Our analysis suggests metaphorical expressions that highlight physicality more than specificity will constantly remain in use because the stability and universality of such metaphors are conducive to the dissemination and reinforcement of legal thoughts. Additionally, there is a direct correlation between legal metaphors and the government's economic, political, and social concerns, as evidenced by increasing attention paid to various security issues and new challenges in China. Given that the rule of law with Chinese characteristics becomes more institutionally recognized and systematically theorized, legal metaphors are implemented in a top-down manner to justify the exercise of power in CGWRs, making Chinese people identified with the governing philosophy and further contributing to the ideological construction of discourse. This study is thus conducive to a general but insightful understanding of how political stances are embodied and reinforced persuasively in discourse.
Diachronic Synonymy and Polysemy: Exploring Dynamic Relation Between Forms and Meanings of Words Based on Word Embeddings

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a large number of publications that use distributed methods to track temporal changes in lexical semantics. However, most current researches only state the simple fact that the meaning of words has changed, lacking more detailed and in-depth analysis. We combine linguistic theory and word embedding model to study Chinese diachronic semantics. Specifically, two methods of word analogy and word similarity are associated with diachronic synonymy and diachronic polysemy respectively, and the aligned diachronic word embeddings are used to detect the changes of relationship between forms and meanings of words. Through experiments and case studies, our method achieves the ideal result. We also find that the evolution of Chinese vocabulary is closely related to social development, and there is a certain correlation between the polysemy and synonymy of the word meaning.

Abstract:Xun Shi Ping Hua(Popular Stories with Admonitions) uses both classic and vernacular language,the contrast of the two language styles reflects the synchronic status of Chinese oral language at the beginning of the 15th century,as well as the diachronic evolution of vernacular vocabulary's replacing of classic vocabulary.This paper takes semantics as unites,selects 12 categories of verbs,doing synchronic and diachronic analysis according to their cases in the contrast of classic and vernacular,then gives complement explanation of the old and new replacement of these verbs in the language of that time.This study provides a reliable evidence for the research of the language of that period in the Ming Dynasty.

Abstract:The present research adopts ERP (Event-Related Potentials) technology to investigate whether there exists a concreteness effect in the processing of Chinese action verbs within metaphorical context. The mean amplitudes of N400 activated by action metaphors were compared with those activated by literal verbs and abstract verbs. The findings indicated that the Met verbs evoked a significantly larger N400 response at frontal brain region compared to the Abs verbs at a time window 200–500 ms, while the Met verbs elicited a notably greater N400 amplitude specifically at the posterior brain region in comparison to the Lit verbs at 300–500 ms time window. These results may be interpreted as indicating that the comprehension of the Met verbs is based on the concrete action semantics.

Abstract:This paper is a case study on the Chinese verb qu,elaborating how its semantic change from "leave"to"go to"occurred in East Han dynasty and established in the Wei and Jin period. Although the change of a single verb might seem a trivial detail,it helps us see that the semantic change of words is a conditional and systematic evolution,which cannot be accomplished instantly, and whose mechanism and motivation can only be understood in its diachronic development and the big picture of language system.This paper concludes two motivations about meaning change, infection and analogy.
